No, you were correct. The Targaryen’s were in fact a major house in Valyria. There were 1000s of noble family’s living in the Valyrian Freehold (such as the Velaryon’s and Celtigar’s) and only 40 of them possessed dragons. Nobody really knows exactly where the Targaryens fit in that 40 because it has never been specifically mentioned by the author. the only Information we have is that they were not among the most powerful of the dragon lords. They were still part of the ruling elite.
Just a note for the Baratheons, they were not only the allies of the Targaryen’s in the beginning, but they were also distantly related to one another. Half brothers or cousins, were Aegon the Conquer, and the Lord Baratheon, at the time; I can’t quite recall which. But it’s part of the reason why the Baratheon’s are so hot blooded. 1:25
Arya killed "every Frey who means a damn thing" so their legacy is at the very least uncertain. If there were any Freys left I imagine Edmure would end their line as payback for kidnapping him.
House Tully is a good testament to how a house can survive without necessarily being the strongest, through a bit of guile, a lot of diplomacy and a habit to always be a second-tier "major" house.
Torhen Stark bent the knee out of fear of the Long Night, not fear of dragons. He wisely sought out the Dragon Kings as allies against the horrors beyond the Wall.
I like when he said “Those who did critique him (Tohren Stark) were only able to be alive to do so because of Tohren's Actions” Wolf Starks are “House Of Honourables” for a Reason💯
Correction, House Hightower are still around in the main series, they just don't play a major role in the story other than Mace Tyrell's wife, who is a Hightower.
You might want to read Fire and Blood. Some of the house descriptions were incorrect or incomplete. Like Orys Baratheon took the sigil and land from House Durrandon when he captured Storms End. House Tyrell didnt become prominent 'over a period of time', they got prominent almost overnight when Aegon I destroyed the line of House Gardener and made Tyrells the protector of the Reach, House Arryn would never have contended against dragons as Visenya and her dragon got Arryn's fealty in a single day when she showed the Arryns how vulnerable their sky fortress was to dragons. And these are just a few.
My knowledge is limited, but I recall hearing someone say that house Hightower is still around during the events of GoT but their standing had falling considerably. Enjoyed the video, learned a good amount from it.
their standing hasnt fallen at all!! they are one of the richest and most important family in westeros, except for the royal families/a few other main houses it basically doesnt get better than marrying a hightower! Old Town is one of the largest city, a cultural point and the cleanest city in westeros + the hightowers can gather a large army faster than any other family in the reach and have a strong naval strengh. And for further info Dany recalls them as being a loyal house since they supported her father in the rebellion, very cool house Another fact: Ser Gerold Hightower (the white bull) was the commander of king aerys' kingsguard!
@@vbb2076They are still powerful but are much less relevant, mainly because the current Lord Hightower spends most of his time locked up in the Hightower
They are still very powerful. They can gather "6000 Swords without conscripting men from Old Town". Which makes them one of the most militarily powerful Non-Great House.
House Lannister is descendents of Lan the Clever thus making them a First Men house. Down he line one of the Lannister kings only had daughters so his eldest daughter married into an Andal House but their origin still remains as a house that originated from First Men during Age of Heroes.
Just finished watching your video and was expecting to see a lot of views and subscribers. I even was going to go see the other videos you mentioned in the end. Then i realised you are a new channel and the video was posted 11 hours ago lol. Great video, keep it up!
2:16 Stannis isnt dead in the books, and he has put in writing that jf anything happens to him, he wants his very much trueborn, legitimate daughter Shireen to take the throne in his stead...
At around 16:50, that is not House Baelish's sigil, it's more of a personal symbol of Littlefinger. The House's sigil is the Titan of Braavos on a green backdrop
So to sum up: Targaryen - Romans Baratheon - Scotland Stark - Sweden Lannister - England Tyrell - France Arryn - Austria/Lotharingia Martell - Spain Greyjoy - Faroe Islands/Isle of Man Tully - Germany Bolton - Finland Frey - Denmark Mormont - Iceland Tarly - Wales Baelish - Luxembourg Hightower - Byzantium
Here's some trivia about House Arryn that seems to always fly under fans' radar. There seems to be a trend throughout ASOIAF history where the main branch of House Arryn goes extinct, and the lordship (previously kingship) passes to the lord's first, second, or third cousin.
house hightower is still around and the rulers of oldtown during the main series. margaery and loras' mother is alerie hightower. jorah mormont's ex wife was alerie's sister, lynesse hightower. their father has a lot of heirs so i don't think they're going away any time soon
honestly props to george for coming up with all of this, but more importantly, on all the BOY names he came up with. it's so hard coming up with masculine names yet george was able to come up with THOUSANDS of original names for his characters
Didn’t Arya kill all the Frey’s at the dinner as payback for the Red Wedding. Also we since the Game of Thrones ended without an Epilogue,we don’t really know for certain if all of the houses are extinct, because there may be a cousin or other relative out there we didn’t know about. Since the knight watch is done, are we sure Samwell didn’t inherit his family kingdom?
I wanted to discuss the Houses that had a pretty prominent role in Game of Thrones, or at least the show, since I have yet to read the books, and also only one House from House of the Dragon, so I unfortunately wasn’t able to cover the Velaryons here. They are such a great House though
bro mentioned house frey, bolton, mormont, tarly and bealish and failed to mention house royce when they were more than qualified to be on the list, they were the bronze kings and high kings of the vale and mountain during andal invasion, they were old, they possessed an ancestral valerian steel sword"lamentation" and were most likely second most powerful house in vale after house arryn.
I like when he said “Those who did critique him (Tohren Stark) were only able to be alive to do so because of Tohren's Actions” Wolf Starks are “House Of Honourables” for a Reason💯
Please do a part 2 where you mention some other houses such as the ones that went destroyed such as some of the houses in house of dragons and a few more smaller once and such house Tarth
Jorah’s redemption arc is fascinating of how he was exiled for being a slave trader and then he helped Daenerys free countless slaves. I wonder if George R.R. Martin had abolitionist John Newton in mind when he created Jorah’s character.
House Bronn comes to prominence 400 years later during the Aryaos Revolutionay War. The Westeros colonists who moved there took issue with the King. House Bronn won key battles that led to victory. Unfortunately, by that time the power of the great Houses was in deep decline with the rise of Parliament. After another 150 years a benevolent Queen and Parliament finally gave the colonists independence. The new nation was called The United States Of Aryaos.
Baratheon is a lose house, but not lose blood since Gendry Baratheon is a real son of Robert Baratheon. Thats not important if he is bustard or not even he's mother is only an ordinary worker, Cat introduce to Gendry that he is Baratheon while Gendry didnt interest to be a royalties he is happy to he's life as a carpenter a worker and a mason creating a weapons for Stark House.
House Stark Represent Jon Snow is my GOAT as well Lady Sansa also House Stark is similar to House Atreides both were tragically fractured but rose from the Ashes with Surviving members.
Should be noted that House Bolton is the only valyrian steel-owning house that doesn't have an ancestral valyrian steel sword like most other great houses, instead, they have a valyrian steel flaying dagger that they pass down from generation to generation.
I thought you were literally gonna explain / cover every house that there is in GOT universe, but was kinda dissapointed. I my self think the coolest house is Dondarion. They have cool castle, maybe the best logo i've seen, their armor is cool looking, and their men are honorable + I think their blood has some magical elements running thru it.
All Majors Houses of Westeros during the rule of the Targaryen Dynasty : House Targaryen House Velaryon House Martell House Dayne House Baratheon House Lannister House Reyne House Tyrell House Hightower House Greyjoy House Stark House Manderly House Tully House Frey House Blackwood House Bracken House Arryn House Royce
From what i understand Dorne basically abandoned their cities and hid in the desert mostly relying on guerilla tactics to pester any who tried to move in and rule. Personally i wouldnt call watching your cities burned to the ground as "unbroken". Couple that with the fact that they are worse than the Vale at "sitting back and waiting for a winner". Just my thoughts, no problem with Dorne. Just feel if i was one of the other houses listening to them bragging about being "independent" id think yeah you buried your head in the sand and watched your cities burned to the ground. Least we tried to fight.
House frey will live on but its name will get forgotten. Unless one his daughter caries the name it will die out, since arya made sure to personally kill all of his sons.
Hey could you add sources/artists to the images youre using, especially those that arent from the show. No credit is just stealing, but also Id love to check out some the artists of the work shown
Ageon flew his dragon balereon to the vale and landet in their courtyard as a display of power. He did not even need to send any forces to conquer the castle. Everyone knew this ans surrendered immidiatly, so there wouldn't be hard for him in any way to conquer the eeryie. Dude would have just dracarys the living hell outta castle, stone, soldiers and citizens.
