While visiting extended family in Florida, I decided to spend a day exploring the Everglades area on my kayak. I wasn't able to spend nearly enough time here before a cold front blew in and the temps plummeted, but the fishing wasn't half bad considering this was my first time in the Glades. I ended up with three different species in the boat on my TFO Mangrove 10wt fly rod and Lamson Liquid Reel. It certainly won't be my last time here, as the fishery and scenery are both incredible. Also, be sure to check out my page for other fly fishing topics as well as some of the conservation groups in Florida, such as Captains for Clean Water.

There's no absolutes, but when you find the small to medium tarpon in those creeks, you don't need to cast to the mangroves. You can put the fly right down the middle, which allows you to cover a bit more water. Enjoyable vid!

Yeah, I figured that out about halfway into the trip. It definitely saved some time. Thanks for watching!

You know what’s funny is I used to run the exact same setup as you! TFO Clouser 10wt and Lamson liquid 9-10.

Ironically the TFO 10wt Mangrove was my backup rod, glad I had it with me though. I'll probably end up getting a 8wt version of it at some point this year. Thanks for subscribing!

@@halfmoonflyfishing No problem! We have good taste lol. I was looking at a mangrove coast 8 weight as well for medium size application but I’m liking Scott Wave too.

@@timefliesFL I don’t know much about Scott’s but I’ve heard they’re good rods

The kayak you’re using looks to be quite stable. Can you tell us about it? Brand, length, weight, pros & cons. I’m searching out a good one to use here in some of our Northern CAL waters. Thanks!

It’s actually an old Perception Striker 11.5, not sure about the width but it is a “tri hull,” which is why it looks so stable. Great to fly fish from but doesn’t paddle quite as well as a typical kayak. Stand up paddle boards are a great option too, if I could do it again I probably would have bought one of those instead.

Love it man. Can I ask where you mean by 'Southwest' please? I hope to travel to Florida for the first time and have to give this a go.. Thanks

Everglades is in the Southwest part of Florida. There’s a lot of online resources that can point you in the right direction, but any body of water in the area seems like it holds a lot of diversity in fish species. Try checking out Ole Florida Fly Shop, they have some good information on there. Hope this helps!

@@halfmoonflyfishing Thanks man. Apologies, yes, I am aware that the everglades are in the south and southwest of Florida but I was actually probing for a more precise info on exactly what body of water(s) on where to focus some attention on tbh; even the body of waters where you were fishing exactly, or where it might be close to? Hope you don't mind me asking, no problem if you don't wish to be more specific.. Its just that I'd be coming a long way (UK) and really need some precise locations and advice on what waters are particularly good to fish.. thanks again
@halfmoonflyfishing
@halfmoonflyfishing Год назад
@@chuckarooful if you are coming from the UK I am the last person to ask for advice unfortunately. I have very limited experience fly fishing in saltwater. Your best best is to hire a guide to show you around and put you on fish. Just my opinion, you can do it yourself but chances are you won’t find what your looking for.
@chuckarooful
@chuckarooful Год назад
@@halfmoonflyfishing No problem buddy. No worries. We will hire guides for sure but we can't afford to hire guides every day of our trip, they are way too expensive for us unfortunately, that's why we are looking for some DIY options like kayaking the way you are doing this video..We just need some ideas of where to try, we have no idea where, the place in the video looks perfect.. 👍
@halfmoonflyfishing
@halfmoonflyfishing Год назад
@@chuckarooful Completely understandable. I won't give specifics, but definitely look for larger canal systems with a lot of current. Google Earth is how I found mine. The more water moving from the tides usually means better fishing (saltwater at least).

What do you suggest for a complete beginner going for snakehead bass and peacock bass in Florida. Would it be an 8 weight or what I’m a little lost with all of this.
@halfmoonflyfishing
@halfmoonflyfishing Год назад
Yeah man, start with an eight weight. Good all around rod for fresh/saltwater species. As far as specific brands, I like lamson’s reels for freshwater and TFO rods. However, I would highly suggest using Facebook marketplace if you can’t drop a ton of money on a set up, there’s a lot of good pre-used rod/reel combos that guys don’t use anymore or upgraded to something else. I imagine poppers and streamers would work well for all three of those species. Make sure to do some research as well, there’s a lot of guys in Florida going after freshwater stuff on fly rods. Fly shops down there are a good resource. Hope that helps!
@plankisdead8356
@plankisdead8356 Год назад
I use a 6wt for the species you listed but an 8wt will allow you to go after some bigger species as well and you can find an affordable rod and reel outfit at bass pro
@halfmoonflyfishing
@halfmoonflyfishing Год назад
I would also advise against getting a plastic reel. Some of the combo 'kits' you find at Cabela or Bass Pro have plastic reels that are absolute trash, like the Reddington Crosswater or Orvis Encounter kits. Look for one that has a metal reel.

@@plankisdead8356 5wt for snakeheads, peas and ditch tarpon/snook be plenty…8wt fly rod is overkill you can catch everything he’s catching in this video on a 5wt

What fly line do u use? And weight
@halfmoonflyfishing

This was mostly on a 10wt TFO with 8wt line. I didn’t have a 10wt reel at the time so I was just making it work. The 8wt rod broke the previous day
