When crocheted correctly, the waistcoat stitch (aka the knit stitch) literally looks as if it was knitted, not crocheted. However, to make this stitch the right way, you need to know where to insert the hook!
If you enjoy my video tutorials and would like to support my channel, please consider purchasing a pattern from my Etsy or Ravelry shops:

You are so right!! This is the absolute best tutorial out there for this stitch. Your explanation is crystal clear. Thank you, I would never have used this stitch without your excellent instruction.

Your piece looks lovely-so smooth and straight. Your instruction about the insertion point is quite clear. That insertion point is what I use with rows of double crochets also. This is especially important to me when making “filet crochet”. This keeps the vertical portion of the stitch to stand straight up and down. Otherwise you wind up with rows of stitches slightly tilting first one way and then the other on the next row. I enjoy all of your videos and have made quite a few prayer shawls for my church using your patterns. Thank you so much !

Hi Dianne, thank you so much for your comment! I do the same thing as you described with double crochets! The crochet fabric looks so much better and neater that way. I mentioned and showed it many of my tutorials.

Thank you Olga, for teaching the right way to crochet this stitch! Also the tip to use this entry point for double crochet stitches (especially with filet crochet or netting) is very usefull, since it will correct slanting stitches. Greetings from the Netherlands!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! The instructions are very clear and I love the swatches I’ve done. The only consideration after some experimenting is that, for me, doing it the “wrong” way works better for me if doing color work. I find this way the sections of color are more defined. Is that your experience?

I love the straight rows, but it looks different from the original stitch. I was looking for a stitch that looked knitted. (I can crochet, but knitting isn't my forte.) Is there a stitch that works in a straight manner that looks like knitting?

I'm sorry to hear you have trouble with it! Don't give up! I have this video where I used a different color yarn, so that stitches are more visible. You can also slow down the speed of the video in the settings. I hope it helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z1Hv6TeVfdE.html

Unfortunately I can't remember now, and I threw away the label. It was something bulky, category 5 I think.

Why not put a chain at the end? I think that is what is confusing me. I'm going to try this. Thank you for correcting.

@@OlgaPoltava in your video when you start the second row. You say that you don't chain to start the next row, you just start to crochet the second row. Is there a reason why?

I'm sorry but the quality is such bs. In the Round I found you're Video very helpful but for the Row I can´t quite understand (and see!!!) where you put you're stitches.. I guess I have to switch to another pattern for my project..
@OlgaPoltava

What does "bs" mean? Below standard? I would agree, the video quality on this video is not the best. I don't have high quality filming equipment. I rely on my old iPhone and daylight for filming.
