Don't forget "I believe." The first band I was in covered that. I remember howling the harmony on "There. Is. No. Love. In. This. World. Any. More." for about 5 minutes straight as the crowd danced til they dropped. One of the best songs in our set. (Another was a cover of The Clash version of "Pressure Drop" by Toots and the Maytals.)

Beach Boys from a dirty town in the late 70s is a spot on description! Manchester was indeed a pretty polluted, industrial town, and Buzzcocks helped display the angst some of the young people were feeling with catchy melodies and harmonies
@marinman3551
@marinman3551 10 месяцев назад
It's not a town. it's a city and has been since 1853....its also the world's first industrial city...a center of commerce second to non....the millworkers refusal to handle slave derived cotton and then ww2 changed that, the industrial north had no investment for decades....it wasn't a dirty town it was a f☆☆☆☆☆g awful place to grow up...but the people are top...the best infact..p.s sorry that was a little pedantic 😂

@gregsager2062
@gregsager2062 10 месяцев назад
@@marinman3551 Americans often use "town" as a literary diminutive for cities, as Alex was doing in this instance. Just to cite two musical examples about my own city (both of which were staples of the Frank Sinatra repertoire), there's "Chicago, Chicago, that toddlin' town" and "my kind of town, Chicago is ... one town that won't let you down." If you go out for a big-spending evening in a big city in the U.S., it's called "a night on the town" (which is also the name of an album by London native Rod Stewart). The central part of an American city is called "downtown" -- and there's no hiding behind British disdain for American English where *that* word is concerned, because Petula Clark's biggest hit in the '60s was "Downtown".

Maybe A & A could sit down to see "24 Hour Party People", a fun and fictionalised movie about the rise of the Manchester sound in the later 1970s and early 1980s with good actors and some wild cameos. The commentary track on the DVD by the actual Tony Wilson is hilarious, too! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HFiyEegpKUM.html

@gregsager2062 I'm aware of that as I have family in upstate New York...but we're not talking about the states we're talking about England......in England a City a Town Village or a Hamlet are very different places I was merely highlighting this fact, I have no clue as to your intimation that British have disdain for American English, the English language has been influenced for Centuries from the Romans Anglo Saxons Vikings Norman's, Latin, Germanic influences, and from the mid 20th century massive American influence through entertainment/music/films/theatre, all of them embraced

One of my favourite songs of all time. The Fine Young Cannibals also do a great cover of it, but with a totally different vibe. For other bands around at this time, try The Undertones and their song Teenage Kicks (the late great British DJ John Peel's favourite song of all time - when I was a teenager his late night radio show on BBC Radio 1 was a must listen if you wanted to hear new bands that were worth your attention and time.)

Buzzcocks laid the groundwork for pop punk. Green Day has them to thank for sure. If you like this try Everybody's Happy Nowadays, What Do I Get, and or I Don't Mind. Northern Ireland had a few similar bands pop up around the same time. Try The Undertones and or Stiff Little Fingers. Peter Shelley from Buzzcocks was semi-out of the closet when he wrote this song. Not very heard of in 1978, especially in punk. He wrote the song about being attracted another young man. Glad you finally got to them!

I am a big punk rock fan and even did a punk rock radio show in the early 90s and the Buzzcocks have a really special place in my heart. They wrote so many great pop songs. This one is great but there is a whole list of great songs. I would also recommend "I Don't Mind", "Orgasm Addict", "What Do I Get?", "Love You More", "Nosie Annoys", "Promises", "Lipstick". "Everybody's Happy Nowadays", "Harmony In My Head" and "You Say You Don't :Love Me". But this is just scratching the surface nearly everything is great. They have great melodies and good lyrics. This made me think of another of my favorite bands that maybe you may want to check out if you aren't familiar with them, but when I first started doing my punk rock radio show I had also gotten into the Chicago band Screeching Weasel. They also have great melodies and sometimes deep lyrics. If you are interested in checking them out I would recommend "My Brain Hurts", "Don't Turn Out the Lights", "It's All In My Head" or "One Step Beyond". But they are another artist that has a rich and wonderful discography

The MOST underrated punk band. "Another Music in a Different Kitchen" is the most consistently brilliant punk album ever made.

The best thing about this song is that it's relatable for anyone who's been alive for 15 years or longer. For people my age who went through our first heartbreak in the 70s & felt maybe we could write a song to express it, it was a complete pisser to discover that Pete Shelley had already written it. & better than we ever could. & it's not just this one either, there's half a dozen of the fuckers ! " What Do I Get ? " is the one that summed my own frustrations up the most. But at different times it could equally have been Ever Fallen in Love...? , Lipstick, or Promises. They all applied at one time or another. I saw them live in 78 & 81 Then in 99 I was the DJ in the venue they played at & got to meet Pete backstage. He actually collared me to say he'd enjoyed the tracks I'd played. That did very nicely for me ! He then said " Do you like champagne? " I don't particularly, but I wasn't about to turn down having a drink with him so i said sure. He went into the dressing room & came back with champagne...in 2 pint glasses ! Sensitive, art school punk love poet he may have been, but he was still a lad from a coal mining town.

I was a mate of Pete’s and we played in the same band until Pete went his punk way and I continued down the rock road. I was the drummer ‘dog boydell’ who was mentioned in the first bio, but expunged from the second. Pete was a great childhood friend and we continued to be friends. In our kids gang we called him ‘ Magpie’.. RIP Magpie. I have a video on my channel about his hometown’s tribute.

The singer, Pete Shelley, was instrumental in bringing the Secs Pistols to the north of England at arguably the most influential gig in music history.

I love Pete Shelley's lyrics and was (still am!) a huge fan of the Buzzcocks. There are several brilliant songs worth reviewing - What Do I Get, I Don't Mind, Love You More were the singles that preceded Ever Fallen In Love and are all absolute bangers!
