Even if you have a large home, there's no longer any need of a plant room! I was called out to a huge house with two massive cylinders either side of a spaghetti junction of piping in a plant room. They paid me to figure out all the pipes, and build it into a one-page sheet, as every time they called a plumber out, they took one look at the pipework and went home. So I spent almost all day and figured it (tracing where all the pipes went throughout the house) - and set it to paper on my PC. The next day, I was asked to re-attend and balance the system, as some rads weren't getting hot. However, when I got there (27 miles) the maid (!) told me that all three teenage girls were asleep as they had just got back from a little holiday (each girl had their own room with en suites to each that were larger than my bathroom - not kidding). I told her that I HAD to go in every room, and that I would be quiet. She said no. I told her to go and wake the mother and explain. She did, and came back to say that she said no as well. So I said goodbye. The maid was shocked and thought I was joking as I got in my van. As I was driving down the motorway home, the mother phoned me and begged me to come back, as did their builder (who had called me in). I told them both that they needed to treat the next plumber better, and to not call me again. Naturally, I took my plant room plan with me! One of the great things about being self-employed is that you can tell someone where to stick it if you want.

Did you get paid for the day's work you spent working out the plant room plan? If you did then didn't the plan belong to them? I'm not on their side but just wondered about the logistics of this and if it cost you to teach them a lesson. Hope it didn't cost you too much for that day's work you lost. They needed to be taught a lesson!
@jimskirtt5717
@jimskirtt5717 Год назад
@@realitybites6562 I got paid for the plan, but they refused to pay for the lost day...so I kept the plan. If they had paid me for the lost day, I would have given them the plan.
@realitybites6562
@realitybites6562 Год назад
@@jimskirtt5717 I'm not sure that's legal. If you got paid for it then it belongs to them. Maybe the correct thing is to provide the plan but sue for the lost day. However because of their behaviour I would have kept the plan myself and said that if a renter doesn't pay for the last month of rent then I keep their deposit to offset what they owe me and by the same token I'm keeping the money for the plan as payment in lieu of the lost day's work and the plan is kept until they pay me or something like that. They would find it difficult anyway to sue you for the plan when they know that this would automatically cause you to countersue for the lost day so they know better than to say anything!! Hope they will treat the next plumber better

When I started working on boilers about 15 years ago, the old timers taught me the concept of "pumping away." There's a little more nuance to it, but it essentially means putting the pump on the supply and the zone valves on the return. I'll never forget that and it has always helped me when piping in boilers. Oil burners, on the other hand, are entirely different animal. That's an art form right there.

Plumbers wife here... yep. EVERYWHERE there is plumbing and gas fitting to be found, it has to be inspected. Even friends houses are not left alone. "oh I just saw your ..... needs urgent replacement. Oh, that connection is not legal. Oh, you should have a look at getting a new water filter or cylinder or whatever." Toilets, anything that connects a house to the outside world via pipes... and when we go home he goes: ;Have you seen their central heating darling? I did that... 30years ago actually, it still works well... never a hitch with it. (pat pat on shoulder) Plumbers are funny. No toilet withstands their scrutiny... No heating system is too complicated, not the latest, nor the oldest of their work is left alone... when they look at the gras from below is when it stops... but I think even then will they will probably still inspect how the rainwater flows through the finest of roots of the plants... lol

I had a scaled up ballcock in the loft cold water tank so the tank was filling up slowly. I noticed the water level in the central heating header tank would drop when the cold water tank did. It turned out to be a hole in the hot water cylinder coil, so in my case I had the chemicals from the heating system mixing with our hot water. I’d never have known if the cold water tank ballcock hadn’t scaled up as the water from the hot tap was still clear.

These videos are always good, as no human on this earth has more then 1% of human knowledge, so no matter how much you think you know, you lack at least 99% of all human knowledge, and what humans know. For all the arrogant people out there, there is always something you do not know. Most people will have 0.0001% of all human knowledge in there head. ^^ Think about it. Even if you think people are an arse on youtube, if they understand what they specialise in, there is always something you can learn from them, if they know what they are talking about. People who have done same trade for years, will understand and know stuff, you can only learn from experience of doing that job. Thats why such videos are good for anyone, who is not a tradesman. Yep, many things may seem obvious, but everyones understanding is different, and water finds its own level, and we all understand things at our own level. We all understand some things others do not understand, and most things we do not understand, but others will understand. Thats why no human have more then 1% of all human knowledge, and you would be surprised in where you can find knowledge, that is true, you never heard off, or thought off yourself.

Interesting about hot water expanding. Water attains it's maximum density at 4 degrees Celsius and when it gets to zero, the state change there to ice, causes massive expansion, hence broken and split pipes if water freezes in them. At the other end of the scale, at 100 deg. Celsius, water boils and the state change there into steam also causes massive expansion. STP assumed. So water is a very interesting substance and we take it for granted a lot. Let's hope climate change can be controlled so that we can keep some of it on Earth.

Great video- thanks! Few questions please as I have similar pressurised system in my house: 1. Is secondary heating loop supposed to have each outlet joined to it or just connected at the furthest outlet return? 2. I never use secondary pump as plumber said would have to run permanently. Can this not be wired on timer or better still, a pipe thermostat when the secondary return temperature gets too low? 3. Interested to see your video on airlocks as I get a fast to slow dripping sound in one bedroom about where the pipes drop down to ground floor. Remember the plumber saying at the time he should have fitted auto air vent but didn't. Or could it be rubbing against joist where pipe passes through or not clipped properly? 4. Lastly, when 2 outlets are opened I get a drop in water pressure (e.g. at shower or tap) which I thought pressurised systems were meant to avoid. Reduced incoming cold pressure to 3 bar (have a new 28mm mdpe mains with 5+ bar of pressure I think). I think hot and cold all goes round in 22mm, branched off to outlets in 15mm. Any idea why this would happen?? Lot of questions but would appreciate any advice or thoughts!!

Great video, I would love if you could show a diagram of what is going on inside the cylinder tank with the hot water and radiator pipes/ heat exchangers and how it regulates the pressure and temperature in the tank, I never have got my head around that bit.
@lucash1980
@lucash1980 Год назад
Boiler water pipe into the cylinder, round and round she goes inside the cylinder in a coil, and then back out. Cold potable water into the bottom of the cylinder, gets all hot and bothered by the toasty boiler coil, and then exits out the top to your tap. If you are extra fancy pants, you install a TRV, temperature regulating valve, to mix your scalding hot tap water with a little cold to control the temperature and stretch the amount of hot water available.

Hello James, need your thoughts and advice. We currently want to change our washing machine area by moving it from one side if kitchen to other side but have no plumbing on that side. What would be the best way to plumb from one side to the other but unable to do it against the wall, the best way will be to chase through concrete floor then screeding floor as laying new tiles?
@chrispratt93

Yes, if there’s no other route it can take externally. Be sure to tape around the pipe with duct tape which will be in the screed to protect the copper. Or sleeve it with another pipe.
