I cut the take where I said this, but I think its really important: If any of this stuff is too expensive for you right now, whatever your situation is, start smaller, & build up to more expensive stuff. The prices of things I fix and flip sort of grew up with me, and a have been lucky enough to have stable job that helps support this habit, and by nature flipping things is self sustaining.

Both of you are very helpful to us midlife synthesists, so to speak. What has made RU-vid great for the last decade is the simple sharing of information out amongst each other. By the time my DM 12 arrived in 2020, I had enough solid foundation for understanding how to dig into it, that I found what I wanted from it right away. A little more RU-vid helped me figure out what about the sequencer on the DM made it obnoxious to people. This time, next week, I will be sequencing my Subsequent 25 with the Digitone Keys, while running the Model: Cycles through the filter on the Moog. I didn't even have to go to Guitar Center and poke at Korgs and DFAMs for an afternoon to figure out what I needed. Explaining "what stuff does" for the less informed... It's a satisfying program. Thanks, yo.

First of all, I would like to honestly thank you for your work. I am starting in this (not quite shallow) world of synthesizers and your videos are coming really in handy for my endeavours for understanding the sound. For I am not very experienced, I was inquiring myself if it would be possible that you make more videos recreating other synths with your precious Deepmind 12 (since is the only synthesizers that I own at the very moment) explaining more in-depth how-to attain certain sounds as the Wurlitzer, the Mellotron, the Synclavier II or the Solina (I just saw you already uploaded a video for that). Prior to misunderstandings, I would like to apologize if achieving any of the sounds that I have named is impossible due to the architecture of the Deepmind12 since I speak from the ignorance of it. Thank you very much. (sorry if I made any mistakes writing, for English is not my native language.)
@JorbLovesGear
@JorbLovesGear 3 года назад
Synclavier is nearly impossible, for a few reasons, mellotron and wurlitzer can be strongly suggested though. I cover a few electric piano sounds in some of my older deepmind patch videos, but maybe its time for a refresh! Maybe one video on emulating classic keyboards.

I think I'll get something predictably broke with that in mind. I'd love to make it as general as possible, sort of doing all the steps I take no matter what, and see where that leads. I see repair content as being useful for someone looking to solve the same exact problem, worry a bit about it being valuable beyond that

man I've been doing what you're doing and it's basically allowed me to upgrade literally everything I have, these last 4 months alone I've literally found so much insane shit I can't get over it. I've been learning about vintage electronics and it's been so much fun, I picked up a juno 106 for 200 bucks earlier this year and have been waiting for my tax return so I can actually buy some voice chips for it. Heck in the last 3 months I also found a tascam 388 and also a oberheim DXa, the tascam was saved from the dump and was absolutely beat to shit but I love how it sounds. I'm in the process of getting some more potentiometers for the thing so I can fix one of the channel cards that's dead. I agree with you about fixing your own gear, it really is magical because it really feels like "yours" or whatever. Going to school has made this hobby kind of hard but I'm fortunate enough to have the space to work on stuff while living at home (even though you might think I paid a fuck ton for those I paid only 50 more than what you paid for your juno for those, im on that broke student life). Facebook marketplace and offerup have literally been killer for this, these deals do happen if you're there at the right time and go for it. I'm the same way though, I've basically traded up and sold whatever I don't like and basically haven't spent much of anything to do it. Anyway wanted to say hell yeah this shit does happen and that this video is good!
@JorbLovesGear
@JorbLovesGear 2 года назад
Sounds like some excellent finds. I'm really jealous of the DXa, I haven't had any luck with drum machines. Have wanted one for awhile! Maybe I should be using offer-up too, with luck like that. lol Cheers, thank you!

Anyway thank you I hope you find one! I cant wait to get some 909 eproms for it.

Hey Jorb! If you haven't checked out the Korg Volca Drum, I think it is loads of fun. I like using it so much more than the Volca Sample. It does some unique things with the choke points and probability. With those 2 things used at the same time, it produces some interesting results for jam sessions and keeps things fresh. The way you create the drum sounds is similar to the DFAM, but with 6 instruments and 2 layers per instrument, you can do a whole lot more than the DFAM. Its got some useful effects and plenty of sonic possibilities to make FM drum sounds. P.S. I love all your videos and your playing. Thanks for doing them.

This area, especially living near NYC, is loaded with musicians and great music stores. Craigslist in this area is fantastic and have found many great deals. I also buy off of Ebay and a few buy and sell apps. I agree with you and have always shopped this way. I always buy things that I can make money off of if I decided to sell. If I were to list everything I got with prices, I think you and your viewers would get sick. Lol. One of the best deals I got in the last ten years was a Mackie 32x8 mixer with the meter bridge mint for free in NY. My recent deals I got was a Yamaha SY77 pretty mint for $100 and a 2 for 1 deal on a Yamaha SY22 with a Korg Microkorg for $190. My list would go on for days of great deals. To get these deals you do have to overdose on searches everyday. You have to jump on deals and try to buy as soon as you find them. Love your setup and deals. 👍👍👍👍👍

@@JorbLovesGear Yes being in a high population area like where I live near to is great. It does have its downfalls as there are other people like us shopping for items as well. This is really good. I much prefer this over RU-vidrs showing off their trophy synths. It's interesting to me that someone in their 20's has an interest in vintage gear. I see this gear through the eyes of someone who lusted after it when it was new (and prohibitively expensive), so there is a nostalgia component for me. Also, do you use all of that gear? I see people with large collections and I wonder how much of it really gets used? I really try to right-size my rig so everything I own is being used. If it's just sitting then I figure it should be sold to fund something else. I'm interested in your Volca Sample. If you ever do a video on it I'd be interested in seeing how you use it. Thanks

I have a sort of reverence for the old stuff, I find it exciting that these things were at one point contemporary products, and a lot of them stayed relevant. As far as using it all, everything gets enough time for me to learn it well before I sell it, but with this much stuff, it's impossible to use it all as much as I should. So that's one way I decide what gets sold, the stuff I stop reaching for. Right now, that means JX3P, all the moogs, and the PolySix.
@AlchemicalAudio
@AlchemicalAudio 2 года назад
I hear that sentiment a lot. You would be surprised at how easy it is to use all of your hardware synths when your studio is set up in a functional way, especially if you intimately know what each one is capable of and how to fit it into a track. I regularly, like 3 times a week, use at least 12 synths, often around 6 simultaneously. Depending on what I am working on, that number can easily double without any real effort on my part. Especially if you know how to layer sounds with intention. Flip a switch and push a button, and my master keyboard can play anything in my studio. I have different midi routings that allow for different sequencers to act as the master, depending on what my goals are. Easily switchable with the push of a button. I don’t have to turn on a computer, but can if I want to and everything within it is just as easily integrated and routed within my hardware setup. Some people buy things to look like a musician and some people buy things to use them. I know several people with large studios/collections and every one of them is using their studios as much as they are able to. Honestly, I have never actually met someone who is primarily a collector.

@@JorbLovesGear yo, don’t give up on the JX3P. They are making the Organix mod again which allows you to use the PG and midi in at the same time as well as have cc control over the parameters. Sell the PG and get a small assignable midi controller instead. I hated it at first, but now after owning it for 7 years it is indispensable. Gets used way, way more than the Juno 60 or 106.

Interesting video and thoughts! The thing that's keeping me from buying vintage gear is my lack of technical skills, time and patience. I think you need to have a certain interest in repairing electronics (as well as working with wood and metal) for some of those deals to really pay off (but if you do, it really pays off!). Would be interesting to know how many hours you spent repairing/refurbishing the gear, in addition to the money spent. Also, living in sparsely populated country, far from large cities, it's not always possible for me, due to the distances, to view gear in person before buying, which of course increases the risk of getting scammed. There's something to be said for receiving a brand new piece of gear at your doorstep, ready do unbox and use, knowing that it's in 100% perfect condition and there's a warranty and technical support if things were to go bad. That said I do buy used gear sometimes, as long as the seller seems trustworthy and there are good closeup pics (reverse image search is your friend!). With gear that came out less than 10 years ago, you can get some great deals on gear that's still essentially as-new.

Very true, a willingness to 'figure it out' really does go a long way. Something like the JX-3P was a whole weekend(or two even) focused just on it, cleaning keys, cleaning contacts, repairing a few traces, reloading the patch memory, soldering in a new battery socket, and building new end cheeks. You're right, that is something I should value a little higher, knowing if there's an issue, I can just call up sweet water. Good thoughts!

I also have the MPC1000 which is the brain/sequencer of the whole hardware setup. I have the Six-Trak and the X7000, I got them in a three week period time window. I really like to pair the Six Trak with the MPC and a BCR2000, that way I can control (bcr) and record (mpc) every parameter for each individual voice. It has quirky midi setups but the CC implementation is very straightforward, it is the first poly synth that had midi! I think the Elektron Analog Keys got a lot of its queues from it. And about the X7000, don't be so hard on it. It is one of the (less than a dozen) samplers - from all existing brands- that has a variable clock for each voice, along with the s612, s900, s700 & s950. It has a nice analog lowpass filter that just works. The keys are super easy to replace and are shared by a lot of keyboards, look for an article called "How to Replace and Repair Dead Keys on a Vintage Synthesizer Using K32U Keys". As stock it comes with only 6 slots for sounds which makes it nice to sample drum hits, loops and sequence from the MPC. Mine came really beat up and with a dead QD, I paid 300, when I opened it, I saw the RAM expansion installed! I already restored it and will replace the QD with an emulator from Sampler Zone. It will live in the other room where the vinyl records are, alongside an Akai S20 and an Electrix EQ Killer. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This last year after waiting and watching I got a Korg AE-1, a Korg Poly 800, and an Alesis Micron, all for 200 S+H included. Those are all incredibly under rated. Especially the Poly 800. People dislike that you can't play the filter with a knob on the 800, but you can play it with a button. It also has a 6 parameter envelope which can make weird sounds. Your korg poly six is very interesting to me. That would be a real keeper in my studio. I like the old stuff and still have my first synth I got as a teen around 1980 the Korg 770. It's funny seeing almost everyone has to have a moog. I have actually never liked the moog sound because it was/is so trendy and I can build a whole studio for the price of one moog. Your Rhodes and Wurlitzers are also very interesting. Some other odd balls I have not purchased, but come close to buying are the Technics synths. Those are a bit thin sounding, but they could be interesting in a mix or layered to double a patch. You may want to check those out. I am curious how many of these synths you use when composing. I have a small set up, 2 electribes, the poly 800, the micron, and a EPS 16 Plus. I've actually put 3 keyboards into storage as I don't really need them at all right now. Also, I am on the learning curve having to remember how to use the old EPS and the Micron right now. They are not second nature yet. I hate learning interfaces because it gets in the way of making music. I hit ye olde Sub button. I have a channel called David Megarry's Dungeon, if you could be so kind and return the favor. - Griff

@tdtrecordsmusic
@tdtrecordsmusic 2 года назад
lotta possibilities... my first hunch is leaky caps. OR an easy/lucky find is just moving any wires or electrical stuff away from the transformer or power supply traces/wires. transformers and diodes emanate noise. if the caps don't filter it out it can get through into an amplifier chips/transistors. OR a big OR is double checking that everything is grounded properly. check whether or not the noise is coming from inside the keyboard OR if it is coming from your house, like an old fridge / a/c unit / random stuff plugged in. too many things could be the culprit. U gotta locate the source first. then figure out the options.

Akai X7000 is a gem - if in good condition. Do I use it daily? No. But if not the 12-bit sampling does the sound, then the 6-pole analog filters! I've sampled octave-doubled strings from Yamaha TG33 and it does really wonders to the sound. The SK-1 reminded me that I did the same on X7000 with my voice and it sounds similar, it has electric organ feel to it. Add some distortion pedal to fx loop, delays and it's a fantastic instrument! The key point is to use lower sampling rate than you would normally use. The filter kills all digital grit and turns it into cool warm darkness.

I skimmed the video to the items that I have and will watch the rest for work ;) . I got a Rhodes mkii eighty-eight suitcase with legs and minus the amp, the lid is in need of new tolex, and the keyboard had a restoration. I think I paid $720 or $780 CAD. Owner said it originally came from a radio station in Chicago I bought two AX60s in good working order. One was $725 and the other $500 CAD. I bought an MG1 in working order, with the typical 1/4" mod and filter in, no foam for $800 CAD. I bought a polysix from a friend since he was trying to sell it. He's good with synth repair so I knew it would be in great shape. It just needed a new LED piece for one switch. I paid $1100 CAD and he threw in a Baldwin Discoverer for free. I bought one SK-1 for $40 CAD and another for $80 CAD (I had been looking for one for ages, so a little desperate). Don't pay the insane prices people try to sell these for! It's cool only for the crappy lo-fi sampler. $80 was pushing it and people try to get hundreds for these... Honourable mention, I bought an akai s612 with the disk drive and I think 35 or 45 quickdisks for $100 CAD. Best purchase ever and the guy was a legit synth guy from the 80s/90s with an incredible collection. I think he saw it as a super outdated and limited sampler which it totally is haha! I think they serve *slightly* different roles. A lot of the public perception of the JX8p (i think) comes from the presets being really classic 80s stuff, and the almost glossy chorus sound. If you need to have *that thing* then the jx08 will deliver. But I really think deepmind can get close with some careful patching. One more note on the Juno 106 - you can get the System-8 with the Juno 106 plug-out and the sound (to my ears) is 99% there. I had two vintage 106's that I was able to sell and I'm happy with the System-8/106 Plug-out alternative.

Have a Korg Wavestation EX so the Wavestate or ModWave do not seem greatly needed, not sure about OpSix. Also have a Deepmind 12 which I absolutely love for the price, and I looked, rather wanted, the UFX 1604 with the 16 track out to a external drive, along with all its features. But never owned a Moog, love deep dark bass & much of what I have seen even in a Sub37 and think Subsequent has the CV in's, updated from the Sub37 Tribute, and much more, also have a Sweetwater card so Zero financing on that $1399 offer for (B-Stock) any comments. Deal or No Deal? TY

Regarding that Juno jack that you need to keep it halfways out... you might just need to resolder the jack to the PCB.
