So the developers didn't have a " thing" for Hersheypark while developing RCT3. Hershey actually helped fund the game in its developments so in turn the developers made sure there was a "Hersheypark" influence in the game. The same goes for RCT2 where there is Six Flags influence. Again during development. Six Flages helped fund the game. Now move on to Planet Coaster. That game had funding from no other, you guessed it! Cedar Fair! Hence alot of the coasters and modles are based off Cedar Fair coasters. It's all a big advertisement really. Your literally play and interacting with advertising while playing these games.
RCT3 is by far the game I've sunk the most hours into. Despite its graphics and coaster building system being outdated compared to Planet Coaster, I do think it still has its own unique charm and niche by letting you make waterparks and implement animal exhibits into your parks, something you cannot do in Planet Coaster, and of course all those more unique coaster types can't be made in Planet Coaster either sadly. Anyway, I'd say the splitting coaster looks the most interesting as far as coasters I'd want to see get made irl.
that drifting X-Car would've been fantastic for an Initial D-themed coaster at Universal Studios Japan or something also HELL YEAH ADVENTURELAND MOMENT
I think this game really holds up, the scenarios are kinda laughably easy, but that just allows for more creativity faster imo. I love how far Frontier has gone with planet coaster, but the simplicity of this game allows for you to create a satisfying park without needing to be a dual engineering/art major
There's only really a few hard-ish scenarios, New Blood i've personally had problems with, since there's barely any land, and you have to deal with free rides. Which in turn, makes it an upward battle to meet the 600 guest limit on the Tycoon objectives
Wouldn't say easy ether. There is new blood which gives you a hard challenge since rides are free so you have to rely on stands and there is one that is on islands where you have to build a certain coaster at a maximum limit but it is bugged so you have to start over from scratch and build multiples of them to beat it as well as pay off loan early
I feel as if this game aged a lot better than most people give it credit for. Everyone always talks about RCT2 as if it’s the only good game in the series, but I think 3 holds its own really well and expands on its ideas. It’s also the most forgiving, user friendly, and content focused, which is why it was the one I played the most as a kid and is still my favorite. RCT2 is special for sure, but RCT3 feels even more so, especially since it was from a completely different development team that succeeded at it. It was so influential in fact that Frontier had to buy back the rights to the publishing rights of this specific game from “Atari”, as they want nothing to do with it. I’m very surprised to hear that all of the coaster types used in this game were actually based on something, I always thought that some of them were so outlandish because they wanted to test the game’s physics and engine, which isn’t entirely wrong to think like that by the way since this was a PC game back in 2004, so it was a very ambitious game for its specs and time. It’s a shame that they still haven’t put any of the prototype designs into Planet Coaster yet though. I know they aren’t relevant anymore and won’t be built, but they would still be very cool to use and see. Anyways, I’m very happy that this game was re-released on PC and Switch. It actually plays on the latter surprisingly well once you get the hang of it, and it’s really good for people like me who can’t afford decent computers anymore. (Seriously, most of them go into for over a thousand dollars, it’s absurd) It warms my heart to see this game not being forgotten by not just the fans, but the developers themselves too. RCT3 Complete Edition and RCT Classic should be preserved and constantly re-released for generations.
Couldn't agree more. Between all the new coaster types and the new mechanics added in the expansions (pools and animals), there's just so much to do in this game. You're very right about the approachability and user-friendliness. When I was younger, I definitely played RCT3 more than RCT2 because of that - I felt like I had so much more creative freedom with the new terrain tools and the 3D graphics. I had a lot more fun than I excepted to re-visiting it for this video. Maybe this is just nostalgia talking, but I feel like it has a charm all its own. Thanks for the comment!
@@gustavrshThe graphics don’t look any worse than a game like Super Mario 64, and they had to replicate that look for a much bigger and complex game. In fact, it still actually looks better than that, and you don’t need to look far to see drastic comparisons, you only need to look at the water used in both themselves. Again, I think both aged significantly better than many people give them credit for, especially now with the 90’s 3D graphics art style making a comeback in other games. The blocky polygons and low res textures just gives video games from that era a lot more charm than if they were a lot cleaner otherwise, like Planet Coaster. (Which looks good in its own way and is similar to RCT3 in art design, but it still doesn’t capture that style perfectly, it was a lightning in a bottle situation) Basically what I’m saying is that both the PS1/N64/early 3D PC games are just as nostalgic as pixelated games. One can make a case for how RCT2 didn’t exactly age too well with how restrictive some things are either, especially in regards to moving around in special dimensions, but I still think both RCT2 and 3 are classics in their own ways. Maybe I’m just a sucker for those more crudely made 3D games since I was born around the time those were in their prime, but I still think they look nice when done right. The best example of early 3D games I think is stuff from Rareware, with games like Banjo-Kazooie, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and so on, and they still look just as colorful now as they did when they first came out. Are they perfect? Definitely not. Would they all make for great remasters like the Crash and Spyro games got? Absolutely yes. But it’s not like they’re not good as is, especially for the times they all came out, that’s just not true at all. Besides, not everything is about the graphics anyways, it’s about the gameplay. How it is to actually *play* the game is a lot more important, and all 3 original RCT games play spectacularly.
@@JNattyBoiHaha, no problem, and thanks for reading all of it! I hope you can also one day do a video going over the unique coaster types of other games like Planet Coaster. :)
I knew where most of these coasters came from, but some of them - like the Splitting Coaster - have baffled me for years! It’s crazy to see how forward thinking the developers were, especially considering most of these concept-coasters would’ve only been revealed within a year or so of release. As for what I’d like to see in real life… the Splitting Coaster! I think there are so many interesting things a park could do with it. I’d also love to see a park tackle a true Robo Coaster - I think the extra dynamic of a coaster track could make for an epic dark ride/coaster hybrid!
I agree! The possibilities of the Splitting Coaster are endless, assuming it's even possible to build in the first place from an engineering standpoint. As for the true Robo Coaster, I'm still holding out hope that Universal will one day give it a go. Thanks for the comment!
I've noticed that the Ball Coaster prototype shown at 10:00 actually even resembles Scarlet Bean, the pre-designed Coasterball that can only be unlocked by completing Scrub Gardens (Wild's first scenario). Something neat that I think is worth mentioning.
You're absolutely right! I quickly played through Scrub Gardens to see for myself, really cool detail that I wish I had known about before making this video. Thanks for the comment!
@@JNattyBoi You're welcome! Sorry for replying a year later, but I only just found some interesting information on SBF's Tower Coaster (named the MX875 model). All of this comes from RCDB. The Tower Coaster that traveled the fair circuit (where it was named "Cool & Fresh") was acquired by a Dutch park named DippieDoe Attractiepark in 2007. It was rumored that it would be part of a new area at the park, but it was never set up, remaining in storage until the following year (2008), where it was moved to the Australian fair circuit. It seems like it was more recently purchased by Wonderland Eurasia (called Ankapark up to a month before opening, after the city of Ankara, Turkey it was located at), with the same paint scheme and theming of the cars in the photos. It was named "Migfer" (Turkish for "helmet") and set up with some theming elements, but Melih Gökçek, the former mayor of Ankara who came up with the idea for the park, was put under a corruption investigation related to usage of funding, including for the park, and was removed from office, resulting in construction being halted in 2017. His successor is not in favor of the park, but acknowledged the investment put into it and suggested that its future be determined by a referendum. Little information is known after this point, but it seems, as recent as May 2018, the lease was granted, and an offer has been made by a company to purchase the park. The park does appear to have operated briefly in 2019, with some of the other rides having photos of people on them, but as of 2020, the park, and all 17 of its coasters, is standing but not operating.
Wonderful video! I too thought that many of these coasters were far too bazaar to be based off of real life concepts. Also, thank GOD Alton Towers went with B&M for Nemesis for their first "secret weapon" and that plans fell through for that janky Hershey Park project! lol
Thank you! While it would’ve been cool to see an Arrow Pipeline coaster operating at a real park, you’re definitely right, Alton Towers was definitely much better off going with B&M in the end lol
6:06 fun fact there was an intamin half pipe model installed on top of an eight story building in japan that sat for more than 10 years and never opened because its operation caused unpredicted lateral forces on the building's structure.
Playing this game as a kid I’ve always wondered where these crazy coaster ideas came from, especially in the wild expansion pack! Thank you so much for making this video dude, very well done! :)
Now THIS is the video I was waiting for! Fantastically done! I would love to see that splitting coaster built, that's such a weird and cool concept! And that revolving tower coaster, what the heck?! What a great video, this is the only game in the series I can properly play, so it's an invaluable resource. Thank you! I saw the robotic coaster and I said "Wait a minute, that's Harry Potter!" And I was right!
There are some truly weird concepts in this game - I often wondered where they came from, thanks for the research! But the towering coaster existing in real life looks like a torture device...
Certain RCT3 ride reskins DO have real-world counterparts. The "shuttle" corkscrew trains are based off the original Disneyland Paris Space Mountain (before it's conversion to Hyperspace Mountain), the "Dragon" inverted trains are based off the now-defunct Dueling Dragons (Universal IOA), and there could certainly be others if you look hard enough!
Still my favorite coaster game. I have made some monstrosities. I have used the sandbox to build an Extended Coaster that used every square in the map and used the Vertical type to make a 1869.68 ft drop. 52.36 Positive g's, -27,27 Negative G's, and an intensity rating of 27.33. It would kill any riders but very fun to make.
I'm one of the few "lucky" people that have ridden the tower coaster. It's first fair was in Amsterdam in 2001 and it's last was in 2003 (only traveled in the Netherlands) It break during the ball part of the drop, it braked during the drop and after the loop. It was more broken down than running I heard it is still somewhere opperating It was called cool&fresh
That first halfpipe coaster pic is at Elich Gardens! I remember when it debuted there. Also that flying coaster there was also only open for a year before being walled off for ages and ages before being dismantled
As someone who was a huge fan of RCT3 back in the day (and produced the first mod tools for the game) its great to know that the rides in the game were inspired from real world rides. Love to see a video talking about the real-world inspiration for the other new tracked rides in the game (including the water slides from Soaked!)
Atari bought the rights to use Hershey products in their game. That’s why there are so many Hershey references such as Storm Runner and even the Hershey kiss lamps you see in the real life town in RCT3!
Amazing video dude. The amount of research and backtracking you’d have to do to get the information you gathered on these rides, plus writing it into a script for your video. Highly appreciated. Subscribed and easily one of my favourite coaster channels already.
I’m giggling like an idiot because “kuka” means trash in Hungarian… the Germans played themselves On a more serious note - great video, very well done!
I know RCT3 doesn't get a lot of love compared to RCT1 and RCT2, but it was to me one of the best in terms of coaster design because there was a decent sized modding community for it which allowed people to make some truly magnificient designs. There were custom supports, custom train sets, and a whole bunch of other cool stuff To me, RCT3 is actually my favourite, even though I discovered the RCT franchise with the first game when I was just a 6 year old kid. Also ironically, the Stormrunner design was actually the preferred choice for re-creating Top Thrill Dragster because of it's very smooth hills
There's only one trilogy that I know that wasn't hit by the Curse of the Threequel, and that's the BttF Trilogy. god DAMN, those movies just got better and better.
Thank you! I had pronounced it incorrectly up until I finally visited the park when I was 15. Had never heard anyone say it before then, only read the name in books!
I feel this. I gave up trying to make my splitting coaster look nice/duel properly, it really is such a pain to get the tracks to line up. Very satisfying when you do though!
GUH omg Summer Air hit me right in the feels at the start - very enjoyable video! When I was younger I just assumed loads of every coaster type in RCT3 already existed somewhere, it wasn't until I started properly getting into theme parks/rollercoasters *recently* that I discovered a lot of them were either based on a single unique coaster or coasters that didn't exist outside of concepts at the time!
I think it would be fantastic to have a real coaster with a thrill lift *and* a rotating tower! Imagine how over the top that would be, and how complex the layout 😂
Everyone credits RMC with being the first to develop the "single rail" coaster to its magnitude. Maybe the serphant coaster concept was one of their inspirations.
amazing video, I had learned a fun fact about the game early on that said that all new types had some real world influence, whether it was concept, prototype, or actual model. I also want to see a video on all the coaster types in Planet Coaster
Alien 3 slander in the first 12 seconds of the video :( I can't escape it, that movie was good and people are just disappointed it was more like Alien than Aliens. Oh also yeah roller coasters and stuff great video as always yes yes👍
First, thank you for this follow-up! Second, I don't see that thrill lift element being physically _possible_ in reality, at least with as long of a track as it has in the game...
Liked and subscribed, such a well put together video and I learnt so much and didn't intend to learn anything interesting... Wow! Thank you for putting this all together, it's making me want to download it again and re-live childhood memories.
I see SOMEone is a fan of CinemaSins 😉 Appreciate the shout-out to Long Island! I never got into this game for some reason, unlike the first 2. I think I was just really getting into FPS games at the time; I didn't even get a Nintendo console between GameCube and Switch, and barely played GameCube. Super informative video, thanks for all the research.
Tbh it would be kind of boring because PlanetCo doesn't have any prototype or obscure coaster models, except for the T-rex. I like PlanetCo, but frontier really did the bare minimum when it came to the coaster variety in that game. So much is missing even after $50 worth of dlc
One accelerator not on that list it seems is the dueling accelerators, launched by linear motors. Had a short life as Batman & Robbin at Great Adventure. But it was plagued with upkeep issues and supposedly dual launching could dim the lights in the general area around the park.
I mean... all this video showed me was, how much more content you got back then for your 20-30€ expansion pack... And Today... well, we got Coaster Planet and Zoo Planet. These games could have easily been added together and form the next big expansion for planet coaster. There will be a Planet Splash or something in the Future, I guess!
Yeah frontier really milked the hell out of those games. There aren't any unique prototype coasters in PlanetCo either, except for the T-rex model. Would have loved to see an axis coaster or a surf coaster in the game
