@@DoodlesGaming "this is the greatest gaming series on youtube" go back to doodling on your wannabe channel you'll forsure never be anything on RU-vid.
the game is hella expensive on the gamecube. Should only get it if it's officially the game you really really wanna play. I have a copy and dam is it good.
The lack of respect for past great games is amazing. It's not just happening on consoles, it's happening on pc too. Keep having to return awesome older games as they simply will not work on modern pcs without outside mod support. Some games are getting remastered and that's good. But many have not been.
IIRC it was considered but never given anything beyond that due to RE:DS' unimpressive sales, alas - which sucks because I think RE2DS would've been another excellent port if nothing else.
I feel in the spirit of the original game, I almost feel a Switch port of REmake 2 should be attempted. Though I imagine the likelihood of that is unlikely, especially given the quality of the other RE ports on the system.
I was disappointed, given how re2 is 60 FPS on consoles and RE Engine is multiplatform - oriented. They could have probably attempted 30 FPS 720p at least.
Meatman Meatman I saw the price for those Framemeisters and nearly died. Might as well buy a brand new console or PC at that price. I think I can live with PS3 emulation.
Regarding the N64 port, it should also be noted that at least one zombie texture has been cut, leaving the game with a little bit less variety in zombie appearance. As well, Claire's voice is used for both cut-scenes with Annette in the sewers where she talks about commando raid and William's infection.
I've recently played through all of the versions of RE2, except the N64 version. The Sourcenext is the best one. Jared didn't mention that it has a hard mode, and it makes the game truly challenging. Also, it has an Arrange mode that plays exactly like the american and european releases, enemy placements and all.
I think the N64 character models had polygons culled. The psx had a massively bigger polygon budget which it needed to offset the affline texture swimming due to it not being able to render perspective correct textures.
Actually the n64 could go over the ps1 polygon limit, but it had to be done with a different code set than the ones originally supplied by nintendo. I believe factor five and Rare were the few that I know of that went that far. I'm not sure how much memory a polygon model might create, but I wonder if they were culled due to them trying to save space anywhere they could.
The DC and PC versions also have exclusive arrange modes. On DC they're called Expert and Nightmare and on PC they're called Normal and Hard. The DC version and PC version pre-DLL have a red tint to them because the game was translated to a different color space. With the .DLL patch, you can choose between the PSone's color space, the port's default color space, and a neutral RGB color space. I run my DC version at a progressive signal with a high quality upscaler to 1080p. It has a much harsher look than the analog signal you're showing here, which I think has a nice softness to it. Why do you choose not to tap into your DC's progressive signal; and, do you have any vids showcasing your setup? Fantastic, comprehensive video!
18:35 Small correction: the CGI cutscenes in the Sourcenext port of RE2 still play at 30 fps, not 60. There's a mod for the sourcenext port that includes upscaled renditions of the FMVs to 1080p60, but the original source files for RE2 were always limited to just 30 frames. The higher bitrates do give these cutscenes a much stronger cinematic look than the more lo-fi versions, which might create the perception of it being a full 60 frames. But look up the 1080p60fps version of the cutscenes on YT and you'll see the difference immediately. 19:45 the Japanese versions of RE2 weren't made "easier", it was actually the international releases that were made harder. Btw, i'm surprised you didn't mention the strong red tint the DC version displays in all its backgrounds compared to other versions. There's obviously something that went wrong with the color space conversions during the porting process from the PC version. The weapons also sound quite muffled/not as crisp in this version. For me, those things alone disqualifies the DC port as contender for best version.
@@unknownd3ath Well, no. The Japanese version is the original version of the game, so it wasn't made easier. They decided to increase the difficulty for the international releases; not the other way around.
@@AvalancheReviews Yes... The upside is that Capcom is making excellent Resident Evil games again, so I guess the more times you have to tweak the series and add additional content, the better for all of us! I will get to enjoy more great games as well as more great retrospectives! (Although, I must admit that I'm not looking forward to being hunted by Nemesis...)
So, as it turns out, it seems RE2 could have actually fit on one disc. I actually don't remember if you were the one that pointed that out or not, but I do remember finding the information in my own research for the game. Plan to do my own little RE thing, though been meaning to ask how you might feel about that, since you've basically become the RE Retrospective guy. Anyhow, it seems they miscalculated how much data their sound formula was going to take, and didn't realize it'd actually fit all on one disc until it was too late.
@21:51 To fix the native slowness on the gamecom emulator, there is a gamecom.ini file*, in that text file there is a setting for speed. I change that setting to 120 and the games play close to oem speed. In the emu you can only set it to 100 which is too slow. *edited
You can also speed it up 10 - 15 % in post to get it about right. I want to say the emulator plays all the games at 80% speed when it is set at 100 in the speed setting. 120 in the cfg throws up an error but just works for me.
I think the re4 announcer is good for 4-5 because of the places that story took place. A village in Spain far away from civilization and a city in middle of nowhere in Africa. But i agree re2,3 and almost rest of the games in the series need more high toon voice and i know it's strange but kinda more "official".
I kinda wish they still made CRT tv's for games like this. I mean, with modern technology they probably wouldn't be so bulky and heavy. Who here has hurt their back moving a CRT?
@@juliushall8499 He basically gave the most biased review possible of silent hill 4. He ignored entire sections and mechanics of gameplay, including the iconic haunts that happen in the room. He even left it as just a place to heal and save, when the room becomes increasingly dangerous and starts draining your health but he never even comes close to mentioning that. It really was just too biased.
I guess you couldn't let go the franchise that made you popular. After watching the entire video I will still stick with the Playstation DUAL SHOCK edition of the game because includes all the extras that are missing from the original release. Furthermore, I hate how sharp Leon/Claire model looks compare to the backgrounds in all other versions (including the HD fan-project). PD: Are you planning on continuing on the Silent Hill franchise?. You covered all the other mediocre RE games after the original trilogy, why don't you give the same treatment to the honorable rival?. I would love to see your thoughts on Origins, Homecoming, Shattered Memories and Downpour.
Not every video you make is a masterpiece, but finding one that isn't usually takes a day of binge-watching your content. 😂 And even if it's not a masterpiece, it's either still a relatively great video or just simply a masterpiece and a half..! Your channel and your content makes me so freakin' happy and is EASILY one of the top 50 highlights of my entire life in the almost 26 years of being on this planet..! 💜 Thank you for everything, fam..! ✌️👽
It felt like the Dreamcast is the best home for Resident Evil. It's just a shame it never got a official port of the first game, then you could go through the original trilogy with ease!
@@AvalancheReviews Imagine being able to play the first three, then Code Veronica with ease! I guess REmake/0 wouldn't be feasible (and it would require the DC to...y'know...not bomb) but it'd be cool having the first three altogether.
Gonna try out Sourcenext with REbirth. What resolution do you reckon would be the best to play on so the 3D models aren't so sharp against the pixel backgrounds? I would hope that softens up the backgrounds too, would much rather play it in a way that will emulate the dreamcast look instead of running at my native resolution (just 1080p)
I found a modded PC version once that had all the zombies replaced with Mr. X and Birkin tyrants.. That game was hard asf, until I downloaded the cheat engine lol
So... you show us your awesome PC RE3 background screen and you decide to run the program OVER Jill? How DARE you?!?!? (PS. Thanks for this awesome Christmas gift video)
13:19 Just rewatching these (as I do a lot). _"There's one more line of pixels which I've been cropping out for consistency's sake"_ God damn this is some sweet nerd gold!
Itd be cool if you highlighted on screen what you were referring to sometimes, the image happens so quick on examples im looking all over the screen to see what youre talking about. Either way good job, im sure RE3 is next
The work they did on re3 is much better looking than 2. I heard from some people that 2 is still being worked on, while re3 was their baby from the getgo. Both are amazing though.
Hey Avalanche, thanks for this series. Despite me not playing any other RE game to completion other than the PC port of Revelations prior to finding you, I've watched every single one of these retrospectives. You've near singlehandedly made me appreciate Resident Evil like never before, and made me get excited along my series veteran friends when the RE2 remake was announced. Now I just gotta keep up with the Silent Hill Retrospectives and whatever the heck you decide to tackle next... I'm sure you can get me interested in another series or few, even if my wallet will eventually suffer!
Gotta love how youtube thinks this video is about the RE2 remake, their algorithm seems to mix games almost as frequently as it picks the right one. I mean sure, the fact that having two different games with the exact same name in the same series is a common ocurrence must be a nightmare to sort out, publishers should stop doing that XD
I recently obtained the GC ports of both RE 2 and RE 3. I paid more than I would’ve liked, but I’m happy to finally have them in my collection since I’ve never had them. For the GC at least.
19:19, there is a french street plate : "Place du président Mithouard". It actually exists and it is located in Paris. But why in RE2 ? You can find this place on the french part of wikipedia. The guy was president of the city council from 1914 to 1919. They gave his name to the place because he lived there... The more you know I guess. But why in RE2 ??
Hey buddy, I can't contact you on Patreon, so I'm asking, are your unlisted videos available through your patreon? That would be what would lure me in to give you at least 5 USD (6.80 for me, CAD, so please be understanding, I'd go for 10 but that becomes 15 and worse as you go up...god I miss 2001-2015 parity/quasi-parity/more-valuable than USD times!!!).
Capcom should release a Mega Resident Evil collection with every main RE game up to 7. The PS1 trilogy, CVX, Zero, 4, 5, 6. Or if they REALLY want to impress us; make a Resident Evil game maker.
You play this with an analogue stick? Well, all right. I've never done that. My main version's been the GameCube for years, and the controller seems oddly suited for these games despite being an experimental mutant. Want to get my hands on the PC version someday. I'm mad to try that hard mode. For the N64 version, you didn't mention the non-tank controls option, which I wouldn't use, but it's interesting that it's there. The N64 version is overall one of the most impressive feats of optimisation to date. I used to have it after my PS1 copy broke, and I basically thought it was fine. The extra files made up for the flaws as far as I was concerned. So, pretty impressive.
First off, amazing job you've done on this series. I just binged watched all of it over the past week and you did an amazing job. I've only finished a few of the RE games, but your videos make me want to play through them all. Secondly, what settings or firebrand profile are you using for PS1 and PS2 framemeister footage? Mine doesn't look quite that good. Lastly, how did you get around the framemeister 240p/480i resolution switch issue with the PS1 and N64 ports? Thanks for all the content and keep up the great work!
The graphics never mattered to me, I just loved playing the game. To this day, I don't have a sensitive enough eye to care about the different versions. The only thing that matters most to me is being able to skip cutscenes for replays, so the gamecube version is my go to.
I bought the N64 port last year just for the technical marvel that it is. I enjoyed it, but I love how it's also the heaviest cartridge in the N64 library, something which is noticeable when holding it.
I played the resident evil since day one, RE1 in 96. It was my favorite game at the time even over ff7. First horrror game I played. Grant I can't play it now with its tank control and fixed camera, but it had charm to it back them. Re2 was just a more polish upgrade on most aspect of the game, but it was ground breaking since it follow re1. Most younger gamers probably play re3 or re2 first and then tired re1, yeah it would hold up. re2 remake is the tightest control in game for the series, I even grade it higher the og re2.
I had never seen REmake 2 before this, and tbh i was expecting it would look like the REmake did, all remastered and stuff, but its a port from the PS1/Dreamcast version, any idea why it was not remastered/remake at all ?
thank you so much for these videos, youtube just show me your channel. i'm agree with you, the best resident evil 2 version is the dreamcast version for all reasons you mention in the video, you should check RE 2 special edition plus for dreamcast, it's a free project and it has tons of new stuff. btw, i don't understand why people don't like S-video (well, real s-video cables), i'm playing my retro consoles with a sony trinitron 27'' and s-video / component cables and trust me that RE2 for dreamcast looks fantastic.
The baked-in subs on the SourceNext release are very annoying. I wonder if it'd be better to take the DC videos, and maybe run them through an AI interpolation.
Honestly I don't think anyone should ever mention the gamecom port of RE2 since well it shouldn't exist nor would I ever say that it belongs to the franchise, I'd rather people just forgot it existed
THERE was also a standalone handheld version made by tiger electronics as part of their 99x series, but it's extremely rare, the series itself is poorly documented, and the game is nearly identical to the game com version, so it's best to not go down that rabbit hole.
A GameCube port of a PSone game being digitally upscaled... ooo, just typing that sentence made me tingle. Also, for the odd differences between hidden item placements between the Japanese and western releases, this was super common in the late 90s to thwart unofficial strategy guides, which would use the Japanese version of the game to get their guides on the shelves faster than the official guides. I can't guarantee this was the reason why, but I know Working Designs and quite a few other companies did this at the time EDIT: HOLY HELL you actually talked about the Game Com version I DON'T BELIEVE IT
Anything but the dreadfull PS1 versions. I can't stand playing those. I played mostly RE on dreamcast (exept my first time playing 2 was on the N64) so when i tried playing the PS1 version i tough it looks like shit. Ill take compressed cutscenes on the N64 since the gameplay visuals are so much better. DC still my fav way to play it but GC is more than find too. But PS1... nah it looks like a big mess of pixels on screens...
I like the Dreamcast port, but got more nostalgia for the PS1 release. I didn't have a dreamcast back then. :( Any chance you might do a review for Monolith Productions' FEAR franchise? You might like to check out a little game on Steam called Trepang2. There's a free demo on there and it looks like it might be a worthy successor to FEAR1.
6:36 This is most likely a bitrate issue with the codec they were using. Back in the day video codecs were really inefficient relative to size/quality, & they were also limited by small sizes of a gamecube disc. Also in your RE4 port video you were wondering why in the PS2 version the sound effects sound so compressed when a PS2 is disc is larger is larger than 2 Gamecube discs, the reason is that inefficient codec issue, i looked into the files of RE4 on PS2 & the prerendered videos take about 2.9GB of space with leaves just 1.5GB for the rest of the game
The GameCube port, I think when it’s doing the thing where the screen sticks is an SD thing. I own the port and don’t have that issue. Also glad you realized how good the GameCube port is. I was really surprised with your original review. I actually just playing the game with component on my Sony FV310 CRT in 480i and it looks amazing on it. I compared it to other ports on the same tv with component and found GameCube looked the best
