@@cameronharrington6813 Creatures with horsemanship can't be block except with creatures with horsemanship, it's a mechanic exclusive of portal three kingdoms, but in the new knights tribal precon of MoM is a new creature that give all your knights horsemanship

every magic card can now be summed up by horsemanship or not horsemanship. Non-horsemanship cards now just mean that the ability is indeed, kicker.

The mechanics are as follows: Horsemanship (evasive abilities), Kicker (additional costs), Flashback (alternate costs), First Strike (combat abilities), Transform (includes flip cards), Split cards (includes adventure and modal DFCs), Split Second (stack-based abilities), Graft (+1/+1 counter abilities), Poison (counters on players), and Threshold (cards that are stronger if you meet a condition).

Kicker and buyback are additional costs, while cleave and overload are alternate costs.The difference comes up most when you're given the opportunity to cast a spell without paying its mana cost. In those cases, you can still pay any additional cost for extra effects, but you can't choose to pay an alternate cost.

I've heard players reference this joke for years now, and it always felt true until you get to WG value engines, like Marath, Will of the Wild and Ghave. I think if you make an exception for these super-modal and utility/toolbox type cards, you really do have every possible effect in the game in three steps. Maybe there's some rock/paper/scissors or spike/timmy/johnny wisdom hidden in there too, idk

I do like the cleave/kicker comparison because they're basically inverse. Kicker adds/changes text while Cleave removes and therefore changes text. I'd say the only difference is the kicker cost being additional while the cleave cost is just an alternate higher cost

I can't say that cycling is kicker. Kicker is paying an additional cost to alter the effect of the card being cast. Cycling would be more akin to a split card (1 mana cost for one effect and another mana cost for a different effect).

I would define kicker as pay extra mana cost for original spell + more. So cycling isn't really a kicker cause its either the card printed or cantrip. You don't get both in one.

Fortell, I’d argue, is different than kicker. You pay 2 to exit it, and then you pay a cheaper cost on a later turn. It’s similar but fortel is different enough to Warner it being different than kicker, because you don’t get a better effect for The cheaper cost.

Buyback came out before Kicker.....so kicker is just buyback. Therefore everything is just buyback. Also Horsemanship is flying. So everything is flying or buyback.

Ok but my one counterpoint: Kicker is mana added on *top* of the base cost of the card. A lot of other effects, some mentioned here, use a mana that replaces the base cost. Imo that makes it different enough from kicker. However, I will agree with the general sentiment that so many of these mechanics are just variations on kicker and it really isn’t necessary to create so many of them…

I dont think taxes are a "kicker on your oppenents card". Kicker is "pay this cost and get..", while taxes are "pay this cost or else..". Also cantrips aren't kicker. So horsemanship, kicker, cantrip, and taxes.

There is more than that though - I think some other abilities like ninjitsu are no where near kicker. I know they mentioned that in the video, but ninjitsu is actually WERID AF
