They banned cars in the centre of my city 40 years ago with the exact same results. They made some streets in the outskirts one way roads and the same thing happened with shops closing down everywhere.
I went to school at San Francisco Conservatory of Music in the 1990s and lived in dorms at Lone Mountain at USF. I later moved back in 1996 and lived in the Tenderloin at the Granada hotel. Never would I have thought this would happen to Market St. Hard to imagine ALL those jobs in banking, restaurants and retail are gone. ALL the ancillary services that those businesses needed provided jobs and income for people to pay their bills. There is a hidden agenda in effect by stopping the car traffic which was the final deathnail in that area. A previous commentor mentioned the "15 minute city" as their agenda. Yes, perhaps an income provided for a large group of participants to participate in trials of how such a sector of the city would operate is their agenda. That's so sad to see this.
"Banning" cars but still allowing cabs and buses is such a San Fran move. You remove most of the utility of the road but keep enough traffic that it still isn't a pedestrian only area, making the huge high capacity road unusable empty space most of the time. Brain damaged city management.
It's so funny 10 years ago I was telling my friends hey they gunna ban your cars in a few years and they just laughed at me and called me names. Now look who is laughing...
Decades of corrupt and stupid goverment has led to this. They simply haven't been able to grasp that the centuries old model of conventional periodic world wars, factory employment, affordable housing and proper policing has long since gone. Now, we have no need for large armies, virtually no low-skilled emloyment prospects and vital services such as healthcare and housing have been sold off for profit. Add to this the growing and virtually un-policed drug culture and hey presto!

In my car centric town, a lot of banks are closed too, damn online banking! Most of the time I go in to get something done they tell me I could have done it online. 🤦🏽♂️

i lived at 6th and spring (one block off of main). that one vacant property at 6th and main is where we got our dogs groomed. the area has really changed. we used to walk our dogs on main between 6th and 7th every night across the street from the cecil hotel.
Tons of retails spaces, hotels, banks, corporate offices - buildings that have 10 foot doors and gigantic lobbies with marble floors, courtyards and statues, rooftop gardens. Some of the spaces are beautiful inside and no one has been able to enjoy them for 2, 5,10 years. Thank you for documenting what happened to the city.
