Spider-Man: No Way home is around the corner! With 5, possibly 6, villains on loan from other Spider-Man movies, Tom holland sure does have his work cut out for him. If only Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man could lend a hand, right?
Presales for this movie have gone through the roof - the hype is real - and if its good it could be one of the biggest Spider-Man movies ever. With that in mind, I want to rank every Spider-Man movie worst to best. Oh boy, I’m gonna put some dirt in your eye.

I think Harry’s “surfboard” in 3 was super cool and makes sense why it’s so functional. Harry is a lot younger than Norman was when he became the goblin, and naturally more athletic and coordinated, which is why Harry would use something that allows him to use those natural skills. But that’s just me, I’m no film critic

What I love about the pumpkin bomb scene with Harry is that usually when someone Peter cares about or has a connection with his spider senses don't work (think venom and how in the final act he can sneak up on him as the symbiote obviously connected with peter). But when he has the Black suit and Harry and Peter fight for the second time he clearly dodges the pumpkin bomb without looking and throws it back showing how twisted its made him that he no longer considers Harry a friend and now a threat.

Andrew Garfeild's Spiderman is one I really like. I like his suit the most, I like his quips the most, I like the little moves he makes to seem more...spider-y. it's sad that Andrew's Peter Parker was iffy at best and that the plot was so mixed.

During your time going on about TASM 1 you mentioned that Peter is a douchebag who only looks out for himself, his family, and Gwen, and I agree, however I don’t think that’s a bad thing. If you read Amazing Fantasy no. 15 (the literal first incarnation of the character) there’s one panel where Peter says something along the lines of “(uncle Ben and aunt May) are the only ones who’ve ever been kind to me! I’ll see to it that they’re always happy, but the rest of the world can hang for all I care!”. There’s nothing wrong with preferring the more soft spoken, kind hearted Peter of the Rami films ( and to a lesser extent the MCU) but I think that making Peter act like an actual teenager at least in the first half of the movie in the way that he does is not a terrible choice, especially considering that this reboot was a few years off from the last film, the last RAMI film, so even only taking into consideration the movies and not the source material it’s based on, I think having Peter’s personality be a drastic change from his last iteration just makes sense, doesn’t it? It makes it feel at the very least different which is exactly what the movie was going for, and, in that respect at least, it succeeded.
@RSRye

While I agree with your points on Peter's characterisation, I think the MCU was a lot closer to the original Lee/Ditko run than people give it credit for. In the sense of it being more like a teen comedy that happens to feature a superhero and how the world of superheroes was portrayed as this hip thing that Peter longed to be a part of (and was becoming a part of) and minimal angst about Uncle Ben.
@Stavrosaqm
@Stavrosaqm 2 года назад
I can see where you’re coming from, I actually really like HoCo and his minimal screen time in civil war, I think it brings a facet of the character that we hadn’t really seen up to this point in a Spider-Man film simply because he was in a larger world of hero’s, in a sense it reminds me a bit of Miles at first in the Ultimate comics, and in a way keeps the whole outsider type that Peter Parker was at that time in his life, he was an outsider to the superhero gig, they treated him like an incapable child who was out of his league (which he was) however by the end of the film he does manage to take down vulture AND make sure he gets arrested going as far as to save his life, a move that earns him back his stark suit and even gets him a chance at the iron spider. The whole problem with the HoCo isn’t even that Peter is like or unlike the comics, it’s that infinity war undoes everything that Peter went through and became because Disney wanted to have their cake and eat it too.

Yeah, TASM 1 and 2's version of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man is the most accurate to the comics and Andrew's acting just sells it so well. Watch any interview talking about Spider-Man and you know he understands it the most out of any other actor. Couldn't disagree more about TASM 1, firstly you mentioned the bit about the DNA being encoded to Peter, that's a plot point from TASM 2 not 1. Also, the bit about Peter being selfish. That's his whole arc. That's the entire point of the movie, Peter's journey from being a selfish person who only cares about himself to the hero we all love. Throughout the movie, Peter is selfish, he neglects his relationship with Aunt May and Ben, and as a result of that Ben ends up dying. After that Peter is after the killer, he is fueled by vengeance. That is until the bridge scene, where Peter saves a child, reunites him with his father and Peter sees how he can do good for people, Peter lost his father and he just prevented this child to have the same fate as him. After that he's more selfless, he even gets the eggs for May after the whole lizard fight at the end, and they share a heartwarming scene about how Peter has grown as a character. The Lizard part is pretty nonsensical though.

Yeah, he finally learns responsibility after he saves the kid on the bridge, and he learns he’s being selfish after his talk with Captain Stacy. There’s supposed to be an arc of him growing from being selfish to learning to be responsible. There’s an arc that takes the entire movie. I feel like people just ignore that due to bias as to what Peter/Spider-Man is supposed to be (due to the Raimi movies). I think you missed the entire point of Peter's character in TASM1. It's a much more natural slow burn of him transforming into Spider-Man. He doesn't become the hero we love and respect just because he's figured out his powers and he's got a cool suit now, he has to earn that title once he realizes what being responsible actually looks like, which isn't until an hour and a half into the movie. That being said, both TASM movies have too many ideas and not enough focus, so none of their ideas are given the breathing room they need to be successful. TASM1 in particular is horribly over-edited and the best character scenes were cut for seemingly no reason. Such a shame, because that first movie had plenty of excellent ideas, it was just bogged down by aimlessness and studio interference. Still, even Spider-Man 3 remains stronger than either film because it retains its focus throughout and it's much more self-contained.

Can't believe I'm defending Amazing Spider Man (well on second thought, it's the first one which I didn't mind), but what is everyone's problem with Lizard's motivation? How was it any worse than Goblin's vague "Let's join forces and...cause chaos or something" plan? *Edit #1* Chris Stuckmann compared Lizard's design to a Goomba from the 90s Mario movie. Now I can't unsee it. *Edit #2* K, now I'm gonna defend ASM2 lol. Peter not giving his blood to Harry is actually more of a selfless and reasonable Spidey thing to do because he's not gonna risk creating a new super villain who'll put the city in danger. *Edit #3* Here's my ranking, just wanted to throw it in here: #7: ASM2 #6/#5/#4: MCU Spider Mans, ASM1 #3: Spider Man 3 (Bad, but entertainably so + meme worthy as all 3 Raimi films are) #2: Spider Man (throw Into the Spider Verse in there if that counts) #1: Spider Man 2

@@tmac731 It even makes sense as the Lizard's overall plan is, essentially, Dr Conners' goal taken to an extreme due to the effects the serum is having on his mind. Add a dash of Lizard insanity, and you have a being who legitimately wants to evolve humanity to be like them.

Goblin and lizard both have similar motivations but goblins still makes more sense. Norman literally lost everything he worked for in his life like his company and power. It makes perfect sense why the serums insanity would make him want to take that all back and then some. He sees Spider-Man as a clear threat to that. Also Spider-Man 1 has an amazing theme of responsibility and consequences for your actions. Like after he let Ben’s killer go he payed the price. The first Spider-Man is packed with memorable scenes as well. The only memorable moment from tasm 1 I could think of is the library fight with Stan lee.

Andrew Garfield is my favorite Spider-Man, but he’s in my least favorite movies. I really hope they bring him back so he gets the fair shot he deserves, without Sony screwing up production by cutting and changing stuff every five minutes. I also noticed how his Spider-Man is exclusively in New York, while Venom is exclusively in California, so after No Way Home they could reasonably say that they’re both in the same universe. It’d be great if a potential TASM3 had Tom Hardy’s Venom in it to some extent.

Y’know what? I love the first Amazing Spider-Man. My dad was absent for a lot of my life, but I had a relatively decent support group to combat it. Peter had none, and I can easily see how I could have been that prick. And not being able to see the moment he becomes Spider-Man makes me think you went to the bathroom or something. He sees that something bad is happening, so he goes to investigate, because he is a good person, deep down, which was demonstrated at the start of the movie with Flash bullying that kid. He then saves a little boy from certain doom, and realizes that he can save people, not just hunt people down, especially after a conversation with Gwen’s father, in which he reveals how predatory and discriminatory Spider-Man’s current actions are. He then takes the name Gwen made on the roof and uses it as a symbol of hope. Peter is an asshole, yes, but that’s ok. I can see why he is. And it’s MORE impactful to me that he never catches Ben’s killer. He couldn’t avenge him, he couldn’t even get justice for him. He CAN save others though. The action is solid, and while I dislike the color palette too, a lot of this movie makes up for it. And if we’re complaining about Lizard, we also need to complain about Green Goblin. He’s not super deep as a villain, just very menacing, same as Lizard. Can anyone honestly tell me what Goblin’s villain plan was? Overall, seeing my personal favorite(not the objective best) at the bottom of the list stings. Especially when it’s behind TASM2 Also, yeah, so what if the suit from TASM2 looks like the Raimi suit? Everyone loves that aesthetic, they just added the comic eyes to make it the best live action Spidey suit. Sorry for the rant, felt like it needed to be specified though.

What frustrates me the most from TASM movies is that the emotional core is really strong. A reclusive kid gets powers and rides the power fantasy to the point that his uncle's death only makes him go deeper into it, but once he hears criticism he understands tahat he's not a hero and he's just looking for revenge, so he decides to go out of his way to save a kid and finally turns into a hero; but it comes at the cost of his lover's dad, the man who inspired him to change. His decision to break his promise and stay with Gwen fills him with guilt and fear and it ends up biting him back as he watches her fall to her death while he's barely unable to save her (my favorite scene from either movie). However all of this is thrown to trash because of the villians being garbage and not complementing any of the emotion, the whole parents plot and just horrible execution. Also I really likes Andrew's Peter but that's just my preference.

Yep, this is literally true. Original run of the comics has Peter being a "Douchebag", in the words of FullFat. His whole original arc is literally about overcoming that. Making Andrew's "Peter", way more accurate than Tobey's. Sam Raimi completely disregarded the source material in order to tell his version of the story. Which is fine but that is not the real or original Peter Parker as it was created by Stan Lee. Raimi tells a better overall story but is not loyal to the source material at all. There is good and bad in every version.

The biggest problem I see with today's... well, everything. Media, television, movies, writing, etc., is that it's so cynical. Like, it wants to be more "realistic" by being self-referential, gotta make complete sense (even though it's all sci-fi and fantasy in the end), and sometimes have other agendas (such as selling more toys with more suits). The "heart" of older movies just feels lost sometimes, and Into the Spider-verse felt like it made the closest blend between good comedy and heart-felt, difficult moments that define the characters.

I really think they are they best because they knew what they were.. they weren’t mcu movies to build other movies.. they weren’t grounded in reality.. they were comic movies.. the colour also, is just so beautiful. And you know its a raimi movie. I’m still sad we never got Edgar wrights antman

My only issue...you say more super hero movies need to be 90 minutes...how many of your top films are? 2 hours can work just as fine and offer more character development...i dont know..i feel venom 2 pushed itself a little quick despite how fun it was

My favorite is probably Into The Spider-Verse. I've always been a big fan of animation, & the sheer innovation of it's CGI in comic book styling. It's also my favorite story wise. I like miles a little more than peter in most cases. I love the other spider-people as well. I really really can't wait for the next one.

Your amazing spider man critique was the only most infuriating thing about this video analysis. Like, Peter acting as if a douche at first, is very comic book accurate. It’s only until a little after Uncle Bens death when he begins to understand his true persona and his true meaning; to help those in struggle in the name of uncle Ben. Your opinions were just pretty ignorant in this whole first segment. Also, how in hell did the Amazing Spider-man 1 rank the worse from AMS2??
@TeamTowers1
@TeamTowers1 2 года назад
Not to mention Uncle Ben is kind of a footnote in the original comics, he was there for his death to act as a lesson for Peter (note it's Ben's death, not Ben himself, that teaches him about power and responsibility) and is the quickly moved on and all but forgotten about until, later stories started treating him with greater reverence.

just because its comic accurate doesn't make it instantly good,
@TeamTowers1
@TeamTowers1 2 года назад
@@coryclark9120 Maybe, but I think understandable why people find frustrating when others shit on the Amazing and MCU films for "not being what Spider-man is meant to be", for things they do that are actualy closer to the source material than the Raimi films.

My least favorite bit about TASM2 is the last shot of the trailer, where he starts fighting the Rhino mech, he slings a manhole cover at him. making us excited for a Spidey Rhino fight. Which also happens to be the actual last shot of the movie ffs.

Man I really like TASM I thought Andrew’s Performance was amazing oh well
@MildlyPerturbed
@MildlyPerturbed Год назад
Actually the TASM movies are heavily based on the Ultimate comics, so the selfishness Peter shows before he grows to be more responsible is ripped straight from the ultimate comics. Peter Parker is supposed to be a selfish, witty, self-isolated loner, with anger issues and a temper. Sure he’s a nerd, but that’s not an all encompassing personality trait. Peter’s not supposed to be a dorky wimpy nerd who never grows out of his dorkiness. Peter is supposed to become more confident as he gets older. Also Peter Parker and Spider-Man aren’t supposed to be two different personalities, Spider-Man is just Peter Parker turned up to 11. Also your criticism of Peter being too cool doesn’t make any sense, in the comics, Peter rides a motor cycle and many girls pine after him. Andrew Garfield’s portrayal is basically the most comic-accurate Spider-Man AND Peter Parker, whether you like it or not. You may not like admitting it, but Andrew is the best at embodying the comic book character, both as the 616 and ultimate comic versions! The TASM movies have many problems, but they’re far too overhated. I really don’t understand why people treat it as if the movies murdered their entire family, and show it so much visceral hate. People don’t give it any chance to tell the story it wants to. It’s an adaptation of the comic story, not a reboot of the Raimi movies. The movies have a lot of good moments that often outweigh the bad (this is the same way people may like Spider-Man 3 as well). Most of your takes seem heavily biased, claiming that Andrew’s portrayal is bad when he actual embodies the character the best. The Raimi movies, while good, are not the source material, the comics are! So Andrew is a good Spider-Man AND Peter Parker.

Love your list. And in agreement with it in general, but some placements, I would certainly change up. Including: 9. ASM 2 8. ASM 1 7. Venom 6. SMH 5. SM3 4. SMFFH 3. SM1 2. SM2 1. SM: Spider Verse Carnage is off list because havent gone out of my way to watch it yet. But I cam believe its probably better than the original without overtaking the Holland films.

Carnage really lends itself more to Comedy as opposed to actually being about Carnage, it's alright but it's Carnage doing as much as Venom did in Spider-Man 3, he's there but thats it.
