@@leonlawson2196 a volcano wouldn't necessarily have an eruption. I feel like the "sun rising" part is exaggerated. I don't think there'd be enough to dragons to cause that much light. They would need some kind of enormous fuel source and I can't imagine what that could be.

The tricky part is that history in this world is chock full of bullshit. Think of the play about Tyrion killing Joffrey. That's the "official" story now, and it'll be what gets passed down. My guess is a volcano erupted.
@jamesgravil9162
@jamesgravil9162 3 года назад
Except that something very similar happened to Valyria a few centuries later, so it's not an isolated incident. Assuming Valyria was a magical event, not a simple volcanic eruption. There's also the shattering of the Neck by the Children of the Forest in the First Age, which left that part of Westeros in ruins. And Asshai in Essos, another dreadful region said to be filled with monsters. There are too many instances of this sort of unnatural devastation in Martin's world for them all to be bullshit (and let's not forget, this is a world that has dragons, ice zombies, giants, faceless assassins, a 500-year-old witch and skin-changing, so a magical Chernobyl isn't out of the question!) I've come across a theory that Valyria was caused by the Faceless Men, who were originally escaped slaves from the mines. This theory suggests that Hardhome may have been a "practice run" for Valyria, involving similar magic. Braavosi isn't _too_ far from Hardhome, being the closest point on the eastern continent to the North. In the books Sam travels staight to Braavos from the Wall. And in one chapter Mance Rayder tells Jon about how he acquired some red silk from a wildling woman which came from distant Asshai. Presumably, that must have been trafficked via Braavos. There are already a few things linking those two parts of the world, so the theory isn't totally unsupported.

He could have been focused on preparing for what he knew was going to be a long winter and storing food. Or the work required to keep the northern lords in line could have been far more difficult than we think, and thus required more of his time. Maybe the north really is so poor that building a fleet of ships would have been seen by Ned as an extravagance. Maybe the north was so depopulated that there weren't enough people to carry out these ideas. Maybe the people wouldn't have supported it due to conservative, medieval mindsets. Being a lord is hard. @@77777Spooky the Manderlys a wealthy but subordinate house managed to build a small fleet of war galleys. The Ironborn and Skagosi who are poorer than every other kingdom were able to build a fleet of longships. The Bolton were never truly loyal. Also most of Ned Stark leadership happen during ten years of plenty so starvation wasn’t a problem. Also a fleet of longships, war galleys and carracks would’ve been helpful during the Greyjoy rebellion. I have a couple theories. 1. the fishers of Hardhome started harvesting whales and the Ibbenese made an example of them, killing the inhabitants and setting fire to their source of lumber, returning for months to ensure the forest had burned, using whale oil to do the job. 2. Volcanic Eruption, which triggers mass forest fires. 3. Rogue Dragon, or a previously unmention species of Dragon more suited to the cold.4.Fire breaks out in Hardhome, and reaches a cache of Whale oil, resulting in fire reaching the forest, which burns and the resulting forest fire drives all the game far from hardhome, causing the few survivors to seek the only shelter left, the caves, and laking clothes(having been burnt and rendered unsuable) slowly freeze to death over six month, eating corpses until the run out.

I think the Hardhome disaster was caused by a volcanic event: a volcanic eruption would explain the fire, tha ashes and the "sun rising from the north" plus the "screams from the caves" could have been smoke and steam flowing at high speed through the caves producing sound like a wind instrument. In alternative it could have been a meteor, something similar to the Tunguska Event in Siberia; huge explosion, as bright as the sun, massive shockwave that flattened 80 million trees but no impact crater; it was registered by seismic stations as far as the UK and Indonesia.

I suspect what happened to Hardhome was one of 2 things: 1) some Valyrian Dragonriders decided to go west and explore the lands beyond the wall for slaves to get, and Hardhome was the only one north of the wall, one well known enough it did trade with Essos. However, while they were trying to conquer and enslave them all, they forgot that wildings and first men have something they never had or imagined: Warging. Warging is fairly common place north of the wall, and it stands to reason if we go by the logic magic declined after the doom worldwide, then it would have been even more common. While under attack, some wilding wargs, much like Varymyr in the books, tried to warg into the dragons, as some wargs can warg into 6 or more animals at once. But dragons are magic, huge, and magically bonded to the valyrians. This caused the dragons to freak out, some attacking each other, while others simply went berserk, and started burning indiscriminately, and because Hardhome was coastal, and a town, and it stands to reason they would trade for or hunt for whale blubber and oil, this caused the stored barrels to spill then ignite, which resulted in a highly large explosion that destroyed the town, killed most if not all the dragons, and alerted the nights watch. And one dragon or more survived, and went feral and mad from the episode, hiding in the caves where it grabbed and stashed any survivors to eat, explaining the horrific screams, perhaps it's wings were too damaged to ever fly again and thus it had to stay there, and thus the nights watch never saw it. This then is why the valyrians didn't try to invade westeros, because one survivor might have made it back and told of the nightmare of men who could control their dragons with their minds. But of course by the time of Aegons conquest, this was forgotten and the ability to warg had become restricted to only beyond the wall so no first men south of the wall could do this or knew they could. However, we do know that Alysanne's dragon never would go beyond the wall, implying a ancestral memory in the dragons remained of the dangers of wargs. 2) They were meddling with magic beyond them and woke up something ancient and dangerous, like a snow dragon or such, essentially causing a mini doom of valyria, perhaps the spell went wrong, perhaps the wrong blood used, whatever the case the result was Hardhome vanished instantly.

I think 600 yrs ago it was a volcano that killed Hardhome, and left ash falling for half a year. The screams from the cave could be gasses or superheated water escaping from vents in the caves. Could even be flammable gas, which could then make fires. Even the dead things in the water could be bodies turned to stone, ala Pompeii. I think the same for Valyria; this does not rule out magical destruction of V, but rather could be the means by which the magic worked.

They could have gone a very eastern route through the Shivering Sea. Maybe Aegon conquered Westeros because he'd heard of the fight between the Valyrians and the Others three hundred years earlier. The caves are a mystery. Maybe screaming COTF? Still believe Mel is Melanie from Hardhome, too. I want those snarks and grumpkins!

I have a theroy what if it was a dragon but a rogue or free dragon. Don't always see how if a dragon is mentioned then everyone always thinks a valerian is riding it, we are told again an again that dragons a proud and smart creatures and that it took either long time a bloodline or some kind of magic to train and ride them. Wouldn't be so hard to think that if a dragon didn't want to be inslaved it would fly away from the Valerian empire. The dragons would like to hide in the cave and have been shown to eat humans.. an after all the humans where it could have just moved on, a single dragon high would have been easy to miss coz nights watch don't look up in the sky, they only think too look down for invaders

I think a practice round for the Valyrian Doom was going on at hardhome. Maybe some Fire wyrms help? But I doubt it's grumpkins. My out there theory is...wights came and the children blew up a volcano with their earth moving magics (not fire magic, earth magic as usual for them) and tried to kill them all. They love a good sacrifice too. Maybe it was a two birds one stone thing for them that went terribly wrong and sent the wights into war mode instead of killing them. I bet grrm dies and we never know at this rate 😭

Children of the forest inhabited these caves. The building of a town north of the wall was an outright declaration of war on them and they used their magic to cleanse the land, took the remaining wildlings into their caves and tortured them horribly. Their magic is as bloody as the Valyrian's.

I've always assumed it was a volcano being implied that destroyed Hardhome. But I'd forgotten about the part saying some were taken as slaves so yea that makes sense it may have been the Valyrians. But is there any other evidence Valyrians roamed that far away? They couldn't even find Bravoos and the city wasn't necessarily hidden, just far away.

Curiously, although the Valyria riders would not raid in such a deceptive manner. It does resemble a surgical strike. I won’t pretend to understand the world beyond the wall. But I like to think there was something or someone significant enough to warrant the attention of Valyria. Perhaps Essos is still connected to Westeros.

Would be interesting if the Others are actually an alien species which crash landed at Hardhome. Then they would have likely came from the "other" moon (pun intended) which once orbited Planetos before it exploded, likely from a meteor. A piece of this meteor may have then landed in Westeros, which is what Dawn is forged from.

I suspect that Hardhome was destroyed during a battle with the Others, the Others probably ambushed the town surprising everyone there, the wildlings tried to fight back but got overrun by wights and used fire to burn them all but the fire got out of control and that doomed everyone.

Isn't the only magic the Freefolk use Varging into animals? I mean now, who knows what they could do in past-maybe some earth shattering magic from Children of the forest (like they used on Hand of Dorne). Or they could kick up the volcano by mining. The Walkers put out fires (and I don't remeber, but I think we didn't see one diying from it [maybe dragonfire], in books or show). The Zombies stops moving only after they burn to ash. Long time since I read the books or watched GoT so correct me if Im wrong.

Hardhome happened somewhere around 300 bc. The doom of valyria happened somewhere around the aegon's conquest. And game of thrones is happening in 300 ac. Doom will come again. But i don't think it is the long night. It would have to do something with fire. Question is where would it be? My suspects. Destruction of Oldtown (euron greyjoy) Destruction of dragonstone (eruption of its volcano) Destruction of the wall (the joramum's horn) Asshai (maybe ) Sorry for my wrong English

GRRM has written of underground volcanic shaft that reaches Winterfell but not the location of volcanoes in the North. Perhaps the source can be found at the Northern edge of the Frostfangs and the Haunted Forests. Hopefully Jon Snow survives and is able to use these volcanoes as a resource where the Valyrians only found their “Doom”.
