Okay, so maybe not EVERY snack but come on, it's already 13 minutes long. Surprisingly there's actually quite a lot of vegan snacks available at Japanese convenience stores so get ready to pause and screenshot the whole video cuz I had to move through them fast!
You didn't think I was going to upload a video about vegan food and not have a disclaimer did you? Haha ha.
Yeah, I said most of it in the video but whatever, people don't listen so here we go again: It's hard to know if products are 100% vegan in Japan because sometimes the "allergens" listed are just precautionary meaning "may contain traces of" and sometimes they actually do contain it. It's because of this confusion that I've decided to just go by what is written in the ingredients. If none of the ingredients contain animal products as far as I can tell, I'll let it slide, but please let me know if something I’ve listed is incorrect :) I’ll be happy to update the description.

I became a Vegetarian eight years ago and it was a little difficult to find and prepare food for that kind of diet.. Now "Health food aisles" have sprung up everywhere.. I have never felt better.. Hanna I'm proud of you for doing what you are doing you will never regret it.. Keep it up.. Broccoli is my favorite snack food..

First time to make a comment here! Thanks for the amazing video! Although I am not vegan/vegetarian myself but as a fellow RU-vidr, I make videos dedicated to people from my culture (including videos about food because we have our own restrictions on food as well) I can relate about how things are not clear on the label most of the time so honestly, before making any food video I always contact the factory to make sure of the ingredients before publishing that on the internet. That being said, from my humble experience I figured that most factories would list the probability of having dairy, eggs,animal products..etc JUST IN CASE IF the factory make other products that include those ingredients. WHY? because here in Japan customers are VERY picky and they may sue a factory even on the slightest mistake that's no.1, and no.2 because they can't assure you that all their workers stay in the same place working from 9 to 5 . There is a possibility that the worker in the pastry section for example being called to help workers in the meat section for an hour or so. so what if by mistake a tiny bit of meat has fell in the pastry he is making? As a big company/factory most of them would prefer to be safe than sorry and would just write that dairy,eggs or animal products ..etc are being used in the same factory so there is a possibility that your food may contain them in most cases the food doesn't contain these products it's just there for safety. Once again thanks for the amazing video it was reallllllly enjoyable

I went to Japan in 2017. Conbini were a nice break from the usual Clif Bars and Kettle Chips of American 7/11s, and in many ways I prefer them (speaking as a strict vegan). My favorite conbini snack (and one of the healthiest) is dried sweet potato strips. IDK how common it is, I found it in a 7/11 in Shimokita. You can also get fruit juice with pulp at some Family Marts, and regular fruit juice almost everywhere. And I practically lived on those Macrobio bars from Morinaga! Especially as they contain beet sugar (tensai satou) as opposed to white sugar.

Hannah, thank you so much for this. Today after walking around a lot, as I am a tourist in Japan, I was coming back to the hostel and was starving, but had no strength to go someplace and wait for dinner, I also have no money, but the one thing I had was unlimited WiFi so I watched your video, got to the nearest Lawson and bought the weird but delicious side creamy salad thing, another salad and that vegan chocolate. You seem like an awesome Vegan and shouldn't feel pressured by anyone to feel otherwise. As for not being sure about whether something is vegan or not I'm sure it's the same everywhere to some extent. Here in Australia we have fairly strict labeling but we still have to contact companies to be sure of a lot of products. Luckily it's not just up to one person though, and when people do it they often make a note somewhere on the net about it. Hopefully that becomes more common in Japan as more Vegans go there and live there and then google will help search out those answers.

Which is funny since as you said, they're known for furniture and homewares. I haven't tried their curries, just their non-vegan butter chicken, and tom yum soup potato chips which are amazing.

We also have the sometimes-misleading allergen warnings here in the USA, referring to potential cross contamination rather than actual ingredients. Obviously being fluent in a language that's on the package makes it much easier, but it can still make it much harder to quickly rule things out for those of us not too fastidious to eat things processed in the same place as non-vegan foods.

Hi Hannah, Thanks for another video. I noticed this before, but I just thought I wanted to give you some information that's more accurate when you describe mochi. You might already know this, but your favourite 3-coloured dumplings aren't exactly mochi, but they're called 'dango' (だんご or 団子). Because they're three-coloured, they're named 'Sanshoku Dango' (three-coloured dango) or 'Hanami Dango', which were my favourite snacks too when I was a child. The packet of dumplings you picked at 11'15" are also dango called 'Mitarashi Dango' with sweet brown sauce on them. I know that mochi and dango are similar, because both of them are sticky, similar texture, made from rice etc., but they're made in different ways. They use different kinds of rice too (even Wikipedia (English) on dango is giving incorrect information on the flour for it, so don't quote them on that). Sorry to be a pain in the arse, but I thought you'd probably like to know about them correctly, because mochi & dango are your favourite food?
@CurrentlyHannah
@CurrentlyHannah 5 лет назад
Ahhh yeah I knew the name of them but I always just thought that dango was made from mochi? I guess they are slightly different textures? Hmmm I’d better start calling them dango then hahaha. Thanks for explaining it a little better!

Noice! It seems that i'm now watching your videos hoping to get a laugh… Intro yep, the eye roll when you started on the ingredients thing (also most youtubers have those pixie lights in the background) that time you actually flipped an inanimate object hehehe! (ohh multiple times hope they learned their lesson hehehe) The one thing i found out from my little experience with japan is that they are in a constant flux of changing the foodstuffs and even if they're popular they might still discontinue it. Mmmm looks like cat food but i'll give it a shot if i come across it. Hmmm i wonder if you might know why it's called a "rice ball" but it's shaped like a triangle/pyramid… Anyway hope the storm isn't too bad in tokyo.

Is vegan an actual "thing" in Japan? In North America there are a lot of vegan restaurants or menus just for vegans. Has this started to take in Japan as well, or is it up to you to find out what is or isn't on your own before ordering?

It is increasing. More vegan options are popping up in restaurants and supermarkets, theres even a vegan exclusive konbini in asakusa, and ofc shoujin ryouri at the temples, but no it isnt much of a thing yet in Japan.

Hi Hannah :) OK, I think 'butter-oil' = ghee aka clarified butter. Yep, the steamed red-bean paste buns are vegan, they're the same as Chinese 'pau'. Other vegan options would be black bean paste, lotus seed paste. I don't think you'll find sweet coconut ones though; I think that's more a Singapore thing... NO VEGAN BREAD?!? GASP!!!

I'm a flexitarian but I don't like to eat meat mostly, I only eat it when I really want to. And yeah, I hate seafood, I can't with the smell. so I guess it was a helpful guide for me, next year japan, I'm coming for ya.
