EAH truly deserves a REVIVAL, not a reboot. Not even the studio knew that Mattel was going to cancel the series they just found out when Mattel told them, meaning we actually do have some unreleased EAH stuff that has been shelved somewhere. I never disliked her, she is a complex character. For me, EAH was way better written than Monster High, and the timeline was way better organized(probably because they learned from MH, which did have a very confusing timeline and lore).

The thing with Apple is that she was raised believing that straying from the story would result in everyone in their story ceasing to exist. To her, when Raven rebelled, she was not only sentencing herself to death, she was also killing Apple, Hunter, all of their parents, the entire Seven Dwarves Clan, and without Hunter, the Red Riding Hood story also won't happen, so Cerise, Ramona, their parents and grandparents, all the Hoods and Wolves would die. If that included Robin Hood and Sparrow Hood, since Cerise said in one of the books that they were related, that's a third story that could die out. So, to Apple, it looks like Raven doesn't care about the collateral damage that Raven could be causing, which is why she calls Raven selfish in Thronecoming.

@@maruareys9329 Ravens choice did kill people tho, it’s mentioned in the video that fairy’s are dying or in EAH terms “disappearing”. This is happening because the entire point of fairies is to serve characters like Ashlynn and Cedar who both have roles where fairies are a major part of their destiny’s, and now both have refused to play that role leaving the fairies with no real purpose in the lands of ever after high making them disappear.

So I about six minutes in to the video and I don’t know if this is going to be reference but I will say I appreciate Apple a lot more in the book Series then the show tbh, we get a part of her backstory where when she was 6 she had fallen down a cold well and it scared her so much about the uncertainty of the world she pledged right there to always follow her destiny. Apple's core trauma is uncertainty and lack of security from that uncertainty. Which explains everything that she does and why she is a Royal. If all your life you have been told to do X or bad things will happen to you, and then be put in a situation(s) where that "truth" is proven real, then of course Apple would choose between the lesser evil compared to bigger evil, unable to get to the root cause of the problem and make permanent change. Apple, while self-centered and a bit dense to other people's problems despite the efforts to understand them and help them, is a good person. She is a victim of an unfair and bias system just like Raven and everyone else. My personal gripe with her character has been her "higher than thou" attitude and trying to force her destiny to manifest, but I still appreciate her. She learn her lesson. I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't play around with her character inspirations from Red Rose and Snow White as she is partly inspired by Snow White from that story (because of her looks), instead of just sticking into her being blonde Snow White from the Snow White and seven Dwarfs story.

I actually never hated her, but I certainly didn't like her very much until later in thr series. I loved her design so I always wanted to like her. I also understood her reasoning for feeling like she needed to follow her destiny. She has a good destiny, Raven and the other villains do not and I always thought it was unfair of her to ask that of them, but also unfair for the villains to essentially possibly cause the entire fairytale world to collapse because of their dislike of wanting to be forced into a role played out by their parents that really doesn't have anything to do with them. I was also older when the series first came out (12) and had younger sisters who watched the show with me. I identified a lot with Raven and liked her design more than Apple's so I personally sided with her more. But I didn't dislike Apple. I miss EAH and I'm hoping we might see an actually decent reboot of the series or a continuation in the future.

@Yams-Hams7734
@Yams-Hams7734 Год назад
@@msk-qp6fnI mean you can technically argue that many of the rebels were narrow minded and self righteous too. They never really attempted to listen to the other side of the argument, and they never considered the effects of their actions on the fairy tale world. They all just simultaneously agreed that making people follow their destinies is wrong, and nobody should sign the book. Also they’re just, if not more selfish. I mean look at Raven she was told what could be a possibility, (potentially harming the inhabitants of the fairy tale world, along with herself and her story.)and yet she still went ahead and refused to sign the book. I understand her position and her motivations, however she endangered everyone. I mean sure her destiny is safe, but her actions don’t just affect her, she’s affecting many others too with that decision. Also she seemed to have no regard for her own life, considering Grimm warned her that her legacy along with her own life would cease to exist should she not sign. So what was even the point of rebelling? All things considered she made a very rash and unreasonable decision. I know it was one of those split second decisions. But considering all this information it’s really quite easy to see why the Royals are so keen of keeping the rebels in line. Ultimately sustaining then status quo is much more important than personal liberties when you consider all the other things you may be risking by rebelling. Raven’s story is pretty major in the fairy tale world, so I think it’s safe to assume that her rebelling would cause some consequences for some people. In fact, that’s one of my biggest gripes with the series, they consistently harp on the message that the Royals are wrong because they want to take away liberties, with little things like being told mostly from the Rebels point of view, not really seeing other Royal’s reasons for following their destiny. As well as shelving the book entirely by the end of Way Too Wonderland. With emphasis on the students now being able to choose. They also focus primarily on Apple’s development, without really ever having Raven acknowledge or see the effects of her actions (they don’t really show it throughout the series but I’m almost positive the spoke about the impact of not signing in some of the books and the TV show, they just never showed it, which is unfortunate considering it really could’ve been a key character moment for Raven, with her actually seeing the effects for herself and making her truly think about her decisions. She may not have changed her mind, but it would make her a much more well rounded character, as opposed to someone who just harps on changing your destiny because your free to do what you want, and they’re no consequences whatsoever.) Now it’s worth noting that Raven did try to reconcile her mistake by signing later on, however like I said before I feel like a more important thing to add is that she never sees the negative effects of her actions/mentality. While Apple consistently sees the harmful effects of the Royal mentality. It students to be fearful and make rash decisions, Royals and Rebels alike, Raven, Briar and Ashlynn. And she saw that it could be used for nefarious purposes as well, despite her and Grimm being highly supportive of signing the storybook and following your destiny through, it was almost used twice to steal someone’s destiny. Although now that I think about it this may be a good continuation of the fairy tales without the consequences of your story proofing and harming people and the world around you. But I’m sure you can get the point. Sorry if that was a little long. I just wish that they offered a more nuanced take on both Apple and Raven’s perspectives. That includes the fans, who are so quick to judge Apple and view Raven as this hero who did nothing wrong. Also, just wanted to let you know, that I do respect your opinion as well. Your opinion on Apple is perfectly understandable and valid, I just wanted to raise a few points about Raven’s character and some of the gripes I had about her character arc.
@Yams-Hams7734
@Yams-Hams7734 4 месяца назад
Precisely what I’ve been saying, I’ve always thought the same about Ever After High, I think at first they were trying to offer a more nuanced perspective but after the show continued it started getting less nuanced and more black and white, the fandom itself though has always had a black and white stance on both sides, and you’ve touched on a major gripe that I have with the series as well, the villainizing of Apple’s character and the viewpoint of Raven as the saint who could no wrong, when that couldn’t be further from the truth. The fandom also proceeds to bash the royals even though a lot of their arguments actually are reasonable, I mean they were told that if they rebelled people would disappear, and not just them they’re whole families, and anyone else related to their story, it’s not as cute and dry as a lot of the fandom makes it, and if you view it from this lens Apples actions and motivations throughout the story makes a lot more sense, if life as they know it will disappear because people start rebelling, than Apple is actually the hero of the story, and the rebels are the villains. I do sympathize with the rebels positions of course, but they clearly didn’t think through their actions, and as a result many other people will die or suffer because of that.

Like this video itself is a testament to how much depth EAH had. You can make an entire video analyzing and explaining Apple White's character and do the same for numerous other main characters like Briar and Raven as well as side character like Dexter or Lizzie. But I don't think you'd be able to do such an analytical video on even MH's main characters. I mean characters like Frankie and Draculara have personalities, but they don't have the depth, evolution, or complexity of EAH characters. I don't think it's fair to say that Raven destroying the book changed Apple's true love or Daring's destiny. It's flat out stated in the books that they THINK this is Daring's destiny, but no one is ever really sure of a Charming's destiny until it happens. It's also implied that Daring was always going to be Rosabella's prince and the beast. I don't remember where it was implied in the diaries, but in the Shanon Hale books (SPOILERS AHEAD) in the final book A Wonderlandiful Life, wonderland magic is used to tranform most of the characters into literal iterations of either their name or destinies. Cerise turns into a wolf pup, Ashlynn turns into a glass slipper, and Daring turns into a small beast. Not a specific animal, but an animalistic creature. I'd say there were plenty of hints that Daring was never Apple's destined prince, and since any Charming can fill any roll calling for a non-specific royal, I think it could be argued that Darling was always Apple's true love. I have also spent an obscene amount of time and thought on this series, in case that wasn't abundantly clear.
@venuslove-i1v
@venuslove-i1v 2 года назад
I personally don't think Darling was always supposed to be Apple's true love, either though. I think the creators didn't go with it until after fans wanted in when they saw Dragon Games. First off, Darling's profile states in her romantic section that she "likes guys who are pure of heart". She wasn't vague like some other characters were (Raven, Apple, Melody, and Nina). She explicitly said she liked guys. Secondly, in Way Too Wonderland she played the role as the Looking--Glass White Knight up against Chase Redford's Red Knight, which seems to me that initially they wanted Darling to play that role at first. I personally think Raven and Apple were supposed to be true loves at first, but Mattel probably didn't want their lead character (Raven) to be queer. There were many hints, including Apple having a futuristic dream about her and Raven drinking coffee together. Both of them also had vague romantic interests too. I do have some tidbits though. Creator Scott W. Forbes actually stated that two other characters (they were backgrounders and black characters) were supposed to be based off the Beauty and The Beast. So it is possible that the change was made for Daring to be the Beast sometime after the first volume of episodes.
@SketchyCoyote
@SketchyCoyote 2 года назад
@@venuslove-i1v Ok, two things: one, I just want to acknowledge that we are essentially playing Calvin Ball here since every category of media, animated show, diaries, Shannon Hale books, the OTHER books, were all made independently and have their own continuities. Clearly Mattel didn't care enough about the story to create a solid story bible or anything before production to be followed, so we're really trying to piece together a coherent story from related but completely separately made media. The second thing is I think you misconstrued my meaning a little bit. When I say "Darling was always Apple's prince", I don't mean Mattel had that planned from the beginning. I can 100% guarantee you Mattel did not plan for Apple, or any other character, to be queer. This was a natural evolution created by the people making the show. No, when I said Darling was always Apple's prince I meant within in the world of the show, if that makes sense? I'm suggesting that if Raven had signed the storybook as intended and everything played out as expected Darling still would have been the one to wake up Apple. But again, it's weird to assert because clearly there was no long term plan for the series. I just felt like there was no evidence that things were forced to change when Raven rebelled. I thought the show made it clear that you could still opt in to your destiny and have it go down exactly as planned if everyone consented.
@venuslove-i1v
@venuslove-i1v Год назад
@@SketchyCoyote In Way Too Wonderland, when Raven touched the real Storybook of Legends it changed Raven's whole personality, as if forcing her to be evil. I'd wager if they did sign the real storybook (which they were going to do eventually according to Headmaster Grimm) everything would be just as it was with their parents; it seems the real storybook of legends had a strange power to control their personality and actions. The book would have forced them to do things traditionally whether they wanted to or not. So I do believe that Apple would have acted in her mother's footsteps, marrying a Prince Charming instead because the book would have probably forced her too (or at least that is what is implied). But she would have been okay with that. Raven, however, was not and Apple didn't want Raven to be forced to be evil after seeing what kind of person Raven would become. Once the real book was destroyed in Wonderland, that is when people were "supposedly" able to make a choice without being forced to do things through the storybook. Yet even still it seems like some things happened based on fate rather than choice. For example, even after signing the book, you would think Darling being Apple's true love would be based on choice. But it's not. Darling awakened Apple because of "fate" instead, which actually contradicts the message of "choice". Apple never actually chose Darling. It would have been different if Apple and Darling had various bonding moments beforehand even as friends, leading to Apple's heart being more inclined to love Darling over Daring. But none of that ever happened. Which is why it just seems like Apple's fate has "changed" because the book wasn't signed rather than her conscious choice for Darling to be her "prince charming" because of "true love" or vice versa either. If Raven was the one to awaken Apple I would have believed that this was based on Apple's own heart. But instead it was Darling whom she has no bond with. But I am aware that some media contradicts. Darling in the books doesn't even use mouth-to-mouth CPR. She used chest compressions. So Darling made the choice to be heroic and use CPR instead of the idea of true love's kiss to awaken Apple. The issue here is that the writers seem like they changed their minds after Dragon Games, but it ended up causing an inconsistency. And so instead, we are left with the narrative that Darling awakened Apple because of "true love" when there is no evidence that they actually loved each other. With this info, we can only conclude now that it was "fate" that influenced this and that fate was changed because no one signed the storybook. Daring also turned into a beast because of fate as well; he didn't make a conscious decision to become the beast until afterwards, when he was starting to like Rosabella. If he signed the storybook, however, the book would have more than likely forced him to be Apple's prince. At least, that is the conclusion I have come to after reviewing Way Too Wonderland and Raven's reaction to the book. Of course, I do recognize that the media is all created independently and doesn't always line up with each other. I wish they had executed some elements of the story with better planning, though. I agree that Mattel didn't care enough to think things through. As a result there were a lot of plot holes and inconsistencies. They are a doll/toy company. They didn't care much about the surrounding media as much as they cared about the dolls sold.

I personally loved all of Apple's character, so much so see is my favorite character. However, some people don't like her, and I understand that. What I don't understand, some fans blindly hate her for the sole purpose of her being rude and being obsessed with her destiny. What they fail to realize the reasons she acts like that is a product of her upbringing, something she couldn't control. Snow White was constantly dangling the fact that she needed to complete her destiny, so much so I imagine Apple tied it to her self worth. She felt like she NEEDED to fulfill her destiny, or her mother would hate her. Either she was correct, or it's not hard for her to think that judging by how Snow treats her. Also- I found the part about Darling especially sad. While it isn't outright stated, the fandom has collectively agreed that Apple is a lesbian, judging by her true love being Darling. I agree 100% with that theory, yet it makes the fact she was fully prepared to spend the rest of her life with a man she couldn't be attracted to if she tried just for the sake of following her mother footsteps all the more sad.

She has a lot of reasons as to why she is the way she is, and it's wonderful to see all the aspects of her, including how while she wants her destiny and wants Raven to be the evil queen she also wants Raven to come to that conclusion on her own terms, not being tricked or forced into it. If anything, I have an even more appreciation of her representing the kids who commit to society, even to the broken rules that pressure them. I found her a very relatable, very well utilized character. It's really a shame that most of the fandom hates her so much, and I never really understand it. speaking as someone who hasn't watched much of the series, I think it's absolutely reasonable, as viewers from THIS world, to have some hatred for Apple at first despite her overall kindness. at first, the rebels absolutely seem to be "correct" overall. yes, each side TECHNICALLY has their own selfish reasons, but the rebels are basically the "let people be who they want to be" side. to viewers looking into their world, it looks much more selfish to sacrifice the freedom of others just so you can GUARANTEE your happy ending, to take away any choice and FORCE some to suffer just because YOU gain something. the royals _really_ seem like they are supporting the definitively bad thing because we're comparing it to our world and assume that the consequences of not following destiny is overblown. that is, until we find out that there are some ACTIVE negative consequences after the book is destroyed (ACTIVE as opposed to some people simply not being guaranteed the life they were looking forward to. they're not DOOMED to suffer with no happily ever after, they just can't sit back and let destiny happen) tl;dr: because of how OUR world works, it makes sense to hate Apple at first because to us, it starts out looking like "let EVERYONE be a bit selfish" rebels vs "but *I* want MY destiny handed to me" royals
@teacoon6399

Well, if you do a bit of digging you'd find that some of what the rebels are doing do actually have consequences. Faeries are dying / disappearing ( sentient beings in their own right, despite being designated helpers ) Plus, to be fair to Apple, she almost died as a child falling down a well because she strayed from the path, even for harmless fun. BOTH choices have consequences, that's how I see it. There is hardly a choice someone can make without there being consequences. In regards to the Royals, it's forcing people to pretty much be slaves to a pre-written path. In the case of the Rebels, it's taking the risk that some people and creatures may very well cease to exist.

From Farrah Goodfairys diary: "I can't disappear. You know Raven Queen, The Evil Queen's daughter? She changed things so people don't have to follow their story if they don't want to. Nobody's gone POOF!" The raindrop fairy shook her head. "Fairies aren't like princesses and heroes. We are magic. Just last week, the Blue-Haired Fairy from Pinocchio disappeared. She didn't want to follow her destiny, and now she's a lost memory. Don't let the same thing happen to you." With a POOF! they disappeared. I believe that fairys can disappear but it seems the blue fairy did it to herself because she didn't want to take part in her story and lost her role to play. It's's an interesting and complex concept and I wish it was continued on/ explored more. I think it's since that type of fairy in those stories tend to just be a deus ex machina. If Cinderella never wanted to go to the ball, or just figured out a way to do so on her own, the Fairy Godmother never would have needed to appear in the story, and would therefore not exist within fairy tale legend. The Blue Fairy I feel doesn't have as good of an explanation, as she appeared to bring Pinocchio to life, and I feel like no matter what destiny Cedar would want, she'd probably still want to be alive. My point is though that while other characters could make slightly different decisions and other characters could still exist, fairies of that sort usually only show up to move the plot forward and then immediately disappear again, so if the plot doesn't happen, they don't appear.

There have also been jokes in the fandom of Apple taking one step forward and then several steps back, but thats realistic, sometimes healing and coming to terms with things and bettering yourself as a person isn't linear. Especially in Apple's case, as the adults around her took advantage of her preconception of following your destiny, the evil queen blatantly manipulated her and played on her insecurities, and Snow White was extremely controlling over her and despite loving her daughter it was clear that Apple had immense pressure to be perfect and always on top. Apple is a product of her environment, a perfect example of how growing up indoctrinated can effect a person and how they may lean towards their pre-conceived ideas over what is morally correct, and in Apple's case, although very selfish at times she thinks her ideas are correct

I feel somewhere between betrayal and empathy for the character but I think that makes them all very human and seeing the different influencing factors and how they impact who is nice. Over all we are being way to harsh on apple but there is a point in many sides, we are also left hanging in the series and I think apple would have turned into a lovable character if she was allowed the chance to grow. with more influence from loving friends instead of greedy adults.

The thing is, the biggest defense argument that can be made for Apple is her fear that everybody and their stories would disappear if somebody didn't sign. However, throughout the series that doesn't appear to be her biggest concern at all. Sure, she mentions it a few times like in throne coming for instance. But 99% of the time when somebody asks her why she wants Raven to sign so badly it's because she wants HER destiny. If they made it clear that her biggest reason for why she's okay with some people being subjected to bad futures was because of people dying, then I would completely understand her character. Not only that, but nobody was disappearing after Raven refused to sign. Sure, it's mentioned once in a doll diary that some fairies were disappearing, but it's never explicitly clear in the show. Making Apple's motives even more perplexing. Raven was not selfish. It's not that she values her future over everybody else's lives, it's that she just truly just doesn't believe that everybody and their stories will disappear if she doesn't sign. In Thronecoming, when she DOES think that people will suffer, she offers to sign. Apple's biggest issues are her being too insecure to wear glasses or her dyeing her hair blond. Raven's biggest issues are her being outcasted from her peers, being hated and misjudged everywhere she goes, and constantly being pressured by everybody around her to sign up for a horrific future.

I LOVED EAH when it was on, and Apple's complexity was one of the many, many reasons why. At first, all of them seem relatively one-note, but as the series and story progresses, there are so many more layers revealed, and the depth of character is so good, especially for the more popular characters (Hopper and Humphrey never really got a lot of depth, sadly). Darling saving Apple with the "kiss of life" was perfect, and it fit with Darling's desired destiny. She wanted to be a prince like her brothers, rather than a damsel. Dragon Games was one of the best movies because of how it subverted expectations, and did give Apple what she thought she wanted - she lived out her fairy tale, just not in the way she expected. I'd love to hear your take on all the characters, honestly. My favorites of all were Briar and Maddie, with Raven at a close third. Apple's up there, too, and I always thought she had a thing for Raven, which was why she was so insistent that Raven follow her destiny, so they would be close. I can't imagine the Apple we see not forgiving Raven, given that she's actively trying to get Raven to poison her at times.

It would be cool to see Snow White’s reaction to Apple and Darling dating in a future webisode. In fact, I think it would make for an interesting arc for snow. She wants her daughter to fit the Snow White mold perfectly. What if she got so caught up in predetermined destiny that she prioritized it over her daughter’s happiness? I feel like there couldve been an amazing arc for Snow White if the show hadn’t gotten canceled. Imagine: Snow White freaks out because Apple is rebelling from her destiny by being with a princess instead of a prince, and apple gets into a huge fight with her. Snow White realizes all of the things she pushed on her daughter and then apologizes and reconciles.

This kinda interesting (albeit generic) on the concept of followed predetermined "destiny" (Royal) or write your own future (Rebel) but yet, some of them have a symbiotic link in a form of a house of cards. It is why it's important to have a mindset that the future is not set in stone but its up to them to build their future.

And if course Darling once again blessing us with the good stuff! And I'm honestly here for it! Now on to the topic, as someone who was a teenager when EAH first came out, I remember seeing the Apple White hate train from it's inception, I do agree that a lot of folks do take their dislike for her a bit too far at times. But with that being said, I can understand why she has a lot of vocal detractors in the fandom. Now I just want to make things clear: I personally don't hate Apple. She's not really my favorite EAH character ( Maddie, Briar, & Ashlynn already earned that title for me.). But I don't dislike her enough to want to be openly vile towards her. Even back in the day when both EAH & the Anti Apple White sentiment was at it's height, I didn't really dislike her. Just found her annoying and frustrating at worst. Anyway, I think part of why Apple is such a contentious character for a lot of people may have to do with the fact that ( at least at the start of the cartoon series. I don't know how she's handled in the books. Since I haven't really read them.) she more or less acts as EAH's equivalent of those quote unquote "good christian kids" who grew up in fundamentalist/hyper conservative households and can't handle when face with opposing viewpoints (religious or not.). And I think for some people, she may be a reminder of those who may have harmed them in the past. Or at worst of who THEY used to be! Now am I saying ALL of Apple's detractors feel this way? No. Obviously not all of them do. But it wouldn't be too much of a stretch if some of them do dislike her for those reasons. On a side note, I can't help but feel like Apple's character arc could low-key be a metaphor for overcoming religious trauma. Cause that's honestly the kind of vibe her development gives off. Then again: I'm probably just just a grown man who's overthinking about a cartoon that was just made to sell dolls to tween girls! XD So what do I know? *Shrugs*

Honestly, I can see the parallels. Apple telling Ashlynn something like "I may think you're making a mistake and what you're doing is wrong, but we'll always be friends" really mirrors a common sentiment a lot of people may have heard in worse contexts.

one of the reasons i love ever after high so much is that they never let their characters be just one dimensional tropes. apple easily fits the mold of what would be the typical popular mean girl, and yet she's far from that. same goes for briar, she could've just been presented as an airheaded party girl but she also had depth. the creators really had a great story to tell with all the characters and you can tell how much love and thought they put into everything.

Apple white’s fears would resonate with most audiences if we didn’t already know that choosing a different life wouldn’t end the world. This is already established quite early with Cerise and her family. Her mother was able to fuck what was supposed to be her main villain and nothing happened, the audience is told quite early that Apple’s fears aren’t true so people are less likely to be empathic with her, yeah Apple doesn’t know, but even still once the mystery of that is gone then it truly makes Apple look less valid. The iconic convo with Raven and Apple in Homecoming really doesn’t hit in Apple’s favor, because again, we KNOW she is wrong, nothing happens if they deviate from their story. Cerise is a walking example of that, so her complaint about Raven taking a chance when Raven herself KNOWS cerise is a walking example that’s she right, makes no sense. There is also something to be said in how Apple can sometimes come off as insincere. I don’t know if this is deliberate with the voice actress but as someone who spent a lot of time with fake people it can be very annoying. Apple is very much about appearances and no one likes someone like that, a person who is obsessed with keeping an false image of themselves isn’t a gonna resonate with most people. Apple kinda comes off as your average conservative. Someone who lives by tradition and oppressive rules and justifies trying to control other people with their views with “it’s for our own good.” Someone who doesn’t consider that there isn’t one way to live life, which is why so many people don’t like Apple, yes Apple is a very complex character and she isn’t this evil person but it need to be put in perspective that a lot of the criticism she gets, though exaggerated, do hit home for a lot of people especially for Americans.

Thank you for this video! You explained everything perfectly! Apple was always one of my favourites because she always stood out to me. She was so complex. I actually never knew about the fairies dying from the dolls because I never bought them, that add's more to the story lol. I wish they would have mentioned it in the series though. Also I wish they would have added more Apple and Darling scenes, because they barely had any screen time together. And I honestly can't see them together because of this. I can see her more with Raven though. Because of the characters and how they would fit well together romantically, so I personally would have liked Raven to wake her instead..This show needs to come back!

I don’t know if I’ll ever like Apple, even though she knows Raven would be locked away after being driven homeless and demonized forever if she was a good little stepping block even after it was implied they wouldn’t go poof, it’s super shitty of her to not even say that she’s officially pardon her after doing something she knows Raven would be coerced to do.

People go off the rails with hating fictional characters for sure, but I fully get why people hated Apple so much. It doesn't really matter how she came to have her beliefs and convictions, her beliefs still hurt people or would lead to their suffering, and she was willing to disregard this because of what she fantasized for herself, not a reality, but a 'promised' fantasy. I feel like a good comparison would be fundamentalist conservatives. They can be good people, they can genuinely not be hateful or as terrible as so many are, they can genuinely care about others, but their ideals and fixation on maintaining the status quo, and willingness to disregard the harm their beliefs do to so many others is what makes them hated. And that 'i don't care what happens to you, I want my happily ever after' mentality is the root cause of so many problems in society. It is selfish. It is also the root of psychopathy. Raven's fear and refusal to follow the dark paths 'promised' to her was understandable, espevially with knowing her end point. How messed up would it be if you knew first hand the path someone else set for you would lead to your demise and unhappiness, but you had no choice but to follow? Regardless of what she chose to do, she would suffer anyway so what did she have to lose? She took a chance hoping that not only she, but her friends wouldn't have to suffer. Because if the prophecies are wrong and she can make her own destiny, everyone wins, and if they're right, it is a tragedy but the cycle of abuse is finally broken, and no one has to suffer anymore. I wouldn't call Apple 'the devil' like some, but the girl's got some serious issues.

Amen to this whole video. This is what I loved about EAH as a kid. It feels like real world conflicts in a way. When I was a kid I watched my friends talk about the show and definitively say that they were a royal and a rebel because this was the only right way. But I always felt really quite iffy about it all. Both sides both had valid and good arguments. That’s why when Poppy O’hair came into play as a “Roybel” I was so relieved and pumped that I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t back one side completely. EAH is phenomenal and deserves all the praise it gets.

I never saw Apple as the antagonist, since I knew her strive for order was result of manipulation and pressure from her society. I saw Professed Grimm and the Evil Queen as that. Regardless, I still disliked her 💀 She’s still an immature girl who disregarded everyone else’s horrible destinies for her picture perfect, no bumps in the road destiny. Apple blinded herself to her own best friend’s tragedy, and it’s almost as if she expected everyone to enjoy their inevitable death because they would poof otherwise? That doesn’t make sense. That’s also why I absolutely loved Briar’s statement in Thronecoming “easy for you to say… you get poisoned for what? A week?” The delivery of that line was exactly what I always wanted to say to her. Apple got character development, but that doesn’t stop me from absolutely hating her character in the beginning of the series.

Growing up, Apple was so freaking annoying (she still is a little bit), but now… I get her. I do think she can be selfish, but where she’s coming from is understandable. She is the daughter of Snow White, she comes from a famous family and her story is legendary. Since her story is so important, it was engraved in her since birth that she must carry on its legacy and that she would get to live happily ever after. But now with Raven not wanting to follow her destiny, Apple felt like everything she was told since birth was a lie and ripped away from her. Raven can’t even be at fault either, because… who on earth would want her destiny-? Except of course for the actual Evil Queen. Point is, a lot of the characters have really sucky destinies, ok? They just suck. You either get to follow your destiny and just chill afterwards (like Maddy), or have a bad fate (like Duchess), have a happily ever after that comes at a cost (like Briar), or live the rest of your life being feared and punished (like Raven).

While I agree that Apple is, at her core (lol) a good and kind hearted person, I absolutely disagree that there isn't a good and bad side in the Royal-Rebel conflict and that both ideologies are equally valid. The Royal ideology, of which Apple's the figurehead, stands for a world in which there are people born privileged and people born underprivileged (which is true), BUT, and this is a big but, people are ultimately born in their deserving place and that nothing could and/or should be done to improve the life of those who are oppressed by the system. Raven and the other people who have bad endings or are bound to a life that they don't want (which includes some royals, even beside Briar, like Ashlynn, who would be forced to break up with the love of her life and have what's effectively an arranged marriage, or Duchess, who is bound to die heartbroken) are effectively the minorities in this world, people mistreated by an unjust system and treated only as the stepping stone for the wonderful lives of those at the top. Apple's position towards Raven is basically: "I know your life will be horrible, but I need for it to happen so I can have my happy life" and her being like "I want Raven to willingly sacrifice her life for the sake of mine, but I'm not going to trick her, I'm such a good person" doesn't actually mean her mindset and ideology are equally valid to minorities wanting to be given the chance to just live their life and not be treated badly. I'm certain that at the beginning of the show, the creators did think that Royals and Rebels were in an equal place, with the whole "pick a side thing", but as the show went on they realized how messed up the idea of half the school wanting the other half to sacrifice their lives for the sake of theirs was, and decided to give Apple a more antagonistic place is the story. I mean, have we all forgotten about the True Hearts Day? How she basically tells one of her best friends "I think you choosing to stay with the love of your life instead of marrying a man you don't care for (and maybe don't even know) is a terrible idea, but I'm such a good person because I will tolerate it". She has a good heart, but that's not enough to redeem her, after all: the road to hell is paved with good intentions. To me, Apple allowing and even encouraging the destruction of the book was her moving away for the Royal mindset and finally supporting a world were everyone could get a happy ending, not just a privileged few.
@OpticalSorcerer
@OpticalSorcerer 2 года назад
I actually never read the books, but even in the show I knew the royals got a bad rap: they were being hated for following the rules, and even when they disagreed with the rebels, they were kind and heroic. The writers tried to bog it down by making them look selfish and entitled, but it didn't work.

I also love how much you can see this coping mechanism that has to do with control, she gets VERY good grades, excels in extracurriculars too, is liked by her peers and her teachers. Doesn't she deserve a happy ending? If she doesn't get her destiny, her whole life preparing to be THE MONARCH won't happen.

Yeah they ignore that. The Evil Queen never marries Snow White's dad in the EAH version of the fairytale, because there are many different non-related Charming princes. They briefly mention this in the episode Blondie Branches out, and more explicitly in the books.
