YES! thank you for pointing out Xaden weaponizing Violets incompetence. lots of people are rightfully calling Violet annoying in Iron Flame but Xaden was just as insufferable imo. such a flop!😭 loved this video ❣️

A phrase I heard/read recently, DNFing is Self-Care. Edit: Fourth Wing was so stupid, but I had a great time reading it. It was a hoot. But I DNF'd Iron Flame* around 5 chapters. It read like it hadn't been edited.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed Wilder Girls. I struggled with reading during the time and yet WG was such an easy yet horrific read. I wonder if it's getting a sequel

OMG I loved Divine Rivals!!! But I also love historical fiction!! (The American Girl series were my first ever favorite books lol) Edit: I do agree the world building is a little messy, but I also think it may have been an attempt at intentionally starting the character off where the reader is (ie not knowing anything) and we learn more as she does. Also? Book two (I’m reading it now) builds on it in a way that I really enjoy as well.

Omg I was almost torn to shreads in Fable for saying I didn't finish Divine Rivals and that I didn't really like it. 😂😂😂

Do I agree that Iron Flame needed more editing? 100% I was VERY DISAPPOINTED by it BUT I am willing to set it aside for my love of fourth wing & will continue reading. But yea Violet was annoying in this book & she wanted Xaden to tell her everything but she couldn't be trusted ...... End rant

I JUST finished reading The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon before I turned this on. I loved it, but I was in the mood for a slower story with mostly one character. It was also my first Stephen King book and I enjoyed his writing style, occasional insight but never getting too flowery. I’m not into horror though so I’m unsure how many of his books I’ll read but I did like this one.

I think the problem with Iron Flame is the fact that I think it was rushed. The publisher probably wanted the second book out fast because Fourth Wing was such a success. I did still enjoy it but it was also far too long & rather boring in places. I’m hoping with the third book she’ll be able to take her time and we’ll get a book that’s just as good as Fourth Wing. Of course this is just my opinion and I could be wrong about her being rushed, although I don’t think so 😂💔

I DNF’d Divine Rivals too! The world building was simply too sloppy and the romance was too insta-lovey

based on the plot alone divine rivals should have been my favorite book ever. but the writing for me was so messy and the character development/ relationship development was just so poorly executed i could barely get through it. i was so sad :,(

Most of my DNF's this year were really just putting them back on the shelf to save for a different mood or a non-judgmental DNF because they were triggering. I don't really consider either of those a bad thing, so I can't complain. I only had 11 actual this-sucks DNF's for 225 books read.

I completely agree about Iron Flame! I loved Fourth Wing. I binged the whole audiobook in basically one sitting on 1.5 speed during a road trip. I feel like Yarros is fantastic at writing action scenes and not great with dialog, but somehow IF was just one angsty conversation after another and there was no action for about 8 chapters. I did suffer (and I do mean suffer) through the whole book. You did not miss much by DNF-ing. The subplot with Xaden's ex was the dumbest thing in the world. She could have been a conniving girlboss with depth but Yarros gave her dumb bitch energy.

THANK YOU! You know I didn't really like Fourth Wing but I read iron flame because my friend wanted to buddy read it, and what I got out of that book is that Xaden is a piece of crap lol. Violet may be annoying but he was on another level. I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm on Violet's side

I liked Divine Rivals a lot. It had its flaws and inaccuracies, but I kind of dig the POV of magicless mortals interacting with magic and doing mortal jobs. But I do agree it did not live up to the level of hype I've seen surrounding it.

I gave up on divine Rivals mainly because it felt too fairy tale like despite it taking place during war. Especially when they got together. It got too fluffy to where it felt like the author disregarded the war plot line to just right romance and that really bothered me

I ended up finishing Iron Flame but it was so boing and long that I should've DNFed instead.

Misery by Stephen King was the first of his books that i read and i DNFed it 😭😭 idk something about his writing

I liked Pet Semetary, Carrie and Cell (I think that's what it's called), but I generally dislike most of Stephen King's writings. They're definitely not for everyone, and I don't find his stuff scary.

I love Stephen King, but I didn't like The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon or Pet Sematary either. I've never read Misery though, I hope it works out for you

I listened to Wilder Girls on audiobook years ago and I was bored with it. I don’t remember anything from that book.

Personally, I hate Steven King. His full length stories drag, he throws in s3x scenes that make no sense, and I just find a lot of it gross. If you’re going to read his work, I think the short stories are more digestible but have mostly the same issues.

I DNFed 17 books this year - honestly I typically know within 20-50 pages if I’m gonna like a book or not and life is too short for me to read bad books when I have 85 books on my owned TBR (and all my library holds 😂).

I should have DNF’d Wilder Girls cuz I could not for the life of me tell you a single thing about that book. You described it far better than I could have. (and I even listened to the audiobook, they are usually easier for me to understand and get invested in)

I need to DNF rather than allow my 'I've startrd so I'll finish' compulsion to beat me everytime. Instead they drag me down as they take me so long to finish because i don't want to pick it up again, when i should ditch it and move on.

FINALLY, someone else who not only acknowledged that The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon exists, but that it is terrible! I hated that book so much. XD Not a Stephen King hater overall, as I do like some of his books, but of the ones I dislike, that one easily tops the list. Glad you got out before the absolute stupidity of the ending where... *Spoilers* ...the girl throws her portable radio or whatever at a flipping bear and causes it to run off while she thinks it's some sort of evil entity. It's a 'great' conclusion to a book that ranges from boring to absolutely gross bodily issues (in terms of her getting sick, boy did I not need those descriptions) to having an annoying protagonist that very quickly goes against the personality she was said to have had. *End spoilers* Yeah, screw that noise. XD

Some of my DNFs this year were super hyped but I have no regrets 😂 some standouts being All’s Well (loved Bunny but absolutely hated this), The School for Good Mothers, Scorched Grace, and Dead Collections.

I lost count at the number of books I DNF'd since September... newer books and even classic books. I just view it as my brain not being in a reading mood LOL If a book is hyped too death I'll usually avoid reading it because I''ll be sure to be disappointed/let down

I rarely DNF a book. Once I start, I usually finish (unless it's like 3000+ pages). Probably why I'm picky about what I read.

I somehow got through the 28-hour audiobook that is Iron Flame. I don't know why I did that. This pattern repeats over and over: Violet has an epiphany because she's the smartest person on earth --> she holds out on the reader on a cliffhanger just because --> everyone risks their lives acting on her hunch --> some inconsequential revelation based on a boring little detail from many chapters ago. Violet's character is an abuse of the Mary Sue / "chosen one" tropes. Xaden, Tairn, Andarna all choose her because she's sooo special. She's endowed with the most sought after ability because she's sooo special. Imogen hated her but grew to love and respect her. Cat hated her but grew to love and respect her. Again, because she's sooo special. She somehow transforms from a weak, short person with a chronic medical condition to fucking Chuck Norris. Her personality is bleh and her inner monologue is annoying. Girl has no charisma. The sexual tension and interpersonal conflict between Violet and Xaden is contrived and excessive, and the sex scenes are cringe. It's all so repetitive and not believable. I wish one of them would die already, cause the relationship no longer serves the plot. Speaking of death, it's clear who has plot armour and who's expendable, so deaths are *shrug*. It's somehow sooooo hard to kill a single venin in Fourth Wing, and a whole bunch of people die, but it's so easy in Iron Flame. And what's with the reused tree metaphors! If I ever hear of Dain described as "the boy I used to climb trees with" again or "I'd like to climb Xaden like a tree" I'm going to rip my hair out.

💔 I haven't read any of your listed books (though more unsure if I want to give 4th wing a go as I have heard several people say Iron Flame was awful.) I dnf quite a lot. I think in just Dec I had 6 DNF's. For me, there isnt enough time in my life to read all the awesome books that exist already. Not gonna waste it with books that arent hitting.

I just finished Iron Flame yesterday. Fun book, but yes, the first half is a book all of it's own. Violet and Xaden's circular arguments are annoying as hell, especially with Xaden's "YoUR NoT ASkinG The RIGht QuestIONS". But the two of them do resolve this (after admittedly way too long). And Violet tell's him to knock it off with the making her guess. So in conclusion, I didn't read this for the romance or the spectacular world building, but the action, dragons, and smut. So it's just that. It's a silly indulgence that's fun and enjoyable. Not anything of amazing quality though. *I highly recommend the Serpent and The Wings of Night for people who want to read actual quality writing, world building, romance, and smut. I personally am becoming a big Carissa Broadbent fan, the first book of hers I read was Daughter of no Worlds. Also very good*

The way people talk about loving Fourth Wing, then going on to hate the sequel is how I feel about the Crave series. I really enjoyed Crave, but I now consider Crave as a standalone, because the direction the second book went . . . Hate it.

I love historical fiction, but Divine Rivals hit all my annoy buttons before the end of chapter 2. I was reading it for a book club and that sense of obligation to others wasn’t even enough to make me power through.

I liked the dark tower series but im not a fan of his other work, if you liked the His Dark Materials series youd probably like the dark towers series imo
