And Bill wants it that way, because not knowing, makes the reactions and laughs more genuine. So he doesn't read the script/lines on purpose beforehand. Breaking character, became part of the Stefon character.
So much of this is wrong! lol, it's just a prank John would pull. He doesn't write the cue cards, Bill DOES read the scrips, and John DOES tell Bill what he changed, specifically so that he doesn't mess up reading them blind. It's still hilarious, but you're blowing it way out of proportion.
Seriously, Mulaney wrote Stefon's line? Howcome mulaney is so bland in his own standup? Just betting on not upsetting Middle America? I am genuinely perplexed.
@@DemonicMailman Granted, only enough to form a hasty opinion it seems. So, I'll give his work another chance then. If you can write Stefon, you certainly have an edge:). Thanks for letting me know.
@@arshgoyal6323 Sorry, I don't buy the argument about how looks define what comedy you can do. Sarah Silverman is as rowdy as they get, Bob Saget looks defies how savage his comedy can be. You could even say, if you look as "innocent" as they, and Mulaney, do you can make an even bigger impact if you comedy doesn't feel like you look. Anyways, I think we have to just put this down to personal preference. I spent some more time looking at Mulaney on the tube and while I will always love what he did with Stefon, what I have seen of him so far in his own acts is still a too soft for my own personal taste. It's cool that you and many others find him great, though. There's someone for all of us out there;)
@@the6ig6adwolf He and Mulaney wrote it together. But the parts where he messed up, Mulaney had changed prior to without telling him. He'd tell him as he was walking out to the desk, "Yo, Bill, I changed a couple things." He did an interview on it.
Seriously! Till I saw this vid, I had no idea Mulaney would write his lines. That "sitting on Billy Joel's hand til it's numb and pretend it's Bruce Springsteen's is pure gold to me! 😂
This is such a dumb comment! This year is NOT A DISASTER CALM DOWN, MANY ACTUAL DISASTERS WILL COME. This is nothing yet, stop all whining and crying wtf? Just say this is funny so and so, or just laugh. Always these "opinions" that think they are stating facts...
Honestly Bill Hader breaking is the vibe SNL needs to strive for. He broke pretty easily but it rarely felt distracting or unprofessional like when Fallon did. It was usually because something actually very funny was happening and it almost always made me laugh even harder.
That's exactly how I feel, but with Leslie & Pete. They break so unprofessionally it's not enjoyable to watch. But bill, bill is a treasure who cracks at the peak of the skits.
Bill Hader really took advantage of the fact that this show was LIVE. You felt like he was really feeding off the energy of the crowd. I know he was anxious a lot but he seemed to use it to energize his acting because he always found a way to make something spontaneous about his performance. This, in my opinion, is way he deserves to be known as one of the best SNL cast members of all time.
At first I thought it was like a nervous tic for Stefan, then as the breaking got worse and worse I realized it was a way to cover. But it's such a Stefan way to do it.
I love that so many of the jokes are clearly written to make Bill specifically laugh. A lot of viewers probably don't even recognize fairly arcane 90s references like Dan Cortese and Spud Webb, but if you're Bill Hader's age (as I am), that level of specificity in pop culture knowledge is hilarious.
@Leide Keine Dummköpfe i bet you're fun at parties. did you click on this video just to leave negative replies to a bunch of comments? maybe try doing something better with your time, like watching something you actually find funny
@Leide Keine Dummköpfe "calling someone out for being fake", is that what you think you were doing? Are you talking about Bill Hader? You're calling Bill Hader, a person you don't know, at all, fake, in a RU-vid video dedicated to him, and tells someone to "grow up" when they don't agree with you. You have to be making some kind of weird joke.
Bill is probably my all-time favorite SNL cast member. Every character he played is super memorable and he is such a great comedian and actor. If you haven’t watched Barry, I highly recommend it!
Every time he says the word "midget" I am reminded of the John Mulaney skit where John said he wasn't supposed to say midget in the scripts and I think that's the funniest part of it
@@bellalind6410 they did! They told him he wasn’t allowed to put it in. And he did last minute without telling Bill (watch the very first time Bill as Stefon says the word! You can see him thinking “oh s**t, we’re going to get into so much trouble!” When he sees the line.) because nothing happened, no complaints despite them both getting told off afterwards he kept adding the jokes/word every so often. They know that they wouldn’t get away with it nowadays which is why they wrote his lawyer Shy into the script when Bill and John brought the character back when Bill first hosted, and changed it to “little people!”
when bill tries to make that surprised face on the californians and realized how ridiculous he looks and breaks i lose my shit... ive watched it like 20 times and it always makes me cry
90% of the time, when bill is playing stefan, the producers don’t let him see what the script is so he reads it for the first time while doing the scene.
I'm not American and I've never been to California, so I don't really "get" the humour. That said, I laugh anyway because no one can keep a straight face :)
All the times Bill Hader broke as Stefon, he managed to keep the voice. It took John Mulaney himself to actually go out on stage and make Bill break the voice 😂

The way Martin Short looks at him when he says "her Downton Abbeyc kills me. He KNEW that would break Hader. I saw most of these live and it's fun to relive all those moments.
I cannot tell you how many times I've watched this video. It always brings me out of a bad mood. Bill Hader has always been my favorite SNL cast member.
3:34 is my favorite because I'm fairly certain that Bill just echoed Fred without thinking as a sort of improvisation, and then immediately realized how ridiculous it sounded and it cracked him up out of nowhere.
They both are! They both came up with the character based on two people they knew. And they both wrote the scripts. John would change them during the live show to throw Bill off! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eLZBFb8ic0Y.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V_uMssfSvho.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_C14eXiZQWo.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aWv7x5mJMA4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mg0UWxhJkfk.html
@Leide Keine Dummköpfe why are you spending so much time commenting about something you don't like? I hope you're doing better by now because you don't strike me as a happy person
@Leide Keine Dummköpfe of course you're allowed to criticize whatever you want. It just seems kind of obsessive how you're in all the replies, shooting down everyone who does get some enjoyment out of it. It doesn't make sense to me why you'd spend time on something you dislike instead of finding something you do enjoy. Idk, I think I'm looking into it too much. You're probably just 15 and bored.
The entire Human Suitcase bit is just pure gold: - 7:56 Seth had to compose himself and not laugh out loud because he knew what came next, I guess he had a bit of a laugh during the table read when this part came up. - 8:00 Bill progressively losing it as he explained what a Human Suitcase is. - 8:06 Seth yelling "Stefon!" after the bit. And all in the space of just 10 seconds.
Props have to be given to John Mulaney's writing. The joke structure alone is hilarious, but the completely random set ups are just so good. "A CVS, that became a Chase Bank, and then became a CVS again" shouldn't be so damn funny but it is. "Opened at gun point" and "built on a dare" are also some favorites.
@@abed_gambino0946 Haha I can see that, the jokes tend to be slanted to American pop culture. For some reason in America big cities have a habit of converting CVS drug stores (which are on like every corner in the states) to a bank, but then they'll just go around and randomly convert them back to a CVS a year later. We're weird.
Fallon: "HAHA... This is so funny! Isn't this setting up to be funny, you guys?! OMG, this is gonna be so funny! Wait till you hear what's so funny!!" Hader: "Ha... ha... (goddammit, lemme get through this sentence, PLEASE! Great, now I'm crying.)"
I am a simple 39 year old doctor from India going through a global pandemic and watching suffering all around me. I see Bill Hader smile, I click to relieve my stress.
Bill Hader is one of the most naturally giggly humans to ever exist. Check out his interviews with Conan, for example. I have no idea how he ever made it through any sketches without breaking.
She doesn't think it's funny at. all. that he's ruining the storied institution that is SNL for all time with his inability to stay in character. The whole time she's thinking, 'Wait til I tell Lorne about this latest incident.'
@@rusmiller816 actually you're totally wrong. When she is about to break character by laughing she will purse her lips and press her teeth against her bottom lip to prevent her from busting out laughing. You could see she does it twice in here and in several other skits and she even talks about it. To the point where it looks like an overbite
Vanessa Bayer is fantastic, but I love how Martin Short pauses and stares at Bill when he sees he's going to break. Like, "I know what is happening and I'm absolutely going to make it worse for you" 😂
Imagine the feeling you'd get if you were the writer who wrote the Stephan-skits and Bill Hader thinks the writing is so fucking funny that just seeing the words on a teleprompter makes him crack upå and break character. Pretty good praise for a comedic writer.
It’s Stefon not Stephen. And it was actually Bill and John not just John who created and wrote Stefon’s lines. Bill knew them off by heart until John decided to start fxxking with Bill and would deliberately add or change lines between live recorded dress rehearsal and actual live show! Don’t mean to sound or come across as rude and I apologize if I do but I wish people would give credit where it’s due. Everyone talking like John came up with and wrote all Stefon’s lines when that’s not true Bill and John created the character and wrote his lines. You just know from Bill’s face which lines are new because you see him look like “what the fxxk?” And looks mortified most of the time like the Vernon Troyer wedding line or a lot of the Midget jokes! The Michael Jackson joke is one of the funniest because you can see he really doesn’t want to say what’s written and actually looks like he wants to run off. The audience reaction to his and Seth’s faces gave away something was coming but didn’t know what because they both pull the same face at the same time. That still has me rolling when I think about it or come across the video! You can see they’re both thinking “too far John, too far!” Bill even try’s stalling to get himself prepared because they didn’t know how people was going to take that joke. It’s hilarious! 🤣🤣🤣 Edit: also a fun fact. Stefon was actually meant too be dressed the way Shy/John was dressed. They didn’t have a clue what Ed Hardy was, they thought it was some sex clothing line until the wardrobe department got the actual tops. So in homage to what he was meant to look like John went to a sex store with the wardrobe department and got an outfit that Bill was actually meant too wear as the character!) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eLZBFb8ic0Y.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V_uMssfSvho.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_C14eXiZQWo.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aWv7x5mJMA4.html

i am so happy to be alive, as a functioning adult, to see and get all these jokes live at the time. and to re-watch it now, floods me with great memories
Healthy and Loving Life part of the reason he breaks so easily is because the other writers (especially John Mulaney) changes/adds jokes last second from what they practice to catch him off guard when he reads from the teleprompter because they know he will break lmao
Vanessa Bayer is a total pro. She maintained her composure while everyone else was cracking up and even dared Bill Hader to try to act as professionally as her.
Stefan is supposed to play the funniest role, with funniest dialogues and a whole room of people are looking at him and laughing. How is he not supposed to break his character 😂
@@swapnilmankame Strangely, while I acknowledge that Bayer held the best straight face, I give her no credit for the accomplishment. For whatever reason, it seems to me that she just looks like she never laughs.
By now most people know that John Mulaney would add things to the cards to make Hader break, but I like that at 9:49 Bill was expecting John to speak in a soft effeminate voice like Stefan but instead just spoke in his regular classic-Mulaney voice which made him break as well.
SNL only had a few people that was truly awesome and truly hilarious and Bill Harder was one of them I have never laughed so insanely in my life I could watch all of his skits and characters and never get tired or bored
My favourite cast member ever. Mulaney is also my favourite writer to be on SNL and also my favourite stand up comedian. These two could make literally any media better by being in it together
Bill Hader's character breaks are the best. They seem genuine, and are funny as hell! Other cast members sometimes seem forced or faked to get a laugh.
I think it's more charming with Bill because he's clearly trying his absolute best not to break, but the harder he tries the stronger the break ends up becoming. Phil Hartman has to be the gold standard for not breaking no matter what kind of craziness was going on.
it is currently two am and i am pretending to be asleep but this video makes it so hard i have been shaking with barely-contained laughter for the past like thirty minutes or something because i keep playing this video over and over again, especially at the bit where bill plays an old man in a mobility aid genuine tears of mirth are making their way down my face holy shit
