I was bored one day in the mid 80's and decided to pull the frets out of an old Ovation Breadwinner that I'd stripped the white paint off of. Carefully filled the fret slots with some strips of walnut... been playing fretless guitar on & off for close to 30yrs now. You have to use flatwound strings if you don't want to chew up the fingerboard. Also I read since the walnut strips aren't as dense as the original fret tangs it's best to tune it to a lower pitch than concert, otherwise there's too much compression and the neck will bow quickly. I'll go as low as a low C on the 6th string with thicker strings (.013-.056). An alternative is to just file the frets until they're flat to the fingerboard (not my preference). Or as some bass players do (i.e. Jaco); put epoxy on the fingerboard to use round wound strings. With some practice your pitch will get better. One disadvantage is that you're typical chord shapes will become somewhat limited.... but it forces you into new harmonic(chord) directions as well. it's worth having the exotic sound of a fretless imho.
@nwimpney
@nwimpney 9 лет назад
filing the frets won't work well at all. the tangs have barbs in them, so there will be gaps where the barb has compressed the wood, etc. I defretted an old bass guitar, and I did it by pulling the frets, filling the slots with bondo (overfilled a bit), and sanding it back smooth with a radius block I made (using the neck as a form, before the bondo). I then painted on several coats of CA (super glue), and wet sanded it up to 2000 grit. It's not going to be quite as durable as epoxy, but it's pretty tough, and much cheaper and easier to apply. You can't use cheap epoxy, btw, but conventional CA glue seems to work just great. (I used loctite brand) Also, I was shooting for something (very) vaguely like the sound of a stand up bass, so I got some nylon wrapped strings (rotosound 88). I quite like them, and they're much easier on the board as well.
@nwimpney
@nwimpney 9 лет назад
also, your fretboard shouldn't need to contribute that much to keeping your neck straight... That's what the trussrod is for. ;)
@GlennMichaelThompson
@GlennMichaelThompson 9 лет назад
nwimpney Filling the frets has worked well for me. Every luthier I know offers this option when converting to fretless. I didn't go into every detail in my comment. A couple of the things I didn't mention.... I glued the walnut in and helped fill the space mixing the glue (super glue for wood) with sawdust to fill any spaces left by the barbs.. and put more of the glue in w/ a syringe. I also sanded the fingerboard with a wood block of the same radius (after having carefully sliced most of the excess hardwood with my wood carving tools). I've tried the black tape/nylon wound strings, still use them from time to time. But I like the thicker steel strings for a different tone. And they sound better on this instrument tuned down usually 1/2 to a whole step. Sometimes lower for more of that bass tone you're talking about. I kept it tuned to concert pitch for the first 18 to 20 years, without any neck problems other than more truss adjustment than it used to need. Drastic weather changes where I live too. But I was also using an .010 on the high E. I got the idea of tuning lower in the last 8 to 10 years... mostly because of listening to John Stowell playing fretless guitar and using lower tunings. I had read an article by Dan Erlewine about tuning lower if you're using wooden inserts, so I thought it prudent to mention. Annnd,,, the neck on my guitar is incredibly thin (for me). But 30 years and it still plays fine! Take care.
@nwimpney
@nwimpney 9 лет назад
I meant filing (with a file), as in cutting them down with a file, leaving the tangs in the slot. I think that's really ugly, and a bad way to do it. Filling the slots, yes. :) Honestly, I think one would be better off just leaving the slots empty than leaving the rough fret tangs in the slots. A lot of fret slots are cut with a very slight V at the top too, to better clear the usually-imperfect corner between the tang and the bottom of the fret, so that'll leave an exposed rough edge if it's just filed/sanded off. I think the wood inserts needing you to tune lower is probably insignificant on anything with a reasonable truss rod. With a very slim neck, you might notice, and have to give the rod a slight tweak. With a beefier neck, I doubt you would even see a difference. If you have a weird neck with a non adjustable, or non-existant rod, I might be worried about bowing, but otherwise I wouldn't sweat it. That's not to say there isn't some merit to down tuning, either. I actually noticed that my short scale bass has an interesting tone, due to the lower tension on the strings. Contrary to what I've heard a lot of people suggest, I've found that I get a much heavier, chunkier sound on a short scale and/or lighter strings. Playing down-tuned on a normal long-scale is probably going to give you the same chunkyness at a lower pitch. Heavier gauge and longer scale lengths seem to be a bit brighter and more piano-like in comparison.

Distortion doesn't hide a deviations from just intonation IMO, but it exposes them, because the subtones and beats that are created with distortion are much more sensitive to the tuning than the undistorted notes.

For anybody wanting to do this, make sure that you do slides instead of bends whenever possible if you want to preserve the fret board. Especially softer finger boards will get pretty chewed up from playing, but you can coat it with epoxy to increase the durability. Epoxy also makes the notes sound more glassy than a wood board.

KillSwitch66627 You can also use superglue. It's not as tough as epoxy, but the right kind of epoxy is $$$. You can't use the 5 minute stuff from the hardware store because it'll turn yellow and weak from light, etc. Not sure if youtube will eat imgur links, but imgur.com/mXrdv7V is a pic of my superglue job on my bass neck, wet sanded to 2000 grit IIRC. I did it a while ago, so I don't remember exact details, but I think I just painted on a few coats (use a brush, not paper towels. It can catch fire!) then sanded it smooth, repeat until shiny. :) It's ordinary loctite brand super glue. I think I went through about 2 bottles.

I love how they say "It's not in tune." The truth is they are not PLAYING in tune. Not a problem with the guitar. The problem is they aren't used to having to stop the string in precisely the right spot to play the pitch spot on, because the frets do that for you and take the work out of it. Playing fretless is NOT EASY. Ask any classical string player.
@nwimpney
@nwimpney 9 лет назад
well, they probably need to check the tuning and intonation. The intonation is probably _way_ off unless they lowered the nut most of the way to the fretboard. They're not playing it well, either, but the setup is definitely important, even on a fretless.
@djosephj
@djosephj 9 лет назад
I find playing fretless way easier. I started on cello though. Frets make noise and fretmarks on the neck are more confusing than a clean neck IMO.
@totallynotascam2805
@totallynotascam2805 9 лет назад
Me being a classical string player (Violin, Cello, and Piano (Because Pianos are also classical stringed instruments), I have to say playing fretless is actually pretty easy. You just have to memorize the spots. You can start with putting tapes where the pitch spot is, and then after a while, take them off.
@GlennMichaelThompson
@GlennMichaelThompson 9 лет назад
I don't think they actually understand how to approach a fretless guitar. Their stock licks and runs won't work. If you've never played a fretless before, start off slowly and make sure your fingers are where they need to be to hit correct pitches. These guys don't even tune the instrument. They're in a music store, surely there's a tuner around! This video does NOT show you how a fretless guitar sounds. The title is a misnomer.

Vigier have been making the fretless guitars since '89, long before Guthrie. The first big name to use a fretless guitar (a defretted strat) was Zappa in the mid to late 70's. This was then disseminated to his pupils with Below, Vai and others carrying it over. Vai used fretless on the Roth album and a fretless seven on Passion and Warfare. A lot of Jazz players use fretless guitars as well to get a more gypsy feel as you can get closer to fretless oud's and so on. The main problem with a steel strung fretless is that if you for get an bend one of the unwound strings it can snap back and really hurt. This seems to be compunded by the metal fingerboard on the Vigier.

Why the hell has it become some kind of a shitty trend to use distortion, when giving an example of how a guitar sounds?! I mean seriously, play it without any effects so we can hear what the guitar ACTUALLY sounds like. Pretty much any video about how a particular guitar sounds, the person playing it has the distortion cranked all the way up... bloody annoying.

Nonsense. I have a fretless and now when I play a normal guitar, it gets frustrating how these little metal bars are hindering my expression. Why would a violin or a cello be an instrument but not a fretless guitar? _Just_ 'cause of the rounded neck? An old bucket can be a musical instrument. My fretless definitely is a musical instrument and it makes sounds your guitar can't. These guys have not been practicing for years on one. There are so many cool things you can do, like droning while sliding notes around under the drone, doing "bends" that no guitar could do, w/out a tremolo bar (which would also effect the droning note)...and you can't apply a slide just to the b string while other strings ring out. And you do artificial harmonics, but can then slide them around and it sounds exactly like a theremin, only way easier to control.

Stick with frets. Not you personally, but for anybody concerned about control. No matter how precise one's fingers get, an actual fret is more precise. There will be unintended off-notes. Just my opinion though, I'm sure some appreciate the distinct sound.

@somkit9102

WhiteSaucage Scar Never heard of him, but I did just check him out. He's quite amazing actually. But I would not say his pitch is perfect. It is extremely accurate but listening for it, I could hear slight off pitch on occasion. Now, I'm not complaining. I was quite impressed actually, but he uses the lack of the fret's precision to his advantage, perhaps by making transitions smoother. I guess what I'm saying is that if one requires absolute precision, one should use frets. Otherwise, it can still sound great without, as in Fountainhead, and I'm sure others too.

@somkit9102
@somkit9102 8 лет назад
GW Bits But the same cannot be said for a fretless guitar. Nobody needs to put frets on a guitar, but there must be a reason that guitars have virtually always had frets throughout its history. The evolution of musical instruments seems to match fretless with bows, and frets with strumming or picking. Of course, the stand up bass is an exception, because it really does sound cool without frets. :)

The very beauty of the electric guitar in all it's guises is that you can do whatever you like on it, fretted or otherwise. Sounds like you need to go back and tell Paganini off for using improper technique on the violin. Yes, it isn't the best technique and can ruin the fretboard but it creates a sound that is unique and outside of what you would expect. I am sure given a few months with the guitar they would alter their technique but time and time again the stuffy classical ideals have proven to be boundaries and limits to creativity.

It looks like it has an ebony fingerboard, so I think he could get away with using roundwounds. Jaco Pastorius used them with a rosewood fingerboard, but he would practice on another bass to avoid chewing up the fingerboard. Some fretless bass players use roundwounds because it's easier to get certain sounds with them, but there is some risk of excessive fingerboard wear.

It would really help if somebody knew how to play a fretless instrument. It's one thing to be tone deaf, but to then try to play it off by saying that you're not actually off pitch and demonstrate by playing another off pitch riff.... And then as if nobody knows how a fretless instrument works at all, the second guy claims that the guitar is out of tune, and the guy on the right plays it off by agreeing with him. And if that guitar actually IS out of tune, that means they are sitting in a room with 6 guitars, 5 amplifiers, at least 3 microphones, quality soundproofing foam... and 0 guitar tuners, plus neither one of them knows how to tune a guitar.

EnigmaBlue That’s really easy to get. The cello could be used as a way to practice playing w/o frets . In addition, by bowing it one has infinite sustain AT THE VOLUME you start with , with option to change it at any point by pressing down or lightening your grip on the bow. Bow pressure, which cellists use to keep a consistent sound for long durations and at high volume, is definitely something you can’t do with an Ebow which uses laser technology, not physical contact.
