I started watching ZP when I was 12 and am happy to learn that: 1. Yahtzee's old reviews still hold up today and it isn't just the tint of nostalgia that makes me remember so fondly of this. 2. I had at least somewhat decent tastes back then, even if I didn't understand half of the jokes or references he was making. 3. That Yahtzee is still producing content of similar, if not better, quality to what I enjoyed over a decade ago.
A good chunk of that is probably because Croshaw hasn't succumbed to his persona the way a lot of the early 'angry funny man on the internet' video reviewers have. When you watch or read his more long form reviews it's very clear that even with games he doesn't like, a lot of the attitude is purely performative and he does put a lot of thought and has an interest in learning and articulating WHY he thinks some games are good and some are bad. Meanwhile a lot of similar reviewers have devolved into caricatures of themselves in order to chase views.
yeah a lot of these Internet guys tend to fall victim to flanderisation shows how sharp yahtzee's writing is, that he's still clever and entertaining after 15 years
I like to think that this is just a 2 hour review of a single game with a wide variety of gameplay styles and various levels of quality over the course of 80 hours of playtime.

The game comic bit will never get old. I remember reading a nuzlocke comic on dA where the author arguably made an effort for having an original story, but the characterization was completely wrong for the "hero" who honestly was not open to discussion, complained about not being heard when everyone always pandered to her, blamed others for her short comings and lashed out violently when challenged. Funny enough when I pointed this out the author then accused me of not listening, blaming me for misinterpreting their character and lashed out violently for doing so.
I liked Dead Space...and I still remember the scariest moment: I just beat a few necromorphs and was sure the room was clear - then I heard a mysterious banging. It persisted over the next few rooms and I got really frightened. Until I reached a room with a few bodybags, glitching out and making the noise by clipping through the floor...it's really sad that a supposed horrorgame induced the most horror in me through a bug.
In both rounds of the Sonic Unleashed video, there's a line that's been edited. Original: "This is game-play I'd expect from a fucking rom-hack, designed by Hitler"
35:28 The text on the sign is higher rez than the rest of the video. So i looked up the original video (zero punctuation: grand theft auto 4) and found that the sign originally said "Hitler was cute". Ironic that a image created to illustrate controversy has been censored because of controversy.
Also at about 18:53 in the actual review of sonic unleashed Yahtzee says he'd expect that from "a fucking rom hack *designed by Hitler*" but the "designed by Hitler" bit is cut out in this.
Considering how easy it is to find videos taking that topic seriously on YT even without looking (or being the exact opposite opinion of those videos) removing the references was probably a smart idea. :P
a lot of people seem to point out how harsh a lot of the old reviews are, but honestly even back here the positives of certain games are still retained. I always remembered ZP as being brutally uncompromising and vicious, but coming back it all feels a lot more lenient than i remembered when i was younger.
It’s interesting to see how Yahtzee started off relentlessly and uncompromisingly abrasive at every opportunity, mocking everything that moves and going as far as can be done, and yet if You look at His modern reviews, while very little has changed, there’s a definite difference in tone. He feels a lot more exhausted, and a lot less deliberately aimless in his abrasiveness. There’s more genuine seeking of quality and Art to Him, but tired and worn down by the endless sludge through what We refer to as Modern Gaming, but many others would refer to as A Vision of Hell. I think I prefer the modern stuff too, which seems counterintuitive to how Humans normally work.
@@Druid-T lol wut? all of the problems with the epic store, timed exclusives, poor user privacy practices, etc etc are a page straight out of the anticonsumer practices of the console industry... how is it a comeuppance scenario? what did gamers do to deserve epic?
@@lucentauri9774 I mean, you can shout and whine all you want at Epic but it's not going to change anything. The company that needs to lift their game is Steam.
@@Bashfluff there's a few jokes that have been covered or removed because they can be considered controversial (Hitler jokes for example) so while it's nice we have a compilation of all the episodes they aren't the original version so I'm not exactly pleased about it
@@wearsjorge55 Thankfully, everything they cut out was for the better, since a lot of them were moderately tasteless, so it makes sense that Yahtzee wouldn't want them in here in retrospect. Few enough that it's no big deal.
The dialogue assignment of oblivion was fucked because they had lines recorded in alphabetical order to prevent spoilers for the voice actors. A bad reason in execution for tone but noble in idea. Kinda like the levelling system too
Ikr? In the Sonic Unleashed one the "This is gameplay I would expect from a fucking romhack, designed by hitler." joke had the "designed by hitler" part cut off. Was almost looking forward to it because the delivery is so great.
half expecting russ pitts to pen a fifteen page op ed about how the 50 cent review is problematic (despite yahtzee's critiques still being the most resonant and absolutely correct takes to this day) and firing him for good
Considering people complained about Wolfenstein The New Colossus for being "political", a joke at Hitler's expense doesn't tend to fly as much with gamers in 2019 like it did in 2008.
Same here, some producers like Yahtzee, Oxhorn, Camelworks or FudgeMuppet can successfully keep me both engaged when I want but also drift me to sleep when I'm tired.
After playing EVE for 5 years, I might know what those skills are. Signature Analysis and Signature Focusing are both very similar named and it's been some time since I played. One may involve how well you can scan signatures while exploring while the other may speed up your lock on time. Tactical Logistics Reconfiguration lets you use the Triage module formerly on Carriers but now it's on Auxiliary ships. Basically, it lets you become an immobile super healer. Also, I still love how Yahtzee apparently lost a Drone Carrier Battleship to what is essentially a commercial truck while both were flying backwards. Also, the markets in EVE Online are 98% player run. If you see it for sale, it's being sold by another player. The 2% comes from seeded items that players can't obtain or build such as skill books and blueprints but some savvy people buy piles of skillbooks and sell them for inflated prices at market hubs.
@@barrierfire1o1 Yes, I know. that was sarcasm. I was hoping the over-the-top reaction and stating the obvious nonsense words would be enough to convey that.
I couldn't help but think of Dick Figures when Yahtzee was describing the webcomic with a cool, stable main character, the wacky foil best friend, and the nanny girlfriend character
There's so many that fit in. VGCats, Least I Could Do, Ctrl+Alt+Del, and practically every webcomic from the mid 2000s. This could even apply to things like Homestar Runner to some extent (which bums me out now that I think about it).
I'm glad escapist is getting the traffic for these but shame about the censorship. I am wondering if Yahtzee okayed it and I'm not sure which answer is worse.
The Painkiller review got censored too, after mentioning the 'big fat architectural stiffy' he mentions the variety of dudes, and the bit 'they don't give me any kind of stiffy though, that would be gay' got removed.
In Sonic Unleashed, he says "This is what I would expect from a fucking ROM hack. Designed by Hitler." In this version, they cut out the "designed by Hitler" line. There are more but that is the first one that I noticed
Yahtzee will never see this comment but I want you to know that censoring yourself or being censored by the Escapist is pathetic and undermines literally everything you've ever done
@@09csr it's weird because some gay jokes have been cut out, and some have been left in. All the Hitler jokes are gone, but the stuff about drugged prostitutes is still here. And the Sonic Unleashed video is in here twice. Idk who edited this but it almost feels like they weren't really trying very hard, or they have some VERY specific hangups in VERY specific circumstances lol
Yeah, very strange. I mean, they are literally just dragging and dropping one video after the other into a sequence timeline. You'd think they would notice if they dragged the same video down twice.
@@skepticallypwnd they're not. They're pretty heavily editing it in order so mistakes will happen. They cut out some jokes so they had to have done more than just play them in order
@@Shotblur Right, but it's zero punctuation because it's really fast speaking long statements. Punctuations like commas and periods make you pause. It's a pun on his selling point is how fast he speaks.
I will say, coming back to this 18 years later really reveals how the industry has changed/stayed the same in almost 2 decades. As much as we now hate The Escapist, we need to archive this for the sake of history
I used to think the line about shouting his favourite dessert and gaining superpowers was funny, until I was taught the Lemon Meringue Paioken technique
This is so great i got into zero ounctuation anojt a uear ago and binged that giant playlist with all of the ZP episodes and woth these i have a rrasom to reeatch them again
They censored quite a bit, like another nazi reference in Burnout Paradise. Sticking with the full Zero Punctuation playlist is better, even if means the window reloading every 5 minutes.
@@Klontruppe Or you can rush over to the unofficial collection and download them all while we still have them. I appreciate the fact that we get official compilations now but the back catalog being censored is the reason I will hold onto those forever.
Fighting games are like skateboard games, the fun is to learn the system of unintiuitive shit so you can do cool shit by making your fingers into pretzels.
I love how they cut out the references to hitler... causing the comments section to explode with “where’s the references to hitler?” Whatever problem they were trying to solve by editing the videos.. I’m not sure they made things better.
The 2010 one didn't have any ads in it, and I'm surprised this did because Yahtzee here seems to make it a goal to get every single wordvomit video demonetized into a highly localized recession.
@@ni.ko3869 To be fair, it would have been less effort to cut nothing. considering they were left in the original reviews, why put in the extra effort to remove content?
You cut out one of the best jokes of the Painkiller review. You know, how the monsters don't give you a stiffy because that would be gay. It's OK to be politically correct but that's a joke from a decade ago with a different context.
I wish they at least had the balls to leave them in and show the differences of the jokes then and now. I would love to know if Yahtzee even knows they edited some of them out.
