Taylor Diving & Salvage was one of the pioneers of this kind of work in the North Sea back in the mid 1970's. The oil companies had to prove that they could repair a pipeline at 1000 feet (300 meters) before the Norwegian government would allow a pipeline to be laid from the offshore oil rigs and across the Norwegian trench and on to land in Norway. This work shown here uses much more modern equipment but the same basic techniques and methods. This looks like much more shallow water.

Saturation diving is no joke. The cartilage in their joints compress when they’re under pressure, so more non-on-bone contact. They live in habitat, under pressure, approximately 30-days at a time. These boys do a most necessary job, they get paid very well for it, but their career under pressure has a shelf life. If you meet a commercial diver at a bar, buy him a drink...he’s earned it. At the very least, you are guaranteed a good sea story.

@carlsaganlives5112 5 лет назад
I was in the N. D. T. field for many years, and you're right, I don't know why they showed plate instead of pipe. Also showed magnetic particle and ultrasound test, as well as destructive, but no x-ray! I'm sure every pipeline weld you made was x-rayed right after completion. These industries and companies can't stand any down time, as I'm sure you know. Everyone waits for the 'accept', then jumps into high gear, right?
@Calscot1
@Calscot1 4 года назад
@@carlsaganlives5112 Its not just the welders that were being "tested". First off you have to qualify the process, fitment and weld procedures. A lot of the footage is related to that. Also much of the welding on the actual repair was the clam shell sections which would have been welded horizontally at the 3-9 positions. So those welder test plates shown would be applicable to that part. X-Ray would not have been viable on most of the welding. You have a pipeline, with a big sealing clamp on it, then a clam shell cover being welded over all that. No way you can X-ray through all those layers and achieve the sensitivity required. The Circumferential welds to the main line yes, but that's it. Modern UT phased array systems are now being accepted in place of RT in many cases/applications today. I was a Sat diver in the North Sea (2W Taylor/Comex/Rockwater) for 15 years. I was CSWIP/ PCN 3.9 UT qualified and an ASNT III in all the NDT disciplines and AWS senior certified welding inspector. I worked on many hyperbaric welding jobs and performed all the NDT and welding inspections.

Its totally astounding the dollar value that is generated when there is a moving flow. Also here there might be environmental spill concerns, although this line seems to be gas only , not the liability of oil transport.

So they basically weld a sleeve around the area that was patched up by this clamp and just keep everything in place?

We are the ones paying the bill. We do it one gallon at a time every time we go to pump gas.

I wonder why the welding was not done in (TIG). It seems that it would have less of a failure rate and easier to control than stick. A lot less grinding and prep work. Just wondering.

James Kennedy these welders probably hardly ever have to grind. some of the best in the world. wire wheel and done most of the time is my bet.

I feel we should completely finish exploring the entire sea floor before going to mars.

We should build a vertical pipeline into space and, using those 56,000+ hp pumps, drain 70% of the ocean, to make exploration easier
