A friend of a friend of mine works on The Patrick Star Show, and he was saying it was the most creatively fulfilling working on a SpongeBob project has been in years, because they are no longer bound by the rules of the old show and can do something fresh and interesting. Despite the ups and downs in current years, it's very cool to see fresh takes on these characters and world
It's sort of neat seeing someone talk about these spinoffs in a manner that is not completely negative or just using Stephen Hillenburg as a way to completely write them off.
The Patrick Star Show solos most spin-offs of popular franchises IMO. What started out as a rather generic, cut-and-dry show has really come into its own as a celebration of what animation and artists can do if given free reign.
I'm currently working on the Patrick Star Show as a story artist, and I thought this was a really great retrospective! The recent critical reception for the latest episodes has made me and the crew so happy. Everyone on the team are massive cartoon buffs and living Spongebob encycopedias! We all want to show to be the best it can be and the freedom we have to express our individual artistic influences is just so awesome.
Thank you for watching and commenting! That all makes sense, I can really feel all that freedom, passion, and love in the recent episodes. Glad you enjoyed the video too! A lot of the comments I’ve gotten are from fans who were inspired to give TPSS a chance so I hope it keeps catching on in the fandom!
It's incredible to see that The Patrick Star Show, despite only having a 3.6 on IMDB,most of the episodes are having magnificent ratings of 7 to 8.6/10 on the website, which is somewhat funny ironic and interesting to see.😂
@@reggielacey2235 I know what I'm talking about because I've already watched many new episodes of the show, and there are a lot of good episodes that are worth watching like Bubble Bass Reviews,Face Off Model, Chum Bucket List, Home Eech!, Fitzpatrick and others. And I don't continue to believe this thousand-year-old rumor that the creator didn't want spin-offs,knowing that there is no concrete evidence that Stephen didn't want spin-offs,and what Paul Tibbitt said on Twitter was nothing but nonsense. And not to mention how infuriating it is to see several talents who work on this show being aggressively attacked on the internet because of this idiotic rumor.
It actually makes me feel a lot better knowing that Hillenberg knew of camp Koral. I was against it for a long time because it seemed they jumped on making spin offs immediately after his death and looked very disrespectful from an outsider perspective. Good to know he at least knew it existed
@@ElvusmiwPaul Tibitt Also Worked On Dreamworks Ruby Gilman Teenage Kraken. It's Sadly A Underatted Film Edit: Paul Tibitt Left It's Production In 2021
Remember when Pieguyrulz went into his full Joker arc cause of these spin-offs? He acted as if Hillenburg was his best friend and went psycho on anyone who didn’t believe the misinformation and rumors he spread despite them being debunked 5 years ago
What I really enjoy about the Patrick Star Show is that it is not afraid to experiment with it's animation or story telling, heck that's what it's built on. This way, we're given a lot of fun an interesting things you would never find in other children's tv shows
I’m really happy to see the huge 180 opinions on The Patrick Show have taken, and how sharp and funny the show’s writing itself has gotten. Nice to _not_ have just complete misery in the SpongeBob community every so often
"Kamp Koral takes place in an alternate timeline" Oh god,I just realized they're doing a multiverse, because that means the Patrick Star show could take place in a timeline where Patrick is the main character instead of Spongebob...
There's something genuinely heartwarming about the fact something like "The Patrick Star Show" was able to become a sort of oasis for a specific brand of animation talent that the industry rarely ever fosters nowadays, with the mix of old and new staff effectively allowing that energy to be passed from one generation to the next. Just imagine the kind of impact TPSS could potentially end up leading to years from now. If we somehow get a new wave of board-driven cartoons by then (especially of the wacky, ultra-cartoony variety), we in many respects will have this bizarre, corporate-conceived spinoff to thank for that.
The Patrick Star Show is easily one of the best things to modern SpongeBob. In a sea of corporate greed, I’m glad the show’s crew actually put love into the episodes and the characters.
As someone who’s been following this universe since it was first announced, this video is really great at a giving a fair but not toothless look at these projects. My favorite aspect is the soundtrack inclusion, both in the background and calling it out occasionally. It’s really nice to see a SpongeBob video not just use You’re Nice or Twelfth Street Rag as good as those tracks are.
14:27 Funny thing is about that Elf Bowling statement, is that Tom Kenny (SpongeBob) and his wife Jill Talley (Karen Plankton) were both in Elf Bowling.
I normally wouldn't comment but I wanna thank you for making this video. I've been really cold with SpongeBob recently and the recent news that the Sandy Movie wasn't particularly good really made me think I had just outgrown Spongebob and had no idea what I'd even watch if i wanted to try and give the newer stuff a fair shake. (For the record, I dropped out around season 9 of the main show and have seen only a handful of newer episodes since then and still haven't tried either of the spin off shows.) But after watching this, I actually want to go after the Patrick Star show and give that a watch. I wouldn't have bothered otherwise so...thanks, man.
What sucks about the Sandy movie, Is the fact that it had scenes of Spongebob sniffing poop and tickling feet, RIGHT AFTER TOM KENNY CONFIRMED SPONGEBOB IS AUTISTIC!!!
I think the main issue with these spinoffs is how bar the latter part of the patrick show they're all just more SpongeBob, none of them are willing to omit any of the main cast or significantly change the format.
X: Babies has always been the most hack spin off idea, maybe second to X: In Space, so Spongebob Babies was always going to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Possibly the most aesthetically unpleasing way to give us more SpongeBob.
50:06 okay this merchandise point - it feels weirdly common for a medium that used to gorge on merchandise? It feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy where they put out no merchandise and then investors go "there's no merch money being made, [unalive] it."
It’s baffling cause SpongeBob is one of the biggest brands ever. It’s odd that the spin-offs aren’t treated the same way. I can’t even get a Patrick with green shirt plush.
I think the SpongeBob season 13-... era (Literally Post-Modern Spongebob or Post Threequel SpongeBob)should learn something from the Patrick Star Show, like instead of rehashing stories from the previous seasons (Screw you Squidiot Box) they should start try to be more experimental and take more risks with concepts, ideas and new styles of comedy to make the show more fun and fresh nowadays.😊
Even though Hillenburg knew about the spin offs, they kind of feel pretty pointless since the only reason why they exist is because Nickelodeon is too cowardly to produce a new original animated show.
Out of everything I never expected the Patrick Star show would be redeemed. I think Stephen Hillenburg would be proud that the show found its place as a pretty unique show rather than a carbon copy of SpongeBob but worse.
I like that you take a more positive viewpoint on the more frowned upon material relating to Spongebob. The juxtapose I never thought I wanted, but was glad to get!
13:55 I prefer the original show’s title card method as well, but I do understand why they did it. These episodes are forced under a 10:44 timeframe unlike the main show which can be so flexible as to have an episode run 30 seconds shorter than usual (see Karen for Spot). They probably went this route so they don’t have to waste 10 extra seconds that could be used for a gag or two.
I never watched Kamp Koral, not because it looked bad, it just seemed like more of the same. Same creative team, same writing style, only without the appealing drawings. Changing up the staff behind The Patrick Show was the best thing that could've happened to the series. I always liked it well enough, but going storyboard-driven turned it from good to GREAT. Along with Smiling Friends, it's the best cartoon comedy on at the moment. The Sandy Movie sucked, but, y'know, you can't win 'em all.
Saw the Sandy Cheeks movie, it was amazing, I don't get why people hate it, I'm just happy that Sandy got SOMETHING considering she's the most underused of the five main characters
I remember him saying in one of his later podcast episodes that he regretted making that video so quickly without learning all the information. Also he retired from RU-vid a couple years ago
i'm a really big hater of the sandy cheeks movie but i have to say every point made in this entire video is a good one, and i actually found myself agreeing with a lot of the stuff said
I appreciate the dedication to watching all of the new SpongeBob shows as well as giving modern SpongeBob a chance since most people don’t. There’s some merit and passion in these projects
Old thumbnail: the infamous nicktendo logo on the thumbnail and it has 3 spinoffs on the thumbnail kamp koral the Patrick star show and saving bikini bottom the thumbnail only on the chapters: the infamous (again) nicktendo logo on the thumbnail up there it says “SpongeBob spinoffs” in SpongeBob font and there’s 4 characters SpongeBob and sandy in 3d Patrick and squidward in 2d animation
the way i see the Patrick star show vs kamp koral is that the Patrick show is where the writer's experiment with animation styles and writing whereas kamp koral feels unnecessary. i respect the patrick star show for willing to do whatever. It feels like the spongebob version of uncle grandpa and it is hitting its stride.
Kamp Koral would have been better with kid voice actors, to be honest. The adult voices make them sound like they're all still 20-to-30-something. If you want a show similar to Kamp Koral but with kid voice actors, Some of my friends recommend Let's Go Luna! Now sure, it's a PBS educational show, but it's created by Joe Murray (creator of Camp Lazlo and Rocko's Modern Life, the latter Hillenburg worked on) and it had Peter Hannan (creator of CatDog) working on it. Oh yeah, and the titular moon is voiced by Judy Greer.
Ok this is unrelated to most of the video but elf bowling the movie being mentioned is really funny because of Tom Kenny voicing in both all of these and that movie
It will forever piss me off that Squidward isn't depicted as being enthusiastic and goofy in Kamp Koral, you know back when he should be young enough to have a positive outlook on life. He had to live a life of disappointment and misery to become the jaded, cynical asshole that he is in the present. Having him be the same way as a kid is just fucking boring and uncreative.
The overall consensus is that the Patrick Star Show is one of the better things to come from the Spin-offs. Kamp Koral has barely gotten much attention and the recent Saving the Bikini Bottom movie's reception has lean more towards the negative side.
As someone who noticed your comment on a They Might Be Giants a month or so ago i feel the need to tell you that i did indeed notice your They Might Be Giants reference in this video. keep 'em coming
3:53 Honesty my problem with Camp Coral is that it FLIES IN THE FACE OF CANON! In one of the first episodes Spongebob meets Sandy for the first time. I think fans would've understand (esp older ones) why Sandy isn't in CC because she wouldn't have met Spongebob and CO yet. At LEAST do an angle where she got memory loss at the end of the season thus explaining why she doesnt remember meeting any of them. Unfortunately thanks to THE 3rd Spongebob movie (the one where they all reminsce about camp coral) that's not going to happen...
I always wanted a sandy cheeks spin off for years and came up with many of my own ideas for it and then nick makes one, a movie and it turns out to be one of the worst things to ever come out of the spongebob franchise and am so disappointed
I recently got roped into a subscription to Paramount Plus and not even the terrible interface can detract from how much I've enjoyed The PEAKtrick Star Show
I weirdly wanna check out that Patrick Star Show now because of this video of yours. It looks dumb, but in a entertainingly fun way. And I’ve been loving some animes with dumb a dumb sense of humor in them lately (like “My Deer Friend Nokotan” & “100 Girlfriends”). While it’s calming to see that the spin-offs weren’t really hated that much by Stephen as clickbait articles say he does, announcing those spin-offs not too long after he passed away was kinda a dumb move. It’s like the Nick executives were trying to make it look like they were waiting for him to die so they could milk the franchise.
ive been pretty close to actually watching the patrick star show ever since the nostalgia critic episode but seeing what a celebration of creative animation it is i think im ready to take the plunge! also i think the 'oops all prizes' gag is rlly funny, and idc that it was prob just trying to capitalize on the meme bc i still think the meme is funny too
While I’ve only seen a couple episodes of the TV spin-offs, I found myself really underwhelmed by Saving Bikini Bottom. It didn’t feel like the movie Sandy deserved. For plenty of people, the biggest problem was how SpongeBob’s role in it was dominated by one-liners, but I don’t think that’s as annoying as Sandy barely being the main character in her own movie, with only one of her new family members being well-defined too. It felt like that interview Vincent and Marc gave where they weren’t allowed to do episodes light on SpongeBob for a while, manifested into its own production micromanaged by outsiders. Every couple years, the “Cartoons Written By Artists” VS “Cartoons Written By Writers” discourse kicks up again, but Saving Bikini Bottom makes me happy that SpongeBob has had a hefty taste of both now, even if it’s better for a majority of it to be “By Artists”. But from what I’ve seen of The Patrick Star Show, I’m actually really happy it exists, to be a playground for artists and siphon some of the Post-Sequel zaniness into its own entity. I haven’t been watching the new SpongeBob stuff as much, because it’s hard to keep a positive frame of mind around it when there’s this much content and it’s so inconsistent in quality. It’s sort of why I’ve never been a big fan of cinematic universes in general. But I remain hopeful that the people who intimately understand this world can remain in control for as long as possible, and however SpongeBob looks in the 2030s, that it’s still creative and fun.
8:50 DON'T YOU DARE DISS CRAIG MAMILTON LIKE THAT, FOR SHAME! Loved the video, I've been meaning to go through and watch all of the various spin-offs, especially the Patrick Star Show. Keep it up!
15:22 Not to be confused with the book written by Melanie Watts. 32:58 Nice crack there too haha 37:55 Um, Feral Friends from 2017 would like a word with you. Do YOU feel old yet?
Mm never thought of how the Patrick show is basically just Uncle Grandpa. 🤔 I mean i like Uncle Grandpa, didn't particularly like the Patrick show though.
One contributing factor to the Muppets longevity is that each show and movie is set in a different timeline with no official canon, whatsoever. This allows each installment to stand well on its own. The first three films are even about the characters meeting for the first time. That works for them. But for SpongeBob, I’m not buying it. I mean, the brand doesn’t seem to have anything that screams, “Cinematic Universe". Besides, the ocean is only so big. How many more stories can you tell?
My biggest pet peeve is when RU-vidrs have text on screen for 2 seconds forcing me to stop, go back, and read what was said.. and it always turns out to be something they couldve just said outloud. Enjoy your stuff Nick but godamn chill it with that crap
While I like the Patrick show (I think it's better than current SpongeBob lol) when I watch it I can't help but wish it was it's own show with it's own characters completely unrelated to the almighty money making sponge.
