I never new that a smart plug connected to wifi would be so helpful with aquariums.

Tazawa Tanks FYI use caution when plugging a power strip to the KASA outlet as they only can take up to 12amps adding a power strips with multiple lights or pumps or other fixtures could easily add up, I would say closer to 10amps to be safe .

Great idea. Just received the super cool t-shirt and stickers. Thank you for sending, love wearing it up here in Maine. Starts a Lot of cool conversation. Even one of local stores employee's has been watching and trying to change the way they operate. Keep up the good work it means a Lot.

I have my aquarium plugged in a smart power bar, lights on a timer just like you but I also use it to power of pump and power head for water changes. I also turn pump and power head off when feeding fish. Love it.

I love my analog timers but I did get digital timers and thought it was a game changer. Then I found my Alexa digital plugs and your right! These guys are awesome for my tank lighting! And I use this for my living room lights as well so when I am on vacation it keeps my house looking lived in!

Great info. I use this brand throughout my house, even for my wall room light switches. They also make power strips that have multiple outlets on them that can be controlled independently of each other. After it has been setup through my app I pretty much just just use voice commands with my Amazon Alexa device to control everything. Also one more important thing all brands of these smart switches are not created equally. The one thing I like about this brand is if you lose power they will return to their last state when power was applied. So for example if you just lost power for say a few minutes when power is restored they will return to power on if it was on before power was lost. I had used a cheaper brand before and found this out when I had a short power failure. I had to manually turn them back on, while the TP-Link brand all turned back to the state they were in once power was restored.

There are great power strips like this also and each plug on the strip can be controlled independently or all together. Its great. I have alot of planted tanks so the strip is nice for one plug for light one for co2 regulator and the other plugs for pump and heater. All in one strip. Great video keep up the good work.

I've been using these for many years for many different things. I even stumbled upon a smart power strip one day and its awesome! It allows you to control each individual outlet plus 4 individual USB Ports. It has proved to be very useful 👍

Been using them for over a year now. Something else you can do with them is plug your filters into them. Handy when it comes to water changes or if you need to turn off filters during feedings.

Another purpose I’ve found really helpful is during water changes. I use a smart plug on a submersible pump & garden hose cut to length and it has completely eliminated water spills. Put the plug on the pump when emptying the tank (40 breeder) and verbally stop the pump when 60% empty. And better yet, move the plug to the bathroom, put the pump in a 5 gallon bucket being filled with 78 deg bath water, and once the tank is full, verbally cut the pump off and DONE. No spills and very quick.

Difficulty I had with manual timers was actually the weight and bulk in some places. Should also point out you can also get wifi powerbars/powerstrip which can useful with each socket possibly named. Can be more useful if you have a lot of plug requirements. Saltwater tanks for example may have flow controllers, a skimmer, light for refugium in a sump etc. Being able to control each or all at the same time really useful. Now have a controller with a powerbar built for it. Expensive though in comparison and not needed for the majority.

I am still waiting for the price of smart plugs to come down to a reasonable amount in my country (Aus). Annoyingly they cost about triple what a digital timer does here.

Question...if you wanted to turn on and off the lights manually do you need to disable the wireless device?
@PaulMartin61
@PaulMartin61 4 года назад
No, you simply use the app on your phone to manually turn the lights on/off. Remember, if you do manually turn the lights on while they are scheduled to be off, the light will stay on until the next 'off' schedule.
@winstonarmstead184
@winstonarmstead184 4 года назад
Just remember that when your lights are plugged into the wifi device, the light are always manually in the "ON" state. If your lights are manually in the "OFF" state even if connected to the wifi device, they will not turn on. So the answer to your question is yes. But even if your lights are programmed to be on a timer you can still go into the app and turn the lights on and off whenever you want. HIGHLY recommended to have. Zenzo pretty much covered all the key points. I've been using the same ones for more than a year. Except I use the round ones. Changed my life. Link to the ones I have. I got a 4 pack for $30 ($7.50 each). smile.amazon.com/Outlet-Assistant-Control-Function-Required/dp/B07CVH7WPD/ref=pd_bap_rp_22?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07CVH7WPD&pd_rd_r=0e3f9d9f-0ff3-4304-af37-70518918d78a&pd_rd_w=dV9y3&pd_rd_wg=3X1Tb&pf_rd_p=f572f03b-5f93-4ec5-b998-5bd20d922544&pf_rd_r=67RT7KEY4N2GGHMX6W66&psc=1&refRID=WG5CH0XHJMA2S4PWNWPX

I am waiting for Google to add the ability to power off the plug, wait 5 minutes, then automatically power on the plug again. This is very helpful for turning off the filter during feeding. There are also "smart" fish feeders now too.

Honestly.. once you've got your schedule programmed into your phone, how often do you manually manage your lights?
@MrCjon71
@MrCjon71 4 года назад
Anytime I'm doing maintenance on my tanks that is outside the scheduled time for the tanks to be lit. Or if you want to show them off to a visitor that comes by when the lights are scheduled to be off.
@petervandieren

You are just in time. I am looking into making my home smarter, starting with my aquariums. Is it true you have to reconnect/reprogram them when you've had a power outage? Or do they remember their schedules?
@TazawaTanks

They remember the schedules. For example, the one I used in the video was unplugged for about an hour. When I plugged it back in, it went right back to the program.

I have a wifi power stripe so all my aquarium devices are controlled. I like this so I can turn off the heater when doing a water change. Turn off the filter when cleaning it. Have the lights come on at different times. I also use the plugs to control air filter on my furnace, and have a couple of split plugs where one is standard and the other is controllable.
