Caught a monster snook on a fly at the beach yesterday. Epic day of fishing. Bait and predators everywhere. I also put on mask and snorkel for some underwater footage of the glass minnow schools and snook. Skip ahead if you just want to see the fish. Great fly 'eat' at time 5:03. Big snook landed at time 9:02.

Great video! Thanks! I just recently caught my first beach snook on fly. This was one of the videos I watched before going on the trip to the west coast. The bait schools I experienced were no where as thick as the bait in your video. Beach snook are pretty finicky as I learned , alot of missed shots. The ones that did eat, made it all worthwhile.

Congrats! Sometimes smaller bait schools produce better. Snook are notoriously tricky in general. Good luck going forward. Thanks for the comment.

I enjoyed the fly fishing video. I tried to see the fly and think I know the pattern. As a fly fishing addict I am always interested in the particulars: weight of rod combo, leader specs, fly info (pattern/hook size, etc.). I've tied a similar pattern and did a couple more after seeing the video. I'm sure others may have already asked. I'll look at the other comments after my input. I enjoyed the video to a point that I sent the link to my son and grandson (16) in Ft. Myers. Grandson just received a 9 weight outfit that I put together for him. I grew up south of you in Wilton Manors/Ft. Lauderdale and on Big Pine Key. I moved back to Crystal River area in FL after a military career and a few positions after retirement, elsewhere. I fished for Snook as a teen in the late 50's and early 60's before Uncle Sam said they couldn't live without me. Wife and I continue to fish snook, redfish, and trout here. I'll subscribe to your page, post more Fly fishing videos...I'll enjoy them.

Beautiful footage and fish! I’m trying to get into saltwater fly fishing, what techniques are you using to catch these fish? Are you letting it drift or stripping it straight back? Also do you recommend going on a high or low tide?
@straightouttajupiter
@straightouttajupiter Год назад
Hey thanks for the comment. As you can probably tell from the video and comments, I'm no fly expert so take what I say in context. Stripping methods of course vary depending on the fish feeding behavior at the time. Try different techniques, but ALWAYS incorporate a pause somewhere. And tide can vary so Know your beach as I say. Look for tides that create Eddie's, rips etc - fishy looking spots. If you can go several days in a row to the same spot you'll find a pattern. Good luck.

Its a whole other "art form" But with some practice you'll get very good at it. One day it will hit you: "Wow, I've got this!" and you will have transcended the rookie phase for good. With that budget, you should be able to get very good gear, most important is the rod and line. Don't cheap out and your experience will be much more pleasant.

The law of averages.... "if you cast enough times, you'll eventually get one." ;) I recommend investing in good fly casting and fly fishing lessons to increase those odds, as well as some better equipment. My recommendation on a good middle of the road budget equipment would be a TFO Axiom II-X 8wt rod, a 3-Tand TX-80 reel (saltwater bullet proof), about 200yrds of really good 20lb backing and Rio's Elite Flats Pro 8wt floating fly line with the 6ft clear intermediate sink tip. Do not skimp out on high quality fly line. Also use all fluorocarbon leader, tippet and bite leader material. I recommend 4' of 40lb, 2' of 30lb, 18" of 20lb, for your butt section. 2' of 15lb for the tippet and 12' of 30lb for the bite leader. Also scale down your hook size to #2 for bigger snook and #4 for dinks. This comes from 3 decades of beach snookin on fly. ;)

Nice footage. Nice Fish! Change your fly. Have a 4 flight rotation set up before you start. Do not spend more than 10 minutes Not Catching fish, with the same color fly! You never set the hook. Use butt of the rod, not tip, to fight strong fish. You could not pull the fly line from between tip of my fingers with the tip of your rod. The butt you can pull me down! You will break your rod pulling on the butt with your left hand, an Expensive lesson! Just so friendly advice! - Peace

Thanks for understanding. Snook mostly feed low in the water column or on the bottom so definitely sinking or intermediate line. I always use fluorocarbon leader. Watch for the bait and match the size. In the winter you never know what kind of bait will be around so be prepared with different size flies. I think you can do fine with just clousers and baitfish flies like Enrico puglisi. I don't think color matters. Just size
