Ocean Avenue is one of those unsung streets that make San Francisco different. The avenue is long - it runs from Mission Street in the Excelsior west 2 miles practically to the Pacific Ocean. It runs through at least three neighborhoods. The Ocean Avenue area has a colorful history and a lot of potential. And like much of San Francisco, it’s changing , a lot of the stores are closing due to street conditions in this video I’m walking the entire ocean ave to document its current condition

7:00 The El Rey Theater has been closed since 1977. It has been some New-Age church, ever since. The building has been preserved as a historic landmark. I saw many movies there, when I was a kid.

About 10 years ago, the city decided to rip-down all of the overhead power lines on Ocean Ave, as part of a "beautification" project. The street went from a working-class business district, to being pretentious and overpriced. No wonder everything went out of business.

The El Ray theater is a historic gem. It opened in 1931 but it closed in 1977. Then it was owned by a church group every since. So basically nothing was updated since 1977 that explains the original ancient colors, the windows and even the boards used to boarded it up. The church went bankrupt and lost the property. Now developers want to turn in into condominiums

What a bummer! There used to be a big Blockbuster Video store on Ocean Avenue when I lived in San Francisco back in the 90's and I used to take my pet English Fancy Rats-- Lucy and Ethel with me in costumes -- sitting on my shoulder-- when I went there. Most of the customers liked them, but a few would scream and run out of the store when they saw them.

@@eugeniaskelley5194 NO! The McD's kiosks do not accept cash. They are not like self-checkout machines. If that McD's still has cashiers, there is a kiosk option for, "Pay at the Counter". If not, you'll be eating somewhere else.

San Francisco is a great city that's died and been reborn several times already in it's brief history. At the moment it's recovering from the Dot Com Boom/Bust, and the shift to Big Box stores and away from small independent Mom and Pop shops like you used to see on Ocean Ave. Ocean Ave. represents a neighborhood business model that's gone obsolete. But the real estate is much too valuable to let it just rot. Most of these stores died because the rents grew too high. Try to buy a house in that neighborhood and you'll see what I mean.

When I went to SF in 2018, I stopped off at the Burger King on 35 Powell St. I was shocked to find 2 armed security guards to deter drug dealing and to keep patrons safe from over aggressive panhandling. The fact that I saw a sign hanging behind the register in a small souvenir shop, telling tourists that they will be charged a 4% surcharge to offset SF minimum wage mandates. This is what happens when you vote Democrat time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time again.

Hey Leo. Every one of these SF videos is shattering. The City is going down the drain and nobody is stopping the bleeding.. I lived in SF for more than 15 years, leaving in 2014. Three areas I would be interested in you checking out. Taraval Avenue was one regular stop. Mediterranean Market, Safeway, Victor's Bakery and a bunch of restaurants and shops above 19th Avenue. I also spent a lot of time on Clement St. Between 5th and 29th Avenue. Final place is Irving St. from around 13th to 25th Ave. Love these videos but sometimes it is difficult to watch.

Bro I’m born and raised SF, ocean Ave has not been a wonderful place since the 50s! And I’m sure you aren’t 100 yrs old! Ocean Ave has been a shit hole for as long as I remember, First it was the constant fear of getting robbed by the blacks living up the hill in lakeview, which still is a small problem, then ocean Ave morphed into a China town now, full of wannabe yuppies and transplants as well No parking Crowded And the McDonald’s still hanging on sucks too I can’t recall anything good ever on ocean ave.

Great job, Metal Leo. I love your addition of the inset 2021 street view clips, to show us what has been lost, especially the signage and store windows and displays. It must take extra editing time on your part to add those, so "well done and much appreciated"! I don't feel sorrow over the retreat of the big-box pharmacies and multi-mega-millions banks, but my heart breaks for the little local shops. The El Rey theatre ... sad. The cute Chinese restaurant -- sad. Don's Village Coin Shop -- sad. I also feel bad for the plants left to die in those unattended "bathtub" planters. Someone ought to liberate and rescue them. As always, you are doing fantastic work, keeping it real, grim as it is, in the dying City by the Bay.

@catyronwode thank you for your support and comments, they are words that keep me going, Yes is the small shops that get me too, I hope we can see the city reverse it’s deteriorating conditions for the better to it’s residents , adding the before and after pictures brings a better perspective to how it used to look and see the difference even if it takes me hours to do it , let’s hope we can get our city back

You should go to lake merced area, about a Thousand RV’s parked. Go to San Mateo county, specifically the Coast. Hundreds of RV’s in Pacifica. They are going to build Three homeless shelters and several homeless housing on the coast there. Goodbye beautiful beaches. Garage, drugs & needles on the beach now. Good luck going out for a day at the beach in San Mateo county now., You will Definitely either be a victim of some crime or witness one. Traffic is an absolute nightmare. They refuse to widen the roads so you are a sitting duck for criminals. SF has pushed their crime to SMC. Lol

It made a comeback from about 2008 through 2020. Once Whole Foods opened, lot's of new businesses opened and Ocean Ave was busy. That's no longer the case, thanks to covid.

I lived on Dorado in '85 for a year. That Target on the corner was a Safeway back then. CVS wasn't there yet. Fairly lively and decent neighborhood in the 80's at least. Closed Now!

When you read that note posted in that closed coin shop, I got a strong erie feeling. It's only SFO, Oakland, and Berkeley were most businesses are closing. If you go north to Roseville area, businesses are doing very well. There are no closed shops.

Grew up on Taraval St and went to City College of S.F. The citywide change I'm seeing is absolutely devastating. Some of us knew that shutting down the economy for 3 years over Covid was going to have severe consequences that would dwarf the number of folks who may have passed away from the disease.

Of course to that San Francisco businesses are closed I believe the number one reasoning is the landlords that own the building they're asking way too much money to rent or lease the places that they own.
