Lower back pain relief Yoga Routine: Spinal Tonic (intermediate level)

This sequence targets lower back pain, and is conducted in an injury-prevention healing mode. Gentle backbends and soothing forward bends, coupled with decompressing twists and subtle inversions provide a varied spectrum of spinal extensions and contractions that lengthen the lumbar spine area and open the thorax and cervical spine. The sequence works on all planes: coronal, medial, frontal and transverse and provides structural integration by realigning the spinal column with the crown of the head and the tailbone. A strong core focus helps build up the oblique and transverse abdominals, while alleviating potential disk discomfort, and in turn increases the space between the vertebrae, lubricating the natural cushioning of the spine. The change of levels, planes, angles and directions affords a very innovative experience, where you can explore back relievers through varied positions and transitions. This Yoga-Pilates blend is accessible to all and will give you creative ideas to compose your own daily spinal health regimen. At the end of this practice you will feel suppler, taller and aligned with the Earthly vortex and the cosmic flow.

Thank you so much dear Antonia. This beautiful organic and flowing session was just what I needed for my lower back. I've been experiencing a little pain in my lower back and I try to stretch it in different ways by breathing into it but after doing this routine I have felt really deep stretches and relief this morning. I feel very blessed to be able to access your offering this way. Thank you for what you offer so generously. Thank you to the Yogea team as well for filming so well. Love

I threw out my back 5 days ago and am just starting to ease back into working out (because I have missed it soooo much!). I figured I would keep things gentle with yoga practice for the next week or so, this was great and left me feeling refreshed and also helped the tightness in my lower back. Thank you!

Dear Maria, We are improving the directions and narration, drawing on yours and other people's comments. This video is one of our first attempts, so it flows in two directions, and considering the novelty of poses could get a little confusing and fast, But our recent posts are much slower and doable. Thank you for your comment! Keep up the great practice!

Thanks for your remark.This routine flows a little faster than usual, and therefore the instructions are minimized to suit the pace. Some of the poses are also unorthodox, and it makes sense to pause and try some of them independently. But since you are a seasoned yoga practitioner feel free to pick out the poses that you like from this video and integrate them into your personal practice. You can also check our "Decompress: Eliminate Excess" sequence which is slower paced and narrated live.

+Amanda Grapes Dear Amanda, We hear you, Yes, this particular routine was one of the first we shot, and we were trying to figure out how to present it, retaining the circular flow of the style. It has very good poses and modifications, but it is hard to follow and a little too fast, so if you want a back relief sequence you can check out Decompress Eliminate Excess or PainFree. We are not shooting only from one side and working on improving the visual recording and instructional value of the routines, so hopefully you can enjoy our recent posts much more. Thanks for sharing your opinion. It really helps us get better and grow!

+Gama Harjono Dear Gama, Thanks for your positive feedback. This video has its flaws because of the high speed and the different directions that it moves into, but the poses are very helpful and well-strung to give you a sense of "Vinyasa". If you are looking for other back relieving routines you can check out "Decompress-eliminate excess" and "PainFree". Thank you for brining a smile to the Yogea channel today. Only together and united can we make the world happy and free! Cheers back to you!

atypical and interesting flow that hits lots of "yawn" places that are often missed. As a pretty tight (ie hamstrings hips, etc) guy, that's quite helpful. Thanksmuch

+mrshake What a great way to describe a sequence "the yawn" places, that are often missed. So figurative and beautiful, thank you for your inspiration and atypical comment. As for relieving lower back tightness you can try our two other routines "Decompress, eliminate excess" and "Pain free" or for tight hamstrings and hips your can give "Limber base" a shot. Happy stretching... both mentally and physically!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, dear Ric. This is a controversial sequence that flows a bit too fast, but yes, it is replete with new variations and artful transitions that juice up the practice, while soothing and strengthening the back. Thank you humbly and much love to you, too, dear Yogi!

Heidi So Thanks for your very valuable comments, dear Heidi. Yes, you are quite right - this is not a beginner's video and you have to have had some movement culture in order to figure out the transitions and modifications of this flow. It also flows in two directions which makes it a little harder to follow for some. But we have taken our user's feedback very seriously and are working on improving the pacing and instructions so everyone could enjoy the sequences like you did. We have other back relieving sequences if you are looking for that, so check them out, and good luck with your practice! Namaste to your spirit, too!

Dear Lorna, Thank you so much for your constructive feedback which helps us improve this channel. This routine has many new back relieving poses, and because it is performed in a flow manner it could be hard to follow. But you can pause if you like some poses and adapt them to your own back relieving practice. Our latest videos are much slower and better cued, and in this respect you can try our latest back pain routine "Decompress - Eliminate Excess! Many Thanks!
@YogeaArtFlowYoga
@YogeaArtFlowYoga 10 лет назад
Thanks so much for your constructive feedback, which really helps us grow and make more user friendly routines. The reason for the higher pace when treating back pain is that when you hold the poses longer, the lower back get more tender, and it is better if you alternate twists, forward bends and backbends at a flow pace to get a complete stretch in all directions. If this is not your type of practice you can try the slower routines. However, we are working on improving the cuing and the speed

***** Dear Laurie, Thanks for sharing. This spinal health video is nice indeed, but do bear in mind that it flows a bit too fast and it moves in two directions which can be a little confusing to follow. Based on our viewer's requests and feedback we have done two other lower back relieving videos that you and your husband can benefit from. Check out: "Decompress- eliminate excess" and "Pain Free". And of course feel free to take any poses and sequencing from this video and hold it longer. This is filmed on the roof of an East River building in New York, nearby the UN. It is quite a view! Enjoy and Namaste!

Great dear Valentine, Try the other routines I suggested earlier. Alternating different back soothing routines will help you not only massage the muscles around the core, but also strengthen the abdominals to relieve pressure from the lower back. Strengthening and toning as just as important as stretching and elongating especially when it come to back pain relief. Happy practice and again Happy Holidays!

It's very hard to find a good yoga practice for people with back/knee pains. This one is very nice! Thank you. I will definitely try it again :) However, at times the sequence is too creative for me and I get lost and skip certain poses. It would be ideal if there were maybe fewer poses or alternatively more time to do them :) :) Once again thank you for your routine :)

Joanna Gonsior Dear Joanna, Thanks so much for your spot-on comment. This sequence is one of the first that we shot, and because it flows in two directions sometimes it gets confusing to follow. Our recently posted sequences face one direction and flow at a better and more user-friendly pace. But it is very interesting what you said about the creativity of the practice that prevents you from following. We will take your feedback at heart and make sure to create smoother and simpler and slower transitions that are clear, enjoyable and beneficial. Feedback like yours really helps us grow and improve the overall quality of the practice. Thank you so much!

Woah. It surely is a great video if you get what to do - but by the time I figured out what to do, the video is already two steps further. If it was slower (much! slower!) I'm sure it would have been fun. But like that, I'm getting the frustrated feeling of not doing anything the way I'm supposed to. I know its intermediate and all, but if you could explain what to do more slowly and in greater detail next time? That would be awesome! Thanks for the video anyway, I'm sure it's great if you know the poses!

lailuvia Thank you so much for your very helpful comment. This sequence is one of the first we shot and it flows in too directions in a very fast pace, so it is hard to follow while holding the poses. Ever since we have corrected our videos greatly and opted for a much slower pace and better instruction. We will be posting more user-friendly back relief videos soon, and will keep you posted. But if you like some of the poses from this video and they sooth your back feel free to integrate them into your home practice. Otherwise, follow some of our recent posts that are very accessible and provide sufficient time to enjoy each pose. Thanks so much for commenting, it is so valuable to us!

I am a 55 year old woman who trained at The Rambert School of Ballet many years ago. I was given an anabolic steroid injection into my left hamstring at another ballet school, which turned out to be a mis-diagnosis, it was a small fracture in the ischium causing the problems. Doing your wonderfully creative sequences has reawakened my joy of movement and although I am unable to do many of the moves I think it is in the trying that one makes progress. I am beginning to feel release in my muscles. Thank you. x

sarah dellar Dear Sarah,Thank you for your sincere and moving feedback. As a life long dancer myself I have had to battle with similar irreparable for the allopathic doctors conditions, but it was the creativity of the yoga flow and the commitment to the practice that has slowly fully healed me. And yes, you are absolutely right, it is the trying that matters and then one day you see you've all of a sudden make a quantum leap without you even noticing. I too struggle with some moves and poses, more intricate transitions some times, but have realized that when the practice changes and offers creative options for growth then the mind becomes lucid and the body more supple and conducive to energetic ease. And slowly you being to feel release in the muscles, through the joint, though the mental conditioning, and you grow tremendously. Thank you for growing with us, together we can take a leap of faith an discover our limitless potential for expansion and growth. Namaste!

I understand a higher pace routine if the focus is fat loss or maximizing caloric burn but for healing and restorative practice I believe a slower pace would have been more effective. I think it would be fantastic if you did this routine again at a slower pace and took the time to instruct. Since the moves are unorthodox I think it is especially important. The routine is very unique and promising

Dear Valentine, Thank you for your comment. It seems you picked one of the fastest flows and I totally agree with you the poses are great, but if you haven't done it multiple times this particular flow is hard to follow. When you reach out you should be activating your quads, your core (the oblique abdominals) and your gluetueus muscles all at the same time. I will do a video tutorial explaining that pretty soon and will keep you posted. But if you are looking for a backsoothing routine, try out: Strong Stem, Spinal Balm or Decompress: Eliminate excess. Happy Holidays & Namaste!

I've practiced yoga for over 20 years. I practice almost every day. I found this flow to be very hard to follow.

Dear Samantha, Thank you for commenting. I agree with you. Because this routine flows in two directions and is very fast paced, it is really hard to keep up. However some of the poses are amazing for the back, so you can take them and incorporate them into your home practice. Thanks to comments like yours we have worked on fixing the pace, shooting and cuing, so hopefully when you pick one of our recent posts you won't encounter this problem any more. Thank you for making the time to write to us. It is so important to keep the dialogue alive! Namaste!

Really wanted to try but never did yoga before and couldn't find one for beginners. Afraid of making my back worse.

There is not enough description or time for any of these poses. Normally they explain better how your body should be and movements to correct. I can tell I am doing them wrong but don't get enough description on how to do it right.

I find the pace to be too fast (and confusing) to actually have an effect on my lower back pain, I had to stop half-way. It's more like a power yoga class. Far too many poses crammed in such a short time and felt the cueing could be improved too. I think it would have been better if we are to pause and hold for five breaths in each pose. I would certainly come back to this video in the future as I find the asanas interesting and worth a try, not now when I'm trying to manage my lower back pain.

This is a rather fast paced practice for a bad back. The poses are soothing, but they transition too fast and sometimes it is more taxing that releasing. I suggest that you try our most recent back soothers - they are definitely more user friendly and comforting. I hope your back heals fast. Light and healing to you!

Dear Neelam, This is a supersonic speed sequence and it is fast indeed, It was requested by a viewer who wanted to challenge herself at this pace, but you can try some of our most recent posts, which are much slower and better instructed. If you are looking for a back-soother Spinal Balm should do the job. Thanks you for you comments and all the best!
