Cult Hero
noun
a writer, musician, artist, athlete or other public figure who is greatly admired by a relatively small audience or is influential despite limited commercial recognition.
Every team has a player whom they praise despite them not being seen in the greater public eye. These are their stories.
Thank you to Robbie Hyde, Baseball Historian, and And That's Baseball for helping pick some of the cult heroes.

Munenori Kawasaki is kinda great. It takes a certain energy to go to a foreign country that speaks a language you barely speak and then just not even bother getting a translator so you just say shit. Dude speaks the language of baseball, that of being weird while also fun to watch.

As a Ranger fan there’s a few deep cuts that come to mind before seeing our player. David Murphy, Neftali Felix, Derek Holland, Mike Napoli, Rusty Greer, Kenny Rogers and Hank Blalock. I’d also put Michael Young on that list because I believe he’s the most underrated franchise player ever and doesn’t get his recognized as much as he deserves but he’s probably overqualified as a “cult” hero.

As a Red Sox fan, I probably would’ve gone with Kevin Millar honestly from that same era over Trot Nixon, as much as I loved Trot as a kid. i feel like Millar’s fun personality played a pivitol role in that 04 World Series run, he came up with the Cowboy Up catch phrase of that year as well as the team calling themselves idiots. From a team morale standpoint I don’t think they would’ve gotten that historic comeback against the Yankees in the ALCS without Millar in the clubhouse. He may have only played with the Sox for 3 seasons, but he was seriously a legend in the city that year and especially that October

@@nomorefielders even better. I thought it was but didn’t want to get anyone in trouble. So did you just remember that no doubt was from Anaheim or did you Google “famous bands from Anaheim”? I only ask because it wasn’t until after I commented it was a clever move that I noticed the theme of using city specific music each time. Still clever and probably not noticed by everyone but definitely made me think your love for ska might not be as hardcore as I originally hoped

royals fan here, Alex Gordon is my favoriter royal ever, and I agree that he is probably the most important royal since Brett (maybe Salvy but he's the only person close). I wanna shout out Christian Colon though, he had a super clutch hit to tie the 2014 wildcard in the 12th inning and the go ahead rbi in the 2015 world series. I feel like he's kinda forgotten in royals' lore but he's a legend in my book

I kinda feel like for the Rays, you gotta go with Dan Johnson even if he's a bit more well known. That man had exactly one skill by the time he got to the Rays: hit clutch homeruns, and somehow, even when he was otherwise a pretty lousy hitter, he just kept doing it, again and again and again, and of course, he saved his most famous for his final ever AB for the Rays. If and when the Rays get a new stadium, I think I speak for most Rays fans in saying there needs to be a statue of Dan Johnson out front.

Trot was a great choice. Papelbon came to mind, but he was pretty well known, not quite cult. Mark Bellhorn came to mind, but he wasn't actually... good? Trot was the best. He felt like the epitome of a ballplayer to me. Loved his dirty hat and helmets. This was an awesome video. I wonder how this video would differ for each era. I can think of a few cult heroes from the 2010s Sox teams that could easily fit the bill. Brock Holt, Eduardo Nunez, Saltalamacchia, Koji.

@@nomorefielders i think a lot of us are just jaded bc of how much "teasing" or just outright hate we get. it's easy to just stay in the bubble of people you know wont pick at a sore spot

The real fan base isn't pretentious, the 100+ losses fans are chill and humble af. Well, most of us lol. True story, I went to more games and had more during the tanking then most of winning seasons of the last several seasons. Well, my most favorite game of the last decade was that 2016 wild card game against the Yankees. DK wrecked the Yankmees.

@@nomorefielders oh please do! That would be incredible! I remember watching Inge playing for the West Michigan Whitecaps back in 1999 when he played catcher.

the answer for the Astros is Jake Marisnick. Mike Scott isn't bad but, it's Jake Marisnick. For guys who flew under the radar and maybe weren't actually all that amazing... Jake Marisnick. Forever and always, Jake Marisnick. Both of my sister's favourite player... it's Jake Marisnick. The best looking man in MLB? Jake Marisnick. The best centerfielder in baseball who never gets any credit... Jake Marisnick. Jake Marisnick is one of only four players my mother has ever known the name of: Jose Cruz, Brad Ausmus, Jose Altuve, and Jake Marisnick. If it's not Jake Marisnick then it isn't right.
