I finally got monetized in May. While I am grateful for that what I really want is a sponsorship deal with my favorite vendor. Unfortunately I feel like I'm "Johnny come lately" and that door is closed as this vendor already has several MUCH larger channels they use. Ah well I didn't start the channel for money but it sure would help me maintain the hobby!

I just loved this, Nick. I got chills when you were talking about making a difference in someone’s life through making videos and it really hits home. When I get comments saying Ive helped someone find the motivation to try something new because they saw me do it, or I helped them through a bad day, it gets me really choked up. It’s something I wasn’t expecting when I started my channel last year, but it’s one of my favorite parts, honestly. It really makes me see how important and helpful our videos can be. And here I am, watching you, so you are helping my subscribers too, by helping me. It’s a never ending cycle. I watch you and Nate and take a lot of your advice. Thanks so much for helping me navigate this new path.

This is YOUR BEST video. Not only because of the advice and the bare facts that you have touched upon, but also because I happen to be among the many creators who closely relate to the people mentioned by you in this classic piece. I've always been following your vids as one creator who knows that his content is good (or above average), who has been constantly focusing on improving the quality of work, but one whose only problem seems to be 'not reaching' the right audience. I spend as much of my time listening to successful YT creators as I do in conceptualizing and creating my own stuff. But one thing is for sure. I'm not gonna give up, and it's people on YT like YOU who keep fueling my energy/passion/willpower. So, a BIG thanks for this advice Nick.

One of the things that I discovered along the way was that I needed to enjoy making the content. I abandoned a channel earlier this year with a little over 4K subs and started a new channel because I realized I did not enjoy making the content. Today, I am happier and more excited to create content on my new channel. Thanks for this timely video, Nick!!

Persistence of passion is often promoted as the goal of being a Creator. There’s some validity in that, but you’ve really highlighted that maybe the pursuit of learning and just getting incrementally better is a way to have a bit less pressure and a lot more results. While I haven’t ever wanted to quit - I have felt discouraged. My key is to turn things around and tell myself “wow! There’s an entire platform that lets me practice creating and lets me share it with the world - how cool is that?” It’s pretty amazing when you think about it. I’m old enough to remember a time before RU-vid - when the idea of just being able to create was full of obstacles. Now, the world can see your work.

But if I actually went through with it I wouldn’t have enjoyed the success I have managed so far. Don’t quit! Even when the numbers don’t look good keep going! Push through it. 😊

I'm approaching the 100 video mark on my channel and I still have less than 500 subscribers. I fully recognize that RU-vid is not to blame. Great video Nick! I remember at Vidsummit when you said "this is REAL" -- it gave me chills! This is absolutely real and it's incredibly life changing. I also love how you explained the "data" versus "opinions" model. I think that going down the rabbit hole of blaming RU-vid for your lack of success is dangerous because it takes power away from you as a creator. You have total power when it comes to being successful on RU-vid. If you're not getting views, engagement, etc. there is something that is not working that you have the power to change. I appreciate you and your content so much. Sending a hug from Canada your way!

this was really helpful! one of the things that resonated with me about youtube is its ability for creators to use their creative expression, which you can make literally anything as long as you obey the guidelines and such. I think many people nowadays just look at youtube for the monetization, as for me I like how being able to create something resonates with me more as well as having my channel stand on its own two legs and be visited by people like a shop or something or a museum even if I'm not monetized yet

That is very true. I had a car accident 10yrs ago, that destroyed my professional life and severely affected my personal life. Until I came across a RU-vidr making video about hobby. That had a cascading effect. I learned to 3D print, then CAD design and Digital Sculpting. Now I just made the jump into having my own channel to promote my product. It has given me a second lease in life with a healthy hobby that I am hoping to turn into a new professional path. Went from wishing to have died in that car accident to hope of having an income again, a purpose and the beauty of that….a hobby outlet so I don’t feel like a useless bag of meat.

What would you advise to someone’s channel that for some reason exploded before they had a chance to learn the skills you speak of?
@NickNimmin
@NickNimmin 9 месяцев назад
I just looked at your channel. Keep doing what you’re doing. You have naturally created something people respond to. If you’re interested in being strategic, start looking in your audience retention reports for patterns in how people respond when watching the video content. This will help you know the parts of the videos people skip, stick to, rewind and when they leave. Using that graph per video you can get really tuned into exactly what they want from you in detail. Also, use your community feed to post pics about fishing, ask viewers questions about their favorite things about fishing using the polls feature, etc. But the bigger thing is that you’re resonating heavily with people. That’s difficult to achieve but you’re doing it. Your view/sub ratio is a bit extreme so that will end up changing over time but that’s ok. Keep going.

I appreciate your vulnerability in telling your story. Thank you. Am I right when I think that in order to get views I have to have impressions and those impressions are based on RU-vid's algorithms? So then, the question would be, how do I get more impressions?
@NickNimmin

You get more impressions when people respond better to the videos you publish.

This is really well done, Nick. From being in every one of your live streams since January 2021 (and sporadically before), aside from the amazing community, one thing I have picked up is that RU-vid fundamentally doesn't work the way I became accustomed to social media through the friendster, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter days. All social media now relies on recommendation algorithms which behave differently per platform, but the advantage to RU-vid (besides monetization opportunities) is that through data, they disclose and present everything. No social media platform comes close. So while RU-vid can be "shooting in the dark", it also can be highly strategized and even gamified. That's powerful for the reasons you have here.

I've been on RU-vid for over 2 months now, however, I only have 69 subscribers. I make content on relationships but it seems I haven't crack the code as yet. I got demotivated before and wanted to stop but I dedicated to continue because I am passionate about relationships and understanding human nature. P.s. My channel is faceless, I haven't really reached out to friends and family so that could be one reason I am having a slow growth.

Better to let the right audience find the content rather than rope in friends and family who might not be a good fit for your content.

Is it possible for someone's channel and videos to be sabotaged? Can people deliberately down vote a video without even watching it? Can people deliberately manipulate the youtube algorithm by clicking on a video and then clicking away seconds later?

I always like your videos, because they are so uplifting to continue on our journey as content creators. Also, you have done a video where you show all the flubs and bad takes when you record your videos in sections, in order to get the perfect final take after editing it together, showing even established content creators go through the process of creating good videos which we all should do!

Loved the video. This is my second run with my channel first run I burnt out focusing on all the wrong things. This time as in my main job balance is key. Resurrected my old gaming channel from 51 subs to now 589 subs over 1yr 3 month window. Keeping it real, use community posts regularly. Interacting with subs. Using playlists, pinning comments, knowing that my videos help people each week. Not in a rush to hit the 1000. It will happen when it happens. For now enjoying creating, building a community, having great interactions, whilst doing something I enjoy.

Nick Nimmin.. RU-vid should show our videos to everyone. Lets say they only show it to some people or even half and those people or that half doesn't like the video, then RU-vid stops pushing out the video. Well what if the other people or the other half would absolutely love the video? We would never know because RU-vid stopped pushing the video out to new people. Thanks for this video brother.
@NickNimmin
@NickNimmin 9 месяцев назад
RU-vid doesn't stop testing your videos to find the right audience. If they are testing with your core audience first and they don't respond, then that says something about the content missing the mark, whether the video is off-topic to what they typically get from you or the topic, packaging, and/or the video itself missed the mark somewhere. If the audience for a video is adjacent to your typical audience, it might take RU-vid a little longer to test and figure that out.

Just found this in passing and wanted to commend you on a job well done in this video. I started my RU-vid channel about 4 to 6 years ago and you were the number one influence to build my channel. Over time I began to take the comments on my channel seriously and most of the comments were about my authenticity as a psychotherapist , my relatability, and my natural personality. It wasn't 100% the knowledge that I brought to my channel but a combination of that knowledge with humility, personality, and as you stated authenticity. I've been able to grow a channel well over 54,000 subscribers in a short time because of this. And during every live chat, I have come to relate to my audience as if we know each other and tons of them tell me I feel like their personal therapist. That's what RU-vid is all about and I appreciate you for pointing that out!

Yes, it is tough... but it's also rewarding. It's a unique experience to find that balance between RU-vid/Work/Life. And you can see how fast your content improves with editing, pacing, scripting and improv (some things can't be scripted). To everybody who just starts: it's a hell of a ride, but it's worth trying.
