If you want to increase your odds of getting a well-paying job in underwater welding (and if you haven't yet started your apprenticeship or diver training), I'd suggest a different path: commercial diver's training. You'll get the specialty training in underwater welding and cutting, underwater pipefitting, etc. while also getting trained in commercial diving, which uses different equipment and different methods, for the most part, than recreational diving.
