Joe is absolutely right. Wish I'd heard this years ago. EXPERIENCE is KING. Got off a call with a recruiter today whom I'd asked about whether they're fine with someone not having a Bachelor's degree in Tech or not. His answer, plain and simple: => "We're looking for experienced individuals who've done the sort of work in the past, whether freelance or full-time." If you're new and you're reading this. STOP wasting your time, learn the necessary skills, do a few freelance work and start applying. The longer you delay, the harder it might get to enter into tech while others have already moved on and moved far ahead of you! This is a race guys! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! ⏳

The title sounds a lil click baity but is true. So 6 months ago I decided to do what Joe said and just get exp with what I got. Got a position as a graphic designer i told the ceo on the interview that I would like to help with wordpress and the email(They use Klaviyo, I learned mjml for nothing). They told me they had someone working on the site...not really they just have people that make pages but know nothing of code or wordpress so no Im the wordpress guy at the company, convince them to invest on a updated themr etc... Still not the salary I want but at least when I start looking for a new job I will ask for way more now. So Joe is it better to just stay in wordpress learning more php or try to get into fullstack?
@bharatjeevan
@bharatjeevan 5 месяцев назад
What big man just said is the truth, word for word. It's business. It's about showing that you can get shit done from day zero without a lot of handholding. And that takes a little bit of experience. You can't just stack some skills, hit apply and expect companies to chase you now. Those days are not coming back. I realized this pretty early because I spent a lot of time learning about all the potential pitfalls in the industry. You need to use the relevant skills you've learned to build real world solutions for businesses and clients. In doing this you end up learning how to market yourselves but most importantly garner experience and get paid for your work. Anything that you've built - that helps improve businesses - is a lot more valuable that building some bog standard project that everyone else is whipping up. They help you stand out and get noticed 👍🏼

You’re right about the CMS thing. I have an interview coming up and the position requires Drupal. Even though I mentioned that I did not have any professional experience in Drupal, but I’m able to pick it up. I’m going to study the hell out of Drupal before going into this interview to show that I am the right person for this job! No company is building these websites from basic HTML/CSS anymore. These CMS tools are definitely the way to go it seems.

Here’s a question. How far would offering a service to someone in the business for free in exchange for a testimonial or a referral take you when it comes to getting one’s foot in the door to a regular full time dev job?
@CodingPhase
@CodingPhase 5 месяцев назад
Personally if I have the time I would do it. I remember when I first started built a site for an indie movie director and I only made like 200 bucks for 3 page site and that was my first “reference”. I made it for free and after the site was done dude said I have to pay you something. Sometimes you have to take the hit it’s like opening up a pizzeria and giving out slices for free but those people that eat it will come back and tell people about your business so the investment is worth it. Right now you don’t have to invest anything else but your time. Just make sure it’s something that won’t take more than 3 days of work
