You can tell the difference between franchise vs. independently owned. Back when COVID hit, the Chalet Barbecue on Decarie and Sherbrooke shut down. I began stopping in every so often at a St Hubert's in Lachine just off the 20 on my way home from work to pick up some good old greasy eat-with-your-hands rotisserie chicken with the sauce brun. And it just tasted off (and uh not just because I made the mistake if sticking the carton under the seat of my scooter after a full tank left fuel vapors into the compartment). But, well, it was edible enough. Then the Chalet opened up its kitchen for take out last summer. I waited in line, walked home with a breast meal with fries, and *fucking wept with joy* when my taste buds got hit with whatever special something something they put in their chicken. Now, I actually don't mind stuff like Tiki Ming and Manchu Wok. Mainly because I have a weird fetish for mass-market Asian food that makes me think a Fu Lam is a dandy holiday meal spot. (Don't judge me.)

Its a shame because I have childhood memories at St. Hubert. I try to go local too, but is it all just a pipeline to conglomeration?

Funny I sold my MTY stock a few weeks ago. I think their meteoric rise is starting to show cracks in their accelerated growth. In terms of coming to Quebec, considering how GOOD food in Montreal is for the price (you can eat almost any kind of food for a modest price), you're then not only competing against "that other burger place". And food can be really bad when travelling out west in my experience. The language is a thing (I speak both fluently but will always say that french is unnecessarily grammatically complex). And I mean, if you already operate in English, you have more growth opportunity in the U.S.. However, each state has it's own laws and regulations so... maybe you're just voiding the language issue. Surprised that Chipotle isn’t here yet. I’m sure it would be popular on Le Plateau. We do have Quessada that’s is starting up, and is basically the same. Chick-fil-a would probably perform well replacing closed KFC. Sonic Drive-In , we have nothing like this. White castle, could maybe works in poor neighborhood cause mcdonals isn’t as cheap as it used to be.
