let me know if i got anything wrong! sorry again for not including studios like pierrot, OLM, production I.G, PA Works, JC Staff, David production, etc.
Fr bro, especially A1 pictues. But in recent years they've been much better but t the cost of production speed. Like many episodes of 86 Eighty six were delayed but the quality was top tier as always
@@TRAKOTI-07I hate how otakus always complain about anime takes "a lot of time" to produce, but they cant even draw a single frame even if you give them all the time in the world
Yeah, hearing about that was one of the most shocking things ever for me. Even though you hear about war and stuff all the time. Maybe it's the extreme contrast between what I associate with the studio and the horrible nature of the crime. Still can't believe that happened to this day...
Ghibli backgrounds actually uses gouache! Which is a medium that sits between watercolour and acrylic, which creates that soft watercolour feel but the opacity of acrylic paints
I saw a really interesting RU-vid video by an artist (his name is Alpay Efe) and it said that Ghibli specifically uses something called Poster Paint by the brand called Nicker! It seems to be really similar to gouache but it dries even faster I think. Definitely recommend the video if you’re interested 😊
its insane when u realize its not that rare in that industry. until the last 3 years the author of one piece was working 19 hours a day 40 weeks a year too
Also, it's important to note that since KyoAni is based in Kyoto unlike most of the other studios which are mostly based on Tokyo, the business would have different laws than the ones in Tokyo
@@KsiOlajigglyOlatittiesDiabetes I feel your pain with that facepalm, and if more people exist that need to point out that Kyoto Animation is based on Kyoto, the world is doomed
They were not producing anything new, they basically where an IP holder at this point (also they took money from Hideaki Anno so I feel no sympathy for them)
@@fangbozhu7379not gonna lie I hope Khara manages to get ahold of Gainax’s old video game IPs too. Imagine a new Princess Maker title with Studio Khara as the lead artists
Ngl, WIT Studio having to work on Attack on Titan as their very first project kinda made me laugh, but it was also the reason for their growth and popularity in the anime industry.
I feel really sorry That wit studio has to go the whole mess with attack on titan glad that wit studio got rid of this damn overhyped series and focus on things that they can chill and have fun like spy family or next season the deer girl shikanoko
@@user-mg7wh8zq6v i just heard that after season 1 wit studio just want to abonded it but because aot got riddiculisly popular they were force to continue
R.I.P. Studio Gainax. It’s crazy that their company went bankrupt a few weeks ago - they deserved a better fate, especially with the legendary things they made.
@@cathyouyang9521 since mid-2010's, Gainax was just an empty shell, all key persons had leaved to found Khara and Trigger, its main businees was hogging IP's rights. they were even convicted for not paying royalties to Hideaki Anno for Evangelion.
@@kakonthebed Mappa is known for their horrible work environment and Kyo Ani is widely regarded as the best work place within the industry. That's why I knew what he was about to mention before the vid even started.
Kinda underselling Trigger in how they seem to be the gateway between the Japanese and North American animation industry. The amount of collaborations with free reign Trigger gets to do is insane, they are perhaps the west’s most trusted studio.
Yeah and didn't comment at all about their 3D work, while the first episode of Kill la Kill has the most 2d looking 3d animation sequence in probably all of animation history lmao Trigger's really the best studio out there, kinda sad he didn't talk about all their more creative animes like Sex and Violence with Machspeed, Ninja Slayer or Space Patrol Luluco....
Toei especially One Piece Production right now: - Good scheduling - Good working condition - Good treatment for animators - Highest paid for animators - Egghead arc is the most consistent one piece arc adaptation in terms of quality.
Fr. Many freelancer are happy and fun join One Piece production. Few of them are debutant in industry. One of the best working condition right now. Even Vincent Chansard admit that! 👏

I just love that Toei fans/OP fans are treating the directors, animators, and VA as celebrities. Even tho the animation was consistent and fluid these days, they're having fun animating it and putting random easter eggs lol. Directors and animators are like "fck it, we do what we want to do" lmao
toei animators are so free, that they just add some little easter eggs on some episodes. In Zoro Vs. King, they hid 2 easter eggs. An Among Us in an impact frame (surprisingly) and a really hidden arabic sentence translated to "I like Macaroni"
When kid and law beat big mom there was an impact frame with “smokin on that big mom pack” written in English, I’m not even kidding shit was hilarious 😭
It's the dark side of the anime industry that we turn a blind eye to because of our insatiable appetite for "more more more." It HAS to be understood by every anime fan, that the only way for these working conditions to get better is for us to change as consumers and demand it. We need LESS anime, and better conditions for the animators and we won't support an anime that is made with sweatshop labor. Until we do that as consumers, there's no reason for the industry to change.
@@ktvindicare I think this anime output is fine as long as the organization behind teams is more structured. Only have this team work on this anime, give them a break once it's finished, etc. And that can be achieved through training programs, outsourcing animators from other countries, and giving more benefits for employees.
@@ktvindicareWhile that's definitely true, the anime industry in Japan isn't the only case. There are a lot, and I mean A LOT of industries who exploit their workers like that. So Japan as a whole would have to change stuff like laws and workers rights. And yeah we consumers could have influence over it, unfortunately we overseas people aren't the main market for anime in this case. Meaning even if we consumers overseas boycott the anime, if the consumers in Japan don't do it and like the anime instead, it's unlikely that the studios would change their policies much or if they even would. Btw no sources of the claims I did, it's just stuff I read in the past so I'm not sure how true it is nowadays
Pierrot literally created Naruto series, Bleach, tybw part 2, tokyo ghoul and Boruto (yes i know animation is terrible sometimes but it worth mentioning because these are insanely iconic)
Kind of a major oversight not to talk about the KyoAni arson attack. 33 people were killed and a number of key staff members left the studio not long after, presumably as a result of dealing with trauma. Took them a while to get back on their feet.
idk. i feel like it's good to not always mention the arson whenever someone brings up Kyoto Animation. i prefer to talk about the animated projects they produce
That event was out of their control. This person only covered anime studios in the context of what they’ve done, not what’s happened to them. He’s not legally required to mention that a tragedy happened to an otherwise brilliant anime studio
@@jasonmp85that's like talking about the history of new York and skipping 2001 altogether Because "who would want to remember that?" He always showed the most popular and influental animes of each studio, so it is beyond me how he could forget to name Gintama for Sunrise. It's arguably one giant cornerstone for them.

I know! All the kanji used in those fights look really cool and fit since everyone's based on authors. They also made Noragami, Soul Eater, and Case Study of Vanitas. So, basically most of my favorite series.
Huge Gundam and Sunrise fan here. Just a note, Bandai Namco Filmworks still uses the name “Sunrise” as their anime studio brand name, they’re still credited for all of their productions. The Bandai Namco Filmworks name change was largely because Bandai merged Bandai Namco Arts(distribution)and Bandai Namco Rights Marketing(Licensing) with Sunrise. What about Kinema Citrus? One of my favorite studios that’s made anime such as “Made in Abyss” and “Barakamon”. They are definitely a smaller studio, but you almost always see them in the credits of other anime productions because of the one big thing they SHINE at, backgrounds. Kinema Citrus is a master at making the background look alive, just like Ghibli does, if not better. Their craft pulls the viewers into the world and makes them feel as if they’re right in front of the characters. It’s so detailed and colorful that no other studio can compete. Just look at the world of Made in Abyss. The environment is so beautifully complex, and yet Kinema Citrus animates it all perfectly without batting an eye.
There's a bunch of studios missing so the title of this video is a lie. TMS (the other really old animation studio that made classic anime like Lupin III. It's also where Miyazaki got his start), Brain's Base (which was made from TMS and made its own sub studio Shuka), Doga Kobo.... I could keep going
Made in Abyss' gorgeous backgrounds is not something that should be directly attributed to Kinema Citrus, but to art director Osamu Masuyama and his company Inspired. That he was a Ghibli background artist says a lot
10:33 They are also known for the unfortunate Arson... which means you cry even harder because you realise that some of the people who made you feel these emotions aren't with us today
I agree, having binged it yesterday. Season one's animation is extremely rare because many veteran animators teamed up; even in the industry it was considered a special project. The animation for season 2 was actually very very well done, I just think a lot of anime watchers randomly decided they understood animation cause they watched one punch man and could thus make these claims even though season 2 opm is better than the vast majority of anime, even if it isn't cream of the crop(which I think it comes pretty close)
@@dummyspittinglamma6494 the ghosting was a problem but once it was removed I think the animation was quite nice. like, jjk season 2 also had a lot of ghosting but it was way better once removed. also, jjk still looked pretty good with ghosting, while opm fared worse from it.
I think my favorite studio overall might be KyoAni, mostly because of their beautiful animation paired up with adapting really good series like Haruhi, Clannad, Hyouka, HIbike Euphonium, Violet Evergarden etc. In terms of sheer visual appeal I think the best studio has to be Ufotable, I think their animations are eye candy that no other studio has been able to replicate thus far. I like both Fate and Demon Slayer, but I wish they would have more variety in what they make
check out the garden of sinners movie series ufotable did before fate and demon slayer for something different. amazing series from the same author of fate.

Mine would be mappa or kyoani, as well, Violet Evergarden is just great, overall the only anime I rate as 10/10. But also is great with animations, but the work quality and some sound tracks dont hit as hard
KyoAni clearly the gods of the industry. Everything they've made so far is really immersive and interesting and beautiful. Every anime studio in japan literally saying they want to be like KyoAni.
I love this! I think it’s a great guide for people getting into anime who are unfamiliar with the studios and want an overview of all the big names and what they’ve worked on. Hopefully you’re willing to make a part two covering the studios you missed this time around. Thank you for your work!
One thing that you forgot to mention, in 2019 a man set fire to KyoAni, I'm not gonna go very far into detail but I think there were 34 people killed in it
@@animesubway7433 The thing is, it highly impacted the studio, and key staff members both died and left due to the incident. It's commendable that the studio got back on its feet with incredibly good quality like always.
Mappa: my animator will overwork and paid less to increase my overall revenue while maintaining the anime quality Ufotable: HA, TAX SEASON CAN'T CATCH ME IF I RUN FAST ENOUGH!
Bones is my favorite by far! Bones made my favorite anime with some of the best animation I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a shame that my friends think Pierrot is the best.
Bungo Stray Dogs is probably my favorite anime. Tbh I thought Bones was kinda small compared to others but then the title popped up for Mob Psycho, MHA, and so many more
Very interesting how you mentioned the Tax Evasion for Ufotable, but you didn't mention the Kyoani fire or the Gainax controversy that caused their name to be scrubbed from Evangelion releases. Pretty big oversight to not mention these
@@mariozucchero6167 From what I read, it primarily revolved around Hideaki Anno's increasingly shaky relationship with GAINAX following EVANGELION's massive success, primarily in terms of the company's monetary management.
Kyoto Animation is my favorite because of how well they treat their staff, which leads to their series always looking so good with all the care their staff gives to the series
The only thing bothers me why some individual wanted to burn the studio down even we heard it's doing well to the employees? Most of this case were acting for revenge like they don't treat them fairly on their job so it's still a mystery for me
5:05 🎶🎶 My problem with Toei is that sometimes in the anime they make dirty some characters. Madhouse has amazing anime but it isn't the super overrated anime Friren for example Monster,Hellsing Ultimate and many other. Sunrise most anime are good. My problem with Gainax is that Evangelion was rushed and confusing in last episodes I am glad Khara made the rebuild movies. Also Gainax made a hidden gem anime called The Mystic Archieves of Dantalian. RIP Gainax I don't have to say something about Shaft,Kyoto and Ufotable,I like them especially Shaft. Bones once again is one of my favorite studios. Orange gets most of times critized for the 3D but no it deserves more apreciation and love.
Great video! To add to studio Shaft segment however, their working conditions are some of the worst in the industry if not THE worst. MAPPA has the connections to brute force their way through terrible conditions with sheer numbers. Shaft can't afford that, so they instead resort to blackmail and abuse to get their main animators to do more work. Hiroto Nagata (man who animated every good scene in every shaft show for the past 4 years) talked on twitter about the sheer level of abuse he's being put through currently, like having breakdowns and getting sensations of being choked in his sleep. It's horrendous.
He got some stuff totally wrong, the nagata situation didn't include blackmailing nor abuse (just speculations from ppl) + it involved one individual saying some not so nice things & not the entirety of the company @randompasserbyontheinterne9195
I think its comically funny that KyoAni, which does mainly slice of life, animates random-ass crazy good looking action scenes every now and then that are either on par with, or even sometimes better than, traditonal action titles. Nichijou, quite literally slice of life, has some of the hardest fucking scenes ever about the stupidest fucking shit. And I'm all for it 200%. Also, I love that I clicked on the vid for some slight ego feeding, for my opinion of KyoAni (thanks), but I love the industry slander, huge thanks
2:15 How tf did Castle in the Sky or Naussica and the Valley of the Wind or Princess Mononoke not get an Oscar 😭😭😭 Totally understandable for Spirited Away and The Boy and the Heron but Ghibli is a master at his craft
One reason is probably due to the fact that BAF wasn't a thing back when they released, and animation didn't and still don't typically get Oscars that often from what I know (correct me if I'm wrong)
A-1 is absolute powerhouse, they can make good rom-com , good action. Direct different styles of animation. They only lack the capability of producing long run animes.
Every A-1 Anime have decent quality. They never below my expectations when it comes to animating. Like honestly, whenever I see an anime adapted by A-1, I just know they gonna be in good hands compared to J.C staff.
@@shafwandito4724 No idea how A-1 always seems to make Adaptations that surpass the source material. Sword Art Online, horribly written as it is, is adapted masterfully as animation. Kaguya-sama took a great source material and turned it into a modern classic among rom-coms. Not KyoAni level of perfection, but somehow they always amaze me.
The One Piece remake and Dadadan are in good hands. Imagining a One Piece with Attack on Titan level action is awesome. Saru wouldn't have been my first pick for Dandadan honestly but Scott Pilgrim was great so I have faith

Hearing about the news of KyoAni's arson incident is so painful knowing that they're one of the best anime studios to work at. Kyoani is like a caring mother, while A1 and Mappa are the abusive fathers.
Would love to see a part two of the studios you werent able to cover here, or just a little smaller. Whitefox, JC STAFF, 8bit, and C2C to name a few :) anyway, amazing job!!!!
I'm glad you put the most amount of time into the working conditions of each studio as that is something most anime fans either don't know or turn a blind eye to
It needs to. Went through 2 seasons of Beastars, a re-make of Trigun, and I believe, is now going to debut season 3 of Beastars soon. I want to end my suffering with more suffering. #HnKSeason2
Studio Ghibli also suffered from MAD crunch time before their no crunch policy for Boy And The Heron. The crunch was so bad, one of the planned inheritors of Ghibli suffered a heartattack and died.
its so fitting that science saru gets to animate dandadan. only a studio that weird could get a show about a grandma ghost stealing some guys nuts, sexual offender aliens, and somehow still a better romance than 99% of shojo manga.
Okay, I get how you can't include every studio, and just focused on a selection of the big ones, but not including Pierrot is wild. And yes, I know you addressed their omission. But the studio that brought us Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul, Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, etc. deserved a spot more than some on this list for sure.
The animators at Bones are freaking madlads. They're one of those studios who can literally use a majority of their budget on a scene of two girls talking in a hallway.
This was a great video! My favorite studios are Trigger and KyoAni. While, on the surface, the two studios seem about as different as you could get; they both have funding models entirely outside the norm for the industry, which leads to the widest amount of creative freedom. And they don't miss!
that was so bloody cool there are too many information in this video that i should come back and watch it for so many times to fully understand and thank it was really a good video

You keep making it sound like these animation studios made all these as anime originals, while in some cases like Code Geass being a Sunrise original or Ghibli just making their own mangas and then animating them it works. But for others it doesn't.
