We did the Everest Three Passes trek in Nepal in April 2023 in partnership with Kathmandu-based trekking agency Himalayan Masters. Along with our guide, Govinda Rai, and porter, Prakas Tamang, we trekked from Lukla to Everest Base Camp via Kongma La (5547 m), then from EBC to Gokyo Lakes via Cho La (5368 m), and finally from Gokyo back to Lukla via Renjo La (5388 m).
Our trek took 17 days Kathmandu to Kathmandu, although we had planned for up to 22 days. We were already well acclimatised from our Langtang Valley and Gosainkunda treks (which we completed just a few days before flying to Lukla) so we spent one less night at Namche Bazaar than most people would. We recommend doing this trek anti-clockwise, crossing Kongma La first, and be sure to acclimatise properly before crossing your first pass. Acclimatisation hikes from Dingboche (up Nangkartshung) and Chukhung (up Chukhung Ri) are great options.
For more info about this trek, a complete breakdown of the route, suggested itineraries, maps, and advice and tips for the trail, check out our detailed written guides over on the blog (linked above) and our video guide ( • Complete Guide to EBC,... ).

Brilliant, thanks. It means a lot coming from someone like yourself who doesn’t comment. We’ll also be releasing a talking/guide video soon where we breakdown the planning necessities and discuss the trail… may be helpful if you’re thinking about doing this trek in the future. Anyway, thanks again 👍

The jaw dropping view of these massive mountains is just phenomenal. Watching it on TV is amazing …but I can’t imagine, standing in the presence of all of it ..and not just dropping to your knees in awe. congratulations and thank you for putting these videos together for everyone. They are just amazing. Your Sherpa/guide is to be commended.

Wow! Thank you for another beautiful creation! So many extraordinary shots. 💛 Altough I must say I've watched this one with mixed emtions. The landscape is astonishing and mesmerizing. But I like your journeys in solitude and this one was was busier in various ways. It reminded me of what I have seen and read about the impact of tourism in the Everest region. The doc I saw about how foreign tour operators left/are leaving behind the basecamp areas was truly apalling. So hope they will limit visitor numbers and set conditions like they do in other popular places.
@GoingTheWholeHogg
@GoingTheWholeHogg 6 месяцев назад
Thank you so much Kara, really glad you enjoyed it! The landscape is very special. It was a pleasure and privilege to do this trek, and we very much enjoyed the process of trying to capture it too. We do know what you mean about the busyness of this one - a bit of a departure from many of our other experiences and we do enjoy the solitude too. We did expect that here and said from the start that we would try to show that side of things as much as possible, and not try to hide it. Saying that, when we were away from the Base Camp trail, things were much quieter. It’s definitely a difficult situation for the region in terms of the environmental impact and we know that there are various attempts to minimise and mitigate that impact. It’s beholden on everyone who travels there to do so with respect and to minimise their own impact, and obviously the behaviour of tour operators can have a huge effect. On the flip side, the trekking and climbing industry is a huge earner for the country, in terms of taxes and fees at government level, for individual trekking agencies, and for the local economy with guesthouse owners, etc. Increased awareness of detrimental behaviour is a good thing and hopefully that can help push positive change 🙂

Hi Kim, I really appreciate your clear and honest answer, thanks a lot! (I'm late, it slipped my mind. ☺️) It is such a renarkable and special region, I really hope they will find long term durable solutions that safeguard the environment and the welfare of the local people as well. It would be great if the government could introduce an approach in which regulation, supervision and local trekking agencies would be integrated.

Glad you're enjoying the videos! Yeah, we did the Langtang and Gosainkunda trek immediately before the Everest Three Passes, but it's taken us a few months to edit the videos and write up all the guides! Langtang was our 'warm up' for the Everest region, but it ended up feeling like a pretty big trek in itself! Have you trekked in Nepal before?

Well to be honest, I was born in one of those himalays of Nepal, not so popular trekking amongst foreigner, but did my school, and high school there. So I had to trek everyday till I got 17Y/o. roughly 45min down to valley for schools and 1.25hrs uphill after school. Mountains and Himalayas are my home town, haven't been able to go back home for couple of years. But thanks to you guys, making me feel home through your videos. Appreciate it. Stay safe wherever you wonderful souls are out there.@@GoingTheWholeHogg

Thanks so much, guys! A fantastic and honest portrayal of this mega trek! No doubt a great experience, but I bet you were glad when it was over! Some questions. How would you rate it compared with the other treks you did? How valuable/necessary is it to have guide and porter for this trek? Is it better to do a warm-up/fitness trek before this one? I think you did it in April/May - guessing it would be less snowy but busier in October/November? Your written guide looks really good, btw - thanks for putting in so much hard work! 😊
@GoingTheWholeHogg
@GoingTheWholeHogg 6 месяцев назад
Hey, thank you! Thanks for watching and for getting in touch with some great questions as usual. It was a great experience and I think there’s always that little bit of being glad when it’s over, but definitely this time with such a long trek and also a long time at high altitude and in the snow. Really memorable though, and a great variety of landscapes across the three passes and throughout the trek. We would rate it highly compared to others. It’s up there with the best in Nepal we would say. The scenery is spectacular and the physical challenge is significant. It can be a little crowded when on the same route as the Everest Base Camp Trek but when you’re away from that it feels much much less busy. In terms of a guide and porter, it’s really up to the individual. Unlike in other regions, it’s not currently mandatory to have a guide in the Khumbu. Without getting into too much detail, if you’re an experienced high altitude trekker who’s used to carrying a good sized pack (15kg or more) for 2-3 weeks, then you’re probably fine without a guide and porter… the route is not really difficult to follow, especially with the GPX track on a mapping app. If you’re not experienced at high altitude, then a guide at least is a good idea, for safety if nothing else, and probably a porter too if you’re not used to carrying a heavy pack, although if you’re physically strong then this may be less of an issue. All that aside, having a guide removes a lot of the hassle from finding a guesthouse and such like, and a good guide can provide valuable insight throughout the trek. We’ve discussed it at length in our written guide 🙂 A warm up is a good idea, for fitness but also for acclimatisation. We trekked the Langtang Valley and to Gosainkunda before this and that was ideal. Good physical prep and also many days spent above 4000 metres. As we only spent a few days back in Kathmandu, it meant that we only had to spend one night in Namche Bazaar (standard is two) as we were already well acclimatised. Yep, we started April 11th I think. It’s our understanding that so much snow at that time isn’t so common but with current climate uncertainty it’s anybody’s guess. Definitely less snowy in October/November and busier as that’s the peak season, with spring being the next most favourable. Glad you like the written guides… a lot of work but we feel it’s valuable and we do appreciate getting good feedback about them. We’re working on a talking/guide video at the moment in which we cover a lot about both the Everest Base Camp and Three Passes treks, so hopefully that’ll be helpful too for anyone planning to do those. Thanks again! 😃

@@GoingTheWholeHogg Thanks very much for your (very helpful) replies. As I understand it from Facebook Nepal Trekking groups, no where do you need to take a guide, because even if it's officially required it's not actually enforced (though some Guides will make out that it is required by law - for obvious reasons!) But yes, I can see that using a guide from a reputable company makes everything go smoothly/hassle-free.
@GoingTheWholeHogg
@GoingTheWholeHogg 6 месяцев назад
@nigg2811 no bother at all. Part of the problem in other regions is that trekkers are required to get the TIMS card, and the new requirement made it that only government registered trekking agencies could obtain it, whereas in the past trekkers could just get it themselves. In the Khumbu region they have their own system and don’t use TIMS so it’s no problem. For everywhere else there is often a disconnect between the official requirement and what’s being enforced locally, but this obviously creates a lot of uncertainty for people and it’s far from ideal. Hopefully sensible heads will prevail in the end. Ultimately, those who wish a guide should take a guide, and those who don’t, shouldn’t have to (restricted areas aside).
@nigg2811
@nigg2811 6 месяцев назад
I've heard of TIMS and people are pretty confused on FB about the options regarding trekking alone. But of course this is Nepal and it's always pretty chaotic! That in itself is a reason to use a dependable trekking agency to take care of everything. @@GoingTheWholeHogg
