Ignorance of the rules is nnt limited to baseball. I was covering a high school football game when a loud voice from the other sideline bellowed that a pass interference foul should not be enforced because the pass was uncatchable. I commented to the chain gang that the claimed exemption did not exist in high school. The man agreed, listened to the bellowing, then gasped, "That's the head coach."

Dunno what rule is supposed to be, but I argue if batter strikes out AND interferes then it's a no-play batter out. If you can just go ahead and call a runner out as punishment, then there'd have to be a rule about WHICH runner to call out and all that, cuz what if there's a guy on 1st and 3rd, which one would you call out in that case? I adore how much sportsmanship there is between the players. They can chat and laugh when they're next to each other on a base, and scratch their heads collectively at weird stuff like this. It's a breath of fresh air compared to other sports where opposing players are constantly at one another's throats. I don't know if it's because baseball is generally more laid-back, but players seem to actually understand that when trades happen you could be on a different team, so why be a dick? YES, THANK YOU! The rule cited would not allow the umpire to call the runner out under any circumstance. Either there is another rule that would allow such a call or umpires are allowed to invent rules from time to time. This was not addressed in the video. Edit: I FIGURED IT OUT. There IS another rule that would apply. Rule 6.01 (a)(5): "Any batter or runner who has just been put out, or any runner who has just scored, hinders or impedes any following play being made on a runner. Such runner shall be declared out for the interference of his teammate." The umpires weren't confused about the rule; they were confused about the count. When they thought the pitch was the third strike, they got the ruling correct based on that. When they discovered they had the count wrong and it was only strike two, they got the ruling correct based on that.

@blackice1796
@blackice1796 2 года назад
Yea, agreed. My biggest confusion was how you can call the batter out without him putting the ball in play on a non strikeout. That part will never make sense to me, interference or no. I gueeeeeees it protects the possibility of the batter intentionally interfering to protect the runner if he gets a poor jump or something. But still, I don’t know if that’s really necessary.
@db9944
@db9944 2 года назад
@@blackice1796 I think you answered your own question. Baseball already has an issue with being too slow at times. We wouldn't want to see it become a viable strategy to constantly try interfere with a catcher in every steal situation. Plus, we'd probably see a lot of guys wind up breaking their nose when a ball gets yeeted right into their face.
@ThatGuy-nv7cx
@ThatGuy-nv7cx 2 года назад
@@blackice1796 if you think about it, a purposeful interference could be a better opportunity to advance the runner than a bunt, so there has to be some punishment. And since the batter is the one that interfered, they’re the one that faces that punishment
