THE COMMUNITY REACTION IS COMING! But in the meantime, why not enjoy some regular Doctor Who content while we wait for the next episode of Season 1. Hope you enjoy!
Best Cliffhanger in Doctor Who History is easily when 7 calmly lowered himself over a railing for no reason and then was stuck literally hanging off a cliff.
I heard that apparently the reason that infamous scene is in there is because the producers originally wanted to have him scale down the cliff but due to budget they couldn't achieve it
Russell T. Davies directly mirrored dwfan91's take on the timeless child. This foreshadows the reveal that Davies is actually a future regeneration of dwfan91.
I think I may be the only fan on the planet who really likes The Magician’s Apprentice/The Witch’s Familiar. I must have watched them dozens of times. I think I’m just a closet Missy simp.
being a poor american who didn’t get a good enough cable package to watch live doctor who until series 9, i’ll always love those episodes for being the first ones i got to experience as it was happening. i was 12 though so i loved any dalek episode, even asylum
You are not alone! I’m also a big fan of those episodes. Most of Missy’s best moments come from those episodes, I love the back-and-forth between the Doctor and Davros, and Clara’s dynamic with Missy is fantastic.
TOP 5!!! Pandorica opens - most nostalgic shit of all time, mega good to the maximum Utopia - everytime I watch this I feel like I've come down with a fever for the absolute goosebumps I get. Also that bit in the score, you that bit when the master enters the Tardis, the wacky tribal drums and vocal melodies? it's absolute perfection Bad wolf - no End of time part 2 - the fraud my beloved Turn left - most satisfying and HYPE AS SHIT THING EVER
Definitely agree on Utopia. I enjoy watching first time reactioners (made up word) reacting to early nu-Who stuff. That ending always gets jaws a-dropping.
I think its especially good because its a great reveal for both old and new fans. New fans because its the reveal that 10 isnt the last time lord, and for classic fans because its the master. The drama is peak in that moment.
I watched this episode as a kid when it aired and that cliffhanger fully cemented this show as my favourite show ever. Utopia will always be my favourite episode for that.
My top 5 in no particular order: . Utopia . Last of the Time Lords . Turn Left . The Stolen Earth . The Pandorica Opens Lot of bias to what I saw as a kid clearly lol, but those Capaldi ones missing the sting really does hurt them
I think it would be impossible to argue that nostalgia doesn't play a factor in all our rankings- me for example, I doubt Aliens of London and the Empty Child would be as high up as they are if it weren't for the memories. Also, on a different subject, I like your name:)
My top 5- 5. The Woman Who Fell To Earth i mean there's not much more to say that you havent. its so enjoyable, especially on rewatch. the way she earnestly says "i'm almost gonna miss ya" and genuinely didn't think she would see them again. i love the way they're naturally integrated into a group and it's a great predecessor for the dymanic to come. 4. Bad Wolf i almost want to tie this one with #3 because its just so phenomenal. i don't even think i could have survived if i had watched this live. then again i was about 2 when that happened so... having the next episode was a relief but did not make me any less shocked at what happened. at 8 years old i remember jumping off the couch and searching for the remote to put the next episode on, just insane. 3. Spyfall Pt.1 oh my god, i would lie if i said i didnt know he was the master beforehand. i didnt watch spyfall live, and i was looking forward to how the reveal would play out, and by god it did not disappoint. the way sacha reinvents himself in the matter of seconds, he totally transforms in the best way possible. and like you said, he TOTALLY understands the essence of who the master is, which is incredible because he admitted to actively trying not to watch prior master performances to make his incarnation his own. he pulls off every aspect of the master tremendously, he is THE GOAT after delgado! and even then, the cliffhanger itself, i genuinely had no idea how they were gonna get out of this one. its a fun resolve but its an even better cliffhanger. 2. Turn Left just, WOW. i really don't think i had ever been as worried for the plot ever until this moment. this was like the ULTIMATE LOCKED IN i had ever been with doctor who up to that point, and tbh probably still! to be fair, i was a kid, and these stakes were more than my brain could handle at a normal level. but jesus the escalation of all dialogue and the stakes getting higher each time, wowza. just a+. i also have the distinct memory of continually pretending i was donna and asking people what year it was as a kid in public (a cringefree child) 1. Utopia ARE YOU KIDDING MAN. THIS IS WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF. THIS CLIFFHANGER... oh my god AGAIN all the pieces coming together and escalating, YANA, the frickin REGENERATION, the confusion as a kid because i didnt know WHO the master was yet but i was SO DEVASTATED and EXCITED at the same time!! devastated because the doctor had found such a great friend/twin in minds with Professor Yana, just for him to be evil, and EXCITED because what the hell is about to happen in the next episode?!! not only did i jump off the couch, i screamed. these are the episodes that make you COMPLETELY locked in, EVEN if you know the next episode is seconds away/no wait. i just don't see a possibility not to be, especially at such a young age.
A bit ago I got my friend into Doctor Who. He had barely any knowledge of the show, and I watched nearly whole thing with him. Sadly he didn’t like the slithleen. The bonus is that he did watch nearly whole show but refused to watch after capaldi unfortunately. I mean he did put himself through a few of Jodie’s best rated episodes and he said he hated them. Well the bonus he did enjoy what came before.
I love the cliffhanger for Heaven Sent. To be fair that’s partially because it’s really just powerful coming right after that amazing montage. I also really like the Face the Raven one, the Turn Left cliffhanger, the Silence in the Library one, and the one where Sylvester McCoy hangs himself off of a literal cliff, just because of how bizarre it is
31:41 i remember my reaction watching it live, i LOVED it. it made so much sense since we saw him using all that energy earlier in the episode anyways, so it works. i never understood the hate for the sneeze regeneration its perfect. also, like you, i was incredibly excited to get to peter as the doctor. anyways im yappin i gotta keep watching
I would say the poison sky has a cliffhanger. The tardis randomly takes off Martha is taken away off earth when she wanted to stay the hand is bubbling like crazy what’s going on. Big cliffhanger
Excellent list, cant really complain about any placements - I remember being so hyped at the Professor Yana reveal in Utopia as a kid, well deserved S Tier
I like series 9! I just don't like the premiere and the Zygon episodes. The speech at the end of the Zygon Inversion is great (because it's written by Steven Moffat) but the rest is... so goddamn bad. The political allegory is honestly pretty disgusting. But I love the look of the series, I love the 12th Doctor and Clara's dynamic, I love the decision to do the 2 parters, I love the 4th wall breaking, I love Peter Capaldi, I love the finale A LOT and I love the goal Steven Moffat was working towards.
No "The Poison Sky" cliffhanger? I feel like that counts if you're counting stuff like "Doomsday" Also 18:30 failwhale appearance lets go My favourite type of cliffhangers are ones where the circumstances change, not just the Doctor is in peril. So stuff like Inferno... part four? I think it is? Where the events the Doctor is trying to prevent are now put in motion. Or Carnival of Monsters Part 1. Or The Hungry Earth. Or The Rebel Flesh. Moffat's era actually had a lot of these types of cliffhangers. But they're my favourite types. 27:20 I have a replica of that prop!
I think a lot of the cliffhangers like Aliens of London and Empty Child for example are hindered by the resolution at the beginning of the next episode
My favorite NuWho cliffhangers gotta be The Impossible Planet one & Impossible Astronaut. They built up the suspense really well imo. Would also add Bad Wolf's as a third due to how badass it is.
Thus is kinda like unrelated but I love the episode with David tenant (the one with the sontarans and the killer cars I forget the name of it)and he puts in a gas mask and says, “ are you my mummy” and it’s just funny amd and a great call back so idk yeah I just had to put that here
Idk man the end of time cliffhanger gets me hyped everytime. Specifically the time lords returning. The first 4 series did a lot to build up the mystique of Gallifrey as the home planet the Doctor destroyed, hated, but also missed dearly as the last of his kind. Id argue that the show's relationship with Gallifrey is the thing that differentiates the old and new show. So within that context Gallifrey coming back was HUUGE. I rate most of your other takes though. One thing I'll add is that the heavent sent reveal was spoiled by the episode synopsios back in 2015 which pissed me off at the time.
10 being taken to the control room in Age of Steel is because he has 2 hearts and this was a new concept they wanted to understand. They literally said it in the episode
"Hey this guys the literal only threat to our operation. Let's take him to our control centre and not restrain him at all. Oh no he killed us all" If this was a Chibnall era episode we would never be allowed to forget it
Our here wondering if anybody loves the first half of "The End of Time" as if I we don't like "Love and Monsters". But seriously I loved the first half! It was just so INSANE, as insane as the half restored master! And the shaking of the heads was so effing creepy o.o I can watch it today as a 33 year old weirdo and still makes me feel funny in my stomach 😂 I have to disagree HARD. For me it is at least an "A" tier.
The Woman Who Fell to Earth is not a great episode. It’s a mediocre episode by Chibnall era standards. The highlights are Ryan’s grandmother who gets randomly killed off and the “Eat my salad” guy who gets unceremoniously killed off.
mfw I realise there is one audio error in the middle of the video where I didn't cut out me repeating myself which could've put me at the perfect hour.
Hell yeah! Now THIS is what I call content! And yes, of course I want a classic who version of this, I’m a simple man.. Also when you do the classic who version of this could you add that tier list to this one so we can see how the classic and revival cliffhangers compare
10:19 i love artistic effects it’s exactly why i really liked how the star beast looked, yes i know it didn’t look entirely real but it was really unique almost cartoonish but in a good way
Another banger dude! Minor nitpick for this one tho I think the musics a little loud and kinda distracting but otherwise great vid, please never stop :D
ur doctor who rankings are so good i love watching them!! im surprised you didn’t rank the cliffhanger in the poison sky leading to the doctors daughter but tbf i wouldn’t want to talk more about the sontaran two parter if i didn’t have to either lmao
I feel you can't really judge a cliffhanger without considering the follow up. Like what makes the Empty Child cliffhanger perfect for me is the cleverness of how the Doctor gets out of it.
@@dwfan91- more of a cliffhanger to me personally than the other modern who regenerations as for most people was there first time seeing a regeneration so more shocking like wrf is going on why had the doctor changed what happens next so yes I’d say it’s a cliffhanger
I just wanna point out that there are dalek timelord hybrids in Evolution of the Daleks and then later the Hybrid is said to be a dalek timelord hybrid in Series 9.
@@dwfan91- I'm gonna be honest. I was commenting this on a different video about dalek sek and then it ended and autoplayed this one. I didn't expect my comment to be put on this one. Though I understand that the hybrid is meant to be clara and the doctor, I was rewatching Evolution of the Daleks one time and I realized that the time lords theory of what the hybrid was kinda was in that episode.
The hybrid was said to be from 2 warrior races, the time lords just thought it’d be a dalek and time lord. Honestly the Master counts too after absorbing the Cyberium.
@@dwfan91- If you wanna deep dive each part, more power to you. But considering classic who is comprised of about 700 individual episodes, that seems like too much work, both for you to make and for us to watch. Ranking each serial by the quality of their cliffhangers to me feels more succinct and lets you talk about the good stuff without getting bogged down with the boring shit.
The reason people put Blink above The Time of Angels 2-parter is because of the unnecessary additions to the Weeping Angel canon that added nothing to their fear factor and in fact started them down the path of being just another overused punchline monster. They didn't need to be able to talk through dead people. Why can they even do that? What purpose does it serve? Did they evolve this ability over the course of millions of years just so they could taunt the Doctor? It makes no sense. And then there was the absolutely awful scene where they showed us them moving super slowly and in statue form. The whole point of them is that we don't know what their true form looks like and that they move fast as fuck. But instead we see them slowly move in their quantum-locked form. I guess you could handwave it as being a product of their hibernation, but really? Sleepy Weepy Angels? The only addition to their canon from the 2-parter that was actually cool and made them more scary was the 'image of an angel becomes an angel part'. But the rest was just so unnecessary and was ultimately reductive.
They're psychic creatures, this adds SO MUCH layers and dimensions to them. I actually disagree with the Image becoming an Angel thing being cool because it's the only part of the story that actively retcons Blink (and also it's far too overpowered.) Honestly that gimmick would work better as its own one-off monster. The moving of the Angel was dumb though.
@@dwfan91- I agree with most of these picks but i wasn't the biggest fan of eve of the daleks, and i think war of the sontarans would have to be near the top
The reveal of Rassilon and the Timelords in End of Time Part 1 is an E-tier cliffhanger? I get that the story isn’t great, but that moment is one of the most exciting cliffhangers in New Who.
ngl this video randomly spurred me on to finally watch the 13th doctors era (mostly cuz of ur comments about sacha dhawans master) and i am THOROUGHLY enjoying it. thanks for the enlightenment bro 🙏🙏
