Every NBA Player Breaks This Rule And Refs Are Starting To Crack Down On It

A few days ago, Jordan Poole was called for a carry violation 3 times against the Miami Heat. This made a controversy across the league because it looks like it's only targeted to a certain amount of players. Carrying the basketball has been a violation since the start of basketball but when Allen Iverson came in, he exploited the rule with his famous killer crossover. Now many players have adopted this dribbling style making it completely unguardable. In this video, we take a look at the carrying violation, the evolution of the call in the NBA and the effects it has in today's game.
Please give this video a thumbs up, subscribe and leave a comment about what you think!
I do not own any highlights used in this video.

I started watching NBA with my old man when I was 7 in 1959, the year Wilt Chamberlain entered the league as a rookie. During the 60s and 70s the referees often called a carry but back then it was an inadvertent mistake on the player’s part, not a deliberate act to bend the rules. This trend to deliberately carry the ball seems to have started on the basketball courtyards when kids wanted to emulate the dribbling wizardry of Pete Maravich whose moving skills while dribbling was legitimate without having to carry the ball. To me, carrying the ball to bend rules in order to gain the advantage is not skillful, it’s sloppy and reflects a personality trait of someone who’s willing to cheat. Bring back rule enforcement.

You are correct. I've watched from 89 to 24 and can still see how much the basketball rules have changed. Prior to 80s players dribbled from there finger tips and were driven to reach the hoop as opposed to the 3ball of today (which is another thing that drives me insane... the shooting formation. They look like WNBA shooters.)

When I actively played basketball, there was a ball handeling rule: While dribbling the ball, man In possession of the ball, "the dribbling hand, can not break a 90° vertical plan... other wise that individual will be called for a carry/travel". Now that would really break the NBA. Plus, the "lean in foul", should've never existed. And obvious flops should be an automatic, technical

Killer crossover was Tim Hardaway, not Iverson. Carries are pretty easy, at least back in the day. If your dribble started from the lower third of the ball, it was a carry. I just laugh at half the players today who cannot dribble without rolling over the ball. And the fouls are easy - whoever initiates contact. It drives me nuts every time a defender plays great defense and the offensive player decides to simply accelerate into the defender and the ref bails out the offensive player.

Both of them used change of pace but if you notice, they didn't put their hands under the ball, nor did they cuff the ball, nor did they even take extra steps most of the time. The studder-step is a legal move and that is taking multiple steps within a dribble. Ja was carrying in these videos. So was KD.
@Isaac-mk3wj

i think when people saw IT or AI and say they carried, it’s because of the longer pause that happens when the ball is in one hand. i guess some people think that counts as discontinuing the dribble cuz it’s really easy to manipulate the ball like that, but i feel like it’s impossible to know if someone is doing that on purpose or if they’re going with the flow of the dribble… idk if that makes sense

I just want to point out that NBA refs judge a carry by the middle of the palm. If the middle of the palm goes below the middle equator, it's considered a carry, not necessarily if their fingers go below the ball. So, you technically are allowed to have your fingers go beyond the lower equator of the ball, so long as the middle of the palm doesn't go below the ball. You are also allowed to put your hand on the side and behind the ball. That is not a carry, so long as the middle of the palm goes beyond the mid point.

Great topic. MJ to me started the carrying and the refs looked the other way. Steph does it correct because he pushes the ball in a direction, not carry the ball. The rule is, the hand can't go half way from under, in todays game, is goes completely under and the refs let it go. They are finally addressing this issue.

And other than putting your hand slightly under the ball, where players have REALLY abused it, which is exactly what Isiah Thomas is doing in this video, is holding or kinda "letting" the ball stay in the air (without putting his hand under it) but taking 1 and 2 steps every time he does it, and he'll do it 3 different times in one possession and that coach is right, how the hell can you guard a guy who's doing that ??? If you apply this to aspects of the game like post play, that is where you get a lot of fouls, for jumping and the guy with the rock, jumping into you. But you can also just step through for a layup, just thought I'd bring that up. When it comes to anything outside the post, what's stopping you from continually jumping to deny passing lanes, since there is no penalty for it anymore. Just some food for thought

All these great dribbles are & have been doing it for years. I hope the start calling offensive fouls on ppl using their offhand to hit the defender while trying to dunk on them. Like how Blake Griffen did almost every dunk.

At 2:36 you hear someone yell out "Carry!"

Any time that the ball hand supports the ball, it's a carry, the same rule is in volleyball. Catching the dribbling ball is illegal af. This new wave, eoro style basketball is unrecognizable, to 80's kids

These guys have more carries per game than Ezekiel Elliott. I know because I have Ezekiel Elliott on my fantasy football team and Tony Pollard is taking away carries away from him.
@BrotherWatsonofWattsWatsonProd
I have to disagree with you about if carries were called, players would avg 5 turn overs a game. NO, players would adjust and get back to what the fundamental rules are. Refs let Curry kick his leg out on jump shots for 4 years, now that they call it, Curry doesn't do it as much. The Refs are destroying the rule book, the game and the lower divisions.

At the beginning of KD portion, his hand is clearly under the ball. He then moves it [briefly] under the ball again which allows him to pause. Thing is, he could easily pause with his hand on the side just by doing a slightly harder dribble or by letting it fall rather than dribbling it.

I’m glad they are calling this now it’s way outta hand

In my day these things were called palming, and dubble dribble. If the ball stops in the hand you can't dribble again. If the ball stops in the hand and you take two steps it is traveling. Things like this is one of the reasons people don't tune in.

THE OFFENSE IS TOO MUCH FOR THE DEFENSE NOWADAYS! THE OFFENSE LOOKS FANTASTIC BCOZ OF THIS VIOLATIONS THAT WERE BEING IGNORED!

You should do another one about traveling especially off of their pivot foot, which technically is not allowed
@bricefleckenstein9666
@bricefleckenstein9666 Год назад
NBA changed the rules in 2009 to allow up to *4* legitimate steps (counting the "gather") and a BASE of 2 steps. So taking a step off your pivot foot IN THE NBA is usually legal.
@onlyfacts3178
@onlyfacts3178 Год назад
@@bricefleckenstein9666 no...its not 4 legit steps..and gather is not a step...you can gather the ball without taking steps...gathering doesnt mean an extra step.

@bricefleckenstein9666 Год назад
@@onlyfacts3178 The "Gather" rule allows for 1 or 2 EXTRA steps, depending on the situation, over and above the current "2 step" rule. READ the rule sometime.

If y'all don't know how to do the move then y'all assessment is WRONG!!!! I started that crossover before iverson was doing it. As the ball is coming up your hand is about to touch the ball but your hand is NOT on the ball till you're pushing it down. Lots of players try to mimick this move by actually carrying the ball. I've done this move a billon times. I definitely pulled this move on steph Marbury and Allen iverson before. This was in several Brooklyn parks back in the 90s my street ball name was swinglow because I use to do a one dribble move to create space to hit an open shot against taller defenders

2:25 the announcers Johnny "Red" Kerr and Tom Dore were upset because no one was carrying like that back then. Just watch old 80s and 90s games. No one was doing that. Iverson started that bs.

This is why you have to take all these offensive numbers of today with a grain of salt. You can't defend someone with illegal handles. defense is being phased out of NBA basketball.
