Still rockin' my 13" Mid 2012 with i7, upgraded to a 512GB Samsung SSD and 16GB RAM shortly after purchase (that was expensive back in 2012). Has been in various EnCase hardshell cases and Moshi keyboard protectors, looks like new old stock. Here we are in 2021 and it still runs just fine, and the battery still holds a charge for several hours (a far cry from the 20hrs the new M1 machines are getting, but 5hrs of battery life from a machine that's almost a decade old (I'm on my fourth cell phone since buying it) and has been the daily driver for most of that time is pretty darn good). I'm expecting similar longevity from my next machine: the redesigned 14" MBP with "M1X" silicon with maxed-out RAM/GPUs and 512GB storage (portable storage is relatively cheap, especially compared to Apple storage).

So much nostalgia seeing these old unibody Pros. Just seeing them brings me back to the good old days. I got my very first MacBook Pro in the fall of 2010 (prior to that I had the old school 2008 white polycarbonate MacBook). I absolutely loved that laptop. It came with Snow Leopard. I mainly bought it for photo editing since I was just getting seriously into photography, which it was amazing for. I actually still have it in storage in our basement, but the screen has some issues. I then bought another MacBook Pro in early 2013. Sadly, that one suffered a very tragic death in late 2015/early 2016 at the hands of a cat and a hot cup of coffee. I replaced it with a 2016 MacBook Air. While the Air has served me well for the past 6 years and it still works great, I was ready to get another Pro, so today I took a trip to Best Buy and got my brand new M1 MacBook Pro and I can't get over how thin and lightweight it is compared to my old unibody MacBook Pros. It's almost as lightweight as my MacBook Air, which is amazing. Part of me wants to go on eBay and see if I can find on old unibody to buy just for fun.

So slow with the HDD and 4GB RAM until I found your channel and discovered how easy it is to upgrade (plus enjoy your other content). I spent $100 on 8GB and a SSD, and am pleasantly surprised at its speed compared to my Acer Spin 5 (8th gen i5/8GB RAM/240GB SSD). Sure, the display is very average compared to what I'm used to, but I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know MacOS and reckon I'll be scouting eBay soon for a Mid 2015.

HI, Luke! Thanks for the video! I am currently watching this video on my mid-2010 MBP that was a hand-me-up from my younger sister when I decided to go back to school for a CS degree 4 years ago. Initially it came with 4GB of RAM and a slow HDD, but I've since upgrade to a 500MB SSD with 16GB of RAM (I think this was the only 2010 unibody model that could support 16GB) and am running High Sierra with a new battery. At first my mac had a hard time multitasking more than two programs (Chrome, Word, PowerPoint, IDE's), but with the upgrades and an external monitor it has been my workhorse through my academic career and I couldn't be more proud of it and the fact that it has been so useful at more that 10 years old. It is in excellent condition overall and the only thing left that needs to be done is new thermal paste. I truly believe that these unibodies are some of the best products that apple has ever produced and love the fact that there are enthusiast out there dedicated to their preservation and restoration. Love the videos and keep up the great work!

I had a mid 2009 17” up until this year. It was a beast! 8gb ram and 256 gb SSD. And yes the screen resolution was amazing, such a work horse for graphic design. I started phasing it out though last year because the hinge went bad and screen just flips over backwards if it’s not 90 degrees, and the battery started failing on me. Didn’t want to put anymore money into fixes. Plus none of the creative cloud apps really work on it now. I inherited a mid 2012 15” this year and maxed it out as well and it runs like a dream. So for just a few hundred bucks I have a brand new machine that will last me a year or two until the ARM machines come out. Gotta love apple.

Still rocking my mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro. Just recently upgraded the RAM to 8GB, 500GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD, and bought a new Ifixit battery. Only hard part about the process was cloning the old HDD to the new SSD. Didn't want to use a 3rd party program to do so, but couldn't do so natively, so I used Carbon Copy Clone instead. Hey Luke love your videos. A new kind of video to maybe extend your (staple) love for the older dated macbook is Dj & production software. Like Native instrument”s Traktor, Ableton (the gold stand for music production) , apple’s own Logic Pro. Huge market of Music products and Djs that absolutely hate the new MacBooks. And many have flipped back to pc where Mac was the standards. I think a huge after market exists for this audience and these software uses. Where many brand new cheaper computers probably can’t operate Ableton or Traktor. Also Serato is also well know and used. Just something to think about running 4 audio players without lag and usb external audio.

The plus for me is the magnificent trackpad.....no laptop or remote keyboard has anywhere near the sensitivity of the trackpad. Also the backlit keyboard and the keyboard itself is brilliant. I bought a 2012 13" which already had 16Gb RAM (1600). I've put a 2Tb SSD in it and I'm running Big Sur via Open Code Patcher Utility and it is brilliant. I bought a 17" model days ago before watching this video and it has the same processor as my 13" , an i5 @ 2.53Mhz, so I'm presuming it must be a 2010 model. Will I be able to swap the 16Gb of RAM from the 13" or is it limited to 8Gb RAM?

A hot tip with the 17s is that they have express card 34 slots. I picked up a Mac OS compatible USB 3.0 usb expansion card that sits flush in the body. I also have a SD card reader that also sits flush. It's a neat little feature that more people should take advantage of. Certainly makes living with a 10+ year old laptop liveable. Mine is a 2.66 17in mid 2010. I got it new to run ArcGIS 9 'back in the day' via bootcamp. I recently gave it a refresh with an SSD, 8 gb of ram (I didn't realise it couldn't take 16, it would kernel panic when I tried) and a fresh NuPower battery, in addition to blowing out 10 years worth of dust and fitting new thermal paste, its as zippy on high Sierra as it was in snow leopard. I don't do video editing on mine, but I certainly do photo editing plus using MS office and it manages well, although I've noticed its begun to struggle with full screen RU-vid videos :/ other than that it's great and I'll hang onto it forever. Certainly not compelled by how expensive the new 16in MBPs are.

Does it have to be a specific Nanotech express card to work? they're quite expensive on Ebay compared to a Windows driver express card.

My 2009 17" macbook works great for full screen videos on youtube even in 1080p, it's the 2.93Ghz model if that makes any difference, i'm running Monterey on it and it works so well, the only real issue was the seller using a fake SSD which caused it to fail when it exceeded the true 64GB storage it had, i'm currently using a Toshiba SSHD and it's running quite well with it, I will probably update it to an SSD over the next few months especially if i can get a 2TB SSD from a reputable store, i'm very wary about buying an SSD online in case it's fake.

I have a 15" 2012 MBP (upgraded to 16GB and a SSD) and love it. Still up to date and I use it on a regular basis for office work. The only downside is the weight, the thing is heavy. I usually leave it plugged in to a monitor and keyboard, not very portable. One issue I have had is trying to figure out the best way to use either a single cable dock or an adapter to use two external monitors. Recommendations?

I brought mine new. It’s a 2010 17” 2.66. I’ve put two 500gig SSD and 8gig ram. I use it for work still to this day. I run Windows 7 and solidiworks 2013 fine on it.

My pick is the late-2011 17”. After owning 4 mid-2012 15” MBPs, (one 2.6GHz & three 2.7GHz) I decided I wanted to have the largest screen possible on a MacBook, so I picked up the latest 17”, with the 2.5GHz i7 and anti-glare display. I permanently disabled the dedicated GPU, but I plan on having the graphics upgraded at some point, since there are shops that do that kind of stuff. I can’t see myself moving on from the unibody MBP anytime soon.
@jommoner
@jommoner Год назад
Disabling the onboard GPU was a good decision! I use a 15” mid-2012 and 2009 17” (Opencore legacy patcher - latest macOS still runs fine!). I also have a 17” mid-2012 MBP (GT650M 1GB, 16GB, i7, 2TB SSD + 2TB HDD). A 15” MBP mid-2012 board in a mid-2011 17”. It is *not* plug and play by any means (the ports ‘don’t reach’ so you need to make an adapter to extend them, and extend the wires for the magsafe port, and also the power switch 😳). Unibody mid-2012 (or unibody 17”) still the best MBP!
@TrevorM97
@TrevorM97 Год назад
@@jommoner Interesting, so it can be done! That’s an idea I’ve always entertained, but never tried since the ports wouldn’t reach and I want the product to retain factory fit & finish. The ultimate dream of course, would be to solder in the chips from a 2012 onto the 2011 board. Course, then I would still be missing USB 3.0, but maybe there’s a solution for that as well! Maybe someday…

You cannot interchange the logic board between the 2011 and 2012 13" without also exchanging the display assembly. There are differences in the pin config of the 30-pin screen connector that would render a 2011 screen in a 2012 logic board useless (no backlight) and viceversa. You can however exchange logic board between the 2009 and 2010.

Do one for Retina MacBook Pros from 2012 to 2015 and once Apple unveils the first ARM Macs, do one last one with 2016 to 2020(13 inch and upto 2019 15" and 16"). Also do one for MacBook Air from 2010 to 2017(non retina).
