In this video, I rank the Halo campaigns from best to worst. I don't count spinoffs like Halo Wars or Spartan Assault, just the FPS games from Bungie and 343.
Obviously, this video is just my opinion and y'all can feel free to share yours as well.
Next up on the channel: another speedrun video.

I'm a big fan of Halo: Reach, I just love the sandbox with the armour abilities, the diverse weapons and enemies. The Brutes have a solid place in the sandbox and get around the shield issue by having armour lock. All the Covenant have really strong visuals, like difference between Jackals and Skirmishers. I love the story of Reach getting slowly overrun. Also has my favourite weapon, the Needler Rifle. But really all the Bungie Halos are good, I have a soft spot for Reach but they're all fantastic.

Something interesting to note about Halo CE's balance. For CE Bungie went through the game and fine-tuned every single enemy encounter for each of the 4 difficulties. Tuning behaviour, spawns, how many enemies etc. As opposed to Halo 2 where the development was rushed and they just gave the enemies more health and damage the higher the difficulty, hence the infamous sniper jackals.

My favourite is Halo Reach. The missions felt unique from the other games, the gameplay felt fun for me but I can see how others wouldn't like it as much. One thing I love about CE is the aura of mystery around it, especially in the first half. What is this ring? Who built it? Why was it built? What secrets does it contain? Even though I know the answers to those questions, that feeling of mystery isn't diminished for me. Plus the vast majority of it actually takes place on a Halo so there's that lol

Me and my BFF played through every Bungie-developed Halo game on Legendary last month, and we saved Halo 2 for last because we knew it was by far the hardest, so we considered it the "final boss" of our Halo marathon. We both thought it was going to be extremely frustrating, especially with Iron skull automatically on, and I figured we'd probably just give up at some point. But, no, it turned out to be the absolute most fun we have ever fucking had playing Halo together. Forcing both of you to survive until the next checkpoint means you HAVE to play tactical as hell, and it really tests your bond as both friends and teammates. It was so much fun it made me curious what the rest of the games are like in Iron co-op, but we're pretty Halo'd out right now.

A weird thing about ODST, if you use mod tools you can make weapons silent by literally checking a box. Meaning you can play through ODST with actually silenced weapons with somewhat decent stealth. It's odd to me thst bungie never took that option.

Nah. The ar, plasma rifle, sniper and rockets all have a place. In particular, the ability to quick camo super fast with the plasma rifle is big as well as being able to drain shields and slow enemies. Ar is good for flood levels to get rid of popcorn flood and also for generally finishing off enemies (and double melee). Sniper and rockets I think speak for themselves
@mehemynxm6974
@mehemynxm6974 11 месяцев назад
It has the most balanced sandbox in the series and it's not even close. Nothing conflicts with another weapons role. Pistol: precision weapon, very powerful, the utility weapon of the game Assualt rifle: good source of ballistic damage for enemies like the grunts and the flood, it also has the fastest melee speed. Incentives it's role as what you swap to after breaking a shield or in close quarters. Shotgun: very powerful weapon, but has a long reload, shorter clip size and very slow melee. Also has less prevalent ammo Sniper: outclasses the pistol in range and damage. But, like the shotgun, very slow melee and also useless against flood (though that is afaik an accident) Rocket Launcher: limited ammo but incredibly powerful. Has no competition in the game, unlike in later entries. Plasma pistol: a perfect compliment to the pistol, take time to charge and are rewarded with stripped shields, but the battery charge means you have to constantly look for replacements Plasma rifle: allows for a more sustainable shield stripper, while also having a decent melee. As well as slowing down enemies hit by it's projectiles. Needler: probably the least fitting in terms of a defined role, it has a high investment for a big payoff. But that means you burn through ammo fast.
@hayds1177
@hayds1177 11 месяцев назад
@@mehemynxm6974 all of that is irrelevant when the pistol can do majority of those jobs
@mehemynxm6974
@mehemynxm6974 11 месяцев назад
@@hayds1177 it can't? It's far worse at fighting flood infection forms. It strips shields slower, it doesn't slow enemies or help with power ups and it doesn't have as fast a melee. All of this is exacerbated as you go higher in difficulty. Particularly with skulls. Halo 2 and 3 have far worse sandboxes. Literally everything in 3 dies in 1 melee or a few BR bursts. And halo 2 has complete reliance on the BR as well.

I think Halo CE is a little boring but damn, they really nailed the gunplay right in the first game. Every gun has it's use and they all feel great to shoot and have good sound design. And the way the enemies react, with their cartoonish animations and screams. Love it. And i love the library. I can never get enough of blasting swarms of flood with frag grenades and shotgun fire. Halo 2's campaign is awesome. There is so much variation in the levels and pretty much all the encounters are structured excellently. The music is great. Graphics feel like a bit of a downgrade from CE, but still nice to look at. I don't really like Halo 3's campaign all that much. It's jarring playing it right after Halo 2, as the story is so paper thin. I think that's the worst sin of Halo 2, it's cliffhanger right before the intended conclusion made it impossible to create a satisfying third game. Also, Arbiter has been reduced to serve as MC's boring sidekick. Just what the hell, man. And the level Cortana. Ugh.
@DrWalterBennett
@DrWalterBennett 11 месяцев назад
The most offensive thing to me with Halo 3 was Arbiter being hella sidelined. I seriously don't understand the decision. You don't just make the best character in the series and give him an awesome character arc and proceed to not use him at all in the next game aside from one scene and being a co-op player. Really stupid. Perhaps Halo 3's campaign would've felt better paced if Arbiter had his own levels and was separated from the chief for most of the game and had his own journey to go on before it all culminating in the end. Probably would've made the first half of the game much more fun.

Every gun has its use? Bro, the Assault Rifle fires in a damn CONE. It's okay against Grunts and Jackals. But the Magnum can one shot those guys on ANY difficulty. It sucks at crowd control, it's basically got the same effective range as the Shotgun, it's not particularly great against Elites, it's pointless against Hunters, it's kinda fine for killing Sentinels but you almost never fight them, it has a massive damage nerf against the Flood (to protect the Shotgun, which would still be much better anyways), it has awful damage per shot, and the damage per second would be great if only you could actually consistently HIT things at a range greater than 5 meters. CE's Magnum acts as a much better all around weapon in pretty much every way. Every weapon absolutely doesn't have a place. Half of them are never worth trading for because they're either pointless shadows of another weapon (Plasma Rifle is just a less flexible full auto Plasma Pistol that is worse at its one job of bringing down shields) or so ultra specific that it's almost never worth picking up over the Shotgun, Magnum, or Plasma Pistol (Sniper Rifle doesn't kill Flood at all, is harder to use against Hunters than the Magnum, is fairly rare, is hard to use effectively at close range, doesn't seem to hurt Sentinels unless aimed down on sights for some unknowable reason, and is only particularly useful against Elites without the Tilt skull on).

I dont think thats necessarily true. Are the campaigns playable without prior lore knowledge? Yes. I will give you that. But there's still a ton of blanks that are filled in with regards to the original trilogy if you read the lore. I think the biggest one is why the covenant are trying to kill us at all, which isnt really explained in the games. The books expand on the political and religious motovations behind the prophets which makes Truth's actions in the games seem way less shallow and "huh that came out of nowhere". They also really raise the stakes, because in the games it never really feels like humanity is on its last legs, but lore wise, humanity is basically wiped out besides earth and youre at the end of the war.

Halo CE just has such good enemies and gunplay. It’s really amazing how much they did with so little. I think it really came down to the dynamic play of the AI. Each enemy is unique and acts differently. Really there are only a few things I would change about the enemies for legendary. Halo 2 enemies are way to spongy (elite ultra, brutes, combat forms) or laser beam accuracy (sniper jackles, and rocket flood). Halo 3 suffers from way too hard vehicle combat, bad telegraphing of grunt grenades, and making the flood pure forms too accurate and tanky (in the case of the turret kind and the tank forms. Also I always felt like it forced you to rely on power weapons way too much. Halo ODST honestly fixed a lot wrong with halo 3 and I tend to enjoy it more, but the lack of regeneration and the slowness of the character makes for some binds in combat. Also hunters are fearsome monsters at times. Halo Reach is bungies most busted game. The extreme bloom of every weapon was just too much. I feel like this game was finished entirely and then they added the horrendous bloom. Elites, skirmishers, and bugs all dodge like crazy. Grunts and brutes often wear helmets. This slows combat to a crawl. Add to this that elites have a one hit melee, brutes armor lock to both grenades and needler, there’s a lot of very slow combat. Halo 4 and 5 are just not even worth mentioning. Halo infinite has pretty good legendary. Honestly I really enjoyed the boss fights. I think my bigger problem was just the lack of variety in environments, the lack of an epic story or development or many characters and how the game feels a little drawn out. Basically despite each encounter being a little different they’re just isn’t a compelling reason to do stuff. Why are you fighting the banished? Because they’re going to wipe out humanity? Who? You, the pilot and Cortana 2.0? You meet nobody else in this game. There’s no story to any of the side quests. Sure halo CE didn’t have many characters but you had the flood to give the game a change in pace. I know people complained about halo 5 and it’s 70 characters with no development, but halo infinite has no characters. Compare this to halo 2 with arbiter, the 3 prophets, tarterous, shipmaster, maranda, Johnson, the Cornel, and two dozen scripted interactions where the characters felt like they had personality. And this wasn’t even an open world game. What they should have done for halo infinite is had quest-givers- maybe laskey, arbiter, buck, Halsey, maybe the new oracle. Created some factions with unique enemies. A game climax where all the powers fight it out. They probably should have taken a borderlands style approach to these interactions where you hear them over the radio. The Weapon could have commented on each one and generally handled the interactions while Chief stuck to his classic one liners. The lack of a compelling narrative in the game makes me want to puke.
@araknidude

What's most frustrating to me about Infinite's campaign is that it's fucking unfinished. They couldn't make the game or its DLC on time because they wanted to have DLC campaign updates where they showed the next step in the story: fight the Endless, and a revitalized Banished under Atriox, and there's teaser shit about the Guardians, hell, there's a Flood cameo. Honestly I actually like Infinite more than it deserves, i think the gameplay loop is really solid and the multiplayer is a lot of fun, and seeing the Chief get honest-to-God character development where he shows his humanity and his willingness to sacrifice for his fellow man and the mourning for Cortana that he's desperately trying to cover up is amazing and delicious. It's just frustrating to see 343's management shit the bed so hard time and time again.

Strangely I would say that the reason halo CE's gunplay in the campaign is the best in the whole series I think is probably because xbox live wasn't a thing and competitive multiplayer wasn't really a big focus or selling point. More like something to do with your friends. Weapoons from 2 onwards have to be balanced for multiplayer which means that they cannot be insanely overpowered and with crazy amounts of ammo like in CE, which means that the guns feel a lot lamer during the campaigns. And so the magnum was never the same, the shotgun was never the same, the rocket launcher and so on....

Bro Halo 2’s campaign just isn’t that good. The level/encounter design is the worst of the original trilogy, the elite AI has been nerfed, and almost every Arby level sucks. Even the vaunted story is mostly just ok. I’d argue Halo CE even does story better by just having a cool setting and introducing you to it.

I wonder how your list would be if you took story into account, even though you said your not that into it. My list includes the story so it would be like below. some context about me: I played halo CE first when it came out in 2002 in NZ (we go it a little later than the US), loved it been my favourite franchise since. I was 7 at the time. Although I've ranked the first 3 here they are essentially all the same for me, but if I had to choose which i like the most this is it. 1.Halo 3 ( best game pay of all halos for me, wish it was more difficult, levels are incredibly unique, never felt like anything was repeated) 2.Halo2 ( awesome story but the level design is a bit worse than 3 id say) 3.Halo CE ( classic ) 4.ODST ( great story/ and missions are very unique in style since its from the other characters perspectives. game play would've been nice if it was more difficult) 5.Reach/Infinite (tied, since Im not a fan of how reach plays, but Im a fan of the story/levels. and infinite has a good story but not the best levels) 6.Halo 4 (would be much higher if only considering story, but the levels just kinda such) 7.Halo 5 (levels are not as bad as 4 but the story and game play just turn me off this game)

I love the point that Halo 3 rarely repeated. I can think of like one time and that was one of the better done “backtrack but this time fighting the flood not the covenant” levels. (Off the top of my head only 343 guilty spark is better and that was 1 level not two back to back levels)

I’ve been watching lots of Halo games ranking videos recently, and I’m honestly astonished that so many younger players recognize & appreciate the awesomeness & 30 seconds of fun over and over again of HALO1! I wrongly thought that only older players that were already adults or at least teens when the game was first released would fully discern its greatness.

343 suffers from caring too much about the story. They essentially try to make an entire halo universe to compete with every other pop franchise getting a big interconnected universe. The problem is not only is the universe not very fun, but it’s also something you are forced to digest if you want to properly understand any other part of it. They basically wanted to make the MCU of gaming.

Just returned to Halo series with the MCC. Not really an FPS person at all, but loved playing the (admittedly flawed) Gearbox port of CE to the PC and I remember reading up on a load of the lore in the time just before Halo 3 came out. I think the variety of opinions on ranking the various campaigns really speaks to how good the series on the whole is. CE is definitely my top as well. I think a lot boils down to which game you played first. I agree the backtracking isn't great, but I actually think finishing on the Pillar of Autumn works well. Two Betrayals is the worst offender for that, but I do like how the mission opens up some areas which you don't see in the first run through. For a backtrack, it's not a badly done one. I really do love the freedom of movement and approach, particularly in levels such as Silent Cartographer which for me is one of the best in the series. Maybe I'm missing something on the dialogue, because folks seem to be complaining about it, but I never had an issue. The weapon toolbox is small, but that does mean each weapon nicely fits into its own role without too much overlap with another weapon. Story wise, I honestly think it's the best in the series. Second place is hard, and I think would depend exactly what you're talking about. ODST is probably the game I was most surprised by actually loving for the way it told the story, and while I agree it plays more like a squishy spartan than an actual ODST, I really loved the characters. I also quite enjoyed Reach, and actually enjoyed the gameplay all the way through, although I didn't really feel much attachment to the characters. Seems like it was trying to do ODST, but doesn't quite do it as well with the character development. On the other hand, Reach has elites. I'd probably prefer ODST's story, and Reach's gameplay. Halo 2 does a much better job of expanding the Halo universe after CE, playing as the Arbiter is very fun, although I did find it to drag in parts. Halo 2 also drops quite a bit of the open approach to levels CE has and instead has quite a few forced elevator and gondola rides which is a downgrade. There are a few story beats which feel a bit off towards the middle / end of the game, but I think it otherwise has a great story. Halo 3 recaptures a lot of that open feel, but it did sometimes feel like 'how many vehicles can we throw into this section of the game' at times, and I feel the weapon toolbox was getting a little over complex. Enjoyable once we get to the Ark, and some very nice callbacks to the earlier games, but the earlier stuff was simply good, not amazing. Not having Arbiter sections is a bit sad. Story is probably the weakest of original trilogy, and I agree fighting Brutes is not as fun as Elites. Also Cortana.....not as bad as I expected, but yes it's not great. I think from a technical standpoint probably one of the best games, but I don't think I loved it as much as CE, 2 or even Reach. Four wasn't awful, but for me it is weaker than the Bungie era games. Having doors actively closed behind me so I can't go back to get stuff, and the introduction of what I felt was a not great new enemy and weapon variety was a let down. I did quite enjoy fighting with human and covenant weapons and they had a nice 'weight' to them. I felt the best levels were those with no or minimal Promethean presence. Can't speak to 5 and Infinite, but it sounds like 5 is worth a miss in any case. CE > ODST > Halo 2 > Reach > Halo 3 >> Halo 4 is the order I'm going with based on how much I enjoyed them.

Incredibly satisfying to hear your commentary on Halo 3. May be unpopular but I think Halo 3s campaign is straight garbage until the Ark. Cortana sucks as well. What I think is fascinating about Halo 4's Del Rio rage scene is that at the time everyone (both in and outside of the game) was hating on him for it and then 10 years later 343 decided to give that scene a completely new tone where Del Rio could have saved billions of people if Chief, Lasky or Palmer had actually followed his orders.

But the real flaw was the gameplay still, very hard to play this without sighing every 2 minutes. not to mention the artstyle was very bad. For H5, the only thing that saved it was the gunplay and the multiplayer IDEAS, not what they did with it. But i had fun on warzone sometimes so... I guess. Still, the story sucked. and the artstyle still shitty. Oh boy am i in trouble for this one... Reach never really got to me like it got to most of people. Dont get me wrong i really like reach, its a good game to come back sometimes, especially with the mods and the customization (the best in the series btw) The game is just not better than the other ones imo For Halo CE, i just played it too much, and it does not hold up from the next ones but i love it for real. Halo infinite was a blast. I really loved the gameplay, the characters were very good, and despite the open world being very... Samey, it was very fun to explore. I love the new guns, i love the artstyle, i love everything except for the multiplayer. Halo 3 odst is just about ambience. It's not about being a badass green boi, its about surviving and finding ur teammates around mombasa. I love this game. Halo 3 is just pure perfection, next. Halo 2 was my childhood game, it just blast my mind when i was 5 and i played it, and to this day is the campaign i replay the most out of all. Strange question, but with the MCC when playing Halo CE I noticed certain missions when fighting the Flood that if you stand in one spot and don’t push through they’ll just continuously keep coming (specifically the mission Keyes is where I noticed this). Did anyone else notice this? I totally understand why people rank 5 last, but for me 4 is last because it is 4 that ruins the lore. In fact I kind of like how 5 tries to retcon parts of the story that 4 messed up, such as actually explaining what was going on with the covenant more than not at all. I would also respect the rampancy storyline way more if it didn't make Cortana completely change her character for some reason. Chief also acts completely different and it just feels like such a clash from how he had been established in previous games. 4 is also way worse in terms of balancing imo. Knights are as common as elites but as strong as hunters. 5 making a new enemy type to serve as that medium enemy type and making the knights rarer vastly improved the experience. Both suck though, and most of the new characters where just complete misses.

Yes part of it is down to expectation compared to the end product, but i just didn't enjoy the combat and the story felt like it jumped many pages in terms of characters and plot. Halo 5 certainly had flaws but halo 4 in terms of gameplay almost put me to sleep. Yes a bit controversial take on the game but I'm serious, i got bored fighting the knights and the covenant got a downgrade. Halo 5 was a mess but i enjoyed the combat and levels a bit better. Halo 5 had potential. So many weapons, covenant variations and bosses that were unfortunately only exclusive to Warzone firefight.

Halo CE has a certain mechanical sturdiness to the feel of it that has lessened with each subsequent Halo game. The guns felt heavier, the physics were slower and it was as if the air was thick, the lighting primitive and analog and the equipment from a bygone era where it was all heavy and satisfying to use, a bit like an old tractor or washing machine built to last generarions and made of iron, not plastic. For that it gets my nostalgia vote. 2, 3 and Reach all on a par with each other give or take, but over the generations each Halo has become slightly less distinct, slighly more mainstream in feel until today where I doubt it would be possible to recreate the groundbreaking feel of a genre totally reworked like CE managed both feel and immersion wise. I also remember getting Halo 2 on release day in 04 (with a large guide book detailing each level and its map) and getting very in to it. Happy times!

1) Halo 2 is my favorite all around. The easter eggs and the fact that Halo 2 has, by FAR, the least amount of backtracking of the original trilogy, really do it for me. Not to mention that this game has the most memorable dialogue, characters, and overall improvements to the core Halo gameplay. The only thing I dislike about Halo 2 is the fact that the MCC is the only way to play Halo 2 Anniversary, and I wish we made a stink about it like we did about CoD Infinite being tied to MW Remastered. 2) After that is ODST, which does the thankless job of tying CE, 2, and 3 together in an isolated story that has practically nothing to do with Master Chief. It's sense of immersion, mystery, and exploration really lend themselves nicely to the balance of goofiness and light drama that I LOVE about Bungie Halo. I cannot overstate how amazing it is that they managed to make a much smaller environment than Halo Infinite, feel infinitely more diverse. I despise how Dare exists almost exclusively as a romantic interest for Buck though, and their dynamic makes me sick from start to finish. 3) Third place would go to Reach for its ability to keep the maps diverse and moving. Coming back to Reach, the biggest complaint I have is the way armor abilities aren't really improved from Halo 3. But assassinations and jetpacks are peak Halo and I will ninja anyone who disagrees. 4) In Halo CE, the first half is unique and new, filled with that sense of discovery that Halo is praised for, but the second half amounts to little more than backtracking the first half of the game, but now with the flood (an enemy that never got a chance to be fun to fight). 5) Halo Infinite has a grappling hook! Glad they dropped the Guardians plotline entirely to do a relatively inoffensive soft reboot. The open world is... severely lacking though. 6) Halo 4 exists! I don't like the dynamic between Cortana and Master Chief at all, and I don't really remember any of the other characters. It does set-pieces REALLY well for what few there actually are. 7) Halo 3 has the most contrived plot of any of the Halo games, and is practically just Halo CE with slightly higher stakes, and a plot entirely comprised of deus ex machina after machina. Nothing is resolved in a satisfying or interesting manner, and what little IS original about Halo 3, is not good. Not to mention the constant dialogue from Grave Mind and Cortana that interrupt gameplay, rather frequently, to make 0 sense. If Halo 2 was supposed to end like Halo 3, I'm glad they got split. Why did they think killing off Johnson and Miranda in the same story was a good idea? And both of them die SO ANTICLIMACTICALLY. And the flood was never a problem again- the end. 8) Halo 5: Guardians will always be the worst Halo game both in and out of its campaign. and with supremely good reason. It's boring at its best, and a culmination of all of Halo's worst elements at its usual. The only bossfight is a bad one, and they reuse it OVER AND OVER AND OVER. Not to mention the absolute HYPE they were building around this game, but looking back, the only memorable moment in that game is the slow motion fistfight cutscene between Locke and Chief, and it's not memorable because it's a good fight. (It's also not actually in slow motion...)

I like Infinite. It shows 343 has promise, it plays like a Bungie halo. I agree that the environments need more variety, but I never really saw it as a problem. Playing on Legendary I find the combat pretty balanced, you are easier to take down but it still isn't too hard to take out banished. The boss fights to play pretty well and I like how they make you use the new gear you get throughout the campaign. I personally like the open world, and exploring the ring me feels kind of like the second mission in CE, in an open environment, and you have your tools, objectives, and a means to move around, it feels like a sandbox. I love running around the ring in a giant warthog and saving marines to get them to join my squad. I never feel bored as theirs always something to do, take out a target, clear a fob, save marines, or play the story. It has problems hats for sure and it's not a perfect game, but I think it's evidence enough that 343 can make good games and I hope this can be a stepping stone for Halo to get back to its golden age. I don't think its better than any of the Bungie games, Ill always love reach and ODST, but its good in my opinion.

What killed Halo Infinite was its live service, seeing it's the norm for games like these nowadays. I thought the campaign was pretty bland and convoluted some times, and the environment was really tiring without variety, but one thing you're right is that it damn wellplays like a Bungie Halo. It's in the feel. It feels like a Bungie Halo, even if a fever dream version of it
