Alright, hear me out guys. Let's take a semi traditional Resident Evil game, and have it take place on a boat. What's that? Capcom already did that 2 or 3 times? Well, what if we have Jill Valentine almost spilling out of a skin tight scuba suite???

This game was the glimmer of hope that capcom can tune the RE machine back to survival horror. Remember this is a HANDHELD for the underpowered 3ds. Mind blowing. Such a great game

I'm surprised you didn't bring this up when you mentioned them, but, zombies were going to be in the game. If you go back to the original reveal trailer you can see zombies. Said trailer also had Chris and Jill pointing guns at each other other a guy whose tied to a chair. There's even a few shots of someone who looks like Hunk and maybe(?) ouroborous tentacles. People always talk about 1.5 or the various iterations of 4, but I really wanna know what Revelations story was originally going to be.
@AvalancheReviews
@AvalancheReviews 6 лет назад
That would be crazy interesting to see! I would have loved to have found more info, but I struggled to get what little I was able to include. I might be a fanboy, but i think zombies would have improved this game for me. Not sure why, but they would just fit the setting better in my opinion.

@@jakemontell.7415 I liked that detail with the Ooze with their big tube tongues. If you get a good look at it, you can see the teeth at the end of it. Honestly, Revelations one of my favorite Resident Evil games, and I could never really put my finger as to why, but I feel as though recently I figured it out. You said that the enemy design is sorta samey, and while I can understand that, just having this theme of creatures from the ocean hits a sweet spot for me, not to mention it was one of the first RE games I played, downloading the demo on my 3DS when I was 16. When I played it on PC, I was blown away, and it was the first time I payed attention to the story in an RE game instead of just skipping past or ignoring all the story while eagerly waiting for the next enemy to show up. This game is what started my love for the series identity as a whole, and not just for the "shoot not-zombies, big set pieces and bosses, explosions!" gameplay of RE4 & 5, and for that, it has a special place in my heart. And then Revelations 2 came along, and I heard you'd got to play as the glorious Mr. Jill Sandwich himself, and it made me love the series even more.
@mechadoggy
@mechadoggy 4 года назад
For me, Revelations 1 is my favorite because it really fleshes out the BSAA as an organization and makes it real. Also, the game has this whole cast of supporting characters through which we get different perspectives throughout the story. Plus, the game has the creepy mansion atmosphere you get from previous old RE games but on a cruise ship instead, making it different. Finally, this game has some ship tease and chemistry between Jill and Chris.

For me, Resident Evil’s story is a big part of what makes it fun. It’s totally over the top, with over the top heroes and villains, but that’s part of its charm.

Another awesome retrospective, however, I can shed some light on MT Framework as I'm a dev xD So check this out. MT Framework is NOT a game engine which is contrary to most of what you could find on Wikipedia. This means that it is much easier to be able to extend to work with different consoles and devices as it doesn't have all the features and bloat that a Game Engine has. MT Framework is a framework as the name suggests, it is a bunch of loosely coupled libraries that handle graphics, sound, physics and so on which makes it easier to swap out different portions of the library if they are a bit too robust for the game being designed with it. I should also note that MT Framework Mobile was used over MT Framework as it was built with the graphics, control scheme, cpu processing power, sound chips and other hardware with mobile devices as the main target. To sum this all up, A Framework is a collection of libraries and tools that are used to develop games and applications whereas a Game Engine is built specifically for creating games. There are pros and cons associated with both. For example with a framework, you'd have to still build a core engine for the game (which is different from a game engine) from scratch. A game engine handles most of the core engine aspects of the game development process and generally makes it so you mostly only have to do scripting to create your game.

I can further compound on this by asking all of you to look into something called QT Framework. It is a graphics library in c++ that is cross platform and very powerful. Generally, things in the software and game development world will follow the same naming conventions. It is one of those things that is rarely deviated from due to naming familiarity allows for you to actually understand what something is supposed to target. Unity Engine, Xenko Engine, CryEngine, Unreal Engine and most other game engines tend to have the name engine in them. It isn't really a standard to do that, but it is a general thing that does happen. Framework however, is an abstraction in which software providing generic functionality can be selectively changed by additional user-written code, thus providing application-specific software. A software framework provides a standard way to build and deploy applications. .Net Framework, Mono Framework, Boost, Juce, Chromium and many others out there tend to have framework in the name or in the description. There is one last thing to talk about and that is a library. A library is a collection of code and data intended for reuse. A library will generally cover a specific task such as only graphics, audio, physics or handling input. Basically, you start with a library. When you add multiple libraries together with some tools for assembling your game or application, it becomes a framework. A framework will become a game engine when you add more tools and a scene graph and world / level editor to the mix. This should add a little more insight into the development world and how we tend to distinguish things from one another.

I feel like most _RE_ titles don't have that much enemy variety and that it isn't really a problem. The bulk of your enemies are usually some form of "zombie" and then you'll have a small handful of other enemies that appear in certain areas, as well as a few "boss" class enemies. _RE4_ and later games, when they started using "intelligent zombies" mostly only had variety in the manner of weapon they might use, along the the "mid-boss" style chainsaw or executioner enemies. At it's core, 90% of the enemies are incidental "B.O.W.s" and as such are much more common and less threatening than the actual B.O.W.s that the viruses are used to develop.

@@AvalancheReviews Same. The location is cool and seeing the Hunters that early in the game adds tension. The flip side to that, however, is that the section gets too action heavy and eventually just throws hordes of the same enemy type at you. It's not the most egregious example of this type of thing in the series, but I don't think Capcom has ever really pulled it off a second time. The first, of course, being that part in RE4 with the villagers slowly breaking into the cabin.

I’ve been on an RE kick for a couple months now and part of that has been watching your videos. I never really played any of the games before I played 7 in March. Thanks to a timely RE sale I got most of the games and I’ve been working through them by chronological order. I just finished revelations 1 and I’m gonna start 2 in a minute. Really looking forward to Village. It’s been great to just get totally immersed in the resident evil world the past months. I really enjoyed Revelations. I thought the story was interesting and I liked the side characters like Parker and Jessica. Great design of some of the enemies especially the final boss. As someone who has been on a few cruise ships, it’s a perfect environment for a horror experience to take place in. Definitely check out the game, plus you get Jill in a wetsuit. How can you beat that? haha

Its sequel, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, actually has nothing to do with this game story-wise, it is however connected by its tone and structure. Both Revelations games take place between two main entries, they both follow an episodic structure, they both harken back to the series' survival-horror roots, and they both feature an arcade style "Raid Mode" unique to this sub-series. Takes place between the events of Resident Evil 4 and 5.

TBH this is the game that got me to fall in love with the series. the first one i played was 6, then i was looking for M and T games on the 3DS and found a demo for this game in the e shop. after 1 minute of the demo i was in love with the game, it was instantly at the top of my Christmas list. i remember opening my gifts and as soon as i saw this stopped opening gifts just to play it, at least until i was told to put my 3DS away and finish unwrapping my gifts. LOL Hell almost every console i have that i can get this game on i hav it. i have it of course on 3DS, PS4, Wii U, and switch. the only console that i can get this game on that i didn't get it for is my PS3, even though i already have it on everything else i am not against the idea of buying yet another copy of my favorite RE game.

I remember getting both revelations 1 and 2 as gifts off of steam, knowing that they were a different take on the resident evil main games I was curious so I checked it out. Revelations 1 felt more like Resident Evil 5 to me in a more simplistic story line as well as graphically just different. It felt like an old game graphically to me. I did like the characters but I was surprised at the ending of the game to me, it felt like there was more to the story by the time it had ended. I am looking forward to Revelations 3 whenever that will be, because it felt like they never resolved 1 to me. Anyway, great review man, keep it up.

So it's 2024 and I just finished Revelations for the first time on PC. We're past all the remakes and I've been say without a doubt that Revelations is still a great game. The reviewer doesn't even mention raid mode which is tied to the single player based on how many levels you beat. I personally am addicted to raid mode in both Revelations. This title mires resident evil 4 with resident evil 5. And if you feel how the movement is today it's comparable to the RE4 remake. What made this game great was when I beat it on normal I wanted to go back right away into new game plus with my weapons. If you're playing a resident evil game and it makes you want to go back and play it immediately after you beat it it's doing its job. So I'm going to New game Plus with my weapons and collect more parts for weapons to make them stronger and then play infernal after I beat it a second time. The game loop is all tied to raid mode so they work in tandem as far as unlocks and this game is just really fun. If you see this on sale or have picked us up on sale. You're going to have a good time. Put the headphones on turn the lights off and get ready for some resident evil Greatness. This is just a really good game.

Enjoy this retrospective series alot man but you're far too kind to some of these games, it's alright to be a bit more critical! Everything just seems to be "fine" or "not as bad as what people say", which I find hard to believe when it's applied to nearly every game in the series apparently.

You completely missed out on the 3ds motion controls. That's a shame. They are better then the switch, and they rival mouse and keyboard. I loved beating the game for the first time using re4 controls with full 3d, and then my mind was blown, like the head of many a now extinct b.o.w., when I found the gyro controls. It makes the gunplay the most satisfying I've ever experienced in a game! I have the switch version, and I appreciate the extra content(plus inferior motion controls); But Revelations is my favorite Resident Evil game!

Also, do yourself a favor and have it in Japanese with English subtitles. The story's so uninteresting with the bland English performances, and some special monsters talk! The english monsters sound *mundane,* whereas the japanese voice acting monsters sound luke demons from hell waiting to steal your soul! It's like *The Grudge* good! The Grudge, is a really silly movie, if you realize that those are just painted children making funny noises. That acting though...sends shivers down your spine!

I absolutely loved this game, but the only thing I genuinely felt cheated on was puzzle solving. the only "puzzle" i can really remember is the backtracking to get the shotgun. I really wish they had expanded the main ship environment and cut down on some of the other character's time. That would have just made this the perfect resident evil game for me if it had.

It certainly was more of a RE game than 6 in the traditional sense, but idk, it still had half of its body in the action formula and that god damn awful camera! Revelations is underappreciated in my opinion. Before Resi 7 and the RE2 Remake, this was definitely the title that came closest to bridging the old and new. Sure a few more puzzles wouldn't have hurt, but between the level design and key hunting, this was it. The design of the Queen Zenobia, in particular, is of note. The other RE games of this time all favored linear environments where, for the most part, once you left you weren't coming back. Always moving forward. Only Revelations had a fully explorable environment that continually opens up as you explore and progress. This sort of working your way out of the maze type design is preferable in this series over the linear style. I'm certain there are plenty of others who agree. It's the Spencer Mansion on the seas! While the series has used the "ship level" several times, this is inarguably the best one. I know a lot of people don't like the tv show style recaps, but I quite like it as something different. Not so much that I think it was essential to the game, but it did give me the feeling of playing through a horror version of an episode of 24, which is in no way a bad thing. There are some moments where the action gets a bit heavier than it should, (Looking at you Malacoda...) but for the most part the game feels like a survival horror. Creepy atmosphere, and decent boss encounters. The first time you encounter both the comms officer and Rachael are very memorable, tension filled moments. They really should've only used Scagdead the one time though. Fighting two of them kinda ruins something. Rachael, works really well at being a classic RE stalker monster! Not quite the likes of Mr. X...but still good. Lastly, as a reason to appreciate Revelations, you play as my girl Jill. I liked the Jill angle in 5, but it still leaves you wanting more of her. That's where this game comes in to give the player their Valentine fix. I'll close out this comment with the following statement: Here's to hoping she shows up in RE9!
@C6evolution2008

Very refreshing game after what was the abomination that was 6 and ORC. Visually appealing, good mechanics even with tank controls. Decent story although moderately illogical. Wide variety of weapons while toning down available ammo. Has some of the creepiest monsters in the series (comms officer, Rachael, Norman and some others). Revelations still has one of the side games in Raid mode-especially the ghost ship levels which provided me endless enjoyment. The ending leaves you with something that could have been implemented in future titles, but we are left hanging again. I will agree we could have done without Grinder and Jackass. I think there was a very wide variety of enemies in the game though. Overall much better than the game I’m about to slam in your next video. Lol

Thanks man! It's always good to be a bad influence on other collectors. HA! Ya know, I've tried to do a few shirts with RE title screens on them, but the prerendered 2d images don't look as good upscaled, vs the sprite work I usually work with. With the sprites, it looks retro on a shirt, but with some 2d art, the color banding and compression artifacts, just make it look like a low quality print on a shirt. Kind of sucks. It would be cool to have access to high quality art assets, and make a shirt out of those.

@@AvalancheReviews I think it's partially my own fault, but the early trailers seemed to imply this would be something along the lines of RE1 on a boat, and I think even in the final product, all of the non-boat stuff seems tacked on, with seemingly less care/time given to them, like they came much later in development. Total speculation on my part, I could be (and likely am) wrong.

Seeing all this anime bullshit meet 24 was quite something. RE6 took the peak bullshit award in terms of story but this game came very close. The 3DS controls with both the 2nd stick attachment and the later New 3DS don´t work btw. The sticks move at a different speed for some reason so you have to make due with default controls. The 3DS mercs collection frankly had better feeling shooting. It´s also kinda crazy that the already bewildering scanning gameplay was moved over to the HD remasters. Revisiting the game was fine but the followup holds up much better today.

I actually like Revelations 1 more than 2. It's faster and less clunky overall although I Revelations 2 has better graphics and is more terrifying. They nailed it on the 3DS and I think it has translated seamlessly to consoles. Revelations has my favorite raid mode of all the RE games; leveling up, unlocking, and modding guns and unlocking characters while ramping up the challenge has kept me playing the games for years now and I still love hopping into matches and starting a new file from scratch. I didn't realize why they did the episodic thing back in the day because I wasn't tuned into all the other episodic stuff going on. I just thought it was a sort of novel new way to tell the story and while at the time I was more blown away by the visuals than the story I had a hard time following the story. I wasn't used to playing a game that changed characters and locations and had it's own world of words. Of course after playing it many times and even just watching the cut scenes it's such a simple story to follow and it's almost as if there are no surprises. I think the first time I played it I experienced the most fear but even then it was just a bit tense; nothing compared to the scary factor of RE Revelations 2, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5, or really any of the RE games. I'd say Revelations is the least scary and most accessible game for a general audience. A perfectly ok place to start playing the series though I'd always recommend REmake for 1 or Resident Evil 4 for someone who wanted to get into the series as they have their own stories that are also easy to follow and get into lore without needing much backstory. In retrospect I think that the handheld episodic thing makes a lot of sense and was smart of the developers. I think switching between characters from stage to stage made me feel less attached to all the characters in the game and on my first play though it made the story seem far more complicated then it is. Still I love the Revelations series. I think it has the best graphics of any 3DS game ever made and it shocked me that it launched so close to the start of the 3DS generation. I thought the 3DS would be getting loads of bigger console type experiences but Revelations was a diamond in the rough; nothing surpassed it's visual fidelity and production values in my opinion. Definitely a top 5 Nintendo 3DS game in my book.

RE: Revleations is okay, the issue is the pacing in the story is maybe one of the worst in the series. The mystery is "where did Chris go??" and you just ...get that solved by cutting to him randomly and he's okay. So, you know you're wasting your time on the boat except to just escape. Then you cut to the two goons and their overacting isn't endearing. Then you cut to the flashback where you're gunning tons and tons of hunters down. I keep seeing "RE went back to survival horror!" Did it? I've never machinegunned hunters down like that and nevermind had so many action sequences where you're holding down the trigger. It also wasn't scary, at all. Creepy enemies? Sure. Sometimes. The scanning mechanic is tedious as well, slows the game down. Unlike Metroid Prime where you're scanning enemies and getting some lore or weakness info you're just working to build up an extra herb. You should have only played as Jill through part 1, then after the mystery is all sorted? THEN play as Chris, something like RE2 if anything. It's a fun and good game game, I like the ideas they had but I don't think it's survival horror. Especially when you're, again, rewarded for getting kills. It was a technical marvel on the 3DS and whatever they cut out was less likely due to time and more to do with it being the largest game on the 3DS in terms of data(it also made the game cost more to buy). Those bloody end of episode cutscenes probably didn't help that any.

I got my 3DS at launch and there wasn’t much to play at the time. The game I was most excited for was Revelations though, I played the Mercs game and it was a bit of fun but I had much higher hopes for this game and personally I think it was a huge success. It looks great on the weaker hardware and it’s a very well crafted spin off. Sure, it’s not on par with the best of the series but that’s not what I was expecting. I just wanted some RE fun on handheld and the game delivers that while managing to maintain the feel and look and not feeling like a massive downgrade from the mainline entries. The Raid mode also offered a ton of fun. I’ve also played the HD port but the 3DS is my favorite way to play the game.

First of all THANK YOU for doing this reviews. It really puts a smile on my face everytime i see the notification for your videos. It's really awesome that there are still such big fellow RE nerds out here in youtube. I rememeber when i heard Capcom was doing a new "retro" RE and man i was hyped as shit, then i realized it was for the N3DS... But then, after a while it came on Xbox 360 and since i owned that beauty i bought right away. I freaking loved. And i know, it's not one of the best RE ever created but for me (and after the disaster that RE6 was) this was like a send from heaven. It has many flaws but at the same time it's in my top 5 RE games ever. The graphics were really good for the time, the music was melancholic and fitted the tone of the game. The controls were finally improved and all the customization for weapons and items gave me hours and hours of joy. Ye3s, the plot was crap, but in good, goofy, funny way, not in that dark, moody and awfull RE6 style. And yes, some characters were annoying, like that clown looking guy (and don't even get me started on the awfull voice acting), or those two weird creepy guys thatyou control in a mission. But that was nothing compared to been able to play as my lovely love Jill Valentine... i mean... DAT ASS haha. Parker was a good addition to the cast also. Jessica on the other hand... i hope she never returns! The other thing i didn't like and that you didn't mentioned was a huge issue for me at the begining. The way the camera keeps moving, simulating being on a ship was really bad for me. I was having movement sickness for a while and i felt that effect was not necesary even if it was kind of cool to see it for a couple of minutes. It really amazes me how you complaint about the controls and the way characters move in this game but didn't do the same for RE6 (in my opinion those were terrible beyond believe). I guess that shows that everyones opinion and experiences with games are different haha. And yes those "previously on" were fine the first time but in multiple playtroughs are fucking annoying as hell. I agree with you in that the enemy variety was really bad, i got tired of seeing and killing the same white monsters over and over again, and plus, they really wanted you to fight hunters.... wich for me was the absolute worst since hunters are my most hated enemy in the entire franchise. I know they are cool and dangerous but i died so many many many times thank's to those assholes since the first RE that i can't help but hate them with all my soul haha. Can i ask why you didn't even mentioned the AWESOME Raid Mode??? For me that was a huge part for what i really loved this game. I'm not a multiplayer/online type of guy and to be honest i never even liked the mercenaries mode (i'ts cool but, i HATE when games makes you do something in a timer, for me that's just no fun) but Raid mode hooked me like no other mode. I spent like 120 hours playing it and even got to N°1 in the ladders for my country (Chile) and N°4 in South América. My poor disc got almost destroyed out of so much use haha. Anyway, sorry again for the long post. As always good review and keep the good work sir. PS: I still have no idea what the big "REVELATIONS" were...

First off, thanks for all the love man! Second, ya know, I never thought about that, but that's a good point. My wife usually gets motion sickness real bad from games, but I've never had an issue with it. That being said, I can understand why that first part would effect you that way. There was a shit ton of camera rocking and swaying. As for the raid mode, I just never have gotten into RE raid/mercenary modes. I enjoy being skilled at RE games, but I like doing that in the context of staying alive and experiencing the game world. Something about racking up points for kills, just doesn't get me going. That's pretty insane you ranked number 4 in all of South America! Now I'm self conscious of my gameplay looking scrubby as hell to you. HAA!

You're welcome sir! i just love your videos and the work you're putting on them. By the way, i'm not a good RE player. I mean, i have my moments, but overall i consider myself just average. I guess the reason i climbed so high in the ladder was because i was stubborn as shit. I played and played and played. i think for this tipe of mode that's the key factor. I can uderstand that didn't work for you, same way mercenaries never worked for me. It has nothing to do with the old and classic RE games but for me it was incredible fun and addictive. It's weird that rade mode for RE Revelations 2 didn't grab me as much as the first one, even if it's objectively better in almost every way..

I found this game to be decent. I thought the scanning system was really dumb. I also never got into Raid mode. It could have been a fun co-op adventure, but they obviously had to go with single player being a 3DS game. I still have the original misspelled spine on the case. Great review as always.

Thanks man. Yeah, for some reason, the scanning system just felt like a chore. At least it wasn't just me though.

the scanning system seems like a chore until 50-60 hours in and you OCD start wanting to scan in every game looking for hidden objects ;p so for revs2 they put in "scan" but basically called it something else and worked it in a dif way lore-wise, and put even more hidden G00DIEZZZ flashlight, and ESP, I think. so much fun. the flashlight concept was so much fking fun. I ended up doing that more than Claire! In case ever when you were a kid you fantasized brutally destroying zombies with a 5 d-cell flashlight yolo

My ocd had me scanning every damn room I walked into! I agree though, Rev2 handled it way better. Felt less "gamey" to me, and fit in with the game world.

I found the RE7 enemies more....scary I guess, but hey, that's a pretty subjective matter.

Honestly the mandatory dodge mechanic which is "dodgy" on PC and the never ending enemies even after clearing a room killed my motivation to complete this game. Which is a damn shame for me. I wanted to play it for years.

Considering it was a 3ds game is impressive. But I was bored to death with this title. Enemies are bullet sponges and combat takes forever. And the recap is just crap.I need to play revelations 2 which I heard it's better.

I wish they gave those two guys, whose names I forgot, more time. They were fun to play as. You know, the tech guys.

Nat Knutson I think their code names were Jackass and Grinder. I actually liked them too and their goofy dynamic lol
