I’ve had one African mudskipper for about 12 years now - he is one very old man at this point. I’ve kept him in water that is as salty at 1.014 specific gravity and he has been fine. He used to be in a tank with archerfish and mangroves but the mangroves didn’t survive and the archerfish passed away. These days he just lives out his life being fat and demanding food whenever I walk by.

I feel, a shallow but long tank, basically a 'shoreline' set-up is best for mudskippers. If one doesn't want to keep other fish in the water, just deep enough that they can fit as a whole length to the bottom. And it is good. But maybe that is just me. I also believe, trying a 'siphon' set-up would be intriguing if you have a sump tank. Basically, you slowly fill up the water till it triggers a siphon which empties it to a shallow level. Only to restart. Creating a varying depth throughout the day.

1) That would be an interesting & probably profitable project to find a way to breed and raise mud skippers. 2) There is a fairly close relative of the mudskipper that lives in freshwater not known to come out on land but I don't remember genus & species from Australian-Inddo area(if I remember correcttly). There is a genus of swimming ant (brackish water) that might be a interesting food source if it didn't harm the fish) food source. 3) There are two brackish water Asia Cichlids that could be interesting to keep:a) Canara Pearlspot or Orange Chromide Cichlid (Etroplus canarensis). b) Green Chromide (Etroplus suratensis). 3) Archerfish, except Clouded Archerfish (Toxotes blythii) and Primitive Archerfish (Toxotes lorentzi because of freshwater requirements would not be acceptable. 4) An interesting set up might be the Larger African Mudskippers with Green Chromides, Four-eyed fish (Anableps sp.),( "right-handed" males need l"eft-handed" females with to mate, while "left-handed" males need "right-handed" females to which to mate. Imagine the gender confusion there if they wanted to change genders?》and possibly Asian Tigerfish (Datnoides sp.) If the other fish where toolarge for the Tigerfish to eat. 5) Asian Mudsippers might be good with Rainbowfish and the Bumblebee goby (a favorite fish of mine) that you mentioned. 6) it would be interesting to know if all brackish water, maybe even saltwater fish, especially Mudskippers do well in a truly Lake Tanganyika or Lake Malawi setup because of the minerals and salts they contain. 5) Slightly off topic, would the African Giant Emperor Cichlid or Yellow-belly Cichlid or Kuhe from Lake Tanganyika do well in a saltwater setup?

Mudskippers have been bred in captivity a couple of times. The most important things for getting started with breeding are a deep mud layer and a tide simulation system.

Have you ever looked into a falloff style tank for them? Is that a setup that you would do for yours and it makes things easier on you in terms of care or maybe it just gives you different methods for setting up the land section? When you mentioned the cycle of the habit I couldn't help but try to think of a way to have the water parameters swing in some sort of "very fancy" setup and how that would work. Very cool, as always. Thanks for the video and it was good to just sit back and hear you teach us a bit about your care, the fish, and learn some stuff.

@@willsonstrong25 I'd say 20 gallon long minimum for the smallest species, like indian mudskippers, I'm currently making a setup for Indian mudskippers, just bought the sand; mine is a 90 litres tank (23.7 gallons)

@soaping4153 it has taken me over a year to find the indian dwarf mudskippers. I wanted to find them locally to avoid the shipping costs, but no one has the indian mudskippers. They always have the African ones. I finally ordered them from aqua imports. Their price was good and the shipping wasnt horrible. They are supposed to be here tomorrow. I'm Uber excited.

Great Video 👍🏻 Would like to get Mudskippers someday. Didn't know that all of them are wild caught. Not sure how to think about it. If I'll get them, I'll probably try to get the least endangered one. Also someone needs to make the first Step anyways to start a captive bred Population. Hopefully someone will figure it out within the next few Years 😊 Edit: apparently they are all Least Concern besides a few Species of which we don't have enough Data. At least according to Fishbase

I've heard of people keeping fiddler crabs with mudskippers, what would be your opinion on that? Is it a good idea? Would the parameters change a lot?

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but do they need a filter? Or just waterflow? Wondering if enough floating plants and being lightly stocked would be fine? How deep should the water be? Wondering how i could easily filter or move the water in only a couple inches.
@TazawaTanks
@TazawaTanks 2 месяца назад
Floating plants and water flow is most likely fine, as beneficial bacteria can live on any surface. Just make sure that the water quality is good.

Is it alright to just keep one in a tank? You mentioned that you could have about 3 or 4 Indian mudskippers in a min of 20 gallons, but what if someone just wanted to keep a singular mudskipper? Or is it not a good idea to keep them on their own?

The Indian mudskippers have a reddish/brown color pattern on their fins, while the African mudskippers have blue coloration.

I'm new to aquariums and while I don't believe in poaching, I did find this video interesting, from the natural world perspective. Most organisms coming from Africa have a knack for survival - do you find that is the same for aquarium plants and animals too?
