av0cad0 he looks like he’d having a panic attack in every scene is because the actual actor Bill Hader who plays him genuinely was having a panic attack every time he played a character especially Stefon.
@@misschanandlerbong753 sure, i guess the n word is worse. but just because something is worse than it doesnt make it suddenly okay to use a slur against people with a condition that makes them targets of ridicule at every moment of their entire lives. do you have any empathy at all?
As a gay club kid in the early 2000s, this is exactly how I felt any time my family would be like "How's life in the big city?? What have you been up to?" and honestly not knowing what to say without sounding like Stefon.
@@algallegokids, this is called “projecting”! Al is berry berry sad and worried about what would happen if HE were to express his sexuality in a different way so he has to impose a feeling of shame on OTHER people so he doesn’t feel so bad about keeping his secret 😉 so anyway the original commenter didn’t insinuate or suggest any shame in their comment- in fact I detected closeness with family, a sense of humor, adventurousness, and fun!
His ability to channel this character is absolutely incredible. His nervous energy, body language, anxious fidgeting, and even his breathing are all spot on.
That happened to me a few months ago. After the marathon, I suddenly became acutely aware that Bill Hader does at least one guest voice in basically EVERY ANIMATED THING EVER.
i love how whenever seth says something like "you're doing great" or "relax you're doing great" that's literally seth calming bill. edit: also, the costume department deserves praise for putting bill in eyeliner 😍
calming him? if anything I thought he was trying to get him to break even worse. Lorne hates charaters breaking for some reason but it often makes for timeless content
I hope they release more are there more of the gay couple skits I really love the gay couple from New Jersey and the gay couple from New Jersey in the military and I've seen the maine one and I was wondering if there were more about other states
If you go to the snl website you can find every sketch he was in. Just go to the "sketches" section, scroll back a few seasons, and click on his picture. You're welcome :)
I watch these 'Stefon' clips over and over! My late sister (died 2014) and I LOVED Stefon and laughed our asses off! They remind me of happy times with her!
Love Bill Hader for Stefon, but we should give props to Seth Meyers for not breaking during any of Hader's shenanigans. You'd have to have a pretty good grip on yourself not to break. Also, when Seth says, "Relax, buddy you're gonna do great." I feel as though he's speaking to Hader, not Stefon. Bill, as we know, has a history of crippling stage fright.
@@AshleyandSkooter yes, he clearly was. I have had anxiety attacks before and you can tell by the way that he is shaking and moving his arms that something is wrong. Also, he takes very deep breaths and he overall looks and acts in a different way than all the other stefon skits.
he was shaking during the skit before that one too :-; however, the stefon skits are probably best case scenario for having an attack on tv and having to perform through it - sitting there, reading hilarious descriptions (that he genuinely seems to laugh at) and the only other person performing with him is a friend. it also helps that stefon’s normally odd behavior masks most of it. it would’ve been much worse if he was doing another skit while walking around and with more people.
You have not been witness to "The Seth Show" or whatever his after hours program is called. He, is not funny and might be a factor, in not breaking. His Brother, Josh, however, is funny (he was, on MADtv, anyway, as was everyone, else, during his tenure:):()
Agreed I would have broke I laugh too easily and Seth is truly a great friend for reassuring him that's he doing great when Bills anxiety was especially more apparent
I never realized that Bill Hader had such bad anxiety. When I watched these clips I just thought it was part of Stefon’s character that he was so jittery and shy
but bill hader has done loads of skits in which hes cracked up but hes never been anxious. im like 99% sure it's part of the character since the role is literally someone who is anxious to be on the show
I got second-hand anxiety in the second clip of Weekend Update when Bill covered his face and shook his head, and it was so nice that Seth gave him constant reassurance so that he could power through it.
I just love how Seth always tries to reassure Bill, he's too sweet. And it's terrible to see Bill almost overwhelmed by anxiety in his second appearance at Weekend Update. I'm so happy he's doing better now♡
@@minioop2 I disagree, maybe it's because I suffer from anxiety too and recognise that pattern... If you notice, he barely laughed during the second appearance :/ But yeah, we can only guess, they're the only ones who actually know
@@minioop2 I mean, realistically it's probably a mixture of both, but at least part of it is definitely down to anxiety. Bill's said in a few interviews how anxious he got on a regular basis while doing SNL. In the second Stefon appearance especially there's several signs that point to him being at least on the verge of an anxiety attack - he rushes through a lot of his lines, he fidgets quite a lot (not just the normal 'Stefon' tic of fixing his hair and covering his face but he seems to constantly be wanting to occupy his hands with something), his voice is at a slightly higher pitch and a little strained right from the start, his hands and arms are shaking (quite badly at one point), he doesn't laugh as much as normal, his body language is very defensive (again, more than normal), and he throws in a "please" in response to Seth saying he'll wrap things up. Still, as a fellow performer who suffers from anxiety attacks, I hugely admire him for powering through it and disguising it well enough for this to even be a debate. Apparently there were several instances of him having panic attacks either just before or even during sketches while he was on SNL and I swear you'd never know anything about it if he hadn't admitted it. The man's a powerhouse...
@@CornRaked that's not even remotely true. Bill Hader is one of the more comfortable people on screen. He's laughing because of what Mulaney is typing on the teleprompter.
@@DN..11 It's a bit of both. Hader has said he had anxiety about playing Stefon at first as he didn't want to offend alternative subcultures. You can see him uncomfortable in the first few WU segments. And as a tic he did bring his hands up to his mouth. Seth "calming" Stefon was in fact Seth calming Bill. But as his did get more comfortable with the character (from repetition and positive feedback) that nervous tic became a "character trait" to help Bill hide is laughing. And the world is the better for it.
That is not actually true. Especially since you write “whole character”. The voice is from some barista where Hader got coffee every morning. But the whole “hottest, new club” thing was from some random mail a fan wrote to John Mulaney.
@TommyGlint I thought he said the look and the voice was based off the barista. I might be wrong. You're right though the act of nightclubs was from someone else.
I hope when Seth Meyer’s show returns to normal they’ll have Stefon on the show to talk about all the places that have opened after lockdown has been lifted
"relax baby, you're going to do great." i love how seth tried to calm bill throughout- he got really nervous but it's so sweet to see seth reassuring him
My favorite part ab this is you can SEE how stefan is created into an established character and how Bill Hader becomes really comfortable embodying him and adding his own flair. The difference between his update debut and the rest of the updates as time goes on is incredible.
Old comment, but it's so true. Stefon starts looking at Seth like he's a snack at some point, but it's not in the dialogue, or even acknowledged by Seth. Hader was manipulating the character of Stefon and it manifested in future scripts.
SNL in 2010: "Lol what if we invented weird gay clubs and strange kinks?" SNL in 2019: "Straight up making sketches about cake sitting, pig boys, dominatrix marriages, and gay club appearances"
I love Bill Hader's real anxiety leaking into Stefon's character so perfectly. And Seth Meyer's sweet comforting: "You're doing fine Stefon" 😍 comments.
My favorite part about this video is hearing the applause and laughter go from just politeness to genuine, excited laughter, Stefon's voice get more and more Stefon, the jokes get weirder, and Bill Hader breaking more.
Bill Hader has the biggest heart in comedy. Mulaney’s writing for Stefon is weirdly brilliant, but Hader brings this strange creature to life in a way that’s lovable and even beautiful.
Glitter Grasshopper Hader has said in interviews that he almost had full blown panic attacks in the first few Stefon performances, Seth’s words of reassurance are genuine and unscripted. It’s awesome to see where he is now though, he’s grown into the character and into his own talent amazingly
After learning about Hader's anxiety plus panic attacks it got a little hard watching those first few stefon skits. You can tell how anxious he Is - especially at 4:48 when he looks as if he's panicking a little. I have anxiety and horrible panic attacks so i know how he feels :(
He started by getting panic attacks and Anxiety from being a correspondent on Weekend Update, to writing, directing and Starring in his own Critically Acclaimed show on HBO (Barry, which I may add, he does an AMAZING job acting in. You really see his range in that show and his ability to control a scene🤌🏽. He is tha 🐐of his SNL CLASS.
Pretty sure I recall reading somewhere awhile back where one time on SNL Bill’s anxiety was so bad during one skit he was actually suffering a blinding migraine, and had to be helped around the set by the others...I can’t imagine bein’ in that situation, especially as I’ve had migraines in the past, and have ended up in the ER every time due to how sick I got.
i don’t know if you meant that you’ve had a crush on him for 12 years, if you have a crush on him like a 12 year old girl, or if you’ve had a crush on him since you were 12, but either way same
*Some kind of half-remembered gay nightmare* *A family of normal people* *visions a dying gay man would have if he was under too many blankets* *ravioli hands* "What did you do this summer?" " *All of it* "
its funny cause even though they only did it once I feel like it's such a part of the character that I just imagine it on him for all of the other appearances
Bill Hader: "Hey everyone, my name is Bill and it's nice to meet all of you. Really looking forward to working with everyone." John Mulaney: "Ooohhhh this is gonna be sweeeeet....."
Rolling Stone magazine named him the best SNL character of all time. It actually did a ranking of the top 50, I think. I read it awhile ago. So it's a very popular opinion. :)
