The G League Ignite was formed by the NBA to take top draft prospects away from the NCAA, and so far it's been the most successful alternate path to college basketball. The G League Ignite has signed several top high schools recruits, Jalen Green and Scoot Henderson were top 3 picks, Jonathan Kuminga was drafted 7th, and 12 Ignite players have made the NBA so far. But the G League Ignite is actually failing, all of these players are struggling in the NBA, and in this video, we find out what happened to every G League Ignite player in the NBA?
Will Matas Buzelis or Ron Holland be the first good players from G League Ignite?

You neglected to discuss the emergence of NIL as a viable alternative to turning professional prior to entering the draft. Some of the most prominent college players make upwards of a million dollars due to NIL deals, which is arguably as lucrative for them as Ignite would've been had they elected to join. I know that there are significant issues with NIL and its certainly not the panacea that some might've hoped for, but it has certainly made college a viable avenue once again.
@kevinedwards2067
@kevinedwards2067 4 месяца назад
NIL is destroying college...meaning college stars at their schools are just jumping left and right for a bit more money. If you get on average over $60 -70 for free room/board, education, tutoring, and college fees this should be enough? Plus imagine if they all got 3,000 money stipend that's what most college students need. Not expensive gold chains, fancy cars, when a lot of players flop or don't play well college are going look at wasted money! Will all college players play hard with the bag or money already promised? The Game will eventually dilute itself because National Image & Likeness is just who pays me more too play there!

@@kevinedwards2067 Colleges are profiting regardless. Tuition rates are jacked up for these schools them NIL deals are POCKET CHANGE. And sports is ENTERTAINMENT and a BUSINESS first before anything. Players are not paid to win they're paid for either : their likeness and the attention around them and/or the numbers they put up. Playing for solely a scholarship and a CHANCE of making the NBA is a SCAM. Scoot Henderson isnt good enough of a player currently to warrent his draft pick.. I could see if he was a lower pick but he was top 3. He is absolutely a bust currently regardless of how long he has been in the league, it doesnt matter. If youre a top 3 pick, you better be good enough to average over 10 ppg, 5 assists and 5 boards as a rookie starter. You're on a terrible NBA team and you are a top 3 pick who supposedly has good enough talent to improve and adapt quick enough to start all year, as well as the fact that you're probably the top 2 players on the team. He really has no excuse other than he cant adapt.. He probably isnt made for this, solely because of the fact that nobody gives a damn about winning in the G-League, they only care about individual progress so they can get called up. What do they look like trying to win a G-League chip making 30k a year? That isn't worth it. You'd have more success spending all of that effort at a 9-5 and get a promotion, or on your own business at that point.

Take into account many of the ignite players are one and done essentially. They may spend 6-9 months with the program before elevating to the next level. Their fit on the team that drafts them would seem to be a bigger factor in their success then the months they spend transitioning to being a pro essentially. So im not sure why folks don't focus more on how players fit on the teams they are drafted to and how that can affect the player they become.

You’re ignorant. And you’re a casual. Not every player is going to be a HOF. The G League Ignite has too small a sample size for you to correctly evaluate wether or not it works. So far, yes it does. It’s only been 3 years and they have produced at least 3 nba players a year. Watch basketball. Scoot is a Point Guard. He has the most double doubles of any non center rookie this year. His numbers to not “only come in garbage time”. 30th Dec, he didn’t score 22pts, 7rbs 11ast on 60% 3PT only in garbage time. 6th Jan, he didn’t magically have 17pts 3rbs 10ast in the last 3 minutes of a blowout (which is what garbage time actually is) and by the way, for the first month of the season (when you say he had a historically terrible start which is wrong anyway) out of all players with at least 10 games played and at least 25min per game, he was number 1 in defensive rating. Only two Point Guards have come into the NBA already elite in the last 20 years, Chris Paul & Luka Doncic. All the rest have needed at least a year if not 2,3 or even 4 to grow into their role. The JBA wasn't an opportunity for talented basketball players outside of college, it was purely a showcase for the Ball sons by their father and everyone else became collateral damage. The other players weren't paid what they were promised, and when it went bust they also lost out on the eligibility to play for college. It wasn't anything unique either. Players could already play overseas or they could play for the numerous other minor leagues inside the US. There was the TBL (2018-), UBL (2008-), UBA (2009-16), ABA (2000-), PBL (2008-), APBL (2011-19), IBA (2011-17), ECBL (2015-), NBLC (2011-23), CEBL (2019-), etc.

the reason kuminga and all the other warriors rookies haven’t panned out as soon as warriors fans would have liked is bc of Kerr and his inability to develop young talent. He keeps young players on a tight leash, unless he’s forced to play them bc they either produce (ex Poole) or don’t disrupt the flow of the offense (ex Podz), and doesn’t allow them to have consistent pt to gain more nba experience. We’re only really seeing JK now bc he finally gained Kerr’s trust. It was so frustrating seeing guys like Anthony lamb play over JK and Moody bc Kerr loves hustle players. We argue about this at my work all the time. I feel like talent is at an all time high, but skill (the average skills possessed by the majority of players) might be at an all time low in the modern NBA. I watch league pass games, and am amazed how many games boil down to inefficient transition shot chucking. No plays, no rebounding, no defense, no dribbling with your off hand, trips to the line where the guy misses both FREE throws.... 12 missed transition threes, 8 turnovers, 6 fouls, 9 points scored in 6 mins of game time. These kids getting millions don't have the skills they should have been taught in middle school, and no idea how to be a part of a winning culture. Just trying to pad the stats to get contracts.

Honestly, one of the worst takes I've ever seen. The Super teams were pretty corny, so I didn't watch for a couple of years but coming back and having League pass this season, I was blown away by the amount of 6'8 to 6'11 Swiss army knives in the League today. Guys who can block, defend, rebound, shoot 3s, make every pass, initiate the offense and put the ball on the deck from 30 feet out and drive to the cup and finish gracefully with body control, not just slam it home. Sure, there can be some sloppy ball being played at times, but the skill of the average NBA player today is INSANE. To say skills possessed are low today is laughable.

The ones that aren't are 2nd round picks and 2nd round picks often don't make it in the NBA, regardless of what program they're from. And then in your description you go from your title saying all of them suck, to asking if Matas and Holland will become the first GOOD players, then in a comment reply to someone you say if Jalen Green becomes GREAT it won't be because of GLI. I think it isn’t right to call some of these guys busts or that the Ignite program isn’t working when all of the guys you mention are probably 22 years old or younger. They’re just now getting their feet wet and you already want to say the program they came from hasn’t been successful. Give them a couple more years when they’re around 26,27, 28 years old before you try and casts them off to the side like that. That isn’t fair to them.

The problem is that these high school players aren't getting the proper fundamentals drilled into them when they should be playing in university, learning passion and pride to win for your school and playing ball instead getting the bag and playing against mediocre players who fancy themselves as the next Kobe or Jordan with the ball in the hands and just chucking it up, not learning the fundamentals that should make them better players and NBA recruits.

Bit of a chicken or the egg thing. Players who would rather go to G league likely have other concerns (poor grades, tough family backgrounds, etc). Teams put a lot of emphasis on their interviews with players, but I'm geussing scouts gave a lot more leniency to G-league players as being more NBA ready and likely didnt have to focus as much on those other concern areas. That will probably adjust as we get more data.

And it’s takes a lot of working pieces to become a superstar. Green is the perfect example of why the G-league hurts players. They know they are not getting benched and with no structure from the coaching staff it hurts a lot. They get a big head but they never learn and never grow as a player because they are more worried about points than even trying on defense. It's all about the show off with highlights that make their highlight films look amazing. Why is it the guys coming out of college are better at defense? They have to put in the work and earn their place among their teammates and on the court compared to the G league were it's all about getting your own numbers and the team concept is not there and it shows. If they are not going to put a coaching staff together that actually work the players that makes them work as a team and stop this highlight show bullshit and get down to winning with the team or just end the program because they are hurting these kids in a bad way and they need to stop.

Because numerically speaking there's been more college players... you're essentially saying the ignite creates an ego in players that stops them from playing hard at the next level using j green as your example. What is your take on Dyson Daniels who is a player who earns his playing time due to defense, or marjon Beauchamp going from playing in junior college to contributing defensively on a championship caliber team? I do believe Kuminga had a primarily defensive role coming into the league. You have a very surface level analysis.

Though I think it is quite harsh on players who haven’t been in the league 7 years to see how they fully turn out. I have to agree. If the nba is going to have a development programme it has to take it seriously and actually create an environment that suits that mission. I personally think every g league team should have a development programme. It could be something that draws interest to viewers who want to follow young prospects that sign with the g league clubs or rookies that have come down to play. And finding ways to make the g league championship important as opposed to it just being a testing ground for new basketball rules etc.

How a player fits on the team they are drafted by is more of an impactful factor than the 6-9 months they spend playing and developing with the ignite. This pretty much goes for a player at any point in their career, it's about your fit and comfort within that organization. There's so many talented hoopers in this world you have to have the right combination of intangibles and look. Look at all the guards Kentucky produce, they always take time to become stars....

The logic behind this video barely makes sense. After Daniels, none of the players discussed are lottery picks, so why do you frame them being back in the G league as a bad thing? That's generally what should be expected of second-round draft picks, and they probably made more money in the G league than they would have with an NIL deal in college. On top of that, G league ignite was formed less than 5 years ago, there's no way u can make those claims especially when there were really only 4 lottery picks that you can use as examples. This is especially true when comparing the developmental capability of G league ignite versus college basketball. Maybe more people play in college that's why they have more success stories...and also more busts. The end of the video is actually laughable too. Prospective lottery picks learn more playing against amateurs in college cuz they...play in front of large crowds of people? And playing in front of grown professionals who are all fighting for a spot in the NBA somehow prepares you less...Also Coach K and Roy Williams are retired bud

Many young G-League players lack fundamentals. College was where you learned the game on a 3-D level. MJ always talked about how playing at UNC under Dean Smith helped his game. When you get to the pros or semi-pros, they aren’t in the business of teaching you the game. G-League is a pro league and you’re treated as such. NIL deals, one and done and G-League freshmen will be why American players will continue to have issues, compared to guys developed in the European system. It was like this in previous eras where most guys did at least 2-3 years in college. Tim Duncan aka The Big Fundamental played all 4 years at Wake Forest. You have guys who are tremendous basketball intellects and have insane work ethics like Kobe and Lebron, but most of these dudes who came out of HS or 1 & dones, unless they went to a really good HS or college program aren’t ready. They just coast off of superior athletics and talent.
