I took the kayak out during a fall transition day to discover the lake had flipped over and there was a major algae bloom impacting the clarity of the water. The shallow shorelines almost looked like an oil-based paint which turned anything that touched it green (my kayak included).
As I pedaled offshore, the water clarity improved, so that is where I felt the greatest confidence in catching fish. It wasn't long before I started to mark some schooling Crappie on my fish finder. That is when I decided to bust out a product which every kayak angler should own... A MARKER BUOY!
Marker Buoys are super simple products - essentially just a float with a weight and a string attached. It wouldn't be hard to make your own because of that. However, I happen to have a two pack of Eagle Claw Marker Buoys and they get the job done nicely for a low price. Available here: discounttackle.com/products/e...
These buoys are extremely helpful for all boat anglers as they allow you to create vantage points offshore. This can help you hold a location or a breakline effectively. For kayak anglers, they are even more important due to the nature of smaller watercraft being impacted by wind/current heavily.
Overall, I never caught any big fish that day, but it was a great time on the water and I always enjoy a good offshore Crappie bite. No complaints!
