Hey there everyone.
Watch in 4K for best results.
In todays video I will be running all top 10 Playstation 1 games on the Duckstation Emulator and running all smooothing and upscaling options along with "force 16:9 widescreen" to make games run at native 16:9. All with incredible results.
If you havent subbed already then please consider it as I will be making more videos like this as per viewer request.
Let me know in the comments if you want to see Gamecube or PSP next.
Both of those systems have great upscaling options and I would love to cover them.

Some great PS1 games were also released on Dreamcast (Resident Evil 2, Dino Crisis 1, Soul Reaver etc) they generally have better character models and the Dreamcast naively put out 480p/576p, so that's a good way to play some with a nicer picture.

Just tried getting Spyro 2 to run in 1080p on my desktop without a graphics card. DuckStation runs smoother upscaled than my previous emulator did period. Also has the fewest glitches out of any PS1 emulator I've ever used. Genuinely impressive

Yeah mate. This emulator is in my opinion the simplest and best PS1 emulator so far. Simply stunning how well the games run with very few issues. Thanks for the comment buddy. I hope to make more emulator related stuff in the near future.

wrong. on pc you could hack and swap the texture data and upscale to 4k and beyond. Enough with praising the dreamcast. It was good when it came out. Now it's just disgusting to keep praising dc the way you did.

Good list here but if were talking visual feats that pushed the PSOne to its technical limits than Chrono Cross, Omega Boost and Wipe3out would certainly be worthy mentions for use with this emu as the upscaling makes them look like early PS2 titles!

First few comments really hit home in our current generation. Back in the day, you could buy a game, and feel great that you bought a complete experience and weren't missing out on anything. And because there was no online connection, devs had a powerful motivation to get their code right for release. My gf at the time bought me my first PS1 for Christmas in 95. I was 21. Favorite times in gaming.

Yeah mate the golden age of gaming for me was up to around the early PS3 era. From there, most games have become microtransaction, split into DLC, release now and fix later, live service monstrosities. Still some great games coming out modern day but like you said, when you bought a game back then it was the total package.

Duckstation is really incredible! Comparing w what we had of best till today (EPSXE), it's amazing how well it manages to run the games while the old emulator made so much effort even though it had what we thought was the top of the line in the emulators. The only thing even the Duckstation still can do well is to upscale well the fonts. I dont knew that was so difficult to upscale "simple" images in 2D. When I saw parrapa the rapper I remembered this because the characters appears to be a 2D image, and they have been upscaled perfectly. Why cant they do the same with the fonts? :(

Yeah I have had tons of problems with EPSXE. It really isnt user friendly and I had regular issues with window sizing when upscaling. I am a big fan of the PS1 and emulation in general so when I tested this emulator and witnessed how good it is I just had to make a video. About the 2D upscaling. The only thing that can be done would be to smooth it. Every emulator I have used for any console has not been able to upscale the menus or other 2D assets. With Parappa the Rapper even though the charachters are "2D" they still exist in 3d space so can be uspcaled. What games have you been playing on this? I have hosted a few smackdown games over the internet with friends and that is a good laugh.

EPSXE used to be a marvel, but for some reason, it just doesn't work well with newer hardware and modern OS. DuckStation was a revelation to me and I don't even use any of the enhancements!

@@maldivirdragonwitch I think on android that’s different although I’ve heard people still complain it runs better than duckstation on a google pixel Xl 2016 but that has a snapdragon 821 but the lower ram than newer pixels and I guess being older doesn’t help it fully perform well on duckstation while epsxe has been mostly flawless with barely ever a dip duck always dips on that phone

@@maldivirdragonwitchI'm gonna guess it suffers from the multicore issue. Back then, we had 1 or 2 fast cores, now we have at least 8 slower cores doing the work, but the emulator is only designed to use 1 core. Imagine 1 core at 400mhz vs 1 core at 2500mhz.

The 3D upscaling looks even better if you use the included Xbrz filter. Just don't use that filter with 2D games.

I've installed Duckstation on my Xbox series X through developer mode, it works a treat. Apart from the fact that I'm playing PlayStation games with an Xbox controller... 🤣🤣 I reckon I could get hung in some parts for such an offence. All jokes aside, brilliant video mate the Duckstation emulator is absolutely superb and another thing about it that's good is the support, it's constantly updated!

Actually, it's not upscaling the Resolution in Dusckstation it's re-rendered Native Resolution unlike RPCS3 the PS3 Emulator it's Upscale from 1280x720 to higher Resolution, Upscale always Looks blurry Unlike Native Look sharp and clean

A lot of people think the graphics looked 'bad' in the 80 / 90's. But TV's back then had a resolution of 480p or 576p. So i'd assume games looked sharper. Now we are taking that 480p image and stretching it to at least 1080p so looks worse than it was.

It didn't work on Worms because using an emulator to set the resolution higher than it was originally in the game is not upscaling. This just takes the jagged edges from polygons but low res textures and sprites stay low res - for that you'd need actual upscaling.

@@wondersgtagaming so it's a CRT (tube tv) but it was used for broadcasting purposes. Just like the similar PVMs they have much more lines so they could show more detail in the picture. Gaming on consoles like ps2, og xbox & Gamecube and older are always great on Tube TVs cause the poor pixels aren't all stretched out. People in the US got a bad deal cause their tvs didn't have scart which made for me uuuuuh better quality (look up scart vs composite to see what I mean). But even then the PVMs and BVMs are next level. It made not really care about hd remasters that much after using one. Problem they are MAD expensive.

I used to use a composite lead on my PS1 way back in the day until I got a TV with a scart port and it made a big difference to the quality. Bear in mind though that you can play games in original resolution and also add different varieties of scanlines if you were to try that for the effect.

I still use all emulators independant of Retroarch buddy so I couldnt say. I have always found Retroarch to not be very user friendly but I know a lot of people love it.

Whenever I have tried Epsxe upscaling before I have had issues. It also seems to change my desktop resolution up and muddle all of my desktop icons. Duckstation is much more user friendly. Highly recommended.

CV: SotN definitely doesn't look that blurry in original res, must be something off with the emulator settings. The only thing that would be affected is 3D textures

it's not upscaling to 4K, it's called rendering at 4K resolution. upscaling doesn't add any extra pixels, it just scales the image to fit 4K display. rendering at 4K means adding extra pixels for more details and clarity and edge smoothing

Hiya mate. The PC specs are CPU I9-9900k, 32gb or DDR4 RAM, GTX1070 Founders (8gb GDDR5). All running on M2 SSD's but this can be done on much lower hardware.

Hello there buddy. This emulator as with many others improves the internal resolution so it can upscale beyond 8k if you have a screen or moniter that will support it. Also I very much agree that some of the results especially on purely polygon based games is fantastic.

In the case of Resident Evil 2 and 3 is better to play the Seamless HD mod, is based on Dolphin emulator but this re made and upscale pre rendered background too and they look beautiful.

Purists will always say that but it doesn't matter. First you will avoid burn your monitor, second after some time you will get use to it and the game is as funny as if you play in original aspect ratio. The only games that you should play in original aspect ratio are vertical games and with special aspects ratios like nintendo DS games.

I played the entire Silent Hill on duckstation upscaled and It was fantastic... Sadly on certain cutscenes the upscaling have some issue and the game crash. Also Rip duckstation, I ear that the dev just abandoned the project for pc

Oooh. The PS1 Spiderman games are real classics. Syphon Filter was a real good game but I remember it being tough. Now Spyro was my game back in the day. 1 and 2 especially. Do you know how to set the emulator up with these games? You do not need a monster pc for them to run perfectly.

Hello there. Just go into the settings tab and choose display settings. You can change the resolution in there buddy.

its hard to remember that this isnt ps2 games upscaled its ps1 so imagine what these upscaled ps1 games would look like on ps2 upscaled or if that is the quality of upscaled ps1 then imagine the quality of ps2 upscale. i would arguably say 90% of these games shown look better to ps2 normal games

A minor complaint, but what emulators do isn't "upscaling", but instead rendering to a higher resolution.

upscaling works only on the 3d polygon models, any 2d sprites pre rendered on screen will not be effected by the upscaling

that's because what he's doing isn't upscaling. he's just using a higher resolution than the ps1 did, pretty much every emulator can do that. actual upscaling on the other hand would do just that: upscale pixelated sprites and textures to higher resolutions.

its not upscaling if you actually render the game at the the higher resolution as you do with emulators the pixels are actually all really there, saying upscaling is misleading cause it's so much better than just an upscale you know compared to like a Blu Ray player that upscales a DVD this aint that

Hiya mate. The resolution scale is increased on the internal resolution. I know there are multiple types of upscaling but there is only so much that I can fit in the title lol.

In my opinion original graphics looks better than upscale and I think that upscale can't show how these games looked on original console connected to crt tv. I reccomend use duckstation emulator with widescreen hacks and different post processing filters# like blur, crt and etc.

I never played that game mate although I have heard of it before. At very least with this emulator you can sharpen and upscale to 4k. Makes a lot of games look very nice.

iin duckstation go to to enhacements settings , and activate pgxp for not deformations ,,,, and in enhacements settings use bilineal filter for delete ridiculous pixels in screen:( 😉👌🌟and in video settings use lineal upscaler for not pixels in videos intros,

Original resolution ps1 is special I kind of prefer it. But forced 16:9 is just bad, I thought if you use the duckstation patch it can make 16:9 without stretching in most games?

Hiya mate. Draw distance is how far the game will load graphics. It is not a problem in most modern games but for older consoles like the PS1, they would only load what is very close to the player to save on performance. This is very apparent in lots of older games. Notice in your timestamp for the Driver clip how the buildings are all "popping" in as I approach.

I prefer some games on other consoles like resident evil games i prefer to play on dreamcast and metal gear is better on gamecube (twin snakes) and thps2 i also prefer on the dreamcast they look better in original resolution but when upscaled they look insane on flycast and dolphin 👍 or if you had original console and want to upscale on a regular tv use a carby for the gamecube and a mclassic paired with a retrotink 2x mini for n64,dreamcast and ps1 og consoles i would recommend the 5x but i see better results for retro consoles (ps1,n64,dreamcast) with that combo instead.

The games are not upscaled, they are rendered in a higher resolution. And please, do not stretch these 4:3 games to 16:9 aspect ratio, it looks awful. There are many real widescreen hacks for old psx games, not all of them do render flawless, but many. Thanks.

ya dunno what you're on about. can literally take the worst encoded video on youtube and when played on crt it looks good. Even dragged this video onto tv at 240p mode and original looks amazing. all that dithering blends in. depth to it kinda like optical illusion. and then see that junky castlevania and thats exactly why generation z has this warped view on why every game these days needs to be "pixel art" because they think everything looks like minecraft, and it doesn't. dithering on crt alot smoother and looks like a dvd instead of tacking on all those shaders. dont stop at 4k go all the way to 8k see if that warps your view more.

I have a good idea what I am on about lol. I am comparing the graphics on modern hardware and screens to how badly some of these games have aged. A subjective opinion of course. Not sure what to say about Gen Z but I do not fall into that category so I do not really know how to answer that one. If I had an 8k screen I would love to see how this all looks to be honest.

Yeah I spent so much time playing Smackdown 1 and 2 as a kid. Still very playable to this day. While recording the video I got side tracked and put a good few hours in before realising I had to geton with the other games lol. I couldnt not mention it as one of my favourite PS1 games.

The widescreen is forced (not stretched) and used to illustrate the feature. The image is not stretched but the borders are artificially widened. This works very well on some games and is broken on others.

*"Worms Amageddon - the problem is that it's aged terribly"* No the problem is you're emulating the PS1 version on a PC, rather than playing the PC version that can be played at 4K native. Duckstation looks amazing, but I'd only use it for games that were only ever released on PS1, or N64. Cool to see how Worms runs on duckstation, but if you're actually going to play it, just play it on PC.

Hiya mate. Yeah I do actually still play Worms Armaggedon and WWP on PC. I was just measuring up the PS1 graphics according to the top 10 list.
