One thing I love about Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 64, is that the MK8 DX remake has a flying train with Toads throwing coins, and the conductor being Iwata’s mii. Honestly… it brings tears to my eyes seeing how they updated the track to have him shortly after his passing. A man who made millions of people’s childhoods and can never be replicated… its one of the most magical and greatest experiences in any game PERIOD…

if you didnt know, the trigger for the finish line in calamari desert extends into the train tunnel if you have a star active while inside, allowing you to complete a lap that way

Another great thing about Kalimari Desert is that it’s an almost exact replica of the Monza racetrack in Italy, which has had its country’s Formula 1 Grand Prix there almost every year since 1950. It’s an iconic track in real life, made into an iconic Mario Kart track. It’s clear that the dev team had some motorsports fans in their ranks.

I like all the city tracks and traffic themed races like Mushroom Bridge, Shroom Ridge and Moonview Highway, but this one is the only one I'm not a fan of though. The remake in MK8 is solid to say the least.

@@LiamDeege oh yeah and don’t here what I’m not saying I despise this course in MK64. The cars are too big especially in 150cc and hitting one is frankly game ruining with 64’s engine. I find traffic courses to be a bit hit and miss. Love mushroom city and Moonview in particular tho.

Yeah, I prefer this iteration of Toad's Turnpike over the Mario Kart 8 remake. Simply because the cars are much harder to dodge, making it more fun in my opinion.

I actually love Banshee Boardwalk… in DS. I’d always play it as Dry Bones riding the Banshee so I could be a Banshee on the Boardwalk. Plus, bats instantly improve everything.

Me too, the atmosphere is great and spooky. That lonely abandoned building in the middle of the expansive lake is kind of eerie once you think about it. It also serves as the true final challenge of the game

playing choco mountain is the video game representation of camping. its fun to think about doing it, its absolutely terrible doing it, but after youre done doing it you go “wow, that was so fun!” its one of those things where its so impossible and terrible that its INCREDIBLY fun

Battle Mode on Block Fort was always the best. One other thing about it that is unique to the N64 version is that green shells don't break apart after a few bounces. They keep bouncing around forever unless they hit someone/something, or the maximum number of them is reached. So as Block Fort battles go on, the bottom levels become super dangerous because of all the excess green shells floating around there.

The Koopa Troopa Beach rock I feel is how a 'namesake' should be. Just a vague resemblance, rather than something that looks exactly like what it's named after. Makes it feel like it's a piece of nature, rather than something that seems like it was carved out or something.

All of the Mario Kart ranking videos are a joy to throw onto the background when I'm at work. Schaff's generally calm narration in these videos specifically is really great to listen to while I'm plugging away at files and stuff. They're a welcome change from the usual animation-related stuff.

No, it really doesn't. The track design is bland, the orange sands do little to alleviate the visual design, and it implemented possible shortcuts so lazily. The train obstacle isn't even a good gimmick. It's barely used for the tight slips that Schaffrillas describes. It just wastes time by bringing the race to a crashing halt for most people. Hell, at some point, it just becomes irrelevant to people in 1st-3rd, and only acts as an obstacle to everyone else, all for the ultimate crime of being hit by items. It just doesn't work in 64 and 7. The background is so dull, and is only interesting due to being evening, there's nothing there. The music is so boring, the only good part is the flute, it's a failure as music in a racing game.

Wario Stadium is honestly my favorite track in this game because of how bad it is. Trying to knock your friends down the jump and frantically trying to do the shortcuts makes a chaotic multiplayer map.

Yeah, it's not _that_ ugly, all things considered. It's just a dirt track with a repeating Wario Face jpeg on the walls. And the layout reminds me the most of the Hot Wheels GBA games I grew up with, which is where I learned racing techniques. Not much is patently unfair like the snow courses or Banshee.

I’d say personally that Wario Stadium is in the same boat as Rainbow Road. It’s alright, maybe a bit dull at times but it could have so much potential if they brought it back. Imagine what they could do with the layout with all the new track mechanics that’ve been introduced over the years. Same with Banshee Boardwalk.

Fun fact, MK64 was my first Mario Kart game, because my cousin had a N64 (which might actually get given to me soon!). No one even knew drifting was possible in my family for YEARS, and I didn’t know it was a thing until my brother showed me in MK8. That same brother also informed me of drifting in MK64 years later, and I still haven’t gotten the hang of it. Also I’m only ever able to play Rainbow Road and Mushroom Cup. The rest are too difficult for me, a casual.

19:59 so funny story, years ago me and my friend were racing against each other on this course. Now he was a little bit ahead of me, but when we were about to pass the castle, I said, "The castle's actually a shortcut." So what does my friend do? He drove straight towards the castle door as I took the lead. The best part was he managed to get himself stuck as he threw down all his banana peels right behind him, thinking I was following him! I managed to get at least a full lap ahead of him. Now, was that possibly an evil thing for me to do? Maybe, but to my credit, my friend didn't have to listen to me. Best part was my step dad was watching, and he was actually backing me up! Also, isn't all fair in love and Mario Kart?

As a kid, the only two things I'd ever do in this game were occasionally play Battle Mode with family, and go into Time Trial and just explore the courses at my own leisure. I basically never touched the singleplayer GP races. Driving onto Peach's Castle in Royal Raceway really just blew my mind as a kid because it was the first time I had ever seen an area from ONE game also be in ANOTHER game. Also shoutouts to all the Machinima-style videos circa 2008 that would have Mario driving to the castle in Mario Kart 64, then hard cut to Super Mario 64 footage, lmao

The Raceway music fits Wario Stadium IMO. Really gives the energy and gusto a dirt bike stadium has.

I think Wario Stadium could be done a lot better by adding some opsycles, cut a good chunk of the track out, add some more variety with the decorations, a big Wario statue, some half pipes and gliding sections, and of course, making it in HD

Awesome. The number 1 pick is mine too. Love the music and the train. Though I think rainbow road is my second. Its relaxing and feels so good. Like your celebrating finishing the game. The new ones are too chaotic.

Right, when I saw that they added Moonview Highway I was so hype. They've basically added all of my favorite Wii courses to 8. All I need is Wii Rainbow Road which is probably definitely coming and Mushroom Factor which unfortunately probably won't make it.

When I was younger and had Mario Kart 7, I would always try to follow the train into the tunnel in Kalimari Desert, and I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's had that experience

While I've never played 64's Frappe Snowland, i have played the DS Retro version, and i must admit that does at least fix Lakitu's no fun allowed barriers somewhat by using differently coloured snow to tell you where you can't drive. And admittedly, going through the snow valley is quite nostalgic to me.

Here's my defense of Wario Stadium: Learning to hop the walls is the perfect sweet spot of shortcutting. It's not a blatantly advertised shortcut like in Koopa Troopa Beach, it's not glitchy stuff like in Frappe. It takes some degree of timing and skill, but reasonably dedicated kids playing the game can learn to do it, especially the one right from the beginning. Then you never know just exactly how many shortcuts your buddies know, and there's the risk/reward of screwing up the jump and killing all momentum. Also, I love the big jump being so punishing. It's this terrifying landmark looming over the race. I've had so much fun seeing that ramp littered with banana peels, trying to bait out friends' Thunderbolts (or desperately hoping for a Boo to steal it) without falling into the gap... This track has CONSEQUENCES, both good and bad, and that's exciting. If you had given me 5 guesses what the last track in your rankings would be, it never would have even crossed my mind.

Man, Yoshi Valley that low? You can pick easier paths if you don't like the risks of the more narrow/treacherous ones, and you have the awesome risk/reward of trying to jump the U-turn down the stretch. I guess I just have completely different sensibilities when it comes to this game.

Some friends and I have the theory that N64 Wario Stadium was canonically remodeled into the DS one, and that’s why it’ll never return. Cuz it’s the only course to have a repeated name across multiple games (excluding circuits).
