Every Test You Wanted to Know: RODE Wireless Go II

RØDE has done it again with their super popular Rode Wireless GO series. This time the Rode Wireless Go II packs an incredible punch that essentially makes it relevant for years to come. While the sound is slightly different, the two stand out features you need to know about is its clean internal recording capabilities, so that you never lose a piece of audio ever again on a shoot, and the firmware updates that could potentially increase functionality and features. With these two features alone, RØDE has affectively bulldozed the market by pulling no punches; and with only a modest $100 price difference from its younger brother. Sit back, relax, and check out all the tests to see if the new RODE Wireless go 2 will fit your production needs!

Thanks for checking out the Wireless GO II! As an FYI, you can export just a selection of the onboard recording with the most recent version of RØDE Central. Just drag the white bars from either end of the track to get the selection you need, and then press export selection!

Hey hey RØDE! Thank you guys for supplying me with the review units for this review! Wonderful to hear about the most recent version of the RØDE Central App. I'm not sure if the E-mail notifications are working as I am not receiving the emails about a new version. I'm sure the team is working on it, but hopefully the App can just auto update instead of needing to download each new version manually. I look forward to seeing any new future updates with the TX and RX firmware. You all have completely changed the game with these small form wireless audio systems, can't wait to deploy them more on film projects!

MrHennnnnng. I knoooooooow we did! But the more I thought about it, this is assuming your laptop or phone is the timecode that your camera, recorder, and RODE GO has to sync up with somehow. Hi, and thanks for your info. Finally someone who checks how far from the receiver the transmitter works with the "back" towards the receiver. Most tests I have seen here on youtube, have gone backwards when testing the "range" of the products. It will probably be a Rode, since unfortunately several of the cheaper brands are unfortunately not yet "there", regardless of range or noise floor. Thank you for the work you put in.

First off, I love the format. Answers first, explanations later. Alos very impressed at how exhaustive your testing was since it answered a lot of questions I had. At the end of this you had convinced me not to put off buying a set when my tax return comes. There is however one tiny question mark sticking around that did not get answered in this: When using this with an external recorder using the supplied 3.5 to 3.5 TRS cable the lack of shielding in the recorder often results in a severe whine, this is solved by a stereo to double mono splitter and two xlr adapters (all from rode in the video I saw), the question left however is if it would work with an existing stereo TRS to dual XLR-cable. Maybe not your wheelhouse but that was the only question I didn't get an answer to. Thanks for a great and easily digested video. oh and of course I subscribed.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey djeeno! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I think this all ultimately comes down to your recorder if the shielding in the recorder is the problem. I personally have not run into any RF problems with any cable, splitter, and Dual XLR stereo cables going into my Tascam DR40 (used in this videos tests) And these cables are all either the companies own brand or a very cheap off-brand from Amazon. I've heard the earlier Zoom recorders had the RF problem with these 2.4ghz wireless audio systems, Id imagine their newer ones don't. Thanks again for stopping by! Hey hey again Steven! Absolutely, it's going to be very hard for any budget 2.4ghz systems to compete with them now because I feel most of them just won't have the internal recording and if they did it will be limited and even then it probably won't be as full featured with firmware upgrades. RØDE has stomped their foot down and now we look to Zoom and others to see if they are going to attempt to bring a fight at this price level. We shall see!

Hey hey again Chris! Glad you saw the more recent video on the new RODE, there is also one about what different Lav mics sounds with it. When it comes to home recording stuff it really depends on what you're doing. I used to want to use wireless mics, but now all my youtube videos in the home office is done with my RODE Videomic NTG as it's less hassle to setup and does a good job blocking out noise from the outdoors.

Fantastic review and testing of this kit, it really helped me in the decision to purchase it. I'm a freelance sound recordist and boom operator, and I bought the RODE Wireless Go II kit for a specific need. Recording atmos/soundscape on set can be difficult, especially if you need anywhere from a minute to a few minutes of silence to capture it. But you can't get around it; the soundscape on set is unique to that location, time and weather. For example, if an airplane is passing overhead, the Doppler effect created is almost impossible to recreate in post. Therefore I bought this kit to be my always-present atmos capture. I can pop these on a small stand in A/B somewhere discrete, and during the take when the set is generally silent I get the exact atmos for that take. It makes post happy, it makes the director happy as he/she can hear a nice mix during the take, and it means I've got an extra pair of lavs if things turn for the worst. This is the cheapest and most convenient all-in-one system money can buy for this purpose. As a professional, if I was to purchase these for use on talent, I would love locking TRS sockets. The thought of the lav accidentally unplugging mid-take is terrifying and is what mainly puts me off using them for their intended purpose, but I know they're not designed for people with my requirements.

I'm so happy to hear this video was helpful and that you were able to make a informed purchasing decision for your needs! I did a fun video about what we could expect if RODE made a "pro" version of the RODE GO. Hi! First of all I want to compliment you! In my opinion you are a TOP RU-vidr! Few cuts, excellent hand movements, impeccable framing and perfect lights! VERY VERY GOOD!!! And now my problem... THE SAFETY CHANNEL! Let me start by saying that I have the WirelessGO II for few days... I'd like confirmation on what I've noticed that is, when I record the audio using the minijack (for example if I record on my Zoom) the safety channel works correctly WHILE When I record a video on my iPhone 12 Pro Max, using the Rode SC15 cable, THE AUDIO HAS NO SAFETY CHANNEL!!! This, in my opinion, is a serious programming error!!! Do you agree with that???
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 года назад
Hey hey Tex! Thank you so much for checking out this video, the much kind words, and asking a question! This is completely normal for the iphone in that if you are using the built in video app, it records a dual mono signal from any microphone you plug into it. Which mean, you will never hear the safety channel because it is premixed into both L and R channels. I can't confirm if this is true if you used the app "filmic pro" where it does seem to show two stereo channels in your audio meters. You may need to google search to see if FilmicPro allows for true stereo recording instead of the Apple Iphone Video App that does dual mono by default. All's to say is, what you're experience on the iphone right now is normal, some action cameras also just have one channel of audio that then gets dual mono'd out. Hope this helps! You spoke pretty positively about Comica’s BoomX D dual wireless system a year-ish ago. Because of you and our conversations I purchased it. It has been good and enjoyed it. So thank you very much. I’ve even used an adapter to usb-c on the Comica mics and it has done well with a laptop over zoom. However, just like rode did to answer deity’s v-mic d3 by coming out with the NTG they seem to have done so plus some (app, firmware, different hertz, internal audio, safety track, etc) with the new wireless 2. Going back down to basics of audio... what do you think of the sound difference between the two mic systems, and their wireless reliability? Your statements in this video are pretty clear. Of all the pro budget lines the wireless 2 really takes the cake. However I’m still curious since you did say positive things about what Comica did a year ago yet did not include them (and yeah there have been so many iterations since rode’s 1st one came out). Is the comica boomx dual wireless on par sound wise, and does it matter given all the other added features this new wireless 2 gives you?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey again Jarrad! The reason I did not include the Comica XD is because they were beat out by the Saramonic Blink 500 Pro approx 4 months ago in the 2.4ghz dual TX space. As far as sound, there is indeed a difference between the two, mainly that the BoomXD has a default Low Cut Filter on by default that can't be turned off. However if you have a low bassy voice, this works in your favor versus my voice that benefits from the RODE GO II lift in the bass sound. My thoughts on the Comica Boom XD at the time, of course, is based on no one else coming into the market with those set of features. So at the time it was the best competitor against the RODE GO at that price point and value. Especially with a little EQ the Boom XD could match the sound. I would say this, if the Boom XD is currently serving your needs and you have not had any limitations because of it. Then theres really no reason to rush out and upgrade. Because you'd be upgrading for no real reason. The "Think Critically" video I talked about in this video and linked is where my thought processes is coming from. Don't buy things on the "off chance" you may need it, because you'd be wasting more money just to feel safe. Instead buy what you know you need or upgrade to solve a problem. Hope this makes sense and helps!

Hey hey cloudy05! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Oh definitely not a good idea to fiddle with EQ out in the field, definitely more for studio work unless a certain outdoor space is used for multiple shoots and the sound person can create an EQ after the first day shoot. Looks like the original version got 3x the "no line of sight" distance in the new location. Great that you added this as a comparison point. Overall, I can't think of anything you didn't test, other than maybe frequency response compared to a direct cable, but then again, no one tests that. Your sound comparison is plenty sufficient there. I think this is finally a 2.4Ghz system I can feel good purchasing.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey again Alan! They key point about the original in the test is that I oriented the RX to be vertical and not horizontal like it would naturally. When you have it in this configuration the RX is able to grab a better signal. It's really only good if you are a 1ch user. I really really want to figure out how to do a frequency response comparison it would be much most objective than to use my voice which is more mid heavy and grumbly. But other than that, yea, RODE came to play hard after watching the competition for 2 years. They came in with no punches pulled!
@alantuttphotography
@alantuttphotography 3 года назад
@@TLDR_filmmaker That's right, you did mention that you altered the orientation. And yes, this probably accounts for a good portion of the increased range. As far as doing a frequency test, you might have to connect the output of your computer to the mic-in jack of the transmitter, then do a frequency sweep in a DAW. The volume recorded out of the receiver throughout the sweep would give a good picture of the frequency response of the system. Even better if you could record the DAW output on the same recorder as the received signal, then you have a clear reference of the original source. Again, you really don't need to do this type of test, but it would be another detail unique to your channel.

Can you change input level when the Rode is connected as a usb device? I noticed that the input level is a little low for me when I connect to zoom, ecamm, screenflow or any other program on a Mac. Usually you can change input levels in sound settings for usb mics, but I can't seem to do this myself. It says "no input controls" for you at 7:09 as well when you're connected. Thanks for the review. I've going to be recording some noisy race cars and wonder if this unit is up to the task. Don't want these loud race cars to clip the audio constantly...so have a back safety channel sounds interesting.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 года назад
Hey hey Checkered Flag Films! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The new firmware updates for the RODE GO II added a "pad" feature for the TX for exactly that purpose of super loud sounds. The PAD is done at the mic-input level, not the RX output level, I can't remember if that pad is -15db or -20db. The safety channel is done at the output level of the RX and not at the mic level, so that PAD feature is what you'll want to use. Otherwise if the mic clips, the safety channel on the RX isn't going to help. TLDR: Us the TX PAD feature, you can still use the safety channel with it too just incase your cameras preamp setting was too hot for certain shots. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hey hey cheesyfries! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Yes, this can be done with the latest firmware for the TX. I have a question, can you clarify, at around 10:30 you talk about "Merged Mode" and "Safety Channel". When using these two how does transmitters recordings are effected? If I clipped while in the merged mode and the safety channel is activated, what do transmitters record and where do I get the clipped track and the "safe" track?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey Aydın! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The transmitters recordings are not affected as the safety channel is on the receiver end. If you clip while in merged mode with the safety track activated. Your camera has 2ch stereo. Your left channel will be clipped, but your right one will be recording at a lower dB value so you can recover the "clipped" audio on the camera side. If you have internal recording activated at the same time, you have another safety track per TX (so to speak) assuming the sound wasn't so loud that it clipped the internal recording, you have another track to pull from if you so choose. Hope this makes sense. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

What would be better for capture quality: recording directly to the RW GO II or connecting it to the Zoom H4n Pro? In my case, I work with journalism and independent cinema (short and medium film). For movies, I need a lavalier. So, I would have to buy the RW GO II kit + 2 lavaliers (RODE Lavalier Go Mic, for example).

Hey hey Rafael! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Generally speaking to get the best quality you will want to record into an external recorder like your Zoom. However the internal back up recording in the RODE GO isn't too bad if you need it in a pinch. The RODE GO II would be a great piece of kit to have with you for indie films and journalism, that backup recording feature has come in handy for me in random situations where I just use it as a voice recorder with no video. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Good job, this is like Gerald undone levels of stress test! Only thing i wish you could've examined was the issue ive been hearing about people saying that if it looses connection with the receiver the internal recording wont work and actually wont record, i seen rode adrressing this in one persons review showing it was a flaw in this, but either way im glad i subscribed

Thanks again for the kind words YoungBlaze. Yes I had that problem too on an older firmware and saw RODE addressed it so I didn't feel the need to bring it up as I am on the latest firmware. Most likely people won't have this issue when they receiver their units as the moment they plug into the computer with the app, it will update. I look forward to seeing what other firmware updates may come!

Very great and usefull review test! I miss 1 thing: how is the signaal interference if the set is used in a crowd, having all mobile phones active in 2.4 GHz? A friend of mine, who is a professional filmmaker, says "this possibly won't work in crowded venues with lots of people having phones and wifi networks in the air". (external radio interference).

Hey hey Thundercatsie! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! The test you're looking for is my Wifi Simulation Test were you took a bunch of other wireless microphone transmitters and placed it near the RODE GO II to simulate just how much will break the system. Generally speaking it looks like the RODE GO II can handle a lot in that it needs the wifi signal to be right next within 4 inches to get it mess with it own signals. When you're in a large open space with wifi around but neither of them are near the TX or RX, you should be fine. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

I have to say this is the BEST Review and Testing I've seen for a long time. Pretty good work. Thank you for that! I just want to know is it possible to plug in a usb mic into the Rode go with an adapter? Like the Yeti i saw in this video in the background? Or a similar USB mic like this a Samson Meteor.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey Mark! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! So glad you got value from this video! As for a USB mic plugged into the TX. My guess is, "no", as there most likely isn't a protocol in the TX to look for a mic via the USB. However that's not to say it can't be done because the data channels are open for you to export internal recordings. This could potentially be firmware upgrade, but probably only once RODE creates their own USB-C lav mic or mic series. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@TLDR_filmmaker You’re welcome. It has to be said because it true! Extremely good in review! I see you got a Jeti (ubs mic?) mic in the back perhaps you could find some time and give it a try when you own a usb c to usb a adapter. :) My doubt is that the power consumption from the usb mic is too high and the rode Transmitter can’t deliver the power that is needed to record. Otherwise connection wise is should work. Hopefully I hear from you soon 🙃 Thumbs up and subscription is done :)

@@MarkMonetti Ohhh the "yeti". I was confused what you were talking about haha. That being said I think it may be down to how much power the USB-C on the RODE can give. My guess is probably not enough to power a Yeti that needs the standard 5v 2a.

I absolutely love that you tested two wireless go II systems together (for four transmitters.) That’s the exact case use I’m looking to duplicate. My question is: Have you tested running these through a live PA system? For example a small conference with four panelist? I want to send all four voices to the house speakers, and simply run an output from the board to the camera for video or livestream audio. In your experience would this work?
@TLDR_filmmaker

Hey hey Matthew! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! While I have not specifically done this setup, I don't see why it wouldn't work. The only thing you need to be considerate of is that run a longer cable from the two RX into the sound board (Stereo Splitter of course) so that you can move the RX's away from each instead of keeping it near each other at the board. That should lower any chances of the two RX interfering with each others signal. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Also, Pro mode would be very welcome, although, I don't know of any pro wireless brands that don't use some kind of compression, etc. in the signal chain.

Thank you for the extremely comprehensive review, super helpful! Much appreciated! Just a quick question in terms of RF interference~ are there any interference when connecting the wireless go ii to a "rode videomicro" & "rode videomic pro" ? Thanks again!

Hey hey Chih-Wei Chang! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! While I don't have those mics specifically. I seem to recall when the very first RODE Wireless GO came out that those microphones picked up RF interference when plugged in. The only way to minimize it was to use a 6feet extension cable to move the transmitter further away. I believe those mics were not designed to be plugged into a wireless transmitter, where as the new RODE Videomic GO II and Videomic NTG I reviewed can handle it. If you haven't already definitely check out my review on the Videomic GO II, its a great inbetween the Micro and Videomic NTG. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NmQ2ED_TO9I.html Hope this helps! 1:52 Blink 500 Pro sounded the best Even Rode GO sounded better than GO 2 for some reason!

Hey hey Muhammad! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! While that is true in terms of the soundbox text, you'll need to consider that most people arn't going to be talking in a completely sound chamber type room. The Original RODE GO was a flat response, which meant your voice sounded much more thin when you were using it in normal situations and may need to bump up the Bass to get your voice back. The New RODE GO and Blink500 add that bass back in so when you are in a room or outdoors, your voice sounds better out of the gate without needed to EQ later. The beginning parts of me using the build in mic and deity you can hear how in that room my voice sounds fine and doesn't sound like the soundbox. Hope this makes sense! Thanks again for stopping by! Through NS10s & Rokit 5s, GO was loads better, hi-end sounds overly flat on the 2.

Hey hey Pramod! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! You need to tell the RX to go into "merged" mode. You do this by clicking the two bottom buttons (Not the one that looks like "Ø" )at the same time and I think hold it. You will see a thin sound bar turn into one thicker one.
