Best scene in Tangled: Before the lanterns, it goes to Rapunzel's parents. Silent. Grief stricken. The father tears up, and its the mother that comforts him. It's typically the other way around. Any man who's been taught all his life to never cry probably lost it at that point. I know I did.

One of the best things that I found about Rapunzel and Eugene’s romance was that she intiates most of the ‘romantic’ ideas. SHE ALWAYS PULLS HIM IN FOR THE KISS

I still can’t believe how well Tangled has aged.

The thing about Tangled that I see as truly exceptional is how accurately and frighteningly it portrays gaslighting and manipulative, abusive familial relationships.

When Penelope screams when Ralph actually breaks her cart is one of the most rawest screams I've ever heard. I felt that to my core. And most of all, I relate. I've also had something very precious to me broken before my very eyes.

Just to clarify: Elsa USED TO be able to control her powers. The first few minutes of the first movie shows that. However, when she accidentally hurt Anna, that control went out of the window because she started being so scared of it and was in conflict with it growing up.

I 100% agree with your opinions on the "romance doesn't make a female character weaker". The biggest example is, apart from Rapunzel, that futuristic shooter girl in Wreck it Ralph who married Felix.

Tangled was my FAVORITE movie as a child, I would constantly rewatch it. The Mother Knows Best song is a display of just how toxic Mother Gothel is to Rapunzel and blatantly shows clear signs of gaslighting, which is perfect to show to children at an early age so they won't let themselves get gaslighted. The romance between Rapunzel and Flynn was perfectly shown in the movie as "this doesn't define me as a person, but instead, enhances me and my experiences" which is so crucial to show young girls. As girls grow up, they're shown how important romance is going to be in their lives by society: "you need to get married," "you need to have kids," "you have to fall in love." Explaining to young girls what a healthy romance and a healthy partner is, and what a healthy parent looks like (Gothel compared to Rapunzel's real parents) is what makes this movie my favorite Disney movie. I really hope you make a review on this movie, because it means so much to me and to many young girls. A side note: romance isn't the most important thing in a woman's life, and it doesn't need to exist in their lives in order to be happy. Some women are perfectly happy being single and never having to worry about being intimate with someone. Aro and ace people are valid, while they may not relate to the romance aspect of the movie, they can pick up the other important life lessons in the movie!

I actually can't wait until he does a ranking for the straight to DVD/VHS Disney Sequels. I feel like it's gonna be hilarious.

I honestly like Big Hero 6. Yeah I understand people’s complaints about the villain but the scene where Hiro ends up leaving Baymax got me pretty emotional

I'd argue that Mother Knows best is a Top Tier Disney Villains song. It shows how manipulative and dark Gothel is as a villain and how she traps Rapunzel in her tower in a much more emotional way. The fact that Rapunzel had no idea Gothel kidnapped her is somehow darker than what happened with Snow White and Cinderella, who were aware their Stepmothers were evil.

The reindeer guy and Christophe had more chemistry in that one scene than him and Anna in the entire 2 movies. Don’t try and fight me you know I’m right

I got to say ‘mother knows best’ gets about a thousand times creepier if you know someone like gothel.

For me... I feel Tangled was easily the best of these. The way its story builds Rapunzel and Eugene without the instant love thing really works. It shows both as they slowly build a bond, it has both having big moments where they are the hero of a sort. Its animal characters are the best by a long long mile. The story between Mother Gothel and Rapunzel really goes into an area entertainment rarely trends. Gothel is easily one of the most evil charcters... she straight ganks Eugene in the back. Her real parents never say a word the whole movie and yet their emotions as parents of a lost child are PERFECTLY portrayed. Its really a beautiful movie.

It’s actually halarious how Schaf notices the character assassination in Ralph Breaks The Internet but doesn’t in Toy Story 4 when it’s so blantantly obvious. I’m never forgiving you for that Schaf.

Tangled is my personal favourite Disney movie of the 2010s. Who would think that the decade could peak at its very beginning?

I still love Zootopia, due to how creative the world feels. I didn't exactly pay attention to the real world race allegory, I just enjoyed the story, character's, and world they live in.

I will never understand why Tangled didn't get a Best Animated Feature Film nomination.

I 100% agree with what James said about Removing romances because it might make the female characters look weak. Just because you’re in love that doesn’t mean you’re gonna depend on your significant other for the rest of your life.

The thing I love most about moana that he hadn't mentioned was how Disney actually did research into Polynesian culture and not just focus on one country like Hawaii like lilo and stitch but pulling from a variety of pacific islands and that there's an actor/actress representing diff pacific islands dwayne:samoa, temuera and jemaine:both modern nz and maori culture and also auli'i being Hawaiian. I love how Disney is using actors of the actual ethnicity they're animating but also not being overly abnoxious about representing a culture and still having a story. As a Polynesian myself I loved seeing this in moana.

In I See the Light, Eugene brushes Rapunzel's hair out of her eyes before they're leaning in to kiss. It visually shows that he's not wanting her because of her hair, but because of who she is.

There's a lot in Tangled that you didn't pick up on! You talk about how well they portray Moana's struggle with imposter syndrome and her greatest strength being her empathy, and you totally overlooked the same mechanisms at work in Tangled. In "mother knows best", they're setting up a super realistic example of real abusive, gaslighting behaviour. You read this as "slow and clunky" and got close with the idea that the tone is unusual, but you completely missed the mark. In the scene where Rapunzel is flipping back and forth between ecstatic and anxious, that's very true to life for victims in her situation. Not only is the romance one of the most captivating that Disney has pulled off -- as you describe -- but the entire plot of Rapunzel's mother being emotionally manipulative is super well done and true to life. Also, and this is my bias talking, it's incredibly validating as a kid to see an evil family member, to recognise abusive behaviour in media and know you're not imagining it, which is of course what the gaslighter tries so hard to convince you. It was really life-changing for a lot of people, and I know myself it's been a comfort film since the day I first saw it. Wreck it Ralph is good but depicting an abusive relationship between a parent and a child? That's groundbreaking. For some, it really is a revolutionary moment in film history and just wanted to show you how wrong you are when you describe it as "nothing groundbreaking". There's a great video by CinemaTherapy about the 11 signs of gaslighting in this film that explains it really well, if you wanna check that out.

The original A.A Milne’s Winnie the Pooh is actually quite emotional. You go on the journey of Tiger’s mental health, Eeyore’s depression and how he finds positivity in seeing the simple things in life, Piglet’s insecurities about friendships, Pooh’s insecurities as a whole that are pretty similar to insecurities we would have as children (loneliness, mental isolation, friendship problems, obsession towards unhealthy things) but most of all it’s Christopher Robin which is the really sad story here. We realise at the end that he made up a world in his mind to hide away from the fact he doesn’t want to grow up, see his family separate, and go to boarding school separated from his family. We realise that in the end- he can’t be a child forever, he has to let his friendships with Pooh and the gang go- but that the memories live on. That’s what makes Winnie the Pooh a timeless classic. You realise as you age that the characters Christopher Robin makes up are all mini personas of his insecurities and that it’s a tale about growing up while tackling the struggles of that crucial part of life. To me- the story is one of the most moving in child literature history

In big hero 6, I actually really like Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Gogo, and Fred (I even remember all their names). They’re all just very likable. Also, to counter the only thing you said in this video I don’t agree with: Wasabi is a clean freak, Gogo is a rebel who likes motorcycles and driving, Honey Lemon is very bouncy and charming, and Fred is just vibing. There. Those are their personality traits.

This has cemented it. Schaff needs to rank the pre-Renaissance Disney animated films now

Fun Fact: Zachary Levi took the role of Eugene mainly of hopes to voice him again in a Kingdom Hearts game. He eventually did.

I love how little every time Schaffrillas says “can you even name ___ from this movie?” I always can. The big hero 6 girls names are honey lemon and gogo and frozen heart was one of my favorite songs in frozen

Wreck it Ralph made me cry twice. One was of course where you mentioned, but the beginning also got me. I related too hard when Ralph was going through his "All I want to do is fit in but they won't make room because of something I can't control"

I feel _utterly_ betrayed that he dedicated a whole segment to Moana without talking about Tamatoa at least once!

Speaking of Tangled being the 50th Disney animated movie, Encanto is the 60th and turned out better than most other Disney movies in the 2010's, so I guess the big milestone movies work out to be great

I think Professor Callaghan was supposed to be showing how irrational people can get when hurt immensely by grief. I watched Big Hero 6 first when I was still grieving my Uncle and I related to it really hard, haha.

best part of BH-6 is the exquisite dialogue. " What would mom and dad say?" "I don't know. They're gone. They died when I was three, remember?" why the fuck would a sibling ever have to remind another sibling about the death of their parents?

Moana was the movie that broke me, when her grandmother passed and was reborn as a manga ray, that reminded me of my grandmother and when she passed and her love for animals and her idea of never being gone and just being in a different form. It was such an experience.

The worst part of Moana is how at the end, instead of putting a flat rock on that one tower, she puts a conch shell. She isn’t taking into account how inconvenient that will be for the next ruler’s rock placement

I have to disagree with tangled. For people like myself who suffer abusive narcissistic parents it's a heavy hitter and a deeply impactful film

13:01 It's been probably six or seven years since I've seen Frozen or heard this song, so when you said this I immediately attempted singing it and I literally knew every line. My siblings and I used to recite the entire script of Frozen for fun

One thing that stuck out to me about Frozen 2 above all else was actually that Olaf scene where he realized that he was upset. He realized that he isn't just a one-dimensional character meant solely to be cheerful. He realized he had a right to express negative emotion. When your target audience is a demographic who is expected to be quiet and never angry, something like that is powerful. It's something kids need to see, and I'm so glad it got included. (Plus, anger in general is so demonized.)

Did anyone else felt old when seeing that Encanto was the 60th animated feature film and remembering seeing the same thing with Tangled but being the 50th? Like, dude, that hit me hard

Talking about Big Hero 6 and not mentioning Aunt Cass is a crime. Everyone who watched the movie remember her name. Hell, even those that didn't watch the movie remember her name.

I haven't seen Big Hero 6 in years but I still remember their names are Gogo, Honey Lemon, Wasabi, and Fred.

One thing that I absolutely ADORE about Zootopia is that all of the characters had some form of significance to the plot. There isn’t any pointless comic relief characters or any character that could have been erased from the movie. That is a hard feat to pull off for mainstream animated movies nowadays.

Gotta say, I agree with pretty much everything here but Moana didn't have the same impact the first few times I watched it. The film didn't stick around in my mind as much as Tangled or Wreck It Ralph. I'll have to watch it again with a fresh perspective.

What makes Calhoun an even worse villain is his daughter willingly agreed to be a part of the teleportation experiment regardless of how dangerous it was. If anything, he’s mad at her for her decision than anything. I haven’t watched Big Hero 6 in forever, so idk if they ever address it, but if they didn’t it would’ve been nice if the characters brought that up and just immediately demolish his motivation.

For me personally Zootopia is my favorite Disney animated film of this decade for several reasons. Firstly, it has a unique and original storyline that explores themes of prejudice and discrimination in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Additionally, the animation is visually stunning, with a wide variety of detailed and imaginative settings and characters. The voice acting is also excellent, with memorable performances from the lead actors. Additionally, it's also a movie that appeals to both children and adults, with jokes and references that can be enjoyed by both. Like actually, the references are not a takeaway here. And the jokes are funny. Some people say it's way too simplistic, I don't think there's much shame in films being simplistic. There are some frank elements here which are unbelievable but it's a Disney movie come on. I get the twist's predictable but at least it's not Callaghan.

I used to feel the same way about Mother Knows Best until I talked to women who had abusive mothers who said it was perfectly written for a narcissist mom

So from what I can gather of Big Hero 6, I can already think of two villains who are basically Callaghan but better: Lusamine from Pokemon Sun and Moon, president of the Aether Foundation, and Max Profitt Haltmann from Kirby Planet Robobot, president of Haltmann Works. Both had a similar occurrence happen, but dealt with it in more believable ways. Lusamine lost her husband Mohn to Ultra Space, while Haltmann "lost" his daughter Susie to Another Dimension. Neither explicitly state it, but you can learn through context that these are the real motivations for what they do. Lusamine refused to give up, pouring all her extra funds from Aether into researching Ultra Space in order to make a wormhole to reach it, becoming so obsessed with what she lost that she hurt the loved ones she still had and willingly became parasitized by Nihilego due to its corruptive psychic influence on her mind. Haltmann, meanwhile, presumed her dead like Callaghan, but still sought to find another way to bring her back, seeking to build a new Galactic Nova, known as Star Dream, to grant his wish of reviving her. He ended up so maddened by his own experiments with the incomplete Star Dream that he couldn't even recognize Susie was still alive and had returned to him years later. Both made efforts to bring their loved one back, which gave depth to their actions. Callaghan abandoned that driving force when he very well could've used the portal to at least search for her remains if nothing else, blinded to the harm he caused the people who cared about him if it meant any chance of getting her back. But as it stands, he really had no reason to use it in the first place.

You put into words exactly on how I feel Disney has been approaching romance...as in, they basically ignore it now because they are afraid of criticism. But romance doesn't make a character weak or shallow if they have other emotions, goals, and characteristics. I miss having their characters having some romance. I feel Tangled was the last to do it right. Frozen's felt tacked on snd they pretty much took it out of all the newer films.

i feel like a big part of why Moana is such an amazing protagonist is just the girl who voices her, Auli'i is probably one of the best casting decisions that Disney has ever made, she fits Moana so incredibly well. I've watched those videos that compare the voices of the princesses through different languages, and Moana is the ONLY one where I consistently see people rank the English voice as the #1 voice

The romance in tangled is AMAZING! They didn’t just randomly through it in at the end for convenience. They truly built something, it was and always will be amazing.

Honestly, I would place Dwayne Johnson’s performance as Maui just below Robin Williams’ performance of Genie as Disney’s greatest larger-than-life characters. He brought so much character and charisma to the movie.

i sincerely believe that the scene in tangled where rapunzel saves eugene is one of the most beautiful scenes from the decade of disney movies.

Big hero 6 could have been so SO good. It had a great set of main characters, an emotional heartbreaking hero origin story, a cool city that could have been explored more, it encourages young people to explore STEM programs and make cool things, it shows a beautiful connection of two brothers, has a cute found family dynamic, and deals with the heavy topic of grief. I think if it wasn't for it's lackluster villain and motives, it could have been an excellent movie, with a team of heroes that could have grown to be fan favorites. But it falls flat, and that's so sad to see

In the other nominated movies along with Big Hero 6, my dad was animation director and animator for song of the sea. Tomm and Paul are really cool guys too.

Father of 9 girls here. My 2 yr old has been on a frozen, frozen2, Moana, and Tangled binge lately. Love em all but Tangled takes the top for this dad. Very interesting the whole movie and terrific music. My only question- how did Eugene and Maximus fall like 600 feet with no damage?? 😂 That part always gets me

The ranking for Big Hero 6 is certainly understandable, but for some reason it's still one of my favorite Disney movies. Callaghan was a very bad villain, but I love the characters (especially Baymax) and the suits Hiro made for them to match the branches of science they studied, although they do kinda carry the movie. I understand it has a lot of flaws and why it was ranked so low, but in terms of enjoyment it's definitely a solid 8/10 for me.

As great as Moana was, Tangled takes the top for me, for the reasons you’ve mentioned and because I seriously love Mother Gothel as a villain, because I dealt with an emotionally abusive mother like that (who’s in jail now) so I just felt myself connecting with Rapunzel more and almost yelling out “Girl get tf out of there” when she thought Gothel was a good parent

I do think zootopia is a better commentary on implicit bias as a concept rather than race relations. While the two are very related and tied to one another I just don’t think zootopia’s messaging when applied to racism makes much sense, but when applied to implicit bias it hits the nail on the head constantly.

I'd actually get into like, a heated debate about Frozen Heart being a bad song. It's the only song in the two movies that actually makes sense to be diegetic, and paints an idea of ice as this strange, mythically powerful thing - it's not just she has ice magic, it's the people of Earendel *actively fear ice magic*. Also it feels like something that would've been in the original story where Else was a ruthless queen villain and that's pretty cool.
