Evening Yoga Routine: Sooth & Relax (intermediate level)

This Yogea sequence is intended to calm the mind, massage the ligaments and sooth the nervous system into a healthy sleep. Targeted reclining breathing techniques open the front and back of the body, and help it stretch while relaxing. A comfortable massage of the lower back relieves pressure from the lumbar spine caused by sitting all day. Subtle backbends alternate with core work and hamstring, hip and shoulder stretches to promote an overall stimulation of the joins, girdles and organs. A simple, but invigorating warm-up abounds with meridian crossings and soothing hip-openers to alleviate tension build up and energy clogging. Standing, sitting and reclining twists purify the organs, flushing away toxins and de-compressing the lumbar spine. Bound standing postures promote balance and inner peace by stimulating the right and left brain hemispheres. Quad openers pair with hamstring stretches and seated twists to nurture ligaments and tendons while catalyzing the detoxification and glandular stimulation process. The accent is on forward bends that elicit the parasympathetic nervous system response, and usher the mind and body into deep serenity states. The meditative pace and forward-bending focus of this sequence stimulates the background body and helps tap the subconscious reservoir of latent potency. The practice is contemplative and asks us to reflect on the lessons of each day with a sense of equanimity and appreciation. Poses are deliberately held longer to promote a deep physical, psychological and physiological effect, restoring the natural equilibrium of body and mind, soul and spirit.

Thanks for the elaborating how you made this routine work for you. It is very helpful when our viewers have the patience to study some of the poses before attempting them. This is the safe way to go and it helps you tailor the practice according to your specific needs. Regarding your question, ankle to knee is a very tricky pose, as it requires deep flexibility in the hip flexors, gluteus medius, minimus and maximus and in some instances the hamstrings.

I find your videos very interesting and very innovative but geared towards someone who's super flexible and a lot younger than me (53). Although this one flowed slowly, it was nevertheless very difficult - my experience of self-taught yoga (virtually every day for the past year and a half) is completely 'you-tube' based. I'd love something challenging for a middle aged semi-beginner ! I will, however, keep on trying your videos! Thank you for posting them.

This is probably my favorite routine. I find the fast-paced, dynamic poses to be really energizing, but not necessarily my preferred evening routine because I feel so awake afterwards. Thanks for making great videos!

Hello- Thank you for sharing this practice. It is not easy to put oneself out there, especially for the benefit of others. I enjoyed your practice but I would also like to suggest that you might like to add additional cuing as this practice is complex and challenging. You have a lovely voice and gentle presence, much gratitude for sharing that peacefulness as well. Namaste

Dear Kami, Thanks for taking the time to voice your experience of the practice. This is still one of the most controversial videos that we have ever posted. Keep up your beautiful practice! Namaste!

Dear Elena, True, this is a good flow, but it was one of our first sequence and we were still fingering out how to cue the poses to the breath, and were shooting it in two directions, which at some point confuses the viewers because they back the screen. We have improved the instructional quality of our recent videos, so if you liked the flow you can enjoy one of our current routines instead. Thank you so much for your comment, it really makes sense and we are working on improving the narration so it is user friendly and easy to follow. Namaste!

I think some of the directions could have been a little clearer, but other than that, I loved this! I enjoyed all of the different variations of things and moves that I haven't seen elsewhere. This was great because the practice didn't bore me to sleep, it relaxed me and now i'm ready for bed. I didn't feel like the practice caused me to overstrain, but at the same time, it worked what needed to be worked in order for me to feel completely relaxed and ready to sleep. Thank you! I will definitely be using more of your videos!!

commonNcrime Thanks so much once again for taking the time to elaborate on your experience. It is so valuable to us, especially with this controversial video that people love or hate. True, it was one of our first attempts in filming our style and we got a little muddled up in the directions and instructional pace, but it has taught us a lot about how to create more user-friendly videos. Like you mentioned if you like some of the variations that are quite "new " and "fresh" you can extract them from the routine and practice them on your own. For better instructed and still ingeniously woven sequences visit our more recent posts. Thank you for the light your radiate through your words and practice. Namaste!

Thank you so much for your feedback. Yes, we would be more than happy to create a routine especially for a middle-aged advanced beginner, which would be slower in pace and more elaborate in the explanations and possible modifications of the poses. If you want to try some of our recent videos, however, you will find ones that are slower-paced and designed for different beginner levels. Keep on practicing and we will keep you posted when we design the sequence upon your request.

My reply comes in few consecutive posts because of the 500 characters limit. 1. I highly recommend for you to warm up with some standing hip opening poses first, like Warrior 2, Triangle, Right Angle, low lunge and half moon pose. Prior to that you can do a couple of rounds of Sun Salutes to warm up the whole body.

Hi, Thanks for your comment. The poses in this sequence are mostly forward bends which sooth the nervous system and relax the body before going to bed. I think the confusion comes from the video facing four directions, which makes it difficult to follow. We have changed our filming format recently and our new videos face only two directions. Please, try our other soothing sequence "Release and unwind". You may find it easier to follow and relish its soother effect better. Thanks again!

This would have been a wonderful practice if done in slow YIN style. Visuals weren’t great because it was too dark, voice cues weren’t always spot on and mind reading isn’t always available to me. This is a great practice for late morning or midday, definitely won’t relax you at the pace it was done. I used to live in the City, so I totally understand how very fast city pace is reflected in this practice. On the bright side the sequence flow was simply amazing, one of the best ones I’ve tried! And openers were absolutely great. Just really wish it wasn’t soooo rushed. I’ll do it again, when wide awake and energized. Now I need to breathe very deeply for a while and drink Chamomile tea to hopefully fall asleep...

Dear Katherine, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide such a valuable and constructive comment. I m well aware that this is not really the best shot or instructed practice. It was shot as one of our first sequences on the channel and has a lot of shortcomings, but the flow is nicely connected and some poses are really healing and deeply releasing. Ever since I have committed to creating routines that are better instructed and easier to follow. If you try our recent posts, I hope you won't have this issue and you can still enjoy the creativity of the practice and the freshness on the style. So happy to practice with you. Namaste!

I agree with most of the comments here. I Really like the kind of flow you have in this yoga sequence, but all the angles are very confusing. And like some other yogi here describe, i also had to stop a few times to figure out what whent where and keep track of all the moves. I think an evening practice need to be slower and not so many moves. (I accually am pretty use to doing yoga, but this was hard! )

Special thanks for your constructive feedback. Yes, this type of practice is quite innovative and certain poses, binds and variations are a bit challenging and require regular practice. Consider the option of pausing and running the pose through your body and then as you master it, you can go with the flow. But we have noted your request for special cuing and will make sure to elaborate more when poses, transitions and the whole flow get more challenging.

I love your sequences, really I think all your sequences are amazing, I do my best to follow always although there are some postures I can't do but it's a matter of time and practice, and seriously I think the pace of this flow is not that fast, I've seen faster that this one... I think you are doing a great job, btw whenever I'm in adomuka and try to raise my leg I feel as if I could raise it a bit more but I know I have to square my hip so when I do so and cannot raise my leg and it leaves me with a feeling of I could but I can't ( I don't know if you can understand me) any suggestions for that?
@YogeaArtFlowYoga
@YogeaArtFlowYoga 10 лет назад
Dear Liliana, Thanks for your comprehensive comments. The reason why the sequences are sometimes hard to follow is because in these first videos we shot, we rotated the directions front and back, the way the routine would be demonstrated in a class format, but realized that it makes the whole practice so much harder to follow on video. So we have reformatted this, and now the flow is only in one direction and much easer to follow. As for the poses, sometimes you could get confused as the style is innovative and the asanas are not widely practiced and known, so we suggest just watching the whole flow once and then doing it together with the narration. This would give you a sense of the underlying logic and soon you will get a feel for the new poses and how they present variations of older poses. Keep up the great practice. If you are in down dog you don't have to struggle raising your leg too high, it is enough to keep your hips squared so your alignment is intact and gradually, with regular practice the leg will lift higher, as you keep the rootedness through the opposite heel. Make sure you get the alignment first and then the flexibility range will expand naturally as you continue to practice regularly. Good luck!

That was the hardest thing i've ever done. 1. my physical limitations. 2. not enough instructions, i was dong something then looked over and it looked totally different. 3. For me, it was too fast, by the time i was ALMOST into a position, she was changing it.4. also, dark pants on dark sky wasn't helpful. I'd have to say it's advanced as one needs to know more and be experienced even more than an intermediate to over come the production issues. Seemed like it could be a good one tho!

+Katie Wickliff You have an eye for picking up simultaneous movement, dear Katie. Yes, there was movement at the window during the flow. It is amazing how you spotted it. Thanks for the comment. It really helps to get the routines better and more user-friendly. The instruction is synced with the movement and that is what makes it easy to follow, but there are different ways for every person. And if this routine is a little too fast for you, please, try our latest detox routines posted. Thanks!

I appreciate the artfulness of this sequence but like other commentators would like cueing that allows me to follow without looking, especially as the later poses are difficult to see in the dark. The biggest missing piece for me is cueing around the breath. What is yoga if not breath awareness? It then becomes more like gymnastics.

2. Once you have completed your externally rotated hip opening poses on either side you can sit on the floor try a butterfly pose with your spine erect, and then while you keep one sit bone rooted hug one of your legs with your knee bend, cradle it as you keep your spine straight and place the ankle on top of the knee. At first your knee will most likely be lifting of the ankle. Don't worry about it, just keep on twisting your spine and attempting some forward bending and side bending.

This was too confusing to do before bedtime. When is the soothing and relaxing supposed to happen?

pff I hate being a beginner:P I am having huuuuge difficulties keeping up. And almost every pose is new to me but I'm looking for a bedtime preparation flow and this seems to be good but I just can't do it yet. Gave up after 10 minutes:( and I was not planning to give up but I just can't do it.

I'm well out of practice :( Can't keep up with the movements and I feel like it's too fast to be relaxing just before bed.

Hi Matt, I agree with you. This was one of our trail sequences, and it does flow too fast for a bed-time routine. If you like this type of flow, feel free to check our recent posts, which are much slower paced and user friendly. Namaste!

3. You can then attempt a pigeon pose for a moment and then go back to ankle to knee again. With each practice it will get better. We have some hip opening practices, too, check them out.

I know, this is one of the poorly shot and cued sequence and it is hard to follow indeed, thanks for noticing and commenting. Check out some of our more recent videos, which are better demonstrated, shot and instructed and flow only in one direction. Namaste!

This is obviously a sequence for a very advanced yoga practice. I found it impossible to follow, and way too fast. Not to mention, the poses were quite impossible. Perhaps it's something to aspire to?

This seems like a wonderful routine for awakening the body, but definitely not soothing or relaxing.

Ardaskela88 Thank you for commenting. It means a lot to us in order to improve the quality of the routines. Yes, we have gotten this constructive feedback from many viewers and ever since have changed the pace and the direction of shooting (only one way) so that it will be easier to follow. However, this specific video was shot at the very beginning when we were exploring the different range and opportunity of flow and speed. We will be posting more evening sequences at a much slower pace and with better instructions so you can follow better. Thank you for helping us grow!

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to comment. Yes, this particular sequence is a little confusing as the directions change and you end up with your back to the screen, but we have fixed this in our recent routines and hopefully the pace and directions will leave your more satisfied and give you the time to figure the flow out. Thanks again for commenting!

Maybe this will be easier to follow after going through it a few times, but I had to keep on rewinding because I missed poses entirely that were not verbally cued at all. I'm an experienced yogi (10+ years) and found this flow to be very fast to the point of not getting any benefit out of the poses. Sure, it got me sweating, but I'm not at all relaxed and am tighter than when I started. There is no breath in this flow. Slow down. You have some good ideas, but they're all jumbled together.

Dear Noreen, Thank you so much for commenting. I keep on repeating myself over and over again.All the comments on the pace and direction are absolutely true, and I have taken them wholeheartedly and have tried to improve the instructional quality of all recent videos. Hopefully, if you ever take a stab at a more recent video, you will still enjoy the diversity of the flow and not get lost. Thanks again for taking the time to write to us. We are so thrilled and humbled by all comments!

Although I loved the poses, I didn't find this relaxing at all. The transitions are practically nonexistent and far too fast for an evening practice.

TheRentFan Thanks so much. Your sincere feedback is very much appreciated. This routine is probably the hardest to follow as it flows in two directions and some of the poses are fairly new so by the time you figure it out, the flow is disturbed. It was just one of our first videos that we shot, and we were trying to figure out the directions and the sense of pacing and flow. But thanks to other comments like yours we have improved the quality of the videos and if you try our recent posts they flow much better and are much clearly instructed. So if you ever feel like them, give them a shot! Thank you for helping us grow. Namaste!

Hi Geoffrey, Thanks for your tip. We are considering on slowing the pace down, just like you suggested, as most people cannot follow. Check our recent posts, which are at a lower speed, if this style appeals to you, of course. Thank you for commenting, your tips are valuable to us and help us grow. Keep up the great practice!

+Lora Lukianenko Dear Lora, Sorry to disappoint you with this routine. It is one of the first videos we actually shot and because it faces in two directions it is hard to follow and the fast pace doesn't help either. The dark video was actually intentionally sought because it is an evening routine, but as you mentioned it gets a bit too dark to follow. Thanks for mentioning all this because we have been working to improve it ever since and if you try our most recent posts we will enjoy them much more. The quality of the asana is great and the instructional quality is much more user friendly. Thanks so much for making the time to write to us. It means so much. Keep on practicing with our new posts. Namaste!

I liked the poses but way too fast! The descriptions aren't very clear either and it seems like you start to move before describing what you're about to do. I was definitely expecting something a little bit slower for an evening routine... I honestly feel energized after watching it... good thing, but not what I was looking for

Hi Grace, Thanks for your feedback. We are currently improving the pacing between instructions and demonstration, so all of you could follow easily. This was one of our first videos and we were still testing the ground in terms of image, instruction and pace. Our new sequences have much better instructions and are at a much slower pace. And we will be doing other sequences like this that will be user friendly. Thanks and keep up your practice.

+Sarah Paul Dear Sarah, This video is really fast and hard to follow. Please pick a more recent one instead and you will be able to flow with it seamlessly. This one was an experiment that we did early on, trying to figure out the best way to record the practice. We have gotten much better right now and if you choose a more recent post you will be able to follow effortlessly. Good luck with your Yoga practice!

skullznthings Thanks for sharing! You picked a sequence that does get a little confusing, especially because it flows in two directions and the light is a little sparse towards the end. This is one of the first videos we shot, and we had trouble cuing the moves adequately, but if you like some poses you could just extract them from the video and do them separately. For a slower paced and more clear sequence try some of our recent posts. Thanks for commenting. Every comment is valuable to us! Namaste

I've done yoga for years, and I think 50% of the pose names in this video are made up. Loved the setting of this video, but with a combination of incomplete cues & quick transitions, it was almost impossible to keep up (very jarring experience).
@YogeaArtFlowYoga
@YogeaArtFlowYoga 10 лет назад
Thank you for your remark. You figured correctly, yes the point of this style is to innovate the established yoga cannon that squares you into routines that are the same. So a lot of the poses are new, or innovative variations of classical poses, and they have more contemporary names. Saying "jatara parivartanasana", or "upavista konasana", or "viparita karani" doesn't make the sequence more or less competent. In fact if you read the blogs that accompany each video you will see a very extensively researched and contemporized material that is not the whim of newbies but of experts with over 20 years experience in the field. It is just a signature style that promotes innovation, and does invent new and reinvents old poses. Just another artful approach to Yoga, which a lot of people enjoy. This routine was one of the first we shot, so we were still trying to figure out the instructions and directions flow, but if you go to the more recent routines you will find them more user friendly and easier to follow. It seems from your comments that this is not your cup of tea, and we wish you luck with sticking to the authenticity of classical yoga and reaping the same benefits for your self. Thank you again, and cheers! Yogea Artflow Team

Your instructions should be such that a blind person could follow them, and they are not. Work on that. The sequence is good, otherwise.

Thanks for your comment. This was one of our first routines we shot, and they were intentionally fast, as we were catering to a Vinyasa-driven audience. But we have improved the quality of the pace and instructions and if you check out some recently posted videos you could find them more user friendly. We will also keep your comment in mind when we shoot the next videos. Thanks again!

Thank you ladies for commenting. As mentioned above we are currently working on improving the quality of the pacing and instructions so that you don't have to look at the screen all the time. But sometimes the poses and transitions are new and unorthodox, so it makes sense to pause and then replay, once you really get it. But we will try to get this going with our upcoming videos. Thank you for practicing. Namaste!
