Every "Looney Tunes" Reviewed (Part 10) 

2:33: So through out the whole run that Pepe was in; it's not him who has a problem; It's people hating him who has a problem, by comparing him to Alex from a Clockwork Orange. 5:20: I'll admit, this cartoon definitely has an issue with how it's paced. If it were a SpongeBob cartoon (like when Squidward joins SpongeBob for a house party during a storm), the extra minutes would've helped add more gags; but seeing that those shorts back then were dropped from 9 minutes to 7-6 minutes, it wasted all the precious time of being humorous by overexplaining everything. At least with Chuck Jones, when he did Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, or Tom and Jerry, he let's the visuals do the talking, and that their character expressions can interpret anything the audience thinks they said. 5:48: Funny thing about this short, I heard that originally, the story would've ended with the titular "Martian" stay with beatniks in Greenwich Village... also, where the Martian is from is suppose to be Mars (most likely in a similar fashion as the Mars in "Hare-Way to the Stars"). 7:19: Funny thing about "Devil's Feud Cake", it became part of the "Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie", retitled as "Satan's Waitin" (yes, the same name as the Tweety Short), but there's a few differences between the short and the extended sketch: First of all, the shorts used in the LLLBBM version are mostly longer than in the DFC short. Second, rather than start with "Hare Lift", the LLLBBM version begins with "Hare Trimmed", which led to Sam being killed by Bugs on purpose with a Safe (compared to the original "Devil's Feud Cake", where Sam's death was his own fault for getting a backpack that wasn't a parachute). Later on in the LLLBBM version, Sam is given another chance after the Arab episode; by being a Cowboy again, which starts "Wild and Woolly Hare", which, after failing the final time, is where Sam decides Satan can get Bugs himself. 9:22: I love this short! Treg Brown's magnum opus! There's a "Sound ReDesign" version by Daphne Farazi, if you want to see the story with different sound effects. 10:10: The final Sam & Ralph short, and yeah, it is poetic; goes to show how much they've grown. It felt as if Ralph still has issues in the chase, but despite their shift, Sam would be there to help Ralph... the ending made it feel like they're past all that, and have matured since then. 10:49: I believe this short was probably intended to be viewed in "the Bugs Bunny Show", because they have a tendency to treat their stage as a vaudeville act. For example, at the start of "Bad Time Story", Bugs shows off cartoon logic and how it works, before he gets into the "Bewitched Bunny" short. Also, I bet this is where Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog got the idea of making Sonic and Robotnik act like Bugs Bunny and Wile E. Coyote respectively. 11:51: Easily the best way to end Rocky and Mugsy's cartoon outing. 12:25: I actually enjoyed this when I was a kid; mostly because, what little I saw from it from the first time I saw the footage, it was in "How Bugs Bunny Won the West". 13:01: Remember when I said Chuck Jones knew the importance of pantomiming? Forget I said that. 13:32: Sylvester would later promote "9 Lives" cat food, after seeing him sing about "Pussy Kins Cat Food". 13:59: Actually, I take back what I said about the Mars Hare one; Jones definitely works best when he finds the right people to make good pacing. The atmosphere lets it all sink in, and allows to give us some good processing. 14:23, 23:56 27:26, : It used the Milt Franklyn score rather than the Bill Java score; I gotta say, the Bill Java version doesn't sound as cool as Milt's; I felt that a "Milt Franklyn" variant would've given "To Beep or Not to Beep" a 10/10. 15:27: The fact that Speedy would allow Sylvester to do this feels like a win for the both of them. 15:58: What your saying about the "character development" for the short? I think it reminds me of Tex Avery's "The Cat Who Hated People", in which the first half shows a cat who had a bad experience with people; can't get milk, can't serenade at the fence, kids tying paper bags on the cat's feet, the cat gets beaten up by a baby, scratching the sofa gets the cat punished, gets framed by Dog who beats the cat up, keeps forgetting to let the cat out, and ends up having their mating seasons cut short. The Cat decided to send himself to the Moon, so he can get peace and quiet; but then found out the Moon is full of "Lunacy" (rimshot), so the Cat decided to go back to Earth, and loved people since then. Don't know how a Dog hating wheels is any worse than that, if it's a similar story but with a different outcome. 17:05: Hooray for Tazboy! Started off good, ended off good; no wonder he's considered a major player in the Looney Lineup; I saw "Taz: The Quest for Burger", it's a cute story about Taz helping a young bandicoot girl rescue her father from a group of Dingos, and Taz being rewarded Veggie Burgers for a noble deed. After all, you can't fight on an empty stomach. 17:56: Yeah, even Bugs points out what he's referring to, adding "Invisible Shield, you know", after Daffy crashes into the Icy Wall. 25:20, 28:35, 29:03, 29:26, 33:28, 34:40, 35:43, 37:09, 38:04, 39:13, 40:52, 41:00, 41:15, 41:41, 42:42, 43:32, 44:09, 45:06, 45:22, 45:58, 46:38, 47:17, 48:47, 51:38, 52:43: To think the Daffy/Speedy Dynamic would later return in the 2012 Looney Tunes Show. Sidenote for "Daffy Rents": The Robot in that short ends up being the Final Boss for Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday for the SNES (and Daffy controls the Robot). 29:52: Wow, a Daffy cartoon where he suffers, and it's actually funny? Who would've thought? 30:46, 42:12: Seems that Bob McKimson does better with Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote than Rudy Larriva. 31:09, 32:13, 32:48, 33:56, 34:22, 35:07, 35:23, 36:13, 36:36, 37:38, 38:38: Case and Point. 39:39: Yeah, the reusing animation of Witch Hazel with Speedy's voice over it, and Daffy turning into the Duck Amuck creature for no reason other than Nostalgia, are very petty. 49:33: Cartoon Special indeed; now I feel like checking out that short. 53:59: Monty Python this ain't. 54:34: And people say Inky is a terrible character. 56:09: To think this would've been made into a series of shorts. 48:25: 49:18, 52:20, 55:46, 56:42: I guess it's a matter of a good concept with a bad execution. 54:56, 55:23: Imagine having a TV series with those guys. 47:56, 51:16, 52:01, 53:38, 57:09, 57:39: And I end my commentary by saying "Riddle me this: What Cool Cat is worse? A Cool Cat that tries to keep the audience interested (Looney Tunes), or a Cool Cat that insults the audience through bad advice (Derek Savage)?"

Some of these were okay, but i'm glad they bring back the older sound effects that they haven't used since the 40's like the sounds that were later used in Paramount Cartoons, and i do love the "No free pictures!" joke use it to block out a bad LT cartoon, but the 1967-1969 era is no good, they copied Hannah Barbera cartoons heck they even use the Hannah Barbera sound effects, come on WB if you want the LT shorts to be animated at Hannah Barbera, tell them before they died years later. And i do prefer Chuck E Cheese better than Merlin, but i'll give him credit since he was Chuck E Cheese prototype due to the design or color, And Cool Cat is just a rip-off of Snagglepuss and his other Pink friend, Pink Panther, the seven arts era is even worst than the 1933-1936 era of Looney Tunes.

"Tease for Two" with the Goofy Gophers and Daffy especially feels like a Chip 'N Dale short. Not a very good one though.

And Tex Avery's MGM cartoons too.

I feel that the 2 out of ten for Tokio Jokio was because it's a wartime cartoon and a lot of the badness comes from being extremely dated. "Too nice" would be giving "Angel Puss" a 5 out of ten, despite the general consensus among Looney Tunes fans is that it's the worst Chuck Jones cartoon ever, but what's that make Good Night Elmer? Chopped liver? Do any of the Sniffles cartoons before Lost and Foundling and Hush My Mouse not count? People toss around "worst [whatever] ever so much, it's lost all meaning. I prefer to do what The Hick Critic does and judge each cartoon by its merits (or the childhood nostalgia bias for most of the 1950s shorts, because I remember seeing 95% of them on Saturday morning TV, the occasional weekday afternoon show, and, of course, Cartoon Network back when it aired Looney Tunes cartoons, as well as the Popeye shorts, Tom and Jerry cartoons from all three eras [Hanna/Barbera, Gene Dietch, and Chuck Jones], and the MGM shorts done by either Rudolf Ising or Tex Avery).

@@canaisyoung3601 Just because Tokio Jokio is historical, that does NOT excuse how bad it is. While the Censored Eleven are considered racist nowadays, they were accepted for their time, and the racism is not intentional since those shorts just have outdated social views. Tokio Jokio, on the other hand, is really disrespectful to Asian culture and has the intention of making fun of Asians, internationally racist if you know what I mean.

Same here. I love the Scarlet Pumpernickel. An 8 out of 10 is fine with me, but I also thought it'd be a tad higher. Also thought See You Later Gladiator would be one of the shorts you gave a rare 1 to.

I can put up with him having basic hot takes on the Looney Tunes cartoons, but that voice of his is annoying (it sounds like the original voice actor for Clarence, who sadly got fired for sexual harassment caused by a mental breakdown). The Hick Critic's voice is more pleasant and I can get behind most of his opinions on the Looney Tunes cartoons.

And yet, this cartoon’s redrawn animation is actually better animated than those, since they were even choppier than these late 60’s cartoons. That doesn’t mean this cartoon is in any way good, or make them redrawing the original animation not cheap or lazy either.

I like to think they purposely wanted to make it to #1000 that’s why they went on so long

Nope, it was Mel Blanc all the way, just that it sounds a bit "off" due to him recovering from said accident. The same goes for his voices in "Devil's Feud Cake" where at times, Bugs almost sounds "bored." Yet, I think Daws Butler briefly took over voicing Barney for him in the Flintstones.

​@@glowworm2Daws Butler actually did voice Barney Rubble on The Flintstones while Mel Blanc was in the hospital. Butler's Rubble sounds dopier than Blanc's Rubble. I could swear there was one episode that started with Daws Butler voicing Barney, but switched to Mel Blanc halfway through without any sly meta-joke about the voice change (since the 1960s didn't really do that kind of humor), but I don't know what the episode was or if I'm misremembering it. Last time I saw it was as a kid in the early 1990s.

Funny thing is besides this short being somewhat of a remake of “His Bitter Half”, a Roland and Rattfink short (a lesser known DePatie-Freleng series) called “A Taste of Money” was another remake of both shorts with Rattfink in Sam and Daffy’s role. Much like how this is a Sam short without Bugs Bunny, Rattfink stars in this short without his nemesis, Roland.

It is strange that this was the only time that Sam appeared in a solo cartoon. He could have easily been adapted very well in the later 7 Arts cartoons if they wanted.

I honeslty would've gave "Rabbit Stew and Rabbits Too" A higher ranking as well I think it's a charming short with some actually decent to good gags despite the fact that many (Including my self but to a smaller degree) see it as a Wile Coyote and Roadrunner Knockoff

Oh, it is a Roadrunner and Coyote knockoff but it’s a well done one at least. The music is actually pretty good here as well for a Bill Lava score. Funny part is this was initially a pitch for a new series of shorts called Quick Brown Fox and Jack Rabbit. Sadly, the studios had to close before this series came to fruition but at least we got a fairly memorable one shot out of it.

Yeah, the original sales pitch animation cel had a totally different design for the rabbit character-named Jack Rabbit while Quick Brown Fox-who was actually brown, looked pretty much the same. I’m uncertain if the original idea for the series was for them to be silent characters or not. Honestly, the silent pantomiming worked great here and I would have loved to have seen more of these two.

Yeah, Nick never aired 'Flying Circus' because of its' German stereotypes. And it was RAPID Rabbit appearing with the Quick Brown Fox.

I started watching a bunch of those Depating-Freleng shorts back in college and immediately noticed similar plots and gags from earlier Looney Tunes shorts. Then again, there were a lot of animators, story writers and directors from the Warner Bros studio working on these later shorts, so I really wasn't that surprised. Those shorts are SO much better than the Speedy and Daffy ones though. Well, except for Hoot Kloot. I tried watching a few of those shorts and found them to be pretty bad.

@@glowworm2 I first got to see Hoot Kloot in the late '80s when TNT got ahold of the rights to The Pink Panther shorts. He kinda reminded of Gillespie from In The Heat Of The Night. I thought that the cartoon was a prequel to it or something.

Honestly, I think even if Chuck Jones stuck around, the pitifully low budgets would have restrained his creativity. I learned that he only agreed to make "Tom and Jerry" cartoons if MGM allowed him to continue with "full animation". Reportedly, the budget he was given for each short was $12,000 more than the $30,000 Warner Bros. was currently giving him.

@@evelyngomez9944 I did like some of the Gene Deitch outings, particularly "The Tom & Jerry Cartoon Kit" and "Carmen Get It".

Tom & Jerry, easily. Even the Gene Deitch ones are superior to 65% of the cartoons in Part 10.

Tom and Jerry had Chuck Jones, which was was on the reasons Looney tunes still had some quality up to 1964. Sure, his Tom and Jerry wasn't as great as the originals, but compare to the looney tunes against them, there is no debate.

@@fictionalmediabully9830 The one with the woodpecker was pretty decent too, also the wild west one, and also the cartoon titled "Buddies Thicker Than Water" ; it's mainly the ones with the abusive owner that are really not all that good at all. It's like a really worse version of the Chuck Jones' 3 Bears shorts (The RU-vidr named It's Classics pointed this out beautifully).

Executive demand. Bugs Bunny was particularly not allowed because the bosses decided there were enough Bugs cartoons to play on television.

Yeah, I caught it only after I'd already exported the video file, and didn't think the mistake was bad enough to re-export it.

My opinion on that cartoon is the opposite of yours. I'd give it 1/10. Woolen Under Where, for example, was a much better cartoon. I'd give that 8/10.

3:59 This was probably recorded around the time Mel had his car crash, it affected a lot of his voices. The short also marked the last time Milt Franklin did the music since he died during its production and Bill Lava took over with a lower budget

25:50 The reason is allegedly because WB wanted to pair up the two most popular characters from theatre and audience feedback and figured they’d make more money if they paired the two up

49:07 They redrew Witch Hazel yet did not bother filling in the chunk covered by the table in the original short , yeah you can tell the budget affected this badly

46:22 These shorts marked the start of Warner Bros using the Hanna Barbera sound library for the shorts since they had lost the rights to use the original sound effects from the classic shorts and it was cheaper to licence sound effects from another studio

One issue with that is, where exactly do the Disney shorts end? Unlike the Looney Tunes, where they were still cranking them out regularly (if half- and quarter-assedly) until the bitter end, the original Disney shorts with Mickey, Donald, etc. just kinda petered out into a series of educational films like the psychedelic "Donald in Mathemagic Land" and "Goofy's Freeway Troubles", likely due to Walt getting embittered with animation after the 1941 animators strike followed by him getting distracted by TV projects and of course Disneyland. KaiserBeamz's "One Second from Every Classic Disney Short" ends with "It's Tough to Be a Bird" from 1969 (which of course was coincidentally also the last year of Looney Tunes).

I agree with you on Rabbit Stew and Rabbits Too! I always liked that short as a kid and as an adult, it's probably one of the best of the Seven Arts shorts, which as a whole, is saying a lot as most of those shorts were clunkers. I also actually do think Goldie Locks and the Jivin' Bears deserved a higher rating as I initially saw it as trying too hard to mimic Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs, but it's actually pretty funny next to that short on the Censored 11 list. I actually have a soft spot for Crazy Cruise though and actually thought it deserved a slightly higher rating. Loved a lot of those gags--especially the animals waiting at the watering spot, the mountain goat hopping from mountain to mountain and Bugs Bunny's cameo.

I like some of Bill Lava's scores, particularly in shorts like "Now Hear This" that benefit from the minimalistic compositions and loud instrumentation; but, yeah, his contribution wasn't as strong as the previous composers.

And as for cartoons that I think you were too harsh on: "Mouse Warming" (1952) because I liked the border joke and the end bit of Claude getting tricked by the mice into playing Canasta with the bulldog and getting absolutely destroyed by him. "The Rattled Rooster" (1948) Not one of Davis' best cartoons sure, but I think it wasn't as bad as you proclaimed it to be; the absolute sheer speed of the first gag floored me on my first watch, and the French bit, the drowning bit, and the end bits with the rattlesnake were all good too imo (although I do still have to deduct points for the re-used animation for the same exact gag even though I thought it was also kind of comedically sadistic towards the rooster). "A Ham In A Role" (1949) The Review of the cartoon done by the RU-vidr Anthony's Animation Talk perfectly describes why I think you were too harsh with the cartoon. "The Unruly Hare" (1945) Even though you gave that cartoon around a 9, I still think that it deserved a 10; it felt like something Clampett would've made more than Tashlin not that I think he wasn't capable of doing so but still. "Fox Pop" (1942) I think for one of Chuck Jones' pre-dover boys shorts it actually comes alot more closer to home than most others may initially think at first; The joke about the fox escaping through the prison bars only to come back to get the key to open the cell door was really funny, and I also do love the end bit of the dogs absolutely beating the ever living stuffing out of the fox at such a quick speed. "Caveman Inki" (1950) I liked the running gag of the guy getting his tomato soup completely tarnished by the surrounding characters (even when inside a dinosaur's stomach, somehow) I like the fact that somehow the Mynah bird was able to completely able to tie up an animal MUCH bigger than him and we don't even get to see how, and for what it's worth, for Inki's last cartoon it could've been alot worse. "House Hunting Mice" (1947) For a solo Hubie and Bertie short, it's not bad, and for a remake of an older short it's definitely a lot more fast paced and the jokes are alot more hard hitting and clever imo (although I do have to deduct points from it again for not including Claude or another cat for them to go against, possibly maybe having it be to one to control the robot chasing the mice would've been a nice twist at least imo). "What Makes Daffy Duck" (1948) I felt like you could've given the cartoon a bit of a higher rating because it's probably the last time that we'd get to see Daffy at his truly screwball self. "Mexican Joyride" (1947) Deserves a 10 imo, nuff said. "Mouse Wreckers" While your reasoning of why u gave the cartoon the rating that you gave it is understandable; it stars a dynamic of one of my favorite pairs of Characters together (Hubie, Bertie, and Claude Cat), considering that you gave a similar cartoon in execution "Canned Fued" (1951) a 9/10, and the fact that it's their ONLY Oscar nomination, I think the cartoon at the very least deserves a 7/10 rating. "Dog Collared" (1950) Deserves a 10 for feeling like another long lost Clampett short similar to Rebel Rabbit. "Sugar and Spies" (1965) I pretty much explained why in my comment about the short above all this. "A Fractured Leghorn" (1950) One of the rare Foghorn shorts that doesn't feature ANY of it's main characters and instead for an old school classic rivalry chase cartoon with one of the most underrated MC.Kimson characters. "Two Gophers From Texas" (1948) Deserves a 10, period. "Oder Of The Day" (1948) By far the most unique Pepe Le Pew cartoon, and probably also one of his funniest, as I said before for both Rebel Rabbit and Dog Collared, it kinda feels like a long lost Clampett cartoon but with an Art Davis spin attached to it, deserves at least an 8 or 9 imo. And finally, "Rabbits Stew and Rabbits Too" (1969) Sure it may be a Wile.E Coyote and Roadrunner ripoff short, but at least it's a good ripoff short; it follows a couple of chuckleworthy gags, and is a nice breath of fresh air from all of those that came before and after it. Deserves at least a 7 imo. I know that you're probably not even gonna see this comment, let alone pick any of them for a re-review, but I guess it was worth a shot, anyways have a great day, and you may also wish to take a little break before you re-review some of the cartoons of the classic era of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies.

I know, right? Even HBO Max (sorry, Max) thought it sucked judging by the summary they wrote for the cartoon. But, these are the Hick Critic's opinions and if he sees something good about it, then he's allowed to say that and we, as commentors, are allowed to challenge that.

Goodnight Elmer bored me as a child. I mean Elmer is being outsmarted by a CANDLE in this short. I know Elmer wasn't the sharpest crayon in the box, but when an inanimate can defeat you, that's just sad. Also, it's insanely slow, a problem that often occurred with Jones' early shorts. The Three Stooges often had losing battles with inanimate objects but at least those were pretty quickly paced and they knew when to end the gag before it lost the audience's interest. We really didn't need an entire short where Elmer has a one-way battle with a candle for 7 minutes straight.

Conrad The Sailor is one that I wanna like just because of Daffy's presence as a whole but the whole thing is such a boring film that I can't even remember it's existence half the time

I kept turning off the TV whenever this one showed up when I was old enough to figure out that I could wait for about 7 minutes for the next short to air.

Conrad is just Claude Cat but less interesting, pilied onto it with a goofy-esc voice

I'd honestly rather watch Cool Cat or Merlin the Magic Mouse than Buddy. 🤣 I'm not touching those Speedy and Daffy shorts though.

@@glowworm2 I was quite ashamed he gave Flying Circus a 1/10, since it was one of my highlights in the saga. Certainly more funny and enjoyable than Buddy, that’s for sure.

@@thatdude6233 I actually kind of like Flying Circus myself. It's not the best, but it does remind me a bit of the Roland and Rattfink shorts. Chip and Zee is my guilty pleasure. It's got some surprisingly good Bill Lava music and the hunter is pretty funny.

@@thatdude6233 I don't like "Shamrock and Roll". That is one mean leprechaun. Not to mention, the short makes Merlin look like a fraud, whereas in the other shorts, he really does use magic at times to save his and Second Banana's bacon.
