I find it interesting that the Horn of Africa and Southern Arabia region are some of the most conflict and poverty prone regions in the world, yet much of the world's shipping trade passes through that choke point. Billions of dollars of trade on peaceful merchant ships passing through the Red Sea while people are killing each other and dying from famine on either sides of the land. The contrast couldn't be more remarkable.

Technically, a skirmish where 10 people die is not a war. It makes zero sense for Kenya, Tanzania, Senegal and Paraguay to be classed the same as Ethiopia, Afghanistan and Yemen. The first three have never had any war since independence. Two terror attacks on a specific building in a specific remote town in Kenya (which was the case in 2020 and 2021) does not equal a war. If we used the methodology used to classify Kenya, Tanzania ,Paraguay and Senegal as being in conflict, then more parts of Europe (The Balkans and even Belgium where drug wars are escalating ), and the United States should be even darker

For the second year running I am scratching my head trying to think where the conflict in my country is with 100's of lives lost in the last 2 years. May be you should provide a more detailed list of the 59 conflicts you are talking about.

On a point of order, Mr animator, could I suggest you flip the direction of scrolling for counters ? 1:43 I really feel the individual dials should go up if they increase, or better yet, have a global incrementing counter, so there is one 2digit rotation every 10 1digit rotation, and one 3digit rotation every 10 2digit rotation and so on. I think it would really help with visualising an increase/decrease in the number. My persistent memory is super bad, and I had to go back to see what the former number was and how much lower it was ^^

You should do one about annual deaths in non-military conflicts: like gang wars, turf wars, organized crime battles, and paramilitary conflicts. Some of these lily white countries will be looking a little more blood red.

With Ukraine situation, this year might be even worse than last year. Proxy war in Yemen also look horrible, even with Saudi help the government defeated by Iran backed rebel. Makes you wonder how a legit government with strong land backer lose against rebel backed by incompetent (see: Iran drought) country across strait. Edit: i just realized Syrian civil war doesn't make to the top spot, hope the war end soon.

I would subscribe to nebula for a longer version of this video. Like literally need the rest of this: a list of all other countries, the progression of their wars and how it looks. I NEED MORE

Does anyone know what will happen to Moldova and the renegade Transnistria? Unlike Moldova, Transnistria has retained the Cyrillic script for the Moldovan/Romanian language and is generally very strongly aligned with Russia. Could it be that if Ukraine falls completely into Russia's hands, that Moldova will be next in Putin's sights?

Ethiopian casualties actually amounts to hundreds of thousands. Ethiopia had a civil war from 1974 to 1991 and yet these past 2 years have been the bloodiest. The Ethiopian government has denied journalists from reporting its war making it much harder to gain real information but there are researchers who have put the numbers as such

Is this the nearest video to "why Latin America is so peaceful?" because I need a comment section xd I want to give my perspective as a Latin from Chile , we are peaceful because our internal conflicts, economies and history. In the 1800's, we had a our share of wars because independence and redefining border. Then in the early 1900's the countries had a ton of resources to export and most of the riches were (and are) to concentrated so the oligarchs didn't need a war and the 1929 collapse happened. In the cold War maybe we could have another fair share of wars but guess what, the US had a killstreak on democracies with operation condor and the Coups, and we fell in the same political spectrum so no need for wars(*). After we released of the dictatorships government and military got pretty separated, like no one wants to relate to the ones who murdered and disappeared your people. As why we don't have trade between each other, we produce raw materials, there is no need for trading, and instead we have the same trading partners that could bonk us with sanctions if we fight. Well I could finish here the Latin speed run, nut I gotta give the reminder that I avoided civil wars because there were a ton in different periods and not so consistent with the general time line. Also the (*) is because the war between Perú and Ecuador that we saw in the video, and also Argentina with the Falklands and if they were successful in that they would have attacked Chile, and maybe there are other instances of wars about to start because of nationalism imposed by dictatorships. As an ethnic Taiwanese I can firmly say that there has been no death regarding the state conflict in either 2020 or 2021. The strait is in a dangerous situation but no armed force members and civilians have died from any sort of conflict, at least not that I have heard anything from the news(which would be huge) ... Maybe fix the map a little bit? Or did you mistakenly take us as a part of Philippine?

It’s strange how war is becoming more normalized and widespread, and today war hits Ukraine. Also, it’s interesting how amidst the civil war, the Libyan crisis had the least casualties despite Russian mercenaries. Libya didn’t deserve this lost decade, and after all of this, there still seems to be a bright future ahead. I wish the same for the rest.

Considering the situation under which the assets were frozen I really don't understand why you're bringing it up. Time and time again I have to hear from this channel and others how allowing dictatorships access to large sums of money is a bad idea so I'm curious why exactly you would bring it up unless you're arguing for the US to do effectively that.

Can you try to break down Peru's internal corruption narcoterrorism and absolutely demoralizing politics. I'm married to a Peruvian and lived the for 5 + years. There is a lot of money in Peru. It is not a poor country but it is kept poor. If you can break down the geopolitical spheres of influence that also cross into into neighbors; there is a goldmine of interlinked stories. Look at it like this especially- if you put Peru and Brazil together- you have the geopolitical equivalent of the US in South America like in the North. Very simplistic model but you might find some value in that heuristic. Peru was loosly part of the Non Alignment group but its tumultuous political history makes me feel like there is always a shadow entity there that keeps it that way. Check out the Canon Minero- supposedly there is a huge fund at the national level that is collected from foreign mining operations. Also read the summary of the Abbreviated Summary on the Truth and Reconciliation of Terrorism in Peru from 1980-2000. The poor campesinos were devastated by Shining Path and what people don't talk about is the families and whole communities that were displaced on purpose to create a subservient model for Maoist warfare. The drugs, the money, the arms, and the most nefarious connections, privilege and of course money laundering via casinos. I really like your channel 😊

Although the number of casualties in war, and the number of wars itself has been drastically down since 1945, we must always remember that war is always raging somewhere in the world. It's just human nature.
