The NBA has never seen more scoring or highlight plays. But are we really living in the best era of basketball? Some fans (and even the San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich who called it "a circus") disagree.
In this video, BasketNews' Augustas Suliauskas takes a look at how the NBA arrived at this moment and how some FIBA rules, together with different officiating could improve the situation.

Fiba rules basketball is a million % better to watch I’d rather watch Australia nbl or euro league than nba regular season. If i have to watch another nba game of hybrid scrimmage 3 point shootout with no defence and pick and roll / iso offensive plays I might literally pop .Rules I’d change are 1. Refs Call step back travels 2. Shrink the court size 3. Bring back body/hand checking and get rid of the no impeding progress rule 4. Reduce 3 point arc , the extra distance actually makes 3s easier because most shots are virtually uncontested and the defence can never close the gap off a penetrate and pass. 5. Separate the stats for 3s and 2s , so that the 3point % doesn’t reduce the 2 point %. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY MAKE THE NBA ALL STAR GAME A 100% FULL TILT MAXIMUM EFFORT GAME NOT AN MICKEY MOUSE EXHIBITION. Can you imagine the quality of basketball of the the 24 best players on earth going at it max effort for glory and bragging rights and the winning conference decides home court advantage in the nba finals

Carried ball, traveling, disastrous defense. With the European rules on traveling, players like James or Harden would not even score 50% of the scored points. Traveling is their greatest asset and they do it every time. Of course, there is also Morant, Westbrook and many others. Defense - does not exist. Especially on extra stars. Why? Because for the NBA, as a company, a LeBron dunk poster is much more profitable than some defense. Jerseys, TV rights contracts, popcorn, sandwiches, tickets... In the USA, basketball is exclusively a job, in Europe it is a sport, a family, a life. In Europe, it is unthinkable that fans, wearing the jerseys of rivals, sit next to each other. Often entire cities are divided by fan affiliation. The NBA is just entertainment, as is the understanding of all other sports in the USA. Therefore, in order to raise the level of entertainment, players, referees, in general the entire NBA organization, ignores the basic rules of basketball. Carrying, traveling, flopping, ridiculous defense. And Europe has superstars. I remind you, Luka, Joker, Janis, Dirk, Gober... they are all European players. But, like everyone else in Europe, they followed the rules. Because, in Europe, basketball is bigger than money. In the NBA, money is the only thing that matters. Basketball is just a tool to get there. Following the rules or not.

The way to get rid of players throwing themselves (i.e., flopping) is simple: treat it the way they treat flagrant fouls. * Every game is examined afterward by the league * Every time it's determined that you flopped, you get a point added to your score. * Once you get 16 points, every additional point means you're banned from the next game I can hear some people complain, "But who's to determine who's flopping or not". There will be panel of people paid to watch every game. Once the panels says you flopped, you flopped. No discussion. It would IMMEDIATELY get rid of the problem.

As a player of basketball for over 40 years this video is spot on with the problems with the NBA. 👍 I've been watching the NBA less and less over the past few years. What ticks me off the most is the blatant traveling and carrying over of the ball. Also allowing offensive players to use their offhand to knock away defensive players and not allow defensive hand checking is a joke. These things are only making the referees look bad and causing young kids to copy them, thus making things worse for the game in the future. They talk about changing some rules. These things have been going on for too long. They will have to make drastic changes to correct the game. This is another reason why I don't compare players from different eras of the game. @@peenhead9938 Totally agree that it's not very entertaining. And you are also right that overall it's not effective. That being said nine teams this regular season actually had a higher points per three point attempt than points per two point attempts. The biggest impact being the Suns where they would score 104 points per 100 2PA, but 112 from 100 3PA. So about a third of the league were actually more point efficient shooting threes instead of twos. Still leaving two thirds who wasn't. Overall the league average was 109,6 p/100 2pa while only 108,2 p/100 3pa. So you are right. On a somewhat unrelated note it's worth noticing that the top seven 3p% teams all went to the playoffs, and 11 of the top 13 with only Dallas and Indiana missing out. I assume it has to do with being more dangerous at threes creates more space in general, and five of those top seven teams actually were more point efficient shooting threes than twos. Just to round off: Still totally agreeing with you that it's not very entertaining watching all those quick three point shots. Nah the 3 point revolution has sucked for basketball. 80s and early 90s fastbreak basketball was awesome. The 3 point line was there but no one used it. Layups being the most valuable shot is better for basketball. There a many different ways to set up an offense to optimize paint play in full court and half court sets. Great shooters had an effect in every era. Bird, Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Peja Stojacovic, many others I'm missing. Nowadays everything mid range is worthless. There's barely any variety anymore. AAU basketball has also just made players unskilled so they need all of these crutches on offense. Players can't function outside simple offensive sets anymore and suck on defense too

I agree with everything in the video. The 3-pt/4-pt change is very interesting, I'd be curious to see some analytics on that. The worst offenders for me in terms of decreasing watchability of the game are travels, moving screens, and foul-baiting. Defense works so hard, doing everything right (from the perspective of my couch anyway), all for naught because the offensive player has such an advantage. I really enjoyed the start of the season 2 or 3 years ago where the refs were really cracking down on offensive-player-initiated contact. So many stars (Harden, Curry, Trae) had much worse PPG because the fouls were not getting called. Another small-but-big difference to FIBA is being able to touch the ball after it hits the rim. In NBA, there's nothing stopping an offensive player tipping the ball back in, but if the defender touches the ball, goal-tend. Where's the fairness in that?

While at the same time reducing defenses options. No handcheck, no touch on dribble, 5 second rules, and many more. To the point that defense is almost non important, just out score the opponent. @kdub3288
@kdub3288 Год назад
Also the reason of why it didn’t happen right away from the introduction of the 3 pointer was for a couple reasons. 1) The distance of the 3 changed a couple times. 2) It had to take time for teams to adjust to the 3 pointer, especially when teams started to shoot it well. You have a good shooting team, it opens up the floor and actually makes 2 pointers easier. All in all, the 3 pointer in terms of being worth 3 points form the current distance it’s at is perfectly balanced.

I totally agree with the points stated in this video, but I will add something else. Watching an NBA game on TV ends being booooring, the games are so long, and there isn't a moment when a team can extend a scoring streak to turn around the game, because there are so many time outs, a lot of interruptions to cut the pace. That makes easy, as a viewer, to lose interest in the game. I always "watch" NBA games while I'm doing something else. The game is always my second choice, being played in the background. And I'm quite old yet and I'm used to focus and be patient, but my son is incapable to maintain the attention. Further, clubs represent completely different countries, in a couple of cases even a different continent. And second, the moving screens, but specially when there's a completely legal screen, then the defensive player runs, crashes and falls down like he was hit by a truck and the referee calls OFFENSIVE foul LOL. This is crazy, that's why a lot of ppl is not interested in NBA basketball as much as before.

Big men posting up offensively has been pretty much completely eliminated from the NBA today. What this means is that the lane is WIDE open and once an offensive player gets by the initial defender there is no big defensive player guarding an offensive big so there's nobody there to block the shot. That's the majority of what's going on. You can go an entire game now without seeing even one player catch a ball in the low post and attempting to score in that manner.

1. Call more Offensive fouls on dunks over defenders 2. Make Traveling reviewable 3. Let the shot clock start from the moment the inbounder has the ball in his hands 4. Shorten the games to 40 Minutes like in Fiba and College.

Call carries, travels, and moving screens. Consistantly. Change 3 second to a 5 second. Change goaltending to allow for blocking shots that have touched the rim (ie in FIBA). Call flopping as a tech. Move the sideline 3 point line out 1 foot. It makes it the same distance as the top of the arc and allows for less room for players to run into spots. Add at least a month to the schedule and spread games out more so players have more rest and need less management. I think these would do the trick. We dont have to go back to some halycon 8 year period where basketball drew nor ratings and was on tape delay. We don't need to go back to the "no zone defense and its a foul if you leave your man" that they gave Michael so he could fly through uncontested paints. We just need a little bit of tweaking.

The game played in the NBA is NOT basketball. Its a hybrid "breed", which has been altered for the sake of showmanship. All the rules you mentioned, that have been changed or outright are just ignored by the refs (obviously because they have been asked to do so), lead to and promote a star-player focused game. How can you call it basketball when a player, quite literally, picks up the ball with no stable foot, runs 5 steps without dribbling while palming the ball and fakes while dribbling over the defender who is blocked by a moving screen ? Those rules were there for a reason. And this reason was mostly, to encourage TEAM PLAY, in a team game. You HAD to pass the ball , you HAD to time your screens correctly in order to help your teamate. You HAD to follow a co-ordinated play, in which everyone played their part, in order to find the open shot. Whats the point of all that if one guy can just grab the ball and travel his way to the basket ? All of those things are gone in todays NBA. The players are learning the sport like that all the way through their life. I remember when the outrage was only about how NBA players used to take flight with their KNEE extended and not being charged with offensive fouls while going for a dunk. Which is, in itself, a major issue of unfairness to the defender. Dunks in the NBA have lost all meaning for me , for that very reason. How can you even defend when someone flies with their knee or elbow leading the way ? My point is, those rules were there for a reason. Its a team game but the NBA has taken that aspect out of it, for the sake of showmanship. You cant expect to change FUNDAMENTAL rules and then scratch your head on why the game has evolved into something else. Even in international competitions USA teams are refereed leniently, whereas NBA international players get called for things NBA USA players dont. Its obviously a directive of compromise. If the refs would call team USA with actual FIBA rules, they would hardly score. Anyways, its a tree - forest situation. Its not about the scorelines and statistics imo, its about the very essence of the game. Its a team game and the NBA has managed to make it a "single player with a supporting cast" game. Which bodes well with records and cool dunks and 3pointers, but when the excitement goes away (which is starting to happen) because those become the norm, then they will have to change it to something else. But thats a slippery slope.

You’re being hyperbolic, the carry step, jumping with the knee out, not needing to keep your hand at the very top of the ball and other things Literally exist for biomechanical & practical reasons. Look at old school basketball. It’s stilted and awkward, not fun. There’s a a reason basketball as a national sport was dead for a long time before the 80s. The game evolved, offense became better, the game became more exciting, more fun. What the hell is “real basketball” meant to mean? It’s basketball. People are loving it. Get over yourself man! Note: if you think jumping one leg in with your knee out- which is a natural motion for a human, is unfair to a defender, that’s embarrassing… And you’re factually wrong about the team aspect swindling, teams don’t win big playing hero ball like you’re describing. No single star with supporting cast wins. Team sport, cohesion has always won. Whether it’s been with a big three or not. You should be more open minded, honestly. You’re holding on to an ideal that proven by the numbers and by general response, to be impractical and not as enjoyable. And it’s causing you to believe and say things that aren’t true, like the hero ball taking over the game. Definitely not true.

I would have the NBA adopt FIBA rules but keep the corner 3. FIBA rules are basically the old NBA rules from the 1980's and 1990's up until 2003/2004 with the innovations of David Stern. That was the real Golden🌟 Age of Basketball. I also agree making the season shorter is better for the game to make each game more meaningful. Perhaps 50 games instead of 82. Also the All Star-Game has to be re-done because it used to be that All-Stars competed to show that they were the best. Instead today its just an exhibition of no defense. Maybe players who get selected for the All-Star Game should get a special monetary bonus or special insignia they can carry on their jersey all year showing their elite status as players, if a player loses his all star status he has to hand his insignia to a player who has been selected to the all-star team in the following year...it makes the game and the elite status more personal if you have to literally hand the baton to a player who has out-competed you...

Carry, and illegal screens are mentioned but I think one of the main problem as well is the lack of teams practicing zone defense (which is hardly discouraged due to the defensive 3 sec rule). Im not saying that each team should do it all the time, but its clearly not used enough. Having defensive options that you can switch to force your oponent into an unomfortable position is basic strategy in any sport.

I'm American, and I'd like for the NBA to let teams run any kind of defense they want. No more illegal defenses. Tactics are important in team sports. Bring back physicality and defense to the league. Maybe FIBA can adopt the figure of the NBA lane and moving out the 3 point line. Basketball should be universal, and the rules are the foundation.

The kawhi Leonard rule is also a major point. If you watch close outs and contests on 3 pt shots, they often fly off to the side or contest like 4 feet away from the shooter because they are scared to get called for a flagrant or a foul. Safety is important but imo they overreacted cuz it was Kawhi. I didn’t see a real epidemic of players doing that to implement that rule. So these 3s are often wide open with a contest that is more for show than actually stopping the 3 pointer

I pretty much agree with all of these. Simply enforcing travelling, carrying, and moving screen violations would go a long way. I've also long thought we should do away with both offensive and defensive three second violations. Three in the key made sense when the game was played closer to the basket but that's not really the case now. I'm a little hesitant to bring hand-checking back, to me that would be last on the list but not out of the question. Getting rid of corner threes sounds radical but might actually make a lot of sense. I think a balance needs to be found between the way the game is currently played vs the slow, post oriented game in the 90s, which IMO wasn't as entertaining as the game is now. The NBA could experiment with some of these ideas in the G-League the way the MLB experiments with proposed rule changes like pitch clocks in the minor leagues.

Call moving screens, no palming, traveling, double dribble and get rid of corner 3s. On defense, you can hand check, but can’t slide underneath someone from 3ft away and hoping he hits you so you can draw a charge. Protect the rim, don’t just stand in the way. I’m not saying ban charges, but a secondary player can’t slide in the way while the offensive player is gathering to jump.

Rudy should be camping in the paint that’s his primary job to defend the rim! It’s not like it’s impossible to score with him down there just watch any team play France in FIBA. It use to be impressive to watch a guard or small forward dunk over 7 footers and now it’s just normal.
