I just called a dulcimer a miniature Grand Piano (in essence, structure demands some eccentric tunings) so yeah... however you want to put it. They're stunning beasts... percussive strings. 😄

They are probably used to music (I use the term in the loosest possible manner) that they can't actually HEAR, just feel the vibration through their body from the high volume and low frequency bass beat. When presented with something that their ears can actually hear, they don't know how to process it. Audiologists for years to come will rejoice and take their money !

Ted, 29th September, bleary eyed, siting in the hospital subway restaurant earing my breakfast after a long night bearing witness to my daughter entering the world. I was so tired and I saw this on my news feed, I was instantly awe struck, I must of visited this song on RU-vid at least a hundred times since, and it takes me back to that time and moment every play. It takes me about 30 minutes to tune my hammered dulcimer. But yes, it's a bit exhausting, especially when there's this one string, that just doesn't want to be in tune :-D

It is an ancient instrument that is the predecessor to pianos harpsichords and etc. It was brought to Europe by the moors. most instruments originate in either Africa or the middle east. Again this is a Hammered Dulcimer look it up!

I have researched the origins of musical instruments extensively before it even says in the description that he is playing a hammered Dulcimer. Yes this is a hammer dulcimer. A normal dulcimer has way less strings and is played by strumming.

2:22 onwards is superior to the original in my opinion. The jazz chords there are almost "borrowed" from another key are used superbly. Thank you.

@PatioPrimate there's definitely automation in that you press a key that pulls on a hammer which hits the string creating sound. There is a big difference from a normal piano.

It's so he still has a bit of the sustain from the chord parts to give context to the vocal parts he has to play separately. Keeps the melody from feeling to bare in comparison. Also just sounds dope like that
